Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or HP
value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe it's
the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

  by Stephan Schmieder (http://freshmeat.net/users/ssc_/)

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Security
System :: Monitoring

About: Advchk (Advisory Check) reads security advisories so you don't have
to. Advchk gathers security advisories using RSS feeds, compares them to a
list of known services, and alerts you if you're vulnerable. Since adding
hosts and services by hand would be quite a boring task, advchk leverages
nmap for automatic service and version discovery. Using it can be as
simple as "advchk -a host.name".

Changes: This release adds three more RSS feeds to addFeeds.sh
(packetstorm, first, and belnet).

[002] - Another File Integrity Checker 2.8-3
  by Gerbier Eric (http://freshmeat.net/users/gerbier/)
  Tue, Jul 11th 2006 11:03

Security
System :: Systems Administration

About: afick is another file integrity checker, designed to be fast and
fully portable between Unix and Windows platforms. It works by first
creating a database that represents a snapshot of the most essential parts
of your computer system. You can then run the script to discover all
modifications made since the snapshot was taken (i.e. files added,
changed, or removed). The configuration syntax is very close to that of
aide or tripwire, and a graphical interface is provided.

Changes: The follow-symlinks parameter behavior has been inverted to match
the documentation: during the first run on Unix hosts, users will have a
lot of dummy warnings. A bug was fixed in the VERBOSE macro. The Windows
packager has been changed from install creator to setup2go: Windows users
should save the configuration file, uninstall the old release, and then
install the new one (instead of upgrading).

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Software Distribution
Utilities

About: Appctl is a framework for virtually any server software. It
provides a central script called "ctl" which allows you to start, stop,
restart, maintain, or query the current status of an application. It is
meant as a completely generic replacement for application-specific
startup/stop scripts. The project also supplies generic monitoring scripts
for clusters, which can dramatically decrease clustering costs.

Changes: Failure of status evaluation at startup in PIDLESS mode or if no
PID file exists was fixed. A template for PIDLESS_MODE was added to
ctlenv.

Artistic Software
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: ASCIIweb is a text-to-HTML formatting system that uses the 'pre'
tag to create ASCII art Web pages, either on-the-fly or for static
retrieval. It has a simple and flexible module system that also allows you
to integrate shell scripts and practically any text output into your Web
pages. It will also parse and include live Apache-style directory listings
into your pages, giving you a creative and good looking way to make files
available to your users. It looks just as good in Lynx as it does in
Mozilla.

Changes: This version includes a line wrapping feature. Users no longer
have to manually format their content pages.

Internet
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is
small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence,
different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Hash, and Least
Resource) and a customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It
supports VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) to set up high
availability configurations on multiple nodes. It integrates pcap packet
dumping for debugging purposes and allows the implementation of a
"transparent forensic logging bridge".

Changes: The bngfilt streams module was updated for Solaris systems.
Updating is recommended for all Solaris users. A code cleanup was
performed with several speed optimizations. A "benchmark" command was
added, introducing a convenient way to measure and compare hardware,
operating system, and switch performance below (and together with)
BalanceNG. The manual was updated.

[006] - BeleniX 0.4.4
  by Moinak (http://freshmeat.net/users/moinakg/)
  Tue, Jul 11th 2006 01:09

System :: Operating System

About: BeleniX is a new live CD distribution based on the version of
OpenSolaris that runs on x86 machines. It includes all of the OpenSolaris
components (core kernel, libraries, and utilities) and also includes
additional GNU/OSS software. BeleniX will ultimately become a full
OpenSolaris and GNU/OpenSolaris distribution.

Changes: The significant feature of this release is the development of an
I/O scheduler for the HSFS module in OpenSolaris. The I/O scheduler
enhances CD-ROM read performance by using I/O reordering with the CLOOK
algorithm, I/O coalescing, and semi-asynchronous read-ahead that benefits
sequential read. This HSFS enhancement reduces live CD boot time by up to
24 seconds and improves general CD-ROM performance by up to 25%. It was
updated to a recent OpenSolaris source snapshot (20060626) that contains
many fixes and improvements. Drivers and device support were updated.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: Breakage is a drum machine with unusual real time programming and
performance. Where traditional step sequencers edit one note at time,
Breakage adds neural network and pattern morphing functions to allow
composition above the note level.

Changes: Selected patterns in the database and morph can now be previewed
in the pattern editor. The neural net can now suggest a new pattern
(rather than overwriting the existing one). There are now mute and solo
channel controls in the pattern editor. Breakage now runs a little faster.
Some major OS X startup bugs were fixed.

[015] - Conary 1.0.22

  Tue, Jul 11th 2006 11:10

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: Redirect handling is improved, more error conditions are handled
explicitly, and dependency resolution against unavailable repositories no
longer creates an error.

System :: Shells
System :: Systems Administration

About: DBAShell is a project based around Shell functions and scripts
designed to make it easy for DBAs to use databases in a command line
environment. It offers automatic setting of environment variables,
functions to run scripts, store and provide script passwords, check
database status, stop/start databases, run script commands in a parallel,
compile all database objects, etc. Currently supported is Oracle with ksh

[019] - fastutil 5.0.4
  by Sebastiano Vigna (http://freshmeat.net/users/vigna/)
  Tue, Jul 11th 2006 23:23

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: fastutil extends the Java Collections Framework by providing
type-specific maps, sets, lists, and queues for Java with a small memory
footprint and fast access and insertion; it also includes a fast I/O API
for binary and text files. The classes implement their standard
counterpart interfaces (e.g., Map for maps) and can be plugged into
existing code. Besides the usual features, fastutil provides
reference-based containers (which do not use equals() to compare objects)
and linked structures. Most iterators provided by fastutil classes are
bidirectional, or even implement the standard list iterator interface.

Changes: The I/O subsystem provides support for measurable streams, that
is, input streams whose length and position can be predicted. Buffered
input streams can read lines (for low-level protocol parsing, etc.).
Array-based lists reallocation is significantly faster.

  Tue, Jul 11th 2006 16:36

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: Gmerlin is a set of multimedia libraries which comes with several
applications. Applications include a full featured media player with Gtk-2
GUI, an audio/video transcoder, a webcam application, and an ALSA mixer.
The libraries provide many low-level functions like handling of

Communications
Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: GRIA is Grid middleware that enables use of the Grid in a secure,
interoperable and flexible manner. It makes use of business models,
processes, and semantics to allow resource owners and users to discover
each other and negotiate terms for access to high-value resources. It
implements an overall business process to find, procure and utilise
resources capable of carrying out high-value, expert-assisted
computations. By focusing on business processes and the associated
semantics, it enables users to provision for their computational needs
more cost effectively, and develop new business models for some of their
services. Services from different providers can be combined together to
create applications using a simple and easy-to-use API.

Changes: This release provides a modular and flexible management
infrastructure based on a wider use of Web Service standards. There are 4
software packages to address the following business needs: allow an
organisation with cluster computing facilities to provide data storage and
processing to trusted users; provide support for service level agreements
to manage and bill for service usage; allow users to access GRIA
application services via desktop applications and develop integrated
applications via a simple API; and provide support for organisation-level
management of service users.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: HTML Forms generation and validation is a PHP class that generates
HTML forms supporting many built-in validation types on server and client
sides. It prevents security attacks by discarding spoofed values, has
multiple submit protection, outputs HTML for fields displayed as fully
accessible or in read-only mode, and has field value filtering and
reformatting. It can be extended with custom input control plug-in
classes. AJAX based form submission, auto-complete text input, automatic
vertical layout renderer, Calendar date, CAPTCHA, Google Maps world
location selection, and linked select plug-in controls are available.

Changes: Two new variants of the auto-complete text input plug-in were
added. These variants can be used to auto-complete the text that the user
types using SQL database queries. One of the variants uses MySQL queries.
The other variant uses queries to any database supported by the Metabase
database independent API.

  by Andres Almiray (http://freshmeat.net/users/aalmiray/)
  Tue, Jul 11th 2006 23:34

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Json-lib is a library that can transform the following Java
structures to JSON: Java beans, Java arrays, collections, maps, and
composites of the four previous types. The main motivation for this
library is to provide the means to transform data between a server and an
AJAX enabled application. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a
lightweight data-interchange format that is easy for both humans and
machines to read and write.

Changes: Test suites were added for each package and for the full project.
Common methods of JSONObject and JSONArray were moved to JSONUtils. XML was
renamed to XMLSerializer. It now uses XOM to parse documents. Common
assertion methods were moved to Assertions (tests). HTTP related classes
were deleted.

numerically or using scrollbars. Problems can be solved on-screen, and
high-quality Postscript can be output for publication.

Changes: This release adds the vector-generated background map for the
chart. The configuration has been modified to allow for definition of the
background color of the vector chart. The font selection for the vector
chart has been corrected. A config parameter has been added to set the

About: Mail::Mbox::MessageParser is a feature-poor but very fast mbox

using cached folder information, GNU grep, or highly-optimized Perl.

Changes: A bug where the Perl parser would cache incorrect information
when emails are incomplete, causing the Cache implementation to go into an
infinite loop when it tried to use the invalid information was fixed. The
behavior for multi-part emails that lack a valid ending boundaries was
improved so that the parser does not return the rest of the mailbox.

  Tue, Jul 11th 2006 23:34

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: Metabase is a DBMS-independent PHP API to access SQL databases. It
supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL server, Microsoft
Access, ODBC, Interbase, Informix, MiniSQL, and SQLite. It can install
database schemas defined in a DBMS independent XML format that describe
tables, indexes, primary keys, and auto-increment sequences. It is also
able to upgrade a database to a new schema without affecting the data that
was stored since it was installed or upgraded for the last time. There is
also schema reverse engineering support.

Changes: The Metabase API was enhanced to provide database independent
escaping of % and _ in SQL LIKE expressions that may need to take these
and other wildcard characters literally. Several functions were added to
build patterns that match expressions that begin, end, or contain a given
text, along with another function for composing any other kind of pattern.

  Tue, Jul 11th 2006 16:39

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
Utilities

About: MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original
tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your
console (with ncurses). Merging of 2 or more log files is possible. It can
also use colors while displaying the log files (through regular
expressions) for faster recognition of what is important. It can also
filter lines (again with regular expressions). It has interactive menus
for editing given regular expressions and deleting and adding windows. One
can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software.
When viewing the output of external software, MultiTail can mimic the
functionality of tools like 'watch'.

Changes: This release adds functionality that searches in all windows for
a certain string and then merges all found lines into one new popup
window, or displays the lines reversed in their original windows. All
configuration file settings can now also be set via the command line.

About: Netsukuku is a P2P network system that generates and sustains
itself autonomously, using a fractal algorithm to calculate routes. It is
designed to handle a large number of nodes with minimal CPU and memory
resources.

Changes: An active TCP socket is now kept for each rnode, making it
possible to send them TCP packets without the need to establish a new
connection each time. Since UDP is no longer used for ntk packets, the UDP
daemon has been removed and the 271/udp port has been deprecated. When
there are multiple interfaces which reach the same rnode, the QSPN packets
are now sent from a random device each time. GCC 4 compilation warnings

[039] - Network PDF Server YAFPC-Appliance 1.00
  by Wolfgang Ullrich (http://freshmeat.net/users/ullrich/)
  Tue, Jul 11th 2006 10:47

About: YAFPC-Appliance is a CD-ROM image based on KNOPPIX technology and
the PDF composer/printer/mailer YAFPC. Any PC booted from this CD can act
as a PDF print server and provide an unlimited number of network shared
virtual PDF printers. The system requirements are low. System
configuration can be done via a Web browser from any workstation in your
network. Virtual shared printers can be configured to apply letterheads,
watermarks, and appendices to all printed documents. After printing, a
document is sent to its owner by email, or can be accessed in a shared
folder on the server. Deployment is very simple.

Changes: This is the first stable release with a general code cleanup; all
known bugs have been fixed and all pending feature requests solved. The
appliance is now able to mount external storage devices using CIFS.
Printers can be set up to copy all documents to the external storage while
optionally creating a folder for each printer and a sub-folder for each
user. A small bug where usernames of email aliases were case-sensitive has
been fixed.

About: Open Blue Lab is a rapid application development framework for
building portal applications based on Web 2.0. It is currently being used
to develop a full Web ERP from scratch. Portal layout may be configured
through the UI, and Ajax and HTML-based forms are automatically built from
XML widget definitions, which may be generated on the fly from a UML model
that describes your information system. Widgets are dynamically populated,
making them data-aware automatically at run time with no need to code any
database interaction. This framework allows you to focus on Information

About: PsyncX allows you to backup either part or all of your hard drive.
You can mirror your selected folder to a FireWire drive, a disk image, or
a network drive (this feature doesn't seem to be working right now). In
addition, psync will create a bootable drive if you mirror your entire
harddrive. PsyncX allows you to schedule regular backups as well. (Note:
your computer can't be asleep for this to work properly).

Changes: A Universal binary was created along with an installer that works
with 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4. Unix files were put back where they belong in
/usr/local. The installer now cleans up after former installs. psync.log
files in /var/log are now rotated properly using /etc/weekly.local. A bug
that would cause a crash on if psync cron lines weren't exactly right was
fixed along with a bug that made all jobs run as root. Users now have a
choice to run network jobs without sudo, which will make things work a lot
better. The interface was tweaked to work better and a Dutch localization

Information Management :: Document Repositories

About: SiSU (Structured information, Serialized Units) is a command line
driven document creation and management framework. With minimal markup of
a plaintext file, it produces: plain-text, HTML, XHTML, XML, ODF
(OpenDocument), LaTeX, PDF, and populates an SQL database (PostgreSQL or
SQLite) at an object/paragraph level for "atomic searches". Prepare
documents using your text editor of choice, then use SiSU to generate the
desired output formats. Vim 7 provides syntax highlighting for SiSU
markup. (For earlier versions, a syntax highlighting file is provided).

[056] - SoftwareUpdate 1.10
  by Jim Youll (http://freshmeat.net/users/jyoull/)
  Tue, Jul 11th 2006 01:05

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Software Distribution Tools

About: SoftwareUpdate is a Java class that assists with adding an
automatic software-update feature to applications. It doesn't perform the
update, but takes care of administrative stuff like looking up the version
number of the latest version, with the ability to distinguish and check
different places based on operating system. It also builds the OS-specific
URLs to make it easy to do a quick latest-version check in any desktop or
server application.

Changes: After instantiating, you must now call loadConfig(). The config
file is not loaded in the constructor because it may throw exceptions.
This version uses a server-side config file to hold settings for the
remote updater, which replaces the former scheme in which "version" and
"hash" file names were provided. The download URL is now in the config
file. This will allow changing of the URL at will, or retrieving downloads
from locations other than the baseURL. Because the download URL comes from
the server at check-time, installed copies in the field will use a changed
URL immediately.

Office/Business :: Groupware

About: SynchroEdit is a browser-based document editor for use by multiple
users simultaneously. It is a form of same-time, different-place
groupware. It allows multiple users to edit a single web-based document at
the same time, and it continuously synchronizes all changes so that users
always have the same version.

Changes: This is a generic bugfix release. A version adjustment was made
to work on an even/odd stable/unstable schema. Trace-catching was
implemented, so client exceptions are sent to the server for analysis.
Login failure notification was made more obvious. Connection state
awareness was improved. Toolbar groups are enabled or disabled, depending
on connection state.

  by Boris Kolpackov (http://freshmeat.net/users/bosk/)
  Tue, Jul 11th 2006 05:57

Software Development
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: XSD is a W3C XML Schema to C++ translator. Provided with an XML
instance specification (XML Schema), it generates C++ classes that
represent the given vocabulary as well as parsing and serialization code.
You can then access the data stored in XML using types and functions that
semantically correspond to your application domain rather than dealing
with elements, attributes, and text in a direct representation of XML such
as DOM or SAX. XSD features support for in-memory and stream-oriented
processing models, comprehensive XML Schema feature coverage, easy
integration, and more.

Changes: Support for streaming XML serialization has been implemented.
Serialization to and deserialization from binary formats have been added.
Validation against XML Schema in the generated code ("perfect" parser) has
been implemented. A new architecture for underlying XML parsers has been
added. Generated code size has been reduced.
