Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or HP
value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe it's
the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

Communications :: Internet Phone
Communications :: Telephony
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: Bayonne is the telephony server of the GNU project. It offers a
script-driven threaded multi-line state event telephony service on
GNU/Linux, xBSD, and Microsoft Windows for building voice response
systems, and uses telephony plugins for runtime driver configuration. It
also features "TGI" for making Perl applications "telephony aware". It may
be used to build telephony-based system administration, home automation,
automated attendant, v-commerce, and voice messaging systems.

Changes: Enhancements for building dialing plans in config files including
merging of plans, for supporting passing of call completion states to
external apps such as for voice broadcast, for management of call instance
for ring notification, and better functionality for configured call limits.
Greatly improved server shutdown.

  by Rick Vinyard (http://freshmeat.net/users/rvinyard/)
  Sun, Jul 16th 2006 21:32

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Software Development :: Libraries

About: clipsmm is a C++ library that provides an interface to the CLIPS
library. CLIPS provides a C environment for the construction of rule-
and/or object-based expert systems used by NASA, branches of the military,
numerous federal bureaus, government contractors, universities, and many
companies. Several areas in which clipsmm extends the CLIPS interface are
templated function callbacks using sigc++ slots, and encapsulated CLIPS
execution environments.

Changes: This is the initial release of the clipsmm C++ CLIPS interface.
The library is sufficiently complete to be usable in practice. This
release provides support for the following CLIPS concepts: activations,
deffacts, environments, facts, modules, rules, and templates (CLIPS
templates, not C++ templates). An additional feature in this release is
the ability to add any function or C++ class method to the CLIPS inference
engine through sigc++ slots.

  Sun, Jul 16th 2006 21:34

Communications
Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries

About: conexus is a generalized C++ I/O library that includes support for
IPv4 and IPv6 sockets, serial/TTY communications, and packet capture (via
pcap). It utilizes sigc++ for object communication. A companion library,
conexusmm, provides a set of gtkmm widgets.

Changes: This release adds support for IPv4 and IPv6 I/O endpoints and
introduces support for unnamed pipes and file endpoints. The multicast
endpoint (previously only IPv4) has been removed as a separate class and
has been incorporated into the UDP endpoints. TCP endpoints are now fully
functional for both IPv4 and IPv6. The serial and TTY I/O classes have
also been significantly changed and offer a nearly complete interface to
POSIX terminals, including line speed control, and parity checking
control. The Gtkmm widgets have been split into their own library,
conexusmm.

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: Crossfire+ is a friendly fork of the crossfire multi-user RPG game.
Unlike the original project, it focuses mainly on stability and
playability, while also adding more maps and better scriptability and
graphics.

Changes: Prices have been reduced overall to lower the difference between
low and high-level players and reduce the amounts of coinage you have to
take with you. The treasure lists have been reworded so monsters drop more
wealth and less garbage items. The mana-fountain quest has been added. The
Perl extension now supports use of the Event module for event-oriented
programming. A bug in the banking script has been fixed. The OpenGL client
has officially entered the Alpha release stage.

  Sun, Jul 16th 2006 12:10

Database
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: dao-zero is a tiny Java bean used to reduce the source of a
persistence tier based on Spring's iBatis support. The usual way to use
iBatis in Spring is to write code and invoke the iBatis API explicitly.
dao-zero invokes the iBatis API for the developer automatically, without
the need to write implementation code. It will implement DAO interfaces
automatically and invoke iBatis SQL mapped statements for you. You can use
it to replace your DAO bean class directly.

Changes: This release fixes an incompatibility with JDK 1.5.

  Sun, Jul 16th 2006 07:14

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office
Communications :: Usenet News
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

About: DeleGate is a multi-purpose application level gateway or proxy
server that mediates communication of various protocols, applying cache
and conversion for mediated data, controlling access from clients, and
routing toward servers. It translates protocols between clients and
servers, converting between IPv4 and IPv6, applying SSL (TLS) to arbitrary
protocols, merging several servers into a single server view with aliasing
and filtering. It can be used as a simple origin server for some protocols
(HTTP, FTP, and NNTP).

Changes: This version supports "Man-In-The-Middle" mode to rewrite
messages as an HTTPS/SSL proxy. Sending the log to multiple syslog servers
is supported. The latency to apply an external filter program has become
several times shorter, and abortions of processes on Windows were fixed.

Text Processing

About: Delta assists users in minimizing "interesting" files, subject to a
test of their "interestingness". A common such situation is when attempting
to isolate a small failure-inducing substring of a large input that causes
a program to exhibit a bug.

Changes: It is now much easier to stop delta. It catches signals and
distinguishes them from return codes. It watches for the DELTA-STOP file
at the same granularity as the tests are run. In multidelta, running the
input file through cpp is off by default and can be turned on with the
flag -cpp.

  Sun, Jul 16th 2006 07:19

Multimedia :: Graphics
Text Processing :: Fonts

About: FONTpage is a Python font viewing/image-generating utility. It
displays system fonts and allows you to change the font size and color,
background color, font face, bold, and italics. It also has the ability to
input the text to be displayed, which you can choose to save as a PNG file.
It is handy to view fonts and styles quickly, or to make "logo" graphics.
There are source code, binary, and Slackware packages available.

Changes: A new "Display Font" feature opens a popup window with the
complete alphabet (upper and lower case) and the digits. The window shows
the current font with the current size, and multiple windows can be used
to compare different fonts. Font size now scales up to 256 pts (instead of
128). The configuration file will now track the last window dimensions when
the application is restarted. If the user font directory directory does not
exist, FONTpage will create one. This is to facilitate installing and
deleting fonts, which FONTpage will only do on a per-user basis.

  by Tim Day (http://freshmeat.net/users/timday/)
  Sun, Jul 16th 2006 13:04

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling

About: fracplanet is an interactive application for generating and viewing
random fractal planets and terrain with oceans, mountains, icecaps, and
rivers. These can then be exported as models to POV-Ray or Blender, or as
textures to other applications. It uses Qt and OpenGL.

Changes: The main addition in this release is the ability to export the
terrain as a texture map, with or without relief shading. A DEM (Digital
Elevation Model, or height field) and normal map are also written. For
planets, the textures are a cylindrically projected latitude/longitude map
(this is directly usable as a spheremap in POV-Ray). The illumination
direction is now controllable from the GUI, and swirly spiral weather
systems can be added into the clouds.

About: Jiplet Container (Java SIP Servlet) is a servlet-like development
and runtime environment for SIP applications. The SIP protocol is widely
used for voice services over IP networks. This product enables developers
to create server-side SIP applications using a component-based model
similar to that envisioned by the J2EE architecture. The Jiplet container
runs as a standalone server as well as a JBOSS service.

Changes: The software has been tested with Jboss 4.0.4. The thread pool
framework has been refactored to be more efficient and more tolerant of
higher SIP message load. The reference application has been modified to
work with additional and newer versions of SIP phones from various
vendors. The Jiplet Console (system administration user interface) now
uses a secure connection for higher security. A number of other bugs have
been fixed.

  by cate (http://freshmeat.net/users/cvan/)
  Sun, Jul 16th 2006 13:25

About: JS-Sorcerer is a JavaScript development tool that greatly increases
a JavaScript programmer's productivity. It performs syntax checking and
variable type and flow analysis on standalone JavaScript files, and it
provides type-safe linking for applications and projects that consist of
multiple JavaScript files. It detects and reports errors at compile time,
eliminating the need to invoke a browser simply to catch syntax errors and
typographical errors. It incorporates an extensive catalog of browser
idiosyncrasies, and produces effective cross-browser code from
DOM-compliant JavaScript, allowing developers to ignore browser
incompatibility issues. It supports AJAX.

Changes: The previous version was exclusive to Eclipse-based IDE users.
This release also targets non-IDE users familiar with command line
interface and utilities. Eclipse users will experience several usability
enhancements.

[032] - jTokeniser 2.0
  by Andy Roberts (http://freshmeat.net/users/theroo/)
  Sun, Jul 16th 2006 17:11

Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: jTokeniser is a Java library for tokenising strings into a list of
tokens. A variety of possible tokenisers are available, including a very
basic whitespace tokeniser, a more flexible StringTokeniser, a couple of
regular expression tokenisers, and a tokeniser that utilises Java's
BreakIterator, which provides more complex, locale dependant tokenisation.
More recently, a tokeniser that add breaks text into its constituent
sentences. All are very simple to use.

Changes: This release includes an easy to use GUI front-end to use the
tokenisers interactively, out-of-the-box. This is especially useful for
experimenting with tokenisers, perhaps within a teaching environment. It
is also handy for those without the Java experience to utilise the library
API directly.

About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each file or
directory to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as filesystems and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include native (kernel disk IO with fam), XML
(mount an XML file as a filesystem), DB4, xmldb, Evolution, Firefox,
Emacs, LDAP, HTTP, FTP, eet, sockets, RDF/XML, RDF/bdb, and mbox. EA
generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.

Changes: The ability to desktop search with Google Earth was added. Many
updates were made to the postgresql ea and fulltext indexers.
rdfcacheattrs was temporarily disabled due to the high potential for
redland db corruption. Improvements were made to xsltfs:// and ferrismv.
ferris-mount-etagere-as-kml.sh was added to setup a Google Earth fuse

About: OriginalSynth allows users to manipulate a small portion of a sound
wave (one 44th approximately or 1000/44100 of a second). This is commonly
referred to as a "wave table". Users can manipulate the wave table itself
by drawing a line with two end points, drawing a point, drawing a curve,
moving a point, or deleting a point. What the user makes is then repeated
(oscillated) and sounds pitched. Additonal features include the ability to
combine multiple wave tabs (add/multiply), insert typical waves (sine,

[069] - SOPE Application Server 4.5.8 (Development)
  by OpenGroupware.org (http://freshmeat.net/users/helge5/)
  Sun, Jul 16th 2006 17:13

Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: The SOPE package is an extensive set of frameworks (16 frameworks,
~1500 classes) which form a complete Web application server environment.
Besides the Apple WebObjects compatible appserver extended with Zope
concepts, it contains a large set of reusable classes: XML processing
(SAX, DOM, XML-RPC), MIME/IMAP4 processing, LDAP connectivity, RDBMS
connectivity, and iCalendar parsing. The parts of the package can be used
stand-alone (e.g. in Cocoa applications) and do not require the appserver
parts. For MacOSX developers, the package includes SOPE:X, which contains
special Xcode and Cocoa support for SOPE.

Changes: This release adds support for 64-bit platforms. Support for the
WebDrive WebDAV client was improved. The gnustep-objc subpackage was
removed and libFoundation was bumped to 1.1.3, which removes the
requirement for a SOPE/lF specific libobjc.

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking

About: strongSwan is a complete IPsec and IKEv1 implementation for Linux
2.4 and 2.6 kernels. It interoperates with most other IPsec-based VPN
products. It is a descendant of the discontinued FreeS/WAN project. The
focus of the strongSwan project is on strong authentication mechanisms
using X.509 public key certificates and optional secure storage of private
keys on smartcards through a standardized PKCS#11 interface. A unique
feature is the use of X.509 attribute certificates to implement advanced
access control schemes based on group memberships.

Changes: This release has achieved a large leap forward in its IKEv2
implementation: full support for X.509 certificate trust path verification
including CRLs; transport protocol and port traffic selectors; NAT
discovery and NAT traversal via UDP encapsulation and port floating,
including graceful handling of peer IP address changes; and liveliness
checks via a Dead Peer Detection scheme.
