Multimedia
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: AQuoSA is an open architecture for the provisioning of Quality of
Service related functionality into the Linux kernel. The project features
a flexible, portable, and lightweight software architecture for supporting
QoS-related services on top of a general-purpose operating system as Linux.
The architecture is well founded on formal scheduling analysis and control
theoretical results. At the core of the software is an adaptive Resource
Reservation layer that is capable of dynamically adapting the CPU
allocation for QoS-aware applications based on its run-time requirements.

Changes: Device and module location relocability was fixed along with
device names, relocation of the qossup device, and relocability of
software. The qosres service start script was renamed. The qresmod service
is now stopped before uninstalling the package. Absolute pathnames of the
device were fixed. The Debian build script was fixed.

Software Development :: Bug Tracking

About: Codestriker is a Web application that supports online code reviews.
Traditional document reviews are supported, as well as reviewing diffs
generated by an SCM (Source Code Management) system and plain unidiff
patches. There are integration points with CVS, Subversion, Clearcase,
Perforce, Visual SourceSafe, and Bugzilla. There is a plug-in architecture
for supporting other SCMs and issue tracking systems. It minimizes paper
work, ensures that issues, comments, and decisions are recorded in a
database, and provides a comfortable workspace for actually performing
code inspections. An optional highly-configurable metrics subsystem allows
you to record code inspection metrics as a part of your process.

Changes: Codestriker now stores text as UTF-8 in order to support code
reviews in Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Support for
ClearCase dynamic views was added along with better support for Perforce
repositories. Support for parsing CVS and Subversion corner-case diffs was
improved. Emails can now be sent using SMTP authentication. Memory usage
when linked to large LXR databases was improved. Repositories can now be
displayed with a configurable display name rather than the full URL.
Invalid bug IDs will be handled when entered in the create/modify topic
screen. A number of other minor bugs were fixed.

  by Steve Hannah (http://freshmeat.net/users/shannah/)
  Tue, Jul 18th 2006 10:54

Database
Database :: Front-Ends
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: Dataface is a flexible and shapable skin that sits on top of MySQL,
making it accessible to every-day users. It automatically generates the
appropriate forms, lists, and menus for a user to interact with the
database without having to know any SQL. It is a full-featured Web
application framework, and gives developers the flexibility to customize
the features and behavior of their application via configuration files
(using the simple INI-file syntax), templates, and plug-ins. A generic
application with no customizations is completely functional, but the
developer is free to customize things at his leisure.

Changes: This release contains major structure changes from the 0.5.x
versions. 0.6 adds many of the tools necessary to be able to build
arbitrary Web applications, making the framework a viable alternative to
lower-level frameworks like Rails. Some of the new features include: an
actions framework; a role-based permissions framework; many new Smarty
template extensions; integrated authentication support; multilingual
support in the core; an application delegate class; and an updated look
and feel.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: DerMixD is an audio mixing and network-listening daemon that is
similar to mixplayd but quite different in its implementation. It supports
the playing of music files on a run-time configurable number of input
channels, mixing them together and producing output on a run-time
configurable number of output channels. It is controlled over a TCP socket
and supports pitch shifting, scripting, gapless playing of tracks,
including filtering of null samples from padding, use of mpg123's
equalizer, flexible input/output connection, and more.

Changes: The control interface command parsing architecture has been
enhanced, now providing interactive help and much more helpful error
messages along with more robust scripting. Furthermore, elaborate work
went into the outputs. Both ALSA and OSS are somewhat stable, but
oss_serial is still the most reliable concerning undistorted sound.
Needless to say, a number of bugs (including memory leaking) have been
fixed.

mapping using coalescent theory. It is based on a Bayesian Markov-chain
Monte Carlo (MCMC) method for fine-scale linkage-disequilibrium gene
mapping using high-density marker maps. HapCluster++ is a C++
implementation of the method described in the paper "Fine Mapping of
Disease Genes via Haplotype Clustering" by E.R.B. Waldron, J.C. Whitaker,
and D.J. Balding. Genetic Epidemiology. 30: 170–179. (2006).

Changes: This version adds an option for setting window sizes for
calculating the clustering-distance. This significantly speeds up the
computation when analysing data with more than a hundred markers. The tool
also deals with genotypes in a very naive phasing added to the MCMC. The
accuracy when using genotypes over phased haplotypes is significantly
worse, though, so whenever possible phased haplotypes should still be
used.

  Tue, Jul 18th 2006 02:52

Software Development :: Localization

About: Pootle is a Web-based translation and translation management tool.
It provides a rich set of features for mangaging a translation project. It
integrates components of the Translate Toolkit to provide error checkers
for translation messages and the ability to download files in a number of
formats: PO, XLIFF, CSV. Pootle can also provide compiled PO files for
download. You can use it to assign work to translators in your team, and
you can define goals to help focus the efforts of your translation. Pootle
can run without a Web server or be proxied through your existing Apache
server.

Changes: A traceback when searching for nonexistent text was fixed along
with a traceback when printing non-Latin text to the console. Page caching
was disabled for translation files (PO, CVS, etc.). Kid is now imported
explicitly so that Pootle doesn't run if it is not installed. Translations
were updated (the default install now contains 22 languages). Updates were
made to the default preferences, including better plurals for Arabic and
distinguishing between simplified and traditional Chinese.

[047] - Rule Set Based Access Control 1.2.8pre2 (Testing)
  by frealek (http://freshmeat.net/users/frealek/)
  Tue, Jul 18th 2006 07:07

Security

About: Rule Set Based Access Control (RSBAC) is a Free Software security
extension for current Linux kernels. It is based on the Generalized
Framework for Access Control (GFAC) by Abrams and LaPadula and provides a
flexible system of access control based on several modules. All security
relevant system calls are extended by security enforcement code. This code
calls the central decision component, which in turn calls all active
decision modules and generates a combined decision. This decision is then
enforced by the system call extensions.

Changes: This release is for 2.4.32 and 2.6.17. The syscall method for
i386 has been changed, which fixes Fedora support, but glibc 2.1+ is
required. Admin tools now clean themselves up correctly in some cases.
"make install" from the makefile wrapper does not clean the admin tools

About: SaVi is satellite visualization software that lets you create, run,
examine, and modify satellite orbits in two and three dimensions.
Simulations of Iridium, Globalstar, Galileo, GPS, and other satellite
constellations are included. SaVi requires Tcl and Tk on a system with
Unix libraries. SaVi works well with the 3D renderer Geomview. Geomview is
optional, though recommended for its 3D rendering capabilities.

Changes: This release includes all work done for a workshop on satellite
applications and constellations given as a guest lecturer at the
International Space University Summer Session. This adds satellite counts
to the fisheye view, builds on FreeBSD and Debian, asks the user what size
Coverage panel is desired, allows satellite footprints to be hidden in the
Coverage panel, adds simulation of the Disaster Monitoring Constellation

  by Daniel Parker (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielaparker/)
  Tue, Jul 18th 2006 23:06

Database
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: ServingXML is a markup language for expressing XML pipelines and an
extensible Java framework for defining the elements of the language. It
defines a vocabulary for expressing flat-XML, XML-flat, flat-flat, and
XML-XML transformations in pipelines. The accompanying console app
supports reading content as XML files, flat files, SQL queries, or SAX
events, and writing it as XML, HTML, PDF, or mail attachments. This
software is especially suited for converting flat file or database records
to XML, with its support for namespaces, variant record types, multi-valued
fields, segments and repeating groups, hierarchical grouping of records,
and row-by-row validation with XML Schema. There is also an API for
embedding the software in a Java application.

Changes: This release allows you to validate individual records with an
XML Schema and log the bad records in a flat file or database table, along
with the reason why validation failed. It also supports escaping of quote
characters in parameters and fields embedded in SQL select and
insert/update statements. Finally, base flat file records may now be
extended by including a reference to them in the definition of a derived
record.

  by mikeStabie (http://freshmeat.net/users/mikeStabie/)
  Tue, Jul 18th 2006 07:42

Scientific/Engineering :: Electronic Design Automation (EDA)

About: Slam is a mature IC Layout editor with the ability to edit very
large designs (such as stream files larger than 10GB). Novel features
include threading for redraw, support for displaying on multiple X servers
simultaneously, and a Tcl interface to the database for user extensibility.
The system is a library based system with multi-user support. Programmable
structures (P-Cells) are available in Tcl. The editor includes gds input
and output.

Changes: This release provides major upgrades in the interface to slam.
The 3.2.0 release uses Tcl/Tk8 as a base instead of Tk7, providing tool
tips, menus on graphics windows, as well as a 2X speedup in evaluating
Tcl. Additionally, 3.2.0 enhances the add wire command with flylines and
halos; a violation reader for MAGMA's Quartz DRC; and a inference stream
in command to automatically create technology files for slam. Migrating to
Tk8 has also allowed the graphic windows to be easily embedded into third
party applications with Tk's "use" functionality.

[054] - SMS Server Tools 2.2.4
  by Stefan Frings (http://freshmeat.net/users/sfrings/)
  Tue, Jul 18th 2006 21:53

Communications

About: The SMS Server Tools (smstools) were made to send and receive SMS
from one or many GSM modems. They include a send/receive daemon and some
sample scripts to build an SMS email gateway and for logging into an SQL
database. The daemon waits for files in an outgoing spool directory and
sends them. It puts all received SMS in an incoming spool directory, and
can call any external program for incoming or outgoing notification. This
software support text messages in 7 and 16 bits (UCS2), as well as 8 bit
binary messages.

Changes: Two small bugs have been resolved. If the "receive before send"
option is enabled, then the program reads one received before sending each
part of a long message. Previously, the program did this only one time
before sending the first part. Received files now have correct permissions
according to the umask command.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Squid is a high performance Web proxy cache that can be arranged
hierarchically for an improvement in response times and a reduction in
bandwith usage. Squid runs on all popular Unix and Windows platforms.

Changes: Performance was increased with kqueue/epoll support. The reverse
proxy setup was simplified and improved. Transparent interception setup
was simplified. WCCPv2 support was added. Vary/ETag based caching was
added to improve caching of negotiatiated content. Access logs are
customizable. Authentication scheme support is negotiated. Linux TPROXY is
supported. Support for proxying of Microsoft Integrated Login sessions was
added. X-Forwarded-For headers are optionally followed for flexible access
controls in cache hierarchies. A lot more was done.

[056] - SRESI 0.11.3
  by Priscus (http://freshmeat.net/users/priscus/)
  Tue, Jul 18th 2006 22:21

Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: SRESI is a smart bookmark manager, with many interesting tricks
sadly bundled in a lousy interface. SRESI works with both the standard
hierarchical trees and the new and fashionable tagged bookmarks. It was
developed as a way to interface both representation systems. SRESI can use
Del.icio.us, Mozilla, Opera, and XBEL bookmarks, and handles a few more
exports besides. Directories and tags are used equivalently, and the final
hierarchies are inferred from actual tag use.

Changes: Hints were accidentally unused in tag-based bookmark selections,
so this has been fixed. Hint use in tree generation was changed to avoid
some useless redundancy. This is not finished yet: it works, but should
not. Hints are merged when merging bookmark collections. Adding bookmarks
now unbalances portals instead of invalidating them, so they can still be
used somewhat.

[057] - StatsDawg 0.41
  by Tim (http://freshmeat.net/users/m00dawg/)
  Tue, Jul 18th 2006 10:42

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: StatsDawg is a suite that has been designed to be easily usable as
well as configurable. It monitors various aspects of a Linux system such
as CPU usage, load average, memory usage, etc. using RRDTool and PHP.

Changes: This release adds a Process Graph, which lists the number of
processes on the system. 0.40 had a bug in this graph that did not present
proper data. This has now been fixed in 0.41. The CPU graph has been
updated to make it more usable. The CSS and HTML have been modified a bit
to make things more clean and nice to look at Smarty has been integrated
into the application for caching and making editing the front-end easier.
The documentation has been updated to reflect configuration changes.

[060] - UMLGraph 4.4
  by Diomidis Spinellis (http://freshmeat.net/users/diomidis/)
  Tue, Jul 18th 2006 22:25

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Software Development :: Documentation

About: UMLGraph facilitates the declarative specification and drawing of
UML class and sequence diagrams. One can specify a class design using the
Java syntax complemented by Javadoc tags. Running the UmlGraph doclet on
the specification generates a Graphviz diagram specification that can be
automatically processed to create Postscript, GIF, SVG, JPEG, fig, or
Framemaker drawings. Similarly, sequence diagrams are specified using
declarative pic macros and compiled with the GNU plotutils pic2plot
program into a PNG, PNM, (pseudo) GIF, SVG, AI, Postscript, CGM, FIG, PCL,
HPGL, Regis, or TEK drawing.

Changes: A new UmlGraphDoc doclet generates context and package class
diagrams integrated with the standard javadoc output. A number of new
options provide fine-grained control for inferring dependencies between
elements.

[062] - XINS 1.4.2 (Stable)
  by Ernst de Haan (http://freshmeat.net/users/znerd/)
  Tue, Jul 18th 2006 02:50

Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Build Tools

About: XINS is a technology used to define, create, and invoke remote
APIs. XINS is specification-oriented. When API specifications are written
(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.

Changes: Five small bugs were fixed. One minor incompatibility was
introduced: generated data elements on the server side are now public
classes, instead of package-private.

[064] - XML_PullParser 1.0.3
  by Myron Turner (http://freshmeat.net/users/turnermm03/)
  Tue, Jul 18th 2006 13:01

Text Processing :: Markup
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: XML_PullParser moves the API of the PHP XML facility from an
event-based model to a token-based model. Instead of processing data as it
is passed from the parser to callbacks, a script using PullParser requests
"tokens" from XML_PullParser_getToken() and a number of helper functions.
Tokens are arrays representing XML structures, which become available in
the order in which they appear in the document being parsed. Methods are
provided both to get tokens and to extract their data.

Changes: This release cleans up bugs in XML_PullParser_isChildOf(),
XML_PullParser_getAttrVal(), and XML_PullParser_isChildOf() that could
return erroneous results. These bugs showed up during development of an
error reporting and tracking module, which will be incorporated into the
next release. In addition, the index to the Manual has been reconstructed;
the previous versions of the index were inaccurate because of a bug in the
indexing script.
