  Wed, Jul 19th 2006 18:20

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: Blossoc is a linkage disequilibrium association mapping tool that
attempts to build (perfect) genealogies for each site in the input, score
these according to non-random clustering of affected individuals, and
judge high-scoring areas as likely candidates for containing disease
affecting variation. Building the local genealogy trees is based on a
number of heuristics that are not guaranteed to build true trees, but have
the advantage over more sophisticated methods of being extremely fast.
Blossoc can therefore handle much larger data sets than more sophisticated
tools, but at the cost of sacrificing some accuracy.

Changes: This version adds a number of improvements to the GUI, plus
experimental QTL support for the command line version.

[011] - Build Order Analyzer 2.0
  by Valdarez (http://freshmeat.net/users/Valdarez/)
  Wed, Jul 19th 2006 10:39

Games/Entertainment :: Real Time Strategy

About: The Build Order Anlyzer for the Axis & Allies RTS is a tool for
analyzing builds in the Axis & Allies RTS game. A "build order" in an RTS
game defines the order in which a player builds their buildings, units,
and upgrades. Understanding the timing and effect of various build trees
is critical in making the appropriate tactical decisions during the game.
The BOA allows a player to build and analyze multiple build orders without
playing a game. It is especially useful when trying to figure out how to
counter a particular build, and can save many hours of game play.

[015] - Common UNIX Printing System 1.2.2
  by Michael Sweet (http://freshmeat.net/users/easysw/)
  Wed, Jul 19th 2006 10:06

Internet
Printing
Software Development :: Libraries

About: CUPS provides a portable printing layer for Unix(r)-based operating
systems. It has been developed to promote a standard printing solution for
all Unix vendors and users. CUPS provides the System V and Berkeley
command line interfaces, and uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP")
as the basis for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon
(LPD) Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect)
protocols are also supported with reduced functionality. CUPS adds network
printer browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing
options to support real world printing under UNIX. It includes an image
file RIP that supports printing of image files to non-PostScript printers.
A customized version of GNU Ghostscript 7.05 for CUPS called ESP
Ghostscript is available separately to support printing of PostScript
files within the CUPS driver framework. Sample drivers for Dymo, EPSON,
HP, and OKIDATA printers are included that use these filters.

Changes: This release fixes several build, platform, notification, and
printing bugs.

[016] - cryptmount 1.1 beta (Testing)
  by rwpenney (http://freshmeat.net/users/rwpenney/)
  Wed, Jul 19th 2006 22:40

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Filesystems

About: cryptmount assists system administrators in setting up encrypted
filesystems based on the device mapper (dm-crypt) of GNU/Linux systems
using a 2.6-series kernel. After initial setup, it allows any user to
mount or unmount filesystems on demand, solely by providing the decryption
password, with any system devices needed to access the filing system being
configured automatically. A wide variety of encryption schemes (provided
by the kernel and OpenSSL library) can be used to protect both the filing
system and the access key. The protected filing systems can reside in
either ordinary files or disk partitions.

Changes: Support for encrypted swap partitions was added. Support for
using libgcrypt as an optional alternative to OpenSSL was added.

[018] - DB Solo 2.0.0 Beta 4
  by DB Solo (http://freshmeat.net/users/mhantula/)
  Wed, Jul 19th 2006 12:07

Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Systems Administration

About: DB Solo is a powerful database development and management tool for
developers and DBAs. It has an intuitive user interface that allows you to
explore and manage your database objects as well as execute ad-hoc queries.
It supports Oracle, MySQL, Sybase, DB2, Solid, PostgreSQL, and MS SQL
Server. In addition to viewing and managing objects such as schemas,
tables, indexes, views, tablespaces, users, roles, sessions, and stored
procedures, you can view, edit, print, and export data from tables or the
results of queries. You can also graphically view foreign key
relationships.

Changes: The J2EE code generator tool now allows you to create a complete
JDBC persistence layer using the DAO pattern. The generated code will
include a DAO interface, a JDBC implementation of the DAO interface, and
JUnit tests for each generated entity. In addition, a DAO Factory plus the
corresponding JDBC implementation will be created. The generated access
layer will contain CRUD functionality as well as finder methods for each
column/field.

[019] - DEMOS 0.9.0
  by DASCOM Project (http://freshmeat.net/users/demos/)
  Wed, Jul 19th 2006 06:45

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: DEMOS is a visual modeling tool that produces executable code. It
is based on a hybrid approach that annotates model elements with Java code
snippets. By leaving complex parts at the code level, it achieves
executability while keeping the basic modeling language simple. DEMOS is
implemented as an Eclipse plugin and provides graphical editing of
applications, background code generation, and immediate feedback on
syntactical validity of models and user-supplied code.

Changes: This release adds query properties with parameters (which allow

[021] - DiffJ 1.0.6
  by Jeff Pace (http://freshmeat.net/users/JEugenePace/)
  Wed, Jul 19th 2006 12:08

Software Development

About: DiffJ is a commandline application that compares Java files based
on content, not whitespace, comments, or reordering of types, methods, or
fields. Its output is based on the Unix program diff, and it also has a
"brief" output format for a concise summary of what changed. It can work
on directories recursively, looking for matching filenames, like "diff -r
dir0 dir1". It is primarily for developers refactoring and reformatting
Java code, for which most difference tools tend to produce misleading
results regarding the type and extent of changes.

Changes: This version includes a fix for a bug in the difference
algorithm.

[022] - DVBStreamer 0.4
  by Adam Charrett (http://freshmeat.net/users/charrea6/)
  Wed, Jul 19th 2006 11:54

Multimedia :: Video :: Capture

About: DVBStreamer is a console application for streaming an entire DVB
service over UDP. It differs from other DVB streaming applications by the
use of the DVB-SI to work out the PIDs to stream and correctly streams
services that use a separate PCR PID.

Changes: Two major features have been added: daemon mode and secondary
service filters. This release can be run as a daemon, and the new
application dvbctrl can be used to control and monitor it. Secondary
Service Filters are like manual outputs, but allow a whole service to be
streamed. Unlike manual outputs, they track the PIDs allocated to a
service. Unlike the primary output, changing the service selected will not
cause a re-tune even if the service is on a different multiplex.

[023] - failmalloc 1.0
  by Yoshinori K. Okuji (http://freshmeat.net/users/okuji/)
  Wed, Jul 19th 2006 14:25

Software Development :: Debuggers

About: Failmalloc generates a shared library which can be loaded by
LD_PRELOAD or linked at compilation time. failmalloc is meant to
demonstrate what really happens if memory allocation fails, which is a
necessary part of testing the robustness of a program. Failmalloc inserts
hooks into your program which induce failures of memory allocation calls.
The functions "malloc", "realloc", and "memalign" are hooked, but other
functions which use one of these functions are also affected.

Changes: This release sets ENOMEM in errno, according to Unix98. It adds
the variables FAILMALLOC_TIMES and FAILMALLOC_SPACE to specify the maximum
number of failures and available free space.

[025] - Gecode 1.2.1
  by Guido Tack (http://freshmeat.net/users/odiug/)
  Wed, Jul 19th 2006 12:30

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Gecode is a portable, accessible, and efficient environment for
developing constraint-based systems and applications. Gecode is radically
open for programming, meaning that it can be easily interfaced to other
systems. It supports the programming of new propagators (as implementation
of constraints), branching strategies, and search engines. New variable
domains can be programmed at the same level of efficiency as finite domain
and integer set variables that come predefined with Gecode.

Changes: In addition to fixes and improvements, the biggest change is that
all branchings now must support branching descriptions. This also entails
straightforward changes (simplifications) to search-related space
operations, and to the implementation of search engines.

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: The MP3 Streaming DownSampler for PHP is written with cable
modem/DSL users with low upstream caps in mind. Using LAME, it dynamically
downsamples a requested MP3 to a bitrate which can be streamed. It doesn't
use temporary files, so you don't have to take the time to do any
batching, and you just give it a directory with symlinks to your music in
a place the Web server can reach. The interface is simplistic and fast,
meant for immediate plug and play access.

Changes: This version features Ogg Vorbis streaming downsampled support,
regular expression searching, a jscrip folder browser, shuffling/random
playlists based on tree location, and Javascript-free PDA support (people
have streamed from palm Treos and other handheld computing devices). The
documentation and style have been tweaked. There are now tar download
options, Altavista image art lookup, and display theme options.

[040] - POMStrap 1.0.4
  by Alag (http://freshmeat.net/users/Alag/)
  Wed, Jul 19th 2006 06:44

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: POMStrap is a really simple Java application bootstrap and
classloader trick that allows dependency "classloading" without side
effect. POMStrap uses Maven2 pom files to resolve dependencies required to
launch an application. For example, if your application depends on A-1.0
(and can only work with this version) and B-1.0; and if B-1.0 also depends
on A-2.0, then B-1.0's dependency won't normally be able to be satisfied
without violating another one of your application's dependencies. POMStrap
avoids this kind of dependency conflict.

pomstrap.properties file, better unit test coverage, and full code cleanup
with javadoc.

[043] - Ragel State Machine Compiler 5.9
  by Adrian Thurston (http://freshmeat.net/users/age/)
  Wed, Jul 19th 2006 18:28

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into C,
C++, Objective-C, or D code. It allows the programmer to embed actions at
any point in a regular language and to control non-determinism in the
resulting machines. It understands concatenation, union, kleene star,
subtraction, intersection, epsilon transitions, and various other common
operators. Through the use of labels and epsilon transitions, Ragel
supports the building of state machines using a named state and associated
transition list paradigm. Its finite state machines are closed under all of
its operators. This property allows for arbitrary regular languages to be
described. It can be used to create a parser for any language that is
regular.

Changes: A bug in the include system was fixed. A segfault that occurred
when referencing entry points in unused actions was fixed. Generated
static data is now const. The manual was reorganized and expanded.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: Restlet is a framework that brings the simplicity and efficiency of
the REST architectural style to Java developers. It is composed of two
parts, the Restlet API (alternative to Servlet API) and a reference
implementation (Noelios Restlet Engine). It supports all REST concepts
(resource, representation, data, connector, components, etc.) and is
suitable for both client and server REST applications. The server
connectors provided are HTTP(S), AJP (via Mortbay's Jetty or an adapter
Servlet) and the client connectors are HTTP(S), JDBC, and SMTP(S).

Changes: This release fixes several bugs (a broken Jetty 6 connector and
potential NPEs). The router API has been refactored, and modifiable lists
and maps are more consistent. The SVN code base and the distribution
packaging have been reorganized to be fully compatible with Eclipse
plugins. The Road map document has been added. Dependencies have been
updated to the latest versions (Jetty 6, FreeMarker, JUnit, JavaMail,

  by bpfm (http://freshmeat.net/users/bpfm/)
  Wed, Jul 19th 2006 14:47

Security :: Cryptography

About: The seccure toolset implements a selection of asymmetric algorithms
based on elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). In particular, it offers public
key encryption / decryption and signature generation / verification. ECC
schemes offer a much better key size to security ratio than classical
systems (RSA, DSA). Keys are short enough to make direct specification of
keys on the command line possible (sometimes this is more convenient than
the management of PGP-like key rings). seccure builds on this feature and
therefore is the tool of choice whenever lightweight asymmetric
cryptography -- independent of key servers, revocation certificates, the
Web of Trust, or even configuration files -- is required.
