Artistic Software
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: 64 Studio is a collection of native free software for digital
content creation on x86_64 hardware (AMD's 64-bit CPUs and Intel's EM64T
chips). It's based on the pure 64 port of Debian GNU/Linux, but with a
specialised package selection and lots of other customisations. The
distribution includes the Linux kernel with realtime preemption patches,
the GNOME desktop, and a selection of creative applications, covering
audio and music, 2D and 3D graphics, and publishing for the Web and print.
It also includes Internet and office tools that a creative user is likely
to need for their daily work.

Changes: Some known bugs remain in this beta release. The snd_seq module
is not loaded automatically, which causes errors with MIDI applications
until the module is loaded manually. The Gnome-cups-add printer applet
does not work properly. After installation, Synaptic produces an error
message until apt-get update is run.

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: PDF transparency was implemented. The documentation of Bezier
curves was improved. Bounding box calculations now account for label
scaling. A special case of the Step calculation in graph.asy was fixed.
The function scroll(int) was changed to a setting; a quit (q) option was
added to the scroll facility. To avoid an unwanted ghostscript window,
gswin32c (rather than gswin32) is used by default for producing PDF files
under MS-DOS.

  Tue, Aug 1st 2006 14:17

Text Editors
Text Processing
Utilities

About: Boxes is a text filter that can draw any kind of box around its
input text. Box design choices range from simple boxes to complex ASCII
art. A box can also be removed and repaired, even if it has been badly
damaged by editing of the text inside. Since the generated boxes may be
open on any side, the program can also be used to create regional comments
in any programming language. New box designs of all sorts can easily be
added and shared by appending to a free format configuration file. In
addition to being a command line tool, Boxes integrates well with any text
editor that supports filters.

Changes: This is essentially a maintenance release. It solves all
compilation and compatibility issues reported to the author. The issues
mainly affected modern Linux distributions. In addition, all patches that
had been submitted were applied. Tab handling options have been added for
leading tabs.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Security

About: DansGuardian is a Web content filtering proxy that uses Squid to do
all the fetching. It filters using multiple methods including, but not
limited to, phrase matching, file extension matching, MIME type matching,
PICS filtering, and URL/domain blocking. It has the ability to switch off
filtering by certain criteria including username, domain name, source IP,
etc. The configurable logging produces a log in an easy to read format. It
has the option to only log text-based pages, thus significantly reducing
redundant information (such as every image on a page).

Changes: This version alleviates the infamous "more than 60 links from
this node" error as well as POST upload problems with NTLM. ICAP URLs are
now correctly parsed without explicit port numbers.

[016] - Fisherman 0.9
  by Simon Brooke (http://freshmeat.net/users/simonbrooke/)
  Tue, Aug 1st 2006 09:16

About: Fisherman is a system for managing and monitoring the sustainable
exploitation of wild or communally owned natural resources, such as fish,
shellfish, wild game, timber, or firewood. It was originally developed for

About: The GtkDatabox widget (for use with the GTK+ widget set) is used to
display large amounts of numerical data in graphical representation.
Several sets of data may be shown at one time. You may zoom in and out and
navigate via scrollbars. The display of data is rather fast, so you can use
the widget for quickly changing data (i.e. an oscilloscope for example) as
well. The widget has already been adapted to several scientific projects
around the world.

executed before a user accesses his/her mailboxes.

Changes: This release fixes a bug that could cause a mix up of connections
when multiple connections to the same server with the same username but a
different port were established. It also corrects the problem of listing
mailboxes and folders that contain spaces. When listing inside a folder,
the folder itself is omitted in the resulting list. Newly added

  Tue, Aug 1st 2006 05:26

Database :: Front-Ends
Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
Multimedia :: Graphics

About: Karra is a flexible, Web-based, multi-lingual system for creating
digital libraries of images, documents, URLs, and associated metadata. It
could be used to archive and organise an organisation’s photo collection,
providing a historical record. It could be used in scientific study where
images of particular items need to be stored with data or geographical
information. Textual information can be included with each item, creating
a valuable repository of data and providing a way to search for records
later.

Changes: All file types are now handled. Consequently, the name, Open
Searchable Image Catalogue does not accurately reflect the function of the
software. The project's name was changed to Karra. This version represents
some major changes and breaks compatibility with previous versions of

[030] - Linux Replicated High Availability Manager 1.2.2
  by Simon Edwards (http://freshmeat.net/users/bongo44/)
  Tue, Aug 1st 2006 10:28

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: The Linux Replicated High Availability Manager (Linuxha.net) allows
the creation of clusters for application high availability through data
replication. Currently, clusters are limited to two nodes, but multiple
applications can be hosted and failed-over between the nodes. The software
uses DRBD to provide the data replication facillity.

Changes: This version fixes two small bugs found when clustering Oracle
10g. However, the major difference is that TCP port allocation is now
automated. Be sure to read the release notes prior to upgrading, since
this requires a change to the cluster and application configuration files.

  by bpfm (http://freshmeat.net/users/bpfm/)
  Tue, Aug 1st 2006 10:29

Security :: Cryptography

About: The seccure toolset implements a selection of asymmetric algorithms
based on elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). In particular, it offers public
key encryption / decryption, signature generation / verification and key
establishment. ECC schemes offer a much better key size to security
ratio than classical systems (RSA, DSA). Keys are short enough to make
direct specification of keys on the command line possible (sometimes this
is more convenient than the management of PGP-like key rings). seccure
builds on this feature and therefore is the tool of choice whenever
lightweight asymmetric cryptography -- independent of key servers,
revocation certificates, the Web of Trust, or even configuration files --
is required.

  Tue, Aug 1st 2006 14:37

Communications
Internet
Software Development :: Libraries

About: XPA Messaging provides seamless communication between Unix
programs, including X, Tcl/Tk, and generic select() loops. It provides an
easy way for users to communicate with these XPA-enabled programs by
executing XPA client commands from a shell. Because XPA works both at the
programming level and the shell level, it is a powerful tool for unifying
any environment, offering flexibility in choosing the best level at which
to access XPA services. A program becomes an XPA-enabled server by
defining named points of public access through which data and commands can
be exchanged with other client programs (and users). Using standard TCP
sockets, XPA supports both single-point and broadcast messaging to and
from these servers.

Changes: Ported to Intel icc and gcc 3.3 compilers. Upgraded to Tcl/Tk
8.4. Support has been added for generating man pages, PDF, and Postscript
from the HTML pages. Potential buffer overflows in string handling have
