[007] - check_logfiles 1.3.3
by lausser (http://freshmeat.net/users/lausser/)
Thu, Aug 3rd 2006 15:32
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
About: check_logfiles is a plugin for Nagios which checks logfiles for
defined patterns. It is capable of detecting logfile rotation. If you tell
it how the rotated archives look, it will also examine these files. Unlike
check_logfiles, traditional logfile plugins were not aware of the gap
which could occur, so under some circumstances they ignored what had
happened between their checks. A configuration file is used to specify
where to search, what to search, and what to do if a matching line is
found.
Changes: This release adds nsca support for stand-alone use of
check_logfiles. If you don't want to run check_logfiles under the control
of the Nagios scheduler, you can run it (for example) as a cronjob. Its
results will then be reported to the Nagios server via send_nsca.

by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Thu, Aug 3rd 2006 15:15
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: This version primarily contains fixes and minor updates to the
package building process. In particular, source actions take mirror://
pseudo-URLs and a package= keyword argument that works like the package=
keyword argument to build actions. Several build actions took "dir=,",
"subDir=", and "subdir=" keyword arguments; these have been standardized
with backward compatibility. Cooking groups with the --debug option now
displays detailed information on which troves were included to satisfy
which dependencies.

Thu, Aug 3rd 2006 03:27
About: NVRAMD is simple assignment-value-pair data base server typically
used as a configuration registry on embedded systems. Several features are
particularly useful for that purpose: the data base is completely held in
application memory and a flash (or a plain file) is used to store a copy
of that data base that is loaded when the server starts. Changes in the
data are only saved after a set time since the last change occurred,
preventing flash from being written too frequently.

Software Development :: Code Generators
About: PHP Object Generator (POG) is a PHP code generator which generates
clean and tested object oriented code for your PHP4/PHP5 application. It
is meant to eliminate the time a PHP programmer often wastes on repetitive
coding of the database access layer of an application simply because
different applications require different objects. By generating PHP
objects with integrated CRUD methods, POG saves you from writing and
testing SQL queries.
Changes: Setup now performs its job more thoroughly, tests connected
objects, and is more stable and verbose when something goes wrong. Setup
also performs automatic table alignment when the user modifies and
regenerates objects. Relation bugs were fixed. The database connection
class was improved to at least escape strings when db_encoding is
disabled. A POG-updates bug was fixed on the server side. Setup can now be
password protected. All Parent objects now also have a Set<Child>List
function in addition to the Get<Child>List.

About: qingy is a replacement for getty. It uses DirectFB to provide a
fast, nice GUI without the overhead of the X Windows System. It allows the
user to log in and start the session of his choice (text console, GNOME,
KDE, wmaker, etc.).
Changes: Extensive logging capabilities were added. Now you have the
option of having qingy log its messages to one (or more) of console, log
file, or syslog. You can also specify the log verbosity. A user is allowed
to select a session by typing the first character of its name. Subsequent
presses of the same key will bring up any other session names that start
with the same character, if any exists. Support for choosing a session
during text mode login was added. The ./configure option
"enable-x-support" now actually works, so disabling it will make qingy

System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: radmind is a suite of Unix command-line tools and a server designed
to remotely administer the file systems of multiple Unix machines. At its
core, radmind operates as a tripwire. It is able to detect changes to any
managed filesystem object, e.g. files, directories, links, etc. However,
radmind goes further than just integrity checking: once a change is
detected, radmind can optionally reverse the change. Each managed machine
may have its own loadset composed of multiple, layered overloads. This
allows, for example, the operating system to be described separately from
applications. Loadsets are stored on a remote server. By updating a
loadset on the server, changes can be pushed to managed machines.
Changes: Performance improvements to fsdiff. Testing on Linux has shown an
80x increase without checksums and a 4x increase with checksums.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Security
About: SQLIer is a script that uses brute force to crack passwords through
"true/false" SQL injection vulnerabilities. With "true/false" SQL injection
vulnerabilities, you cannot actually query data out of the database, only
ask a statement that is returned "true" or "false". SQLIer takes each
character's ASCII code and asks a "higher/lower" question to the database,
eventually reaching the actual character code. This script also does not
use quotes in the exploit to operate, meaning it will work for a wider
range of sites. An 8 character password (containing any character from

[032] - STUBS and Franki/Earlgrey Linux 0.9.1pre2 (Earlgrey Linux)
by William Towle (http://freshmeat.net/users/etwills/)
Thu, Aug 3rd 2006 15:22
System :: Operating System
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions :: CD-Based
About: Franki and Earlgrey Linux are small but usable Linux distributions
designed to demonstrate the full extent of STUBS, the Toolchain and
Utility Build Suite. STUBS is a set of configuration files and scripts
designed to build (and optionally employ) toolchains from just a list of
desired packages, and has scripts capable of downloading sources as
necessary beforehand. It is designed to both bootstrap and work within the
Franki Linux environment, requiring just kernel headers and working
make/gcc/binutils to do so.
Changes: This Earlgrey Linux disk image previews what can be built with
the forthcoming interim STUBS Configurations release. It includes the
changes from version 0.9.0-final that recognise the network card emulated
by QEmu.

[033] - SwingWeb 1.0.0
by thlee (http://freshmeat.net/users/thlee/)
Thu, Aug 3rd 2006 15:19
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: Swingweb is an implementation of the AWT toolkit that enables an
AWT/Swing application to operate inside a Web container and display as a
Web application to a Web browser, purely in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. No
code conversion is required for a Swing application to run in the SwingWeb
environment. SwingWeb allows a developer to use the Swing UI model for Web
application development, which should save development cost by merging the
development process of both a desktop application and a Web application.
Changes: The release includes a quick handful of fixes for the issues
reported in the forums since RC1. There are some new mechanisms added for
cleanup operations. The documentation is more complete.

[039] - UFRaw 0.9
by Udi Fuchs (http://freshmeat.net/users/udifuchs/)
Thu, Aug 3rd 2006 15:22
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
About: UFRaw is a utility for converting and manipulating raw images from
digital cameras. It can be used as a stand-alone tool or as a Gimp plugin,
and images can be batch processed using the commandline interface. UFRaw
reads most existing raw formats using Dave Coffin's raw conversion utility
DCRaw, and it supports basic color management using Little CMS, allowing
the user to apply color profiles. For Nikon users, UFRaw has the advantage
that it can read the camera's tone curves. Even if you don't own a Nikon,
you can still apply a Nikon curve to your images.
Changes: The major highlight of this release is EXIF support. This has
little to do with changes in UFRaw. It is mostly thanks to exiv2, which
added support for many raw formats. The supported formats are Canon (CRW,
CR2), Nikon (NEF), Pentax (PEF), Samsung (PEF), Sony (SR2, ARW), Fuji
(RAF), and Adobe's DNG. The official Windows binary is now built with EXIF
support. Newly supported cameras include the Minolta DiMAGE G530, Olympus
SP350, Samsung GX-1S, and Sony DSLR-A100.

Communications :: WAP
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking
About: UMTSmon is a tool to control and monitor a 3G (WCDMA, UMTS, HSDPA)
card in a laptop. It handles PIN codes, operator choice (roaming),
sending/receiving SMS, and the setup of the connection.
Changes: This release has more card autodetection: SonyEricsson GC79,
Option GT EDGE (Combo), and serial_cs-based cards like the Sierra Wireless
Aircard 775 EDGE and the Novatel Merlin UMTS Modem U630. A technology
selector was added: 3G only, 3G preferred, 2G only, etc. This is important
for fringe network coverage. The signal strength is now also visible in the
title bar when minimized, and better error checking and prevention of many
aborts will improve the user experience.
