System :: Boot
System :: Power (UPS)
System :: Systems Administration

About: The ACPI wakeup tool is a small command line application that
allows your Linux computer to wake up from soft-off (S5) at a
predetermined time. It is ideal for situations where you want to have a
server turn off at night but power itself on in the morning automatically.

[002] - AgileWiki 3.2.3.0
  by Bill la Forge (http://freshmeat.net/users/laforge49/)
  Tue, Aug 15th 2006 08:53

Database
Documentation
Information Management

About: AgileWiki is a Java-based wiki that provides a virtual wiki for
each registered user, complete with access control and versioning. The
backend includes a built-in database (which uses flat files) and
communicates via RMI to either a Servlet (packaged as a WAR file) or to a
Swing client. AgileWiki is also both an application platform and a
knowledge management system.

Changes: Three new commands were added: crInclude, restrictNamespace, and
view. Now you can craft your namespaces using Classifier Sections and the
restrictNamespace command. Also, the default displays are now much
simpler. The view command can be used to turn selected features on or off.

  by napi (http://freshmeat.net/users/napi/)
  Tue, Aug 15th 2006 01:40

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Axiomatic Multi-Platform C (AMPC) is a C compiler suite with an IDE
that generates Java bytecode (Java class files) to produce platform
independent applications. This is for Write Once Run Anywhere (WORA) with
C. AMPC supports a very large subset of ANSI C (1989). It can be used to
develop new applications using C as well as port existing applications
written in C to run on JVM enabled devices. A JNI (JVM Native Interface)
feature is available for calling native C or C++ functions. Also, numerous
Java methods can be called from AMPC. The asm() directive can be used to
embed Jasmin assembly code within C source code.

Changes: A version targeted to devices with J2ME CDC 1.1 is now available.

System :: Diagnostics
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Bartlby is a network and system monitor, completely written in C,
to provide a scalable framework with the ability to monitor networks of
various sizes. It consists of a core daemon, several plugins, and a Web
GUI (PHP extension). The core daemon checks (over active/passive TCP)
services/hosts and notifies users in case of critical service conditions
(mail, SMS, ICQ, and custom triggers are supported). Bartlby provides an
open plugin interface to give every administrator an easy to use option to
extend the plugin base, and a fully customizable GUI (written in PHP using
a C extension). Nearby everything can be controlled via an XML interface.

Changes: This release has many UI improvements, and a lot of performance
issues have been solved in all parts. The UI and the core are extensible
via a simple plugin interface. There are pre-built Debian packages for
i386 and AMD-64. A live CD ISO image is available.

[005] - BasKet 0.6.0Beta2.1 (Development)
  by Sebien (http://freshmeat.net/users/Sebien/)
  Tue, Aug 15th 2006 09:53

About: BasKet is a desktop organization tool inspired by DropDrawers (from
www.sigsoftware.com). It uses baskets and drawers for organizing various
objects, such as text, URLs, images, sounds, or other documents. Objects
in a basket can be edited, copied, moved, dragged, and so on. This allows
you to stay organized and free your desktop, or to take notes with various
types of content (not only text) in an easy way.

Changes: This release fixes some very annoying crashes and bugs in Beta 2,
especially when integrated into Kontact (it will not crash anymore, always
compiles, uses the Kontact status bar instead of adding another field,
better manages clicking on the systray icon, and restores the parameter
"--start-hidden"). It also adds Japanese and Norwegian Nynorsk
translations, and fixes various English typos.

[006] - Bible-Discovery 1.5
  by SQL Uniform Software Team (http://freshmeat.net/users/sqluniform/)
  Tue, Aug 15th 2006 09:41

Religion

About: Bible-Discovery is complex Bible studying software. It contains
several Bible translations, dictionaries, tools for helping to understand
the texts in the original language, bookmark handling, customizable font
size and colour, a biblical text importing pane, and a parallel and
comparative Bible read feature. The program engine is free, but the
extension plug-in with the Greek and Hebrew dictionaries is a shareware
product.

Changes: You can use bubble help for displaying lexical descriptions of
Strong's numbers. You can use morphology tags for the Greek Textus
Receptus Bible and some Greek inflection tables. There are more push
buttons in the program for better convenient usage. LXX (Septuagint) Bible
translation has been imported with Strong's numbers. The WLC (Hebrew) Bible
has been reimported from crosswire.org. The Bible translations import
function has been improved with a new file syntax.

Education
Information Management

About: Centre is a Web-based student information system. Centre has been
designed to address the most important needs of administrators, teachers,
support staff, parents, students, and clerical personnel. It also adds
many components not typically found in student information systems. Centre
boasts an intuitive interface to manage student demographic information,

eligibility. Centre greatly cuts down the time it takes to report to state
agencies and distribute student information to teachers, support staff, and
parents.

Changes: This release brings stability and accuracy improvements and
enhancements to Administration, Gradebook, and Attendance. Gradebook
changes include two styles of personalized report card comments, full year
marking periods and full year grades, percentages for final grades, marking
of period grades, exams, and comments checkboxes, a schoolwide grading
scale and custom gradescale checkbox for course periods, grade scale
comments, and improvements in the input of final grades. Attendance
columns are now color coded so teachers can easily see which students are
present or absent.

[011] - class.upload.php 0.20
  by Colin Verot (http://freshmeat.net/users/verot/)
  Tue, Aug 15th 2006 08:37

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: class.upload.php manages file uploads for you. It manages the
uploaded file and allows you to do whatever you want with the file as many
times as you want. If the file is an image, you can convert and resize it,
rotate it, and crop it in many ways. You can also add borders, frames,
bevels, add of text labels and watermarks, or apply graphic filters such
as contrast or brightness correction, colorization, negative, threshold,
greyscale, and more. Security features and file management functions are
provided. The class can also work on local files, which is useful for
batch processing images online.

Changes: This release add some more error checking and messages. Uploading
files without an extension was fixed. The possibility to automatically and
recursively create and chmod the destination directory if it is missing
was added. Images can now be cropped, color invert, turned into greyscale,
and have a threshold filter applied. A bevel border, a single color border,
or a multicolored frame can be added to images.

[012] - cryptmount 1.1
  by rwpenney (http://freshmeat.net/users/rwpenney/)
  Tue, Aug 15th 2006 16:13

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Filesystems

About: cryptmount assists system administrators in setting up encrypted
filesystems based on the device mapper (dm-crypt) of GNU/Linux systems
using a 2.6-series kernel. After initial setup, it allows any user to
mount or unmount filesystems on demand, solely by providing the decryption
password, with any system devices needed to access the filing system being
configured automatically. A wide variety of encryption schemes (provided
by the kernel and OpenSSL library) can be used to protect both the filing
system and the access key. The protected filing systems can reside in
either ordinary files or disk partitions.

Changes: Support for crypto-swap was added. Support for setting up
filesystems/devices/swap during system boot was added. Optional support
for using libgcrypt in place of OpenSSL was added.

[013] - Cypher 0.7.2
  by sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/sdmonroe/)
  Tue, Aug 15th 2006 09:49

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Text Processing :: General
Text Processing :: Linguistic

About: Cypher generates the .rdf (RDF graph) and .serql (SeRQL query)
representation of a plain language input. With robust definition
languages, its grammar and lexicon can quickly and easily be extended to
process highly complex sentences and phrases of any natural language, and
can cover any vocabulary. Programmers can build next generation semantic
Web applications that harness natural language.

Changes: The hard-coded reference to smonroe login for the Sesame server
has been removed. This release runs under Sun's Java 1.5.
NumberTranscoder_LITERAL has been added, which allows natural language
numbers to generate integer representation: the integer is wrapped in RDF
literals of type xsd:nonNegativeInteger and xsd:NegativeInteger. A new
number pattern grammar example has been added to exploit the number
transcoder.

[014] - DiffJ 1.1.0
  by Jeff Pace (http://freshmeat.net/users/JEugenePace/)
  Tue, Aug 15th 2006 05:57

Software Development

About: DiffJ is a commandline application that compares Java files based
on content, not whitespace, comments, or reordering of types, methods, or
fields. Its output is based on the Unix program diff, and it also has a
"brief" output format for a concise summary of what changed. It can work
on directories recursively, looking for matching filenames, like "diff -r
dir0 dir1". It is primarily for developers refactoring and reformatting
Java code, for which most difference tools tend to produce misleading
results regarding the type and extent of changes.

Changes: This release has been rewritten to handle Java 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5.
Significant improvements have been made in performance and memory usage.

About: GtkPSproc is a GUI frontend for PSUTILS. It allows you to adjust
all programs to your printer type (for example, always sending the pages
in reverse order), to group two or more pages on a single sheet, to print
booklets, and to easily print in double-sided fashion. It is designed to
work from nearly all programs that call LPR, acting as an intermediary
between the program and LPR, but it can work alone, too.

Changes: The program can now be integrated into CUPS, so you no longer
need to configure each program to use GtkPSproc. Just choose the virtual
printer and print. Support for multiple printers, each with their own
options was added. When printing as a book, the even pages are rotated 180
degrees to make it compatible with double-side capable printers. Evince is
now used as the default preview program. The ability to choose the output
printer was simplified. Book format now works with non-A4 paper sizes.
libglade is now used.

About: Logback is intended as a successor to the popular log4j project,
and was designed by log4j's founder, Ceki Gulcu. The basic architecture is
sufficiently generic so as to apply under different circumstances. It is
divided into three modules. The Core module lays the groundwork for the
other two modules. The Classic module can be assimilated to an improved
version of log4j. It natively implements the SLF4J API so that you can
readily switch back and forth between logback and other logging systems,
such as log4j or JDK14 Logging. The Access module integrates with Servlet
containers to provide HTTP access log functionality. You can easily build
your own modules on top of the Core module.

Software Development

About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server system based on the X11
protocol. In addition, NX also translates and embeds the MS Windows
Terminal Server and VNC protocols into X/NX. NX is an order of magnitude
faster than VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec.
By embedding RDP and RFB, it enables users to compress and accelerate
remote Windows and VNC sessions. NX lets you work fluently even across
slow links like modems. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and
X11 proxying agents implementing efficient compression and optimized
transport of X11, SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio over
the  Internet.

Changes: This package provides fixes (together with the new node) for a
number of problems affecting the previous releases. This includes failure
of the X11 agent to start because of missing the "fixed" font, the absence
of some fonts in X11 sessions, the failure of the desktop background to be
restored after resuming, and the inability of the node to start a session
when configured to accept only encrypted connections and the session is
running on the same node server machine.

[047] - NRL NORM 1.3b9
  by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
  Tue, Aug 15th 2006 15:14

System :: Networking

About: NRL NORM is an implementation of NACK-Oriented Reliable Multicast.
The NORM protocol is designed to provide end-to-end reliable transport of
bulk data objects or streams over generic IP multicast routing and
forwarding services. NORM uses a selective, negative acknowledgement
(NACK) mechanism for transport reliability and offers additional protocol
mechanisms to conduct reliable multicast sessions with limited "a priori"
coordination among senders and receivers. The protocol offers a number of
features to allow different types of applications or possibly other higher
level transport protocols to utilize its service in different ways. The
protocol leverages the use of FEC-based repair and other IETF reliable
multicast transport (RMT) building blocks in its design.

Changes: This release fixes several moderate to major bugs, including
divide-by-zero, assertion failures, and incorrect pointer dereferencing.
It fixes numerous minor bugs.

[048] - OpenVZ kernel 2.6.9-023stab016.2 (RHEL4)
  by Kir Kolyshkin (http://freshmeat.net/users/k001/)
  Tue, Aug 15th 2006 05:46

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: OpenVZ is a modified Linux kernel with additional support for
OpenVZ Virtual Environments (VE, also known as VPS). VEs are isolated,
secure environments on a single physical server, enabling better server
utilization and ensuring that applications do not conflict. Each VE
performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server; VEs can be
rebooted independently and have root access, users, IP addresses, memory,
processes, files, applications, system libraries, and configuration files.
Due to a single kernel model, OpenVZ has native performance and very high
density. It is the core of Virtuozzo.

Changes: This kernel has the same functionality and feature set as the
base RHEL4u3 kernel, combined with the power of OpenVZ virtualization
technology. Compared to the current stable (2.6.8-based) kernels, it has
checkpointing and virtual ethernet features added.

features, some versions of the patch contain various security fixes. The
"hardening" features of the patch, while not a complete method of
protection, provide an extra layer of security against the easier ways to

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: Sendmail Sender Address Validator is a lightweight, fast, and
reliable Sendmail milter that implements a real-time Sender e-mail Address
Verification technology. This can stop some kinds of spam with a spoofed
sender's email address. It also implements real-time recipient email
address verification, which can be useful if your machine is a backup MX
for the recipient's domains, or if your machine forwards all email
messages as a relay host for your domains to another internal or external
email server. It is a light alternative for the spamilter, milter-sender
and milter-ahead milters.

Changes: Initial support for an external configuration file was
implemented. The thread-safe resolver API is now used under Solaris. The
BIND 8 thread-safe resolver is now used instead of the non-thread-safe
resolver under FreeBSD. The new TODO tasks were added.

[064] - ServingXML 0.5.3
  by Daniel Parker (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielaparker/)
  Tue, Aug 15th 2006 22:51

Database
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: ServingXML is a markup language for expressing XML pipelines and an
extensible Java framework for defining the elements of the language. It
defines a vocabulary for expressing flat-XML, XML-flat, flat-flat, and
XML-XML transformations in pipelines. The accompanying console app
supports reading content as XML files, flat files, SQL queries, or SAX
events, and writing it as XML, HTML, PDF, or mail attachments. This
software is especially suited for converting flat file or database records
to XML, with its support for namespaces, variant record types, multi-valued
fields, segments and repeating groups, hierarchical grouping of records,
and row-by-row validation with XML Schema. There is also an API for
embedding the software in a Java application.

Changes: This version introduces chained record readers, where the output
of the first reader is used in the selection criteria of the second
reader. This supports, for example, joins between rows in two different
databases, or joins between rows in a flat file and a database. Also, an
sx:sqlUpdateChoice element has been added that submits one of two update
statements depending on the results of a query. This allows "if exists
update else insert" logic.

[077] - VRaptor 2.1

  Tue, Aug 15th 2006 08:32

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: VRaptor 2 is a Web-based MVC and IOC framework based on many
frameworks and ideas (Seam, Stripes, Webwork, Hibernate Annotations, etc).
It makes full use of Java 5 Annotations. It favors convention over
configuration, because configuration in XML/properties/annotations is
always easy to make mistakes and repetitive (aka copy and paste in many
places). This framework uses a more imperative approach, instead of having
many XML files to configure lifecycle and other properties. Most of the
settings go inside plain Java objects (POJO), so the team knows exactly
what is going on and where.

Changes: This version comes with a lot of new features, including a
Portuguese translation of the docs. All current bugs were closed.
Conversion exceptions support and code design were improved. Fewer
dependencies are needed. There is a new component scope, capable of
feeding and retrieving managed beans from the session and, in the near
future, work just like jsf (but simpler). VRaptor now supports the default
Date conversion and non-internationalized error messages. New documentation
is also provided.

About: Webalizer Xtended is an extension of Webalizer which adds a number
of features and improvements, such as monthly statistics for all "404 Not
Found" errors, including the number of the "404 Not Found" requests and
the corresponding 404 URLs. Furthermore, all colors of the statistics can
be defined by the user. It also fixes several (security-related) bugs in
the original Webalizer code and contains the Geolizer patch to generate
faster and more reliable geographic statistics than the default DNS suffix
method.

Changes: This release implements the Geolizer patch and changes it to
generate reliable geographic statistics even with DNS features enabled and
to generate geographic statistics with the currently compiled-in language.
It adjusts the German and French language files to fully support Geolizer.
It adds a human-readable transfer size feature (KB, MB, GB, TB, PB, EB) and

[083] - XINS 1.5.0-alpha4 (Development)
  by Anthony Goubard (http://freshmeat.net/users/agoubard/)

Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Build Tools

About: XINS is a technology used to define, create, and invoke remote
APIs. XINS is specification-oriented. When API specifications are written
(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.

Changes: Beside some bugfixes, this release introduces dependency between
parameters based on a parameter value. Logging and conditional redirection
are now correct in the front-end calling convention.

[084] - xmlformat 1.04
  by Paul DuBois (http://freshmeat.net/users/pauldubois/)

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: xmlformat is a configurable formatter (or "pretty-printer") for XML
documents. It gives the user control over indentation, line-breaking, and
text wrapping. These properties can be defined on a per-element basis.

Changes: Each token is now assigned an input line number, which is
displayed in error messages. This provides better information to the user
about the location of problems in input files. The token stack is now
printed when an error occurs. This provides some idea of the context of
the element that is malformed or has malformed content.
