Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio

About: The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture is composed of several parts.
The first is a fully modularized sound driver which supports module
autoloading, devfs, isapnp autoconfiguration, and gives complete access to
analog audio, digital audio, control, mixer, synthesizer, DSP, MIDI, and
timer components of audio hardware. It also includes a fully-featured
kernel-level sequencer, a full compatibility layer for OSS/Free
applications, an object-oriented C library which covers and enhances the
ALSA kernel driver functionality for applications (client/server, plugins,
PCM sharing/multiplexing, PCM metering, etc.), an interactive configuration
program for the driver, and some simple utilities for basic management.

Changes: Building with kernel 2.6.18 was fixed. V4L detection on previous
kernels was fixed. Support for AK5365 AD/DA converters was added.
Operation on some Asus W6A chips as well as the support for UDA1380 were
fixed. Several minor bugs were fixed.

[005] - APIlitAx 1.0.0
  by Thomas Steiner (http://freshmeat.net/users/googletomac/)
  Wed, Aug 16th 2006 10:38

About: APIlitAx is an Ajax application that allows users to manage their
Google AdWords accounts in an interactive and asynchronous way. The
application behaves almost like a program on your desktop, but runs
entirely in your Web browser. The name APIlitAx is a combination of the
names of the two central components of the application: APIlity and Ajax.

Changes: Many modifications to the UI: the layout has been highly
compressed, so now it also supports smaller screens. All objects have the
same consistent set of icons: Update, Delete, Details, [Detach]. Creatives
are presented in a WYSIWYG way; the mouseover feature has been removed.
Fully supports Javascript windows, including iconifying, maximizing,
scrolling, and resizing of windows. Windows have a "PeakBehind" icon. The
code base has been completely refactored. Support has been added for
exemption requests for creatives and criteria. Tested on many browsers,
including IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Konqueror, and Camino.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis

About: The aim of auch is to visualize harmonics in musical recordings and
the effect of analog/digital filters on the spectrum. There are plenty of
tools that visualize the spectrum. The difference here is that one or two
octaves can be focused on, so that notes, chords, and harmonics become
clear. Another feature is that this tool is aimed comparing audio out (eg.
a .wav file) with audio in. This way, external filters added between the
audio output and input of your sound card can be studied.

Changes: An important bugfix in c5 style display. A new c5c style graph.
More experiments.

Other/Nonlisted Topic
Software Development
Software Development :: Build Tools

About: AutoGen is a tool designed for generating program files that
contain repetitive text with varied substitutions. Its goal is to simplify
the maintenance of programs that contain large amounts of repetitious text.
This is especially valuable if there are several blocks of such text that
must be kept synchronized. Output is specified with a Scheme-enhanced
output template. Input, if required by your template, may come from
AutoGen definitions, CGI data, or XML files.

Changes: You can now emit text into a suspended output stream. String
tables make it very easy to produce an array of characters containing NUL
terminated strings. Suffix specifications in the pseudo macro may now
construct an output file name format string. The scheme function
"version-compare" will allow you to compare two dotted version numbers.
#assert is now active in definition files.

[009] - BatRen 0.3
  by ThuBi (http://freshmeat.net/users/thubi/)
  Wed, Aug 16th 2006 07:44

About: BatRen is an automatic file rename tool. The main goal is to
provide a simple way to batch rename collections of files, such as photo
collections. It accepts prefixing and suffixing, a starting index value,
and counter padding formats. If the output file already exists, the
counter is increased until an unused filename is found.

Changes: Support for moving files was added. Padding is automatically
adjusted to fit the largest counter value. Default padding is one
character long. A bug was fixed where a non-ASCII character would have
been prepended to the counter if the length of the counter string was
greater than the length of the padding string.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development
Software Development :: Bug Tracking

About: Codestriker is a Web application that supports online code reviews.
Traditional document reviews are supported, as well as reviewing diffs
generated by an SCM (Source Code Management) system and plain unidiff
patches. There are integration points with CVS, Subversion, Clearcase,
Perforce, Visual SourceSafe, and Bugzilla. There is a plug-in architecture
for supporting other SCMs and issue tracking systems. It minimizes paper
work, ensures that issues, comments, and decisions are recorded in a
database, and provides a comfortable workspace for actually performing
code inspections. An optional highly-configurable metrics subsystem allows
you to record code inspection metrics as a part of your process.

Changes: Codestriker now stores text as UTF-8 in order to support code
reviews in Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or other languages. Support for
ClearCase dynamic views was added, along with better support for Perforce.
Support for parsing CVS and Subversion corner-case diffs was improved.
Emails can now be sent using SMTP authentication. Memory usage when linked
to large LXR databases was improved. Repositories can now be displayed with
a configurable display name rather than the full URL. Invalid bug IDs will
be handled when entered in the create/modify topic screen. A number of
other minor bugs were fixed.

[019] - conexus I/O Library 0.3.0
  by Rick Vinyard (http://freshmeat.net/users/rvinyard/)
  Wed, Aug 16th 2006 23:34

Communications
Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries

About: conexus is a generalized C++ I/O library that includes support for
IPv4 and IPv6 sockets, serial/TTY communications, and packet capture (via
pcap). It utilizes sigc++ for object communication. A companion library,
conexusmm, provides a set of gtkmm widgets.

Changes: In this release, the threading model has been simplified and
restructured to eliminate the use of pthread_cancel() and use Glibmm's
Thread and Mutex classes. The UDPPoset class is also new and provides for
partially ordered UDP unicast transmission groups. The PacketCapture class
has been removed since its dependency on pcap no longer fits with the
threading model, and a similar LL::Packet class fulfills most basic IP
layer capturing. There are also a few bugfixes, some other minor
enhancements, and a little more documentation.

in the tarball for more information.

Changes: This release adds a few new progress widgets such as Spinner and
ProgressBar to the toolset. Both widgets can have conexus endpoints
attached and will provide feedback (spinning or pulsing) based on the data
flow through the endpoint. The EndpointStopButton has been rewritten,
adding a little more functionality, and the Conexusmm namespace has been

[022] - Cryptogram Puzzle Tool 4.2.0
  by Jeff Edwards (http://freshmeat.net/users/ecsi/)
  Wed, Aug 16th 2006 13:33

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

About: Cryptogram Puzzle Tool helps solve the simple cryptogram puzzles
that appear in the daily newspapers. While these puzzles can often be
solved almost by inspection, CPT4 provides a handy tool the ones that turn
out to be not quite so easy. If you just want a little bookkeeping help,
CPT4 will instantly update all occurances of the new assignments as well
as provide frequency and used/not-used letter lists as you drag-and-drop
or key in suspected solution letters. But if you'd rather have the
computer do the work, the automatic solution algorithm will usually come
very close to a complete solution in just a few seconds. CPT4 can also
create new puzzles from keyed in plaintext or from a file.

Changes: This release changes fixed width font logic, including special
cursor logic using the fixed fonts, to preprocessed fonts supplied as C
header files, instead of using Pango routines and arbitrary fonts. It has
been updated to use glib 2.6.1, Gtk+2.6.1, Pango 1.8.0, atk 1.9.0, and
associated packages as supplied in Slackware 10.0. Functionality is
virtually unchanged.

[023] - Dir::List 1.4
  by Oliver Falk (http://freshmeat.net/users/opitzeier/)
  Wed, Aug 16th 2006 16:50

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules

About: Dir::List is a Perl module, that provides you with various
information about a specified directory. For example, it can obtain the
user and group of files, the sizes of sub-directories, the filetype, and
accessibility. Caching functionality is available.

Changes: The unmaintained Changes has been removed. Some missing
requirements have been added. This release deletes $self->{list} at the
beginning of dirinfo, in order to not return 'old' results (this is
especially a problem in mod_perl where you only instantiate one
Dir::List).

About: Emdros is a text database engine for annotated or analyzed text. It
is applicable in linguistics, publishing, text processing, and other fields
dealing with annotated text. Emdros has a powerful query language for
asking relevant questions of the data. It is middleware, acting as a layer
between a client (written by the user), and an underlying database.
PostgreSQL and MySQL are supported.

Changes: Several small bugs were fixed. On MySQL, string comparisons are
now case-sensitive, and the [client] group is read from MySQL's
configuration file before connecting. The build system was upgraded to
build on modern systems, including Solaris 10. The documentation is now
included.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: Exaile is a media player aiming to be similar to KDE's AmaroK, but
for GTK+. It incorporates many of the features from AmaroK (and other
media players) like automatic fetching of album art, handling of large
libraries, lyrics fetching, artist/album information via the wikipedia,
last.fm support, and optional iPod support (assuming you have python-gpod
installed). In addition, it includes a built in shoutcast directory
browser, tabbed playlists (so you can have more than one playlist open at
a time), blacklisting of tracks (so they don't get scanned into your
library), downloading of guitar tablature from fretplay.com, and
submitting played tracks on your iPod to last.fm.

Changes: Some threading bugs have been fixed that used to cause exaile to
deadlock. General gst (files not supported by mutagen) metadata reading
has been improved. python-pymad and python-pyogg deps have been removed
(thanks to a mutagen update). A bug that caused files on disk with special
characters in the name to not play has been fixed. There are general
stability fixes from the forums.

Software Development :: Build Tools
Utilities

About: Flagpoll is a tool for developers to use meta-data files for
storing information on what is needed to compile their software. Think of
it as the rpm of software development. It provides developers with total
control over which packages, versions, architectures, et cetera that they
want to use meta-data from. Instead of specifying other packages' cflags
and ldflag manually, you can call `flagpoll mylib --cflags --ldflags` and
it will retrieve the flags for its package as well as its dependencies.

Changes: The ability to see a packages options for -get/-require was added
via the command line option --print-pkg-options. The info option was
cleaned up so that it doesn't just print a dictionary dump from Python. An
OS X package was added as well as a basic installable tarball. Numerous
small bugfixes and documentation updates were made.

About: Libsqlfs is a library used in conjunction with SQLite that allows
applications to put an entire read/write file system into a relational
database as a single file in the host filesystem. Such a
filesystem-in-a-file can easily be moved around, backed up, or restored as
a single file. The filesystem can also be accessed as individual files
through FUSE (File System in User Space). This provides great flexibility

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: In their portfolio space, students can now see the version of
files that they submitted for grading, and the version of those files that
instructors might have handed back with annotations. Users can now
advertise their public and passphrase-protected portfolio files on their
"About Me" page. For instructors, the display of the list of students who
will join their courses later versus those who have dropped their courses
is improved. The Chart statistics function should now run faster.

[055] - NeatUpload 1.2.8
  by Dean Brettle (http://freshmeat.net/users/brettle/)
  Wed, Aug 16th 2006 13:34

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Libraries

About: NeatUpload allows ASP.NET developers to stream uploaded files to
disk and allows users to monitor upload progress. It works under Mono's
XSP/mod_mono as well as Microsoft's ASP.NET implementation and features
two custom controls. InputFile allows the user to select a file to upload
and ProgressBar displays the upload progress either inline or in a popup.
ProgressBar even allows users without JavaScript to see upload progress.

Changes: This is a minor bugfix release. It fixes a bug where an inline
progress display would show an error when an upload finished if the length
of an uploaded file could not be determined (e.g. because the aspx code had
changed the file's permissions).

Utilities

About: netrw is a simple (but powerful) tool for transporting data over
the Internet. Its main purpose is to simplify and speed up file transfers
to hosts without an FTP server. It can also be used for uploading data to
some other user. It is something like one-way netcat (nc) with some nice
features concerning data transfers. It can compute and check message
digest (MD5, SHA-1, and some others) of all the data being transferred. It
can also print information on progress and average speed. At the end, it
sums up the transfer.

Changes: A SIGSEGV which occurred when the control connection is closed
during initialization was fixed.

Education

About: Notalon is an application designed to make taking Cornell notes
faster. The purpose of Notalon is to remove the burden of format from the
user. It leaves the writing to the writer, and the dirty work to the
application. The target end users are students and others who wish to take
Cornell notes.

Changes: The most significant change is internationalization (i18n) and
Unicode support. Several bugs that were caused by ASCII strings have been
removed by the introduction of Unicode. Another bug, which caused the
document to be set as modified at improper times, has also been removed.
As for the GUI, the tabbed window in the Preferences dialog has been
replaced with a more appealing Listbook with icons.

[060] - Packetflow Firewall Generator 1.0
  by pfrieden (http://freshmeat.net/users/pfrieden/)
  Wed, Aug 16th 2006 17:06

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
Utilities

About: PacketFlow Firewall Generator is an XML-based firewall generator.
It takes an XML configuration file that defines the firewall policy and
generates a list of iptables commands to implement this policy. It is
primarily intended for use on dedicated firewalls, but it can be used in
other scenarios. It makes dealing with many interfaces easy. PacketFlow
works on the concept of interface "security levels." New connections are
allowed to flow down hill from interfaces with a high security level to
interfaces with a low security level. This approach tends to make rule
sets much shorter, even with many interfaces. Access lists allow you to
override the default behavior of the security levels. Access lists are
defined between interfaces. There is also support for incoming, outgoing,
and wildcard access lists. Wildcard access lists allow you to easily allow
new connections to a particular service from any interface.

Changes: This version no longer uses the unclean match, because it isn't
available in kernel 2.6. The Debian packages have been updated to work
correctly with newer releases, and the version has been updated to 1.0.

Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: Papyrus is a 2D C++ scenegraph (canvas) library that utilizes the
cairo library to perform drawing operations. Similar canvas libraries are
the Gnome Canvas, Diacanvas, and the QT Canvas. Numerous canvas primitives
are available, including arcs, rectangles, polylines, and line markers. An
optional companion library, Papyrusmm, provides a set of Gtkmm widgets
which includes viewports (a canvas display widget similar to
Gtk::DrawingArea) and other UI widgets related to drawing interfaces.

Changes: This release introduces simple frame-based animators and
event-based controllers to the papyrus canvas library. The companion
libpapyrusgtk has been renamed to libpapyrusmm. The namespace remains
PapyrusGtk, similar to the GTK namespace in Gtkmm. Several animator
control widgets have also been added to papyrusmm to support papyrus'
animators. There are a couple of bugfixes, other small improvements,
cleanup, added examples, and some work on the documentation.

System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: PBNJ is a network suite to monitor changes that occur on a network
over time. It does this by checking for changes on the target machine(s),
which includes the details about the services running on them as well as
the service state. PBNJ parses the data from a scan and stores it in a
database. It uses Nmap to perform scans.

Changes: PBNJ 2.0 is completely different from 1.0. The most drastic
change is that 2.0 stores the information from a scan in the database. It
also has queries that can extract the information that is most useful to
the user. When the user wants to extract information, this release
extracts the information into a Perl data structure, so there can be
multiple output methods such as tab, CSV, and HTML. It can also accept
input from nmap in XML format. This allows it to be more flexible than
version 1.0.

About: PHPGallue is a multi-user, server-oriented image management system
with a Web frontend. PHPGallue is suited for photographers to organize and
publish their work. It allows the user to mark images, groups, categories,
films, and series as private or as only visible to registered users. It is
designed especially for large numbers of images. The Web frontend and
backend libraries are completely separated, so it is easy to integrate
PHPGallue as a management system into existing Web applications.

Changes: This release fixes some non-critical bugs and improves the Web
interface handling; in the details view, for example, navigation arrows
hover inside the images. The setup script was improved by a lot of tracing
code that already helped to fix problems with PHP 5 FastCGI binaries. With
this release, FastCGI, CGI, and CLI binaries work equivalently. This
release also incorporates an .rpm and a .deb package for the first time.

About: The seccure toolset implements a selection of asymmetric algorithms
based on elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). In particular, it offers public
key encryption / decryption, signature generation / verification and key
establishment. ECC schemes offer a much better key size to security
ratio than classical systems (RSA, DSA). Keys are short enough to make
direct specification of keys on the command line possible (sometimes this
is more convenient than the management of PGP-like key rings). seccure
builds on this feature and therefore is the tool of choice whenever

Information Management :: Document Repositories

About: SiSU (Structured information, Serialized Units) is a command line
driven document creation and management framework. With minimal markup of
a plaintext file, it produces: plain-text, HTML, XHTML, XML, ODF
(OpenDocument), LaTeX, PDF, and populates an SQL database (PostgreSQL or
SQLite) at an object/paragraph level for "atomic searches". Prepare
documents using your text editor of choice, then use SiSU to generate the
desired output formats. Vim 7 provides syntax highlighting for SiSU
markup. (For earlier versions, a syntax highlighting file is provided).

System :: Operating System
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions

About: Source Mage GNU/Linux is a source-based Linux distribution based on
a magical metaphor of "casting" and "dispelling" programs, which are
referred to as "spells". In multi-tasking style, it downloads the sources
in the background while compiling in the foreground. Source Mage's
"sorcery" offers advanced package management, but retains the choices,
options, and control not offered by many other distributions.

Changes: This release was updated with the latest stable grimoire. A few
minor typos were fixed.

[084] - SunflowerApplet 0.1
  by Kevin DeKorte (http://freshmeat.net/users/kdekorte/)
  Wed, Aug 16th 2006 17:53

Desktop Environment :: Tools

About: SunflowerApplet changes the shadow on the windows managed by compiz
when the decorator plugin is enabled. The shadow on the window moves from
left to right from 6am to 6pm, and stays static from 6pm to 6am, as if the
shadow is being cast by the "sun" moving right to left over your windows.
This is just a toy. It requires compiz to be the window manager and the
compiz decorator plugin to be active.

  Wed, Aug 16th 2006 10:40

About: System_Stats_WebView is a utility that provides various statistics
about the system on which it is running. These statistics are displayed as
3D plots using the Tchartlib JavaScript library. Users can access these
statistics through a Web interface.

Changes: The SYSTEM_STATS.pl and SYSTEM_STATS.eng scripts have been
modified to allow the display of system statistics for user-specified
start and end times. SYSTEM_STATS.pl has been enhanced to provide a
JavaScript pop-up calendar and pull-downs to set analysis start and end.
SYSTEM_STATS.eng has been rewritten to support any number of samples. A
new launch page has been added that starts a window with the proper
dimensions to display the charts, and is non-resizable.

Information Management

About: Tellico is a collection manager for KDE. It includes default
collections for books, bibliographies, comic books, videos, music, video
games, coins, stamps, trading cards, and wines, and also allows custom
collections. Unlimited user-defined fields are allowed. Filters are
available to limit the visible entries by definable criteria. Full
customization for printing is possible through editing the default XSLT
file. It can import CSV, Bibtex, Bibtexml, RIS, MODS, CDDB, and audio file
metadata and exports CSV, HTML, Bibtex, Bibtexml, ONIX, and PilotDB.
Entries may be imported directly from Amazon.com, imdb.com, any z39.50
bibliographic server, PubMed, or an external script.

Changes: New templates and scripts can now be downloaded directly from the
config dialog. Fonts and colors can be specified for the entry templates. A
preset list of z39.50 servers was added. Searching of isbndb.org,
allocine.fr, Dark Horse Comics, and the Spanish Ministry of Culture was
added. Data sources can now be set to overwrite existing data, and support
for unmodified CueCat scanners was added. Several memory leaks were fixed,
and the HTML export was fully validated.

About: xen-shell is a simple console program to allow a hosting company to
delegate control of Xen instances directly to their clients. The shell
allows a user to boot, shutdown, or reimage their own personal Xen guest
without giving the user general access to the Xen host system or allowing
the user to touch the instances of other users.

Changes: This release updates the documentation to fully describe the
reimaging and reverse-DNS support which is available in the shell.

About: xen-tools is a collection of scripts that allow you to manipulate
virtual images for the Xen virtualization software. With the tools
installed, you may create new instances of Debian, complete with
networking, OpenSSH, and user accounts, with one simple command. Images
may also be easily updated, listed, or deleted.

Changes: This release improves the included manpages significantly, adding
clearer text and removing the inappropriate documentation of internal
functions. There are several new command line flags which will interest
users, especially those who are using a 64-bit host machine. The new
options allow the architechture to be specified for guests, avoid
mandatory swap-volume creation, and allow new Xen template files to be
created. There were also several minor bugfixes.
