Information Management

About: AgileWiki is a Java-based wiki that provides a virtual wiki for
each registered user, complete with access control and versioning. The
backend includes a built-in database (which uses flat files) and
communicates via RMI to either a Servlet (packaged as a WAR file) or to a
Swing client. AgileWiki is also both an application platform and a
knowledge management system.

Changes: There is a new copy command which does a deep copy of present (or
past) state. It includes a built-in browse capability, as does the move
command now. The orderChildren command has also been greatly enhanced.
This release completes the core agility features. Note that the
compstrm/agilewiki project at SourceForge is being restored, so this
release only (hopefully) can be found on java.net.

  Fri, Aug 25th 2006 10:12

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet
(AoE) network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block
devices like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as
local device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).

Changes: This release adds better support for multiple network paths to
the same AoE target. This driver should help users to make storage systems
highly available by using redundant network paths.

  Fri, Aug 25th 2006 07:13

Communications :: Email
Internet
System :: Archiving

About: basE91 is an advanced method for encoding binary data as ASCII
characters. It is similar to UUencode or base64, but is more efficient.
The overhead produced by basE91 depends on the input data. It amounts at
most to 23% (versus 33% for base64) and can range down to 14%, which
typically occurs on 0-byte blocks. This makes basE91 very useful for
transferring larger files over binary insecure connections like e-mail or
terminal lines.

Changes: The source code has been cleaned to avoid errors and warnings
with the latest gcc versions, and the DOS assembly encoder has been
rewritten to be faster and compatible down to Intel 8086.

  Fri, Aug 25th 2006 10:11

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Scientific/Engineering
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: cb2Bib is a tool for rapidly extracting unformatted bibliographic
references from email alerts, journal Web pages, and PDF files. It
facilitates the capture of single references from unformatted sources.
References are written in BibTeX. A PDF file with the article text, if
available, can be easily linked and renamed by dragging it onto the
cb2Bib window. Reference manager applications can later retrieve,
import, and display these BibTeX references.

Changes: This release has been ported from Qt3 to Qt4. Qt experienced many
changes and improvements in this major release upgrade. Relevant to cb2Bib,
these changes will provide a better file management, word completion,
faster searches, and better desktop integration. As one might expect,
major upgrades introduce new bugs that must be fixed. This 0.6.90 is
actually a preview version. It has approximately the same functionality as
its predecessor; no additions were considered at this point.

[013] - dvd::rip 0.98.1 (Stable)
  by Jörn Reder (http://freshmeat.net/users/jred/)
  Fri, Aug 25th 2006 10:14

Multimedia :: Video :: Conversion

About: dvd::rip is a full featured DVD copy program written in Perl. It
provides an easy-to-use but feature-rich GTK+ GUI to control almost all
aspects of the ripping and transcoding process. It uses the widely known
video processing swissknife, transcode, and many other Open Source tools.

Changes: This release fixes many minor bugs. Spaces in the VOB file path
were not refused, but gave incorrect error messages on TOC reading later.
An exception when TOC reading failed for some reason (e.g. no DVD in
drive) was fixed. When changing the DVD drive in the Preferences window,
result checking output wasn't updated.

[014] - Enhanced TightVNC Viewer 1.0.1
  by Karl Runge (http://freshmeat.net/users/runge/)
  Fri, Aug 25th 2006 08:48

Desktop Environment :: Tools

About: The Enhanced TightVNC Viewer package is part of the x11vnc VNC
server project. It provides a native VNC viewer that takes advantage of
new features in x11vnc, e.g. cursor alpha blending and automatic SSL
tunnelling. Some features apply to any VNC server, e.g. automatic SSH
tunnelling. Another goal is to provide a package that conveniently bundles
everything needed for the user to have the enhanced viewer running quickly.
This includes pre-built binaries of the viewer and utility programs for
Windows and many Unix variants, and a GUI to configure and launch the
viewer.

Changes: This release adds new features to the TightVNC Unix viewer and
provides GUI and commandline tools that automatically initialize SSL- or
SSH-encrypted VNC tunnels on both Unix and Windows. The new Unix features
are: NewFBSize support (screen resizing), exact alphablending for
transparent cursors, and an XGrabServer mode for legacy window managers.
SSL and SSH tunneling is accomplished by using bundled stunnel and plink
executables. The SSL mode is intended for use with x11vnc's built-in SSL
support, but works with any VNC server using stunnel or another SSL
tunnel.

  by Emil Brink (http://freshmeat.net/users/emilbrink/)
  Fri, Aug 25th 2006 07:17

Desktop Environment :: File Managers

About: gentoo is a file manager written in C. It uses the GTK+ toolkit,
and the two-pane concept, somewhat inspired by DOpus. gentoo strives to be
very configurable, and also to let you do all configuration from a GUI
within the program itself. Using advanced file typing and styling systems,
gentoo determines how to display files in its listings, and also how to act
on them. The package includes a set of over 120 unique handcrafted icons,
for many different types of files.

Changes: Copying to a Samba mount should be more robust now. Protection
bit copying is no longer always considered fatal. RenameSeq now works on
VFAT filesystems again. This release adds a "Map" mode to the RenameRE
command and should run better on Ubuntu now, fixing a locale-setting bug
that caused gentoo to fail.

[029] - KSmoothDock 4.0
  by dangvd (http://freshmeat.net/users/dangvd/)
  Fri, Aug 25th 2006 18:35

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)

About: KSmoothDock is a desktop panel, similar to KDE's kicker, for KDE
3.2. Its most distinctive feature is smooth icon zooming in one of two
modes: normal and parabolic. Its aim is to provide a cool alternative and
complement to kicker. As it is intended for KDE and Linux, its behavior
resembles that of kicker.

Changes: The program has been redesigned and rewritten from scratch. It
should now run better overall and is easier to maintain. Now the dock can
be set to top, bottom, left, or right on the screen. Switching zoom mode
no longer requires restarting the dock. A left click on the clock shows
the calendar. A "create a new link to folder" button has been added to the
Edit Quick Launch Menu dialog. The pager now displays mini-wallpapers
correctly when the dock starts. Other minor bugs have been fixed.

[047] - OpenDBX 1.1.4 (Development)
  by Norbert Sendetzky (http://freshmeat.net/users/nsendetzky/)
  Fri, Aug 25th 2006 14:30

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries

About: OpenDBX is an extremely lightweight but extensible C library for
accessing databases with a single API. It provides a clean and simple
interface across all supported databases that leads to an elegant code
design automatically. Currently, Firebird/Interbase, MySQL, PostgreSQL,
SQLite, and SQL Server (MS and Sybase) are supported, and backends for
more native database APIs can be written easily.

Changes: This is another major improvement on the road to ANSI
compatibility for all backends. The MySQL and MSSQL/Sybase operate by
default in ANSI mode, and the freetds backend was updated to be in line
with the other backends when handling date and time data types. In
addition, the errno clash in odbx.h and bugs in the firebird and freetds
backends were fixed. Specifically, a NULL pointer check was added and the
number of affected rows were corrected in the freetds backend, while two
minor bugs in the firebird backend were removed.

Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: rapp (Remote Applications) provides a UWG client for interacting
with a rapp server: the server sends XML descriptions of graphical
interfaces (widget hierarchies) that the client renders. Actions performed
on the client are sent back to the server (as XML), which updates the
interface as necessary.

Changes: This release updated the client-side implementation of the RAPP
protocol and included more support for pseudo properties and commands.

About: rappd (Remote Applications Daemon) provides the server side of
rapp, which manages application back-ends providing interfaces to rapp
clients. When connected, the server sends out XML descriptions of
graphical interfaces (widget hierarchies) which the client renders.
Actions on interfaces are communicated back to the server which then
updates the interface.

Changes: This release adds loadable module code and the start of a server
control module, various protocol and implementation updates, and support
for multi-client applications (example chat included).

Information Management :: Document Repositories

About: SiSU (Structured information, Serialized Units) is a command line
driven document creation and management framework. With minimal markup of
a plaintext file, it produces: plain-text, HTML, XHTML, XML, ODF
(OpenDocument), LaTeX, PDF, and populates an SQL database (PostgreSQL or
SQLite) at an object/paragraph level for "atomic searches". Prepare
documents using your text editor of choice, then use SiSU to generate the
desired output formats. Vim 7 provides syntax highlighting for SiSU
markup. (For earlier versions, a syntax highlighting file is provided).

  Fri, Aug 25th 2006 12:53

Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: SRESI is a smart bookmark manager. It currently sports both a
command-line and a PHP interface. It works with both the standard
hierarchical trees and the new and fashionable tagged bookmarks. It was
developed as a way to interface both representation systems. SRESI can use
Del.icio.us, Mozilla, Opera, and XBEL bookmarks, and handles a few more
exports besides. Directories and tags are used equivalently, and the final
hierarchies are inferred from actual tag use.

Changes: The portal accessible from the PHP interface now allows a
form-based contextual edition in which all known data fields are implicit
and pre-filled. There have been a smattering of minor optimizations and
cleanups. Form input is still not checked for safety, so this version is
not yet ready for exposure on public servers.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: view3dscene is a viewer for VRML 1.0, VRML 2.0 (aka VRML 97), and
3DS files. It supports viewing the scene in the "Examine" mode and walking
in the virtual world with features such as collision detection and gravity.
Rendering is done using OpenGL. A built-in ray-tracer allows the generation
of images with more effects (like shadows and mirrors) and conforming
precisely to the VRML 97 lighting specification. The program can also
convert files from 3DS format to VRML 1.0 and pretty-print VRML files.

Changes: VRML 2.0 support was added. The interface was improved with new
menu items to jump to any viewpoint defined in the file, to do some
editing operations on the scene, to view warnings reported about the
current scene, and to reopen the scene file. GIF textures can be loaded if
you have ImageMagick's convert program available in $PATH.

[071] - Web Form Factory 0.1.3
  by joel (http://freshmeat.net/users/joelwan/)
  Fri, Aug 25th 2006 01:33

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Code Generators

About: WFF is a simple application that binds HTML forms to a database. It
analyzes the HTML file you supply and identifies all the common input types
it contains, including text fields, drop down lists, checkboxes, radio
buttons, and text areas. Once all the input types have been detected, it
then performs some validation tests that ensures that enough information
is contained within the HTML form to allow the program to bind the inputs
properly. It then generates the required backend PHP code and returns the
form back to the you in a zip file.

Changes: Form Validation Capabilities were added. The user can easily
specify which fields are mandatory, and the location and appearance of
error messages can be configured. A new Tag engine was added. Tags can be
used to make form generation even simpler and faster by eliminating
repetitive form coding tasks.
