by unDEFER (http://freshmeat.net/users/undefer/)
Mon, Aug 28th 2006 10:31
System :: Filesystems
System :: Recovery Tools
About: anyfs-tools allows you to recover and convert filesystems while
using minimal extra disk space. Unlike other recovery tools, anyfs-tools
doesn't copy all the files found on other disks (or partitions), but only
saves information about the location of the file blocks to an external
inode table. After recovery, a user may mount the damaged filesystem with
anyfs and the external inode table and then interact with all recovered
files with any program.
Changes: A libany(3) manual page was added. In build_e2fs, support for
files larger than 2 Gb was added. In anyconvertfs, searching the mount
point of a device if relative path and device mounted are specified has
been fixed.

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: aria2 is a utility for downloading files. It has completely new
design concept from its predecessor, Aria, and is written from scratch.
aria2 has a segmented downloading engine in its core. It can download one
file from multiple URLs or multiple connections from one URL. This results
in very high speed downloading, much faster than ordinary browsers. This
engine in was implemented in a single-thread model. The architecture is
clean and easy to extend. aria2 currently supports HTTP, FTP, and
BitTorrent. It also supports Metalink version 3.0.
Changes: This release adds 2 command line options for quitting seeding
(time and share-ratio) and fixes a bug that caused assertion failure in
ares_strerror. The output filename is now URL-decoded.

Software Development :: Libraries
About: conexus is a generalized C++ I/O library that includes support for
IPv4 and IPv6 sockets, serial/TTY communications, and packet capture (via
pcap). It utilizes sigc++ for object communication. A companion library,
conexusmm, provides a set of gtkmm widgets.
Changes: This release changes a few, but fundamental, aspects of data
delivery. The CData class, which contained constant data, has now been
removed in favor of reimplementing the Data class with full encapsulation
and const methods. With this change, all data signals are emitted with
constant data references rather than distinct copies that can be created
with the clone() method.

[033] - Notalon 0.2.2
by Saketh (http://freshmeat.net/users/braingeyser/)
Mon, Aug 28th 2006 10:41
Education
About: Notalon is an application designed to make taking Cornell notes
faster. The purpose of Notalon is to remove the burden of format from the
user. It leaves the writing to the writer, and the dirty work to the
application. The target end users are students and others who wish to take
Cornell notes.
Changes: This is mainly a bugfix and code cleanup release. The consistent
appearance of "None" in the text window has been fixed, as well as several
Unicode bugs. Most of the significant changes occurred in PDF export:
Notalon now uses Reportlab tables to write to the PDF. This fixed several
major bugs in PDF export in previous versions. Users are urged to upgrade
to this release for proper PDF export.

System :: Archiving
About: NVnetbackup (Not Veritas netbackup) is a simple backup system
framework for data in an SMB/CIFS networked environment. It can also be
used for backing up local data. The primary focus of this system is the
simple selection of data to be backed up and the security of said data. It
is also very portable because it relies on common Linux tools and its
behavior is controlled entirely by a single and simple configuration file.
Changes: This release adds more documentation to the FAQ included in the
HELP file. This addresses the issues with NVnetbackup not being able to
backup files located on shares hosted on Windows machines that are locked
or in use. This release details the requirements for using Microsoft's
"Volume Shadow Service" in conjunction with NVnetbackup in order to get
around this.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: RabbIt is a mutating, caching Web proxy used to speed up surfing
over slow links like modems. It does this by removing advertising and

written in Java and should be able to run on any platform. It does depend
upon an image converter if image scaleing is on. The recommended image
converter is "convert" from the ImageMagick package.
Changes: A cache is used for the direct buffers and the buffers are

collection and less memory usage. Persistent Web connections that are

About: The SOPE package is an extensive set of frameworks (16 frameworks,

Mon, Aug 28th 2006 05:41
Security
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking
About: strongSwan is a complete IPsec and IKEv1 implementation for Linux
2.4 and 2.6 kernels. It interoperates with most other IPsec-based VPN
products. It is a descendant of the discontinued FreeS/WAN project. The
focus of the strongSwan project is on strong authentication mechanisms
using X.509 public key certificates and optional secure storage of private
keys on smartcards through a standardized PKCS#11 interface. A unique
feature is the use of X.509 attribute certificates to implement advanced
access control schemes based on group memberships.
Changes: Support was added for the ipsec route/unroute commands for IKEv2.
This allows IKE_SAs and CHILD_SAs to be set up on demand when traffic to be
tunnelled is detected by the kernel. Re-keying for IKE_SAs was added. As
specified in the IKEv2 RFC, no re-authentication is done, only new keys
are generated using perfect forward secrecy.

Mon, Aug 28th 2006 06:05
Internet
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
About: The Zero Install Injector makes it possible for users to install
software easily and without the need for root privileges. It takes the URL
of a program's interface description and chooses suitable versions of the
program and all of its dependencies (also identified by URLs) according to
the user's policy settings (eg. "stable", "testing", "minimal network use",
etc). The chosen versions are downloaded and cached and the program is run,
using environment variables to let it find the components.
Changes: A command to copy a download from an untrusted user (checking
that the digest is correct) has been added. This also allows sys-admins to
add user downloads to the shared cache safely. Non-ASCII characters in
interface files are now supported. If no version is available (e.g.
because none are cached and you're offline) then it now switches to
graphical mode automatically. Many error messages have been improved.
