Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Combean is a Java framework for combinatorial structures like
graphs or linear programs and optimization algorithms working with these
structures. The objective of Combean is to integrate existing proven
optimization packages as well as new implementations through a set of lean
Java interfaces. Using a JavaBeans-based configuration mechanism, solvers
for real-world optimization problems can be generated by plugging together
the best-performing components. Using Combean as "glue" between
optimization packages leads to more interoperable, adaptable, and flexible
solutions.

Changes: Combean is in a pre-alpha state. The code has been tested with a
quite comprehensive automatic test suite and is supposed to be rather
stable. The API may still be subject to heavy refactoring, and major
planned features (especially graph theoretic algorithms) are still
missing. However, the part of the software that deals with modelling of
linear programs is already quite mature.

Software Development :: Bug Tracking
Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Quality Assurance

About: cspot is a semantic annotator designed only for the C programming
language. It is quite similar to cscope, but some more functionality. It
can be used to find the declarations, definitions, and usages of
functions, variables, macros, typedefs, and structs. It can also find
visible identifiers at some position in the source, functions called by a
function, global variables used by a function, usages of local variable
declarations, unused global variables, unused function definitions, and
more. Because it uses sparse, cspot knows more about semantics than
cscope.

Changes: A bad regexp has been fixed. There is a new documentation page
(still under development).

[009] - Cypher 0.7.8
  by sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/sdmonroe/)
  Sun, Sep 3rd 2006 04:46

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Text Processing :: General
Text Processing :: Linguistic

About: Cypher generates the .rdf (RDF graph) and .serql (SeRQL query)
representation of a plain language input. With robust definition
languages, its grammar and lexicon can quickly and easily be extended to
process highly complex sentences and phrases of any natural language, and
can cover any vocabulary. Programmers can build next generation semantic
Web applications that harness natural language.

Changes: Change were made to the pattern element parser. Now either store
or root may be specified as an attribute to determine if a pattern will be
output. Setting to false prevents the pattern from being output if the
pattern is the root pattern.

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for rapidly developing search
engines on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It's
scalable, easy to create, and fast to search. It runs on any
JDBC-supported relational database. It can work on any new systems or old
legacy systems that need full-text search, without changing existing
systems. It's based on the high-performance Lucene API. All parameters are
configurable through Web UI for configuring data retrieval, content
indexing, and displaying templates.

Changes: An XML and JSON result template was added. Multiple range
searching is supported with "+" and "-". When index hot-switching, loading
the temporary index into memory is avoided. The UnStored type can be
searched now. Duplicated records are avoided when incremental indexing and
a scheduled job are recreating the index.

[017] - eXcavator 1.0.0 (Pear Package Distribution)
  by Myron Turner (http://freshmeat.net/users/turnermm03/)
  Sun, Sep 3rd 2006 23:47

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: eXcavator is an XML query processing class for PHP. Queries are
constructed using a small query language, and query results are returned
as either loosely formed or strict XML, in formats suitable for both text
and HTML. One of eXcavator's most useful features is its facility to
insert query results into user-defined templates, which allow for a free
interpolation of user text and the data extracted by the query. It runs on
top of XML_PullParser, but uses a completely independent API. However, it
does offer opportunities to use the facilities of both packages side by
side for programmers familiar with both.

Changes: This package is for use with the Pear Package Manager. It
contains only the eXcavator distribution, whereas the Default branch
contains XML_PullParser.

About: gscan2pdf is a GUI to ease the process of producing PDFs from
scanned documents. You scan one or several pages in with File/Scan, and
create a PDF of selected pages with File/Save PDF. At maturity, the GUI
will have similar features to that of the Windows Imaging program, but
with the express objective of writing a PDF, including metadata. Scanning
is handled with SANE via scanimage. PDF conversion is done by libtiff.
Perl is used for portability and ease of programming, with gtk2-perl for
the GUI. This should therefore work more or less out of the box on any
system with Perl, gtk2-perl, scanimage, and libtiff.

Changes: Renumbering can be done by editing the page number. The window is
destroyed after the PDF is written. Options are read from --help
--device-name=<dev>. Test mode. Custom paper sizes are hidden when not
needed.

About: Jiplet Container (Java SIP Servlet) is a servlet-like development
and runtime environment for SIP applications. The SIP protocol is widely
used for voice services over IP networks. This product enables developers
to create server-side SIP applications using a component-based model
similar to that envisioned by the J2EE architecture. The Jiplet container
runs as a standalone server as well as a JBOSS service.

Changes: The Jiplet Console (system administration user interface) has
been rewritten using the Google Web Toolkit (GWT). The console now
provides an easy to use interface taking full advantage of the rich user
interface that GWT provides. The directory structure of the project has
been refactored to divide the project into logical components with the
idea that each of these components can be treated as separate projects
that can be built independently. The automated tests for the project now
work fully. Several bugs that were found have been fixed.

  by bmeurer (http://freshmeat.net/users/bmeurer/)
  Sun, Sep 3rd 2006 09:06

Software Development :: Libraries

About: libexo is an extension library for Xfce. While Xfce ships with
quite a few libraries that are primarly targeted at desktop development,
libexo is targeted at application development, with a focus on
applications for Xfce. It contains several additional widgets (e.g. an

framework for editable toolbars, light-weight session management support,
functions to automatically synchronize object properties, and several
miscelleanous utility and helper functions useful for application
developers.

Changes: This release adds a new ExoIconChooserDialog widget to pick an
icon from either the current icon theme or an image file. It adds
exo_gtk_file_chooser_add_thumbnail_preview(), which adds a thumbnail
preview widget to a GtkFileChooser. It adds ExoCellRendererIcon as the
default icon renderer for the ExoIconView. ExoTreeView has been updated to
add support for rubberband selection. A layout problem in ExoIconView where
the appearance of a scrollbar caused the icons to be laid out again and
again has been fixed. The GSlice allocator is used where possible to
further reduce memory overhead.

[039] - Linux-VServer 2.02 (Linux 2.6 Stable)
  by Herbert Pötzl (http://freshmeat.net/users/bertl/)
  Sun, Sep 3rd 2006 22:55

Security
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Linux-VServer allows you to create virtual private servers and
security contexts which operate like a normal Linux server, but allow many
independent servers to be run simultaneously in one box at full speed. All
services, such as ssh, mail, Web, and databases, can be started on such a
VPS, without modification, just like on any real server. Each virtual
server has its own user account database and root password and doesn't
interfere with other virtual servers.

Changes: Kernel thread isolation was improved. I/O priority queues are per
guest now. Scheduler priority bias is now adjustable. JFS file attribute
support and bind mount extensions (BME) have been added. The debug system
and the kernel state helper were improved, and the VServer command
interface was extended accordingly. Various enhancements and fixes were
made for subsystems like ptrace, namespaces, capability system, locking,
mounts, and xid handling, as well as architecture specific fixes for
alpha, arm, ia64, mips, sparc, and x86_64 (mainly utsname, ptrace, and

[059] - QuickBuild 1.1
  by Robin Shine (http://freshmeat.net/users/robinshine/)
  Sun, Sep 3rd 2006 18:34

About: QuickBuild is a cross-platform build automation and management
server that helps with continuous integration or nightly builds. Besides
the ability to automate your builds, it puts extra emphasis on build
management so that your QA/release builds can be generated and managed in
a simple and efficient way. Configuration, monitoring, and access to build
artifacts are all done through an intuitive Web interface. Your development
and testing team will have a central area to access the build information.

Changes: This version is able to authenticate users through the LDAP
protocol. Various LDAP server are supported, including Microsoft Active
Directory. User group information in an LDAP server can be leveraged to
set user permission on the QuickBuild side. Another important change is
the enhancement of the build promotion feature. Besides the ability to
reproduce a build in another configuration with a new version, you can
promote artifacts of an existing build into a new build and optionally run
additional steps to process them. At the same time, the source code can be
re-labeled with the new version.

[064] - smrt 0.4.1
  by Pio (http://freshmeat.net/users/piough/)
  Sun, Sep 3rd 2006 13:31

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: smrt is a powerful python-based GUI and command line tool designed
to ease the process of constantly renaming and tagging MP3 and OGG files.
It performs the functions of a standard mass-tagger, such as translating a
filename into tags, and creating a new filename from tag data. It is unique
in its inclusion of powerful regular expression and custom text
manipulation tools to manipulate filenames and tag data, and in its
ability to search for and apply track data from the FreeDB project. All
this is presented in a streamlined, informative GTK GUI. A small CLI tool
is also provided for quick jobs.

Changes: DB "Guessing" has been removed (it didn't work very reliably).
The CD DB search tool can now add track data to the selection. A new "Text
Filter" section to apply regexes and commands. New in-application help
dialogs. A CLI rewrite. Database imports support new FreeDB 7zip files.
New save options. Bugfixes and much more.

[065] - Speech and Debate Timekeeper 2.0
  by Jemmy Chen (http://freshmeat.net/users/jemmyc/)
  Sun, Sep 3rd 2006 23:52

About: Speech and Debate Timekeeper is a multi-platform debate timer for
various debate formats and individual events. It has speech order and time
limits preprogrammed for Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, Parliamentary, Public
Forum, Karl Popper, and miscellaneous debate formats. It also tracks prep
time for both sides. All time limits are user adjustable. These timers give
visual and/or vocal time signals at user defined intervals. At the end of
each speech, cross-examination, or preparation, the timer automatically
sets itself to time the next thing that needs timing at the push of a
button.

Changes: On Mac OS X, Timekeeper.jar is executable by double-clicking on
it. The World Schools debate format was added. A help screen bug that
caused the program to freeze on handhelds with tall displays was fixed.
The name of the selected event is shown in the title bar for 3 seconds
before reverting to the name of the current task.

alternative to the GNOME terminal emulator, with all the bells and
whistles.

Changes: Parse file:-URIs are dropped to a Terminal window properly and
formatted so they can be used in shell commands directly. This release
uses the thumbnail preview support for the background image selection that
was added with exo 0.3.1.10rc1. '~' has been added to the default word
