Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
About: Amarok is a sound system-independent audio-player for Unix. Its
interface uses a powerful "browser" metaphor that allows you to create
playlists that make the most of your music collection.
Changes: This release offers much improved performance, especially with
big playlists. New features include Rendezvous (ZeroConf) support for the
music sharing client, and the new File Tracking feature, which makes it
possible to keep statistics intact when moving files. There are also many
important bugfixes, especially for the collection scanner.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing
System :: Archiving
About: cdrtools (formerly cdrecord) creates home-burned CDs/DVDs with a
CDR/CDRW/DVD recorder. It works as a burn engine for several applications.
It supports CD/DVD recorders from many different vendors; all SCSI-3/mmc-
and ATAPI/mmc-compliant drives should also work. Supported features
include IDE/ATAPI, parallel port, and SCSI drives, audio CDs, data CDs,
and mixed CDs, full multi-session support, CDRWs (rewritable), DVD-R/-RW,
DVD+R/+RW, TAO, DAO, RAW, and human-readable error messages. cdrtools
includes remote SCSI support and can access local or remote CD/DVD
writers.
Changes: GNU getopt_long was replaced by getargs() in mkisofs for more
bug-free, orthogonal, and POSIX-compliant option parsing. An Eltorito Boot
bug that happened together with ISO-9660:1999 was fixed. Many enhancements
were made in the Schily Makefilesystem. A few smaller bugs in cdda2wav
were fixed.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: CMS RSS Grabber is a system that grabs RSS feeds and fills the
content of a CMS system. In other words, CMS content syndication through
RSS. It is built in such a flexible way that it doesn't matter which CMS
system it connects to. Settings inside the script let you define how you
access the database.
Changes: An option to strip the http:// from the URL that is being
exported to CMS. Usage is [$url=nohttp$]. A CMS authors query is added to
CMS Settings. Selection of author that adds content can be inserted with
the [$authorid$] variable. Misc. variables for dates and time are added.
An installation script is added for easy install. Settings for WordPress
CMS are added. The ImportCMS() function didn't include the prefix to the
feeddata table, imports to Joomla gave double texts in articles and the
URLs had double http:// in them, and CMS update error messages were shown
before logging into the system. These issues have been fixed.

[008] - DOLFIN 0.6.2
by Dolfin Code Team (http://freshmeat.net/users/dolfin/)
Tue, Sep 5th 2006 14:17
Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: DOLFIN is the C++ interface of the FEniCS project for the
Automation of Computational Mathematical Modeling (ACMM), providing a
consistent PSE (Problem Solving Environment) for solving ordinary and
partial differential equations. Key features include a simple, consistent
and intuitive object-oriented API; automatic and efficient evaluation of
variational forms through FFC; automatic and efficient assembly of linear
systems; and support for general families of finite elements.
Changes: Much work has gone into this release to improve the linear
algebra, now supporting both uBlas and PETSc through a uniform interface,
the ODE solvers, and the user manual. In addition, support has been added
for integration over boundaries, thus adding support for Neumann boundary
conditions. The installation process has also been simplified, since
DOLFIN may now optionally be compiled without support for PETSc.

[009] - EditiX 5.0
by Alexandre Brillant (http://freshmeat.net/users/abrillant/)
Tue, Sep 5th 2006 09:15
Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)
Text Processing :: Markup :: DocBook
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
About: EditiX is a cross-platform and multi-purpose XML editor and XSLT
debugger (1.0 and 2.0), which helps Web authors and programmers use XML
and XML-related technologies, such as XSLT, FO, and XSD schemas. It
provides a lot of functionality within a refined IDE, which guides the
user with intelligent entry helpers, and has real-time XPath location and
syntax error detection. It allows the user to apply an XSLT or FO
transformation, and shows the result in a separate view. It includes
default templates for XML, DTD, XHTML, XSLT, XSD, XML RelaxNG, SVG,
MathML, and XML FO. It can generate schema W3C, DTD or RelaxNG from a
document instance.
Changes: This major release includes about 50 improvements divided in the
standard, XSLT, and schema editors. The error management has been
rewritten, and the content assistant supports various cases. For example,
it detects available types taking into account the current namespace with
W3C schema. You can build your XSLT document with simple drag'n'drop from
the data source to the XSLT editor. Each editor can be extracted, so you
can have several editors in the same space.

[011] - Enhanced TightVNC Viewer 1.0.2
by Karl Runge (http://freshmeat.net/users/runge/)
Tue, Sep 5th 2006 08:01
Desktop Environment :: Tools
About: The Enhanced TightVNC Viewer package is part of the x11vnc VNC
server project. It provides a native VNC viewer that takes advantage of
new features in x11vnc, e.g. cursor alpha blending and automatic SSL
tunnelling. Some features apply to any VNC server, e.g. automatic SSH
tunnelling. Another goal is to provide a package that conveniently bundles
everything needed for the user to have the enhanced viewer running quickly.
This includes pre-built binaries of the viewer and utility programs for
Windows and many Unix variants, and a GUI to configure and launch the
viewer.
Changes: This release adds automatic service tunnelings via SSH: CUPS and
SMB Printing (applications running on the remote VNC server can print on
your local printer), ESD/ARTSD Audio (remote sound applications can be
heard on the VNC viewer side), and SMB (Windows/Samba) filesystem mounting
(you can mount your local shares on the remote VNC server).

[013] - Exaile 0.2
by Adam Olsen (http://freshmeat.net/users/synic/)
Tue, Sep 5th 2006 08:15
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
About: Exaile is a media player aiming to be similar to KDE's AmaroK, but
for GTK+. It incorporates many of the features from AmaroK (and other
media players) like automatic fetching of album art, handling of large
libraries, lyrics fetching, artist/album information via the wikipedia,
last.fm support, and optional iPod support (assuming you have python-gpod
installed). In addition, it includes a built in shoutcast directory
browser, tabbed playlists (so you can have more than one playlist open at
a time), blacklisting of tracks (so they don't get scanned into your
library), downloading of guitar tablature from fretplay.com, and
submitting played tracks on your iPod to last.fm.

[014] - eXcavator 1.0.1
by Myron Turner (http://freshmeat.net/users/turnermm03/)
Tue, Sep 5th 2006 00:02
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: eXcavator is an XML query processing class for PHP. Queries are
constructed using a small query language, and query results are returned
as either loosely formed or strict XML, in formats suitable for both text
and HTML. One of eXcavator's most useful features is its facility to
insert query results into user-defined templates, which allow for a free
interpolation of user text and the data extracted by the query. It runs on
top of XML_PullParser, but uses a completely independent API. However, it
does offer opportunities to use the facilities of both packages side by
side for programmers familiar with both.
Changes: This version upgraded the query language, making it possible to
navigate lists of descendants when locating data by placing a list to the
left of the arrow operator, as in 'vehicle[[owner/address/city => CDATA =
Winnipeg]]'. Previously, only one descendent was enabled, e.g. [[city =>
CDATA = Winnipeg]], making it more difficult to narrow a search. The
latter, for example, might return both 'owner/address/city' and
'dealer/address/city'. Despite this expression's hierarchical appearance,
general looseness of syntax still remains, i.e. 'vehicle[[owner/city =>
CDATA = Winnipeg]]' could also work.

[016] - Filelight 1.0
by Max Howell (http://freshmeat.net/users/MxCl/)
Tue, Sep 5th 2006 06:22
System :: Filesystems
Utilities
About: Filelight graphically represents a file system as a set of
concentric segmented rings (or nested piecharts), aiming to show where
disk space is being used. Segments expand from the center, representing
files and directories. The size of segments is proportional to the size of
the files they represent. Directories have child segments which represent
the files they contain. Filelight performs a similar function to the
command line tool du, but all the information is shown in a compact
graphical fashion.
Changes: Fixes were made for compilation, the build system, l10n, crashes,
memory leaks, and look n' feel. A summary screen was added, showing usage
information for currently mounted partitions. Full KIO support was added,
allowing you to browse non-local file systems. A KPart was added, allowing
other applications to use Filelight, notably Konqueror.

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Multimedia :: Graphics
About: Gnofract 4D is a Gnome-based program to draw fractals. What sets it
apart from other fractal programs (and makes it "4D") is the way that it
treats the Mandelbrot and Julia sets as different views of the same
four-dimensional fractal object. It contains a Fractint-compatible formula
compiler, allowing it to draw an unlimited number of fractal types, using
numerous coloring options.
Changes: This release adds an experimental feature for creating
animations, a method for coloring different regions of the fractal using
the 'fate' of a point, and some new formulas. It also fixes a number of
important bugs, including one that broke saving compressed files on older
Python versions.

by IBM ICU Team (http://freshmeat.net/users/strcpy/)
Tue, Sep 5th 2006 22:36
Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing
Text Processing :: General
About: ICU provides a Unicode implementation, with functions for
formatting numbers, dates, times, and currencies (according to locale
conventions, transliteration, and parsing text in those formats). It
provides flexible patterns for formatting messages, where the pattern
determines the order of the variable parts of the messages, and the format
for each of those variables. These patterns can be stored in resource files
for translation to different languages. Included are more than 100 codepage
converters for interaction with non-unicode systems.
Changes: This is a major release, with new features, new APIs, and many
bugfixes in data and code. ICU uses and supports Unicode 5.0, which is the
latest major release of Unicode. CU uses and supports data from Common
Locale Data Repository (CLDR) 1.4, which includes many improvements in
quality and quantity of data. A charset detection framework was added,
which provides heuristics for detecting the charset for unlabeled
sequences of bytes. Other performance and feature enhancements were added.

[029] - JSP Prize Tags 3.0.0
by Jakob Jenkov (http://freshmeat.net/users/jjenkov/)
Tue, Sep 5th 2006 00:24
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: JSP Prize Tags is a JSP tag library. The primary tags are the Tree
Tag, Tabbed Pane Tag, and AJAX Tags. The Tree Tag makes it easy to
implement tree controls in your JSP pages. The Tabbed Pane Tag makes it
easy to implement tabbed panes in your JSP pages. You can put any JSP code
inside a tab, and even include other JSPs inside a tab. The AJAX Tags make
it easy to turn your links and forms into AJAX links and forms, which
reload in a table cell or div tag instead of the whole page. Also included
are the icon tag, the alternate tag (for alternating content on the page,
such as the background color of table rows or an ad rotator), laying
calendar events in a table, and more.
Changes: This stable release adds a simple Ajax Tag-lib, which makes it
easy to use Ajax in your Web applications. It also adds an ITreeDao
interface that makes it much easier to create dynamic trees with the Tree
Tag. By implementing this two-method interface and setting an instance of
the implementation on the ITree instance, the tree will be able to build
itself dynamically.

by modifying a template and a related CSS file. The format in which the
date is returned, the default date and time period, and the first day of
the week can be selected.
Changes: The datePicker now pops up as a modal window (it will stay on top
of other windows until closed) and will also have the focus by default. The
possibility was added to define the abbreviations for names of months and
days for each language. The manual was clarified regarding how to use

Tue, Sep 5th 2006 08:17
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Information Management
Office/Business :: Financial :: Accounting
About: QOF (Query Object Framework), provides a set of C Language
utilities for performing generic structured complex queries on a set of
data held by a set of C/C++ objects. This framework is unique in that it
does not require SQL or any database at all to perform the query. Thus, it
allows programmers to add query support to their applications without
having to hook into an SQL database.
Changes: The SQLite backend for embedded systems is now working and, along
with the QSF XML backend, can be packaged separately from the main library
as long as one backend is always available. The transition from
gnc-numeric to QofNumeric is complete. QofDate and QofTime were fixed to
avoid using GDate except in explicit conversions (which prevents build
failures on hppa and sparc). The QSF valgrind patch was fixed to avoid a

[058] - Rats! 1.9.0
by Robert Grimm (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgrimmm/)
Tue, Sep 5th 2006 08:13
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
About: Rats! is a parser generator for C-like languages (though currently
it only generates parsers in Java). It has been designed so that grammars
are concise and easily extensible. To this end, grammars are organized
into modules that can be easily changed by adding, removing, or modifying
alternatives in individual productions and composed with each other
through module parameters. Furthermore, it relies on ordered choices to
avoid ambiguities, supports syntactic predicates for unlimited lookahead,
and integrates lexing with parsing. Finally, it has extensive support for
automatically generating abstract syntax trees, thus greatly reducing the
need for explicit semantic actions.
Changes: This release adds a type checker for the C language, thus
completing the program's own front-end for C. It also features a more
uniform and flexible interface to abstract syntax tree nodes and more
comprehensive error checking of grammars.

[059] - rdup 0.2.15
by Miek Gieben (http://freshmeat.net/users/miek/)
Tue, Sep 5th 2006 14:12
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: rdup is a utility inspired by rsync and the Plan9 way of doing
backups. rdup itself does not backup anything; it only prints a list of
the names of files that have changed since the last backup. It also
handles files that are removed, allowing for correct incremental backups.
Auxilary scripts are needed to act on this list and implement the backup

Documentation
Software Development :: Documentation
About: ROBODoc is an API documentation tool. It extracts
specially-formated comment headers from a source file and puts them in a
separate file. ROBODoc allows you to include the program documentation in
the source code and avoid having to maintain two separate documents.
ROBODoc can format the documentation in HTML, LaTeX, RTF, XML DocBook, or
ASCII format. It is even possible to include parts of the source code. It
works with Assembler, C, C++, Java, Perl, LISP, Occam, Tcl/Tk, Pascal,
Fortran, shell scripts, HTML, and COBOL; basically any language that
supports comments.
Changes: Most of the formatting of the generated HTML documentation is now
done through a CSS file. The navigability has been greatly improved.

[061] - SDCC 2.6.0
by Tim Riemann (http://freshmeat.net/users/Octoate/)
Tue, Sep 5th 2006 04:00
Software Development :: Compilers
About: SDCC is a freeware, retargettable, optimizing ANSI-C compiler. The
current version targets Intel 8051-based MCUs, the Zilog Z80, and the
DS390. Targets for the Microchip PIC and Amtel AVR series are under
development, and the compiler can be retargeted for other 8 bit MCUs or
PICs. The entire source code for the compiler is distributed under GPL.
SDCC uses ASXXXX and ASLINK, a freeware, retargettable assembler & linker.
SDCC has extensive MCU (8051)-specific language extensions, which lets it
utilize the underlying hardware effectively. It includes a source-level
debugger/simulator and can generate debug info for the NoICE debugger.
Changes: This release improves the compiler's conformance to the C
standard. Significant progress was also made on the PIC (both 14- and
16-bit) backends. For the 8051, SDCC has seen the addition of a new memory
model, code banking, and bit variables. Numerous feature requests and
bugfixes are included as well.

[078] - Virtualmin 3.21
by Jamie Cameron (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcameron/)
Tue, Sep 5th 2006 22:49
System :: Systems Administration
About: Virtualmin is a Webmin module that simplifies the process of
setting up and managing virtual servers. It can create Apache virtual
hosts, BIND DNS domains, MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, and set up
Sendmail or Postfix to accept email for a domain. It can also manage
mailboxes and mail aliases within a domain.
Changes: Nicer units are used when mentioning quota in email messages to
domain owners and mailboxes (using the $QUOTA variable). Domain owners can
now perform backups to the virtualmin-backup directory under their home.
When adding a DNS zone inside a view that uses an include statement, the
included file will be used if it is specified in the BIND module
configuration. A Module Config option was added to compress backups using
the bzip2 format, which is more efficient.

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: VRaptor 2 is a Web-based MVC and IOC framework based on many
frameworks and ideas (Seam, Stripes, Webwork, Hibernate Annotations, etc).
It makes full use of Java 5 Annotations. It favors convention over
configuration, because configuration in XML/properties/annotations is
always easy to make mistakes and repetitive (aka copy and paste in many
places). This framework uses a more imperative approach, instead of having
many XML files to configure lifecycle and other properties. Most of the
settings go inside plain Java objects (POJO), so the team knows exactly
what is going on and where.
Changes: The Web application was translated to German and Portuguese. A
few bugs were corrected. New documentation on validation messages can be
found in the corresponding tutorial. 404 errors are correctly handled. A
new example on how to internationalize your application was created. A few
new converters and reports were added.

based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.
Changes: Two new targets were added: "xins eclipse", which will create the
Eclipse project files, and "xins maven", which will create the pom.xml file
for the API. It's now possible to share types between APIs. A manual of the
XINS Front-end Framework has been added. This release also contains a few
