Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering
About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: Image and contour transposition conventions for matrices were
standardized; resolution arguments were removed from the matrix contour
routines. The bounding box is correctly calculated for square pen caps. A
bug in drawline was fixed. An up argument was added to the projection
routines to specify the camera orientation. The definition and
documentation of cone was fixed; surface function signatures were
consolidated. Interactive auto-completion was added. Page scrolling was
implemented. Support for Adobe Reader annotations was added. The Emacs
asy-mode.el was improved. A FAQ was added.

[010] - Citadel 6.84
by Art Cancro (http://freshmeat.net/users/ajc/)
Wed, Sep 6th 2006 07:02
Communications :: BBS
Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Email
About: Citadel is an advanced messaging and collaboration system for
groupware and BBS applications. Users can connect to Citadel using any
telnet, WWW, or client software. Among the features supported are public
and private message bases (rooms), electronic mail, real-time chat,
paging, shared calendaring, address books, mailing lists, and more. Unlike
other collaboration servers, Citadel provides its own data stores and is
therefore extremely easy to install; you don't have to "bring your own"
email and database because they're built in. The server is multithreaded
and scalable. In addition, SMTP, IMAP, and POP3 servers are built-in for
easy connection to Internet mail. Citadel is both robust and mature; it
has been in production since 1987.
Changes: The software now supports Postfix TCP dictionary lookup when used
in combination with Postfix (but it's still not required). IMAP move/delete
operations are now much faster. This version of the server will be required
in order to run the upcoming 6.84 release of WebCit, the AJAX-powered front
end to Citadel.

[011] - Conary 1.0.30
by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Wed, Sep 6th 2006 09:40
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: This release orders updates and merges configuration files based
on paths, which means that files can move between arbitrary troves rather
than only within a package. This makes updates more robust, particularly
when moving from one branch to another. Many common operations are
significantly faster, and some also use less memory. Threaded updates have
been modified to avoid hiding error conditions. On the packaging site, the
clone operation has been refined, and the merge and update operations are
more verbose.

[012] - DB Solo 2.0.0 Final
by DB Solo (http://freshmeat.net/users/mhantula/)
Wed, Sep 6th 2006 05:19
Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Systems Administration
About: DB Solo is a powerful database development and management tool for
developers and DBAs. It has an intuitive user interface that allows you to
explore and manage your database objects as well as execute ad-hoc queries.
It supports Oracle, MySQL, Sybase, DB2, Solid, PostgreSQL, and MS SQL
Server. In addition to viewing and managing objects such as schemas,
tables, indexes, views, tablespaces, users, roles, sessions, and stored
procedures, you can view, edit, print, and export data from tables or the
results of queries. You can also graphically view foreign key
relationships.
Changes: A J2EE code generator was added, which can create EJB 3.0, JDBC,
and JUnit code from an existing schema. Support for SQL Server 2005,
Sybase 15, Solid 4.5, and Intel-based Macs was added. Explain plan is now
supported for DB2 as well.

Communications :: File Sharing :: Direct Connect
About: DConnect Daemon is a daemon that acts as a Direct Connect hub. It
is written in pure C and utilizes threads. It aims to be very fast, with a
very good protocol implementation.
Changes: Aside from bugfixes, this release adds the new option
allow_non_us_ascii_nicks. This should be used very carefully, because some

[015] - ExactImage 0.2.1
by René Rebe (http://freshmeat.net/users/ReneRebe/)
Wed, Sep 6th 2006 06:32
Multimedia :: Graphics
About: ExactImage is a fast C++ image processing library. Unlike
ImageMagick, it allows operation in several color spaces and bit depths
natively, resulting in much lower memory and computational requirements.
Some optimized algorithms operate in 1/20 of the time ImageMagick
requires, and displaying large images can be as fast as 1/10 of the time
the "display" program takes.
Changes: The empty page detection and b/w optimization algorithms where
moved out of single programs into the core library. The image scalers have
been fixed to correctly allocate the new image memory. Many more functions
are now exported via SWIG to scripting languages. Barcode recognition
through an external, commercial library is now supported.

Wed, Sep 6th 2006 07:15
Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Utilities
About: kArchiver is a KDE utility made to ease working with compressed
files. With kArchiver, you can create tar.gz, tar.bz2, .zip, and other
files, and you can add, remove, or view one or more files with a
multiselection window. Its interface merges with konqueror, allowing you
to view and extract all of your archives within the file manager.
Right-clicking on an archive allows you to extract archives in background.
You can also convert files between .tar.gz and .tar.bz2. It also provides
an automatic splitter/unsplitter to fit a file onto a set of floppies, and
wizards that will help you step by step to compile and install software
through kArchiver's interface. It can act as a command line tool, useful
for creating and extracting archives without taking care of the
compressor's name and its options.
Changes: This version introduces support for .sit and .hqx archives. The
"First Installation" wizard has been improved and now allows one to
directly download the missing compressors. Some other minor bugs were
fixed.

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
About: kds (krico's distributed storage) is a distributed storage system.
Its main goal is to work as a session handler for PHP. This package
provides four components: a daemon (kdsd), a command-line cilent (kdsc), a
library (libkds), and a PHP session handler extension. kdsd is a daemon
that uses worker threads to process KDSPROTO requests. It then retreives
or stores data in a BerkeleyDB storage. A nice little curses program is
also supplied to monitor the storage state.
Changes: A stress/benchmark utility was written and tests were run, which
resulted in fixed bugs in several BDB deadlock detection code points. A
lot of performance tuning is now possible at compile time. The
non-reentrant gethostbyname was replaced by gethostbyname_r to keep the
kdsenv library thread-safe. The job queue is now monitored and can be
printed to the log. A DB_CONFIG that triples performance is provided as a
sample. The curses tool kdsdstat has new options. The main achievement is
a stable daemon that responds to over 380 requests per second.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Software Development :: Libraries
About: libextractor is a library used to extract meta-data from files of
arbitrary type. It is designed to use helper-libraries to perform the
actual extraction, and to be trivially extendable by linking against
external extractors for additional file types. The goal is to provide
developers of file-sharing networks, file managers, and WWW-indexing bots
with a universal library to obtain meta-data about files. It includes a
shell-command and bindings for Java (JNI) and Python.

About: Tellico is a collection manager for KDE. It includes default
collections for books, bibliographies, comic books, videos, music, video
games, coins, stamps, trading cards, and wines, and also allows custom
collections. Unlimited user-defined fields are allowed. Filters are

customization for printing is possible through editing the default XSLT
file. It can import CSV, Bibtex, Bibtexml, RIS, MODS, CDDB, and audio file
metadata and exports CSV, HTML, Bibtex, Bibtexml, ONIX, and PilotDB.
Entries may be imported directly from Amazon.com, imdb.com, any z39.50
bibliographic server, PubMed, or an external script.
Changes: The debug block in CDDB import that read everything as Pink Floyd
was fixed. The image cache performance was improved, with another memory
leak fixed. A rendering bug with the image gradients in the entry
templates was fixed, and the auto-completion should now work in the filter
dialog. The CDDB cache is now read as UTF-8, and the BibTeX exporter adds
braces or quotes to \url{} values.
