[001] - Aranea framework 1.0-RC3
by Taimo (http://freshmeat.net/users/taimo/)
Tue, Sep 12th 2006 01:04
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: Aranea is a hierarchical Model-View-Controller Web framework that
provides a common, simple approach to building Web application components,
reusing custom or general GUI logic, and extending the framework. The
framework enforces programming using object oriented techniques with POJOs
and provides a JSP tag library that facilitates the programming of Web GUIs
without writing HTML. In addition to being a full-fledged Web framework in
its own right, it provides a powerful and simple component system that
allows the framework to be tailored by configuring the reusable modules
and adding modules only for the missing features.
Changes: FormElement Constraints have new internals. Some minor
documentation updates were made.

About: Browsershots is a system for automatically capturing screenshots of
Web pages in a variety of browsers and making these images available to the
public. Its goal is to make it easier to test the compatibility of Web
pages with a variety of browsers. The system distributes the work of
making screenshots among community members. Anyone can add URLs to the job
queue on a central server.
Changes: The new screenshot factory was ported to Windows and Mac OS, and
HTTP proxy support and a load limit were added. On the server, a page with
browser info for each screenshot was created, and a page for each factory
with a list of browsers. Duplicate screenshot requests are ignored, and
the submit page now shows only browsers that are currently available on
active factories. The blog was moved from Snurf to Trac.

System :: Logging
About: Logback is intended as a successor to the popular log4j project,
and was designed by log4j's founder, Ceki Gulcu. The basic architecture is
sufficiently generic so as to apply under different circumstances. It is
divided into three modules. The Core module lays the groundwork for the
other two modules, whereas the Classic module can be assimilated to an
improved version of log4j. It natively implements the SLF4J API so that
you can readily switch back and forth between logback and other logging
systems, such as log4j or JDK14 Logging. The Access module integrates with
Servlet containers to provide HTTP access log functionality. You can easily
build your own modules on top of the Core module.
Changes: This release offers several new Appenders, support for Mapped
Diagnostic Context, and improved tests and documentation. A bug affecting
parametrized logging was fixed. A PropertiesTranslator webapp that
converts log4j.properties files to joran configuration files (in XML
format) was released.

[038] - PHP Sessions Management Class 1.0.1
by Stefan Gabos (http://freshmeat.net/users/stefangabos/)
Tue, Sep 12th 2006 01:05
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: PHP Sessions Management Class implements a new PHP session handler
that can replace the default PHP session handler by storing session data
in a MySQL database table. The session handler works just by creating an
object of this class. After that, applications just need to use the same
code to store and retrieve session variables.
Changes: In the 'session_data' table, the 'session_id' field is now a
primary key and its type was changed from varchar(255) to varchar(32).
Previously, a whole table scan was performed every time a session was
loaded. A new "stop()" method that unsets a session's variables and
deletes it from the database was added due to the fact that some people
were using the private "destroy" method, which is not for this purpose.
You can now override the default settings of the session.gc_maxlifetime,
session.gc_probability, and session.gc_divisor configuration options. An
example file was added.

[039] - Port Scan Attack Detector 1.4.7
by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
Tue, Sep 12th 2006 09:35
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: The Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a collection of three
system daemons that are designed to work with the Linux Netfilter
firewalling code to detect port scans and other suspect traffic. It
features a set of highly configurable danger thresholds (with sensible
defaults), verbose alert messages, email alerting, DShield reporting, and
automatic blocking of offending IP addresses. Psad incorporates many of
the packet signatures included in Snort to detect various kinds of
suspicious scans, and implements the same passive OS fingerprinting
algorithm used by p0f.
Changes: IPTables::ChainMgr has been completely reworked to support the
return of iptables error messages that are collected via stderr. The
ability has been added to specify the position for both the jump rule into
the psad chains as well as the position for new rules within the psad
chains via the -I argument to iptables. The _debug option in the
IPTables::ChainMgr module has been populated, and a _verbose option has
been added so that the specific iptables commands can actually be seen as
IPTables::ChainMgr functions are called. There is a bugfix for an
incorrect config variable name that gated Netfilter prerequisite checks.

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
About: With a small codebase, the PowerDNS Recursor is an advanced
recursor currently serving the DNS resolving needs of over 2 million
Internet connections. Besides high performance (using kqueue or epoll,
over 15 thousand qps on commodity hardware), it provides advanced
anti-spoofing measures. In addition, the program caches server performance
and timeouts, making it both network and user friendly. It also has
built-in hooks for making graphs with rrdtool, providing insight into
nameserver performance.
Changes: This release, which powers over 40 million Internet connections,
consists mostly of minor bugfixes, except on 64-bit platforms, where
stability should be very much improved. Additionally, some small speedups
ought to be noticeable.

Software Development :: Compilers
About: Rats! is a parser generator for C-like languages (though currently
it only generates parsers in Java). It has been designed so that grammars
are concise and easily extensible. To this end, grammars are organized
into modules that can be easily changed by adding, removing, or modifying
alternatives in individual productions and composed with each other
through module parameters. Furthermore, it relies on ordered choices to
avoid ambiguities, supports syntactic predicates for unlimited lookahead,
and integrates lexing with parsing. Finally, it has extensive support for
automatically generating abstract syntax trees, thus greatly reducing the
need for explicit semantic actions.

About: TreeLine is used to organize and store text data in a tree
structure. It is well suited to keeping track of many different types of
information. Each node of the tree can contain several defined fields,
forming a mini-database. The format of each node can be defined, and the
output can be shown on the screen, printed, or exported to HTML. The tree
