[001] - Active port forwarder 0.8.2
by jeremian (http://freshmeat.net/users/jeremian/)
Mon, Sep 18th 2006 05:13
System :: Networking
About: Active port forwarder uses SSL for secure packet tunneling. It is
designed for people without an external IP who want to make some services
available on the Internet. afserver is placed on the machine with a
publicly accessible address, and afclient is placed on the machine behind
a firewall or masquerade. This makes the second machine visible to the
Internet. Running afserver does not require root priviledges, nor does it
use other processes. Zlib is used to compress the transferred data.
Changes: The bug in resource deallocation for "remote admin" clients has
been fixed.

[002] - Alice ML 1.3
by Guido Tack (http://freshmeat.net/users/odiug/)
Mon, Sep 18th 2006 05:06
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Alice ML is a functional programming language that enriches the
statically typed, closed functional world of ML with extensive support for
type-safe programming of concurrent, distributed, and open systems. It also
features cutting-edge constraint programming technology in the tradition of
Oz/ Mozart. Alice ML is a mostly conservative extension of Standard ML.
Changes: Alice now incorporates some of the proposed extensions for
Successor ML. The bytecode jitter is now the default execution unit. The
documentation includes a constraint programming tutorial, and the
constraint library now uses the current stable version of Gecode.

Mon, Sep 18th 2006 04:52
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
About: The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture is composed of several parts.
The first is a fully modularized sound driver which supports module
autoloading, devfs, isapnp autoconfiguration, and gives complete access to
analog audio, digital audio, control, mixer, synthesizer, DSP, MIDI, and
timer components of audio hardware. It also includes a fully-featured
kernel-level sequencer, a full compatibility layer for OSS/Free
applications, an object-oriented C library which covers and enhances the
ALSA kernel driver functionality for applications (client/server, plugins,
PCM sharing/multiplexing, PCM metering, etc.), an interactive configuration
program for the driver, and some simple utilities for basic management.
Changes: The detection of CONFIG_I2C_POWERMAC and of CONFIG_VIDEO_V4L1 was
fixed. dB scale information was added to various drivers. The HDA driver,
the SPARC DBRI driver, and TLV support were improved. Support for
non-standard rates was added to the USB audio driver. Many fixes were
made.

[004] - Apache Ant 1.7.0Beta2 (Development)
by Antoine Levy-Lambert (http://freshmeat.net/users/AntoineLL/)
Mon, Sep 18th 2006 07:34
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: Ant is a Java based build tool, similar to make, but with better
support for the cross platform issues involved with developing Java
applications. Ant is the build tool of choice for all Java projects at
Apache and many other Open Source Java projects.
Changes: This version contains some bugfixes and improvements compared to
1.7.0Beta1, particularly concerning the script task. Ant 1.7 introduces a
resource framework. Some of the core ant tasks such as <:copy/>: are
now able to process not only file system resources but also zip entries,
tar entries, and paths. Resource collections group resources, and can be
further combined with operators such as union and intersection. This can
be extended by custom resources and custom tasks using resources. Ant 1.7
starts outsourcing of optional tasks to Antlibs, such as .NET, svn, and
antunit.

[005] - appctl 1.6
by Rainer Meier (http://freshmeat.net/users/skybeam/)
Mon, Sep 18th 2006 14:07
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Software Distribution
Utilities
About: Appctl is a framework for virtually any server software. It
provides a central script called "ctl" which allows you to start, stop,
restart, maintain, or query the current status of an application. It is
meant as a completely generic replacement for application-specific
startup/stop scripts. The project also supplies generic monitoring scripts
for clusters, which can dramatically decrease clustering costs.
Changes: This update addresses a bug where ctl showed a non-running
handler when the PID of ctl itself at execution time was a subset of the
handler PID. For example, if the handler uses PID "4567" and ctl is
executed on PID "456". This is very unlikely to happen, and only happens
in PIDless mode where no PID files are used.

Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: Arabica is a C++ XML parser toolkit that has a full SAX2
implementation (the Simple API for XML), including the optional interfaces
and helper classes. It also implements the W3C DOM (Document Object Model)
Level 2.0 Core, together with XPath 1.0. It delivers UTF-8 encoded
std::strings or UCS-2 std::wstrings, but can also accommodate custom
string types and alternative encodings. It provides uniform SAX2 wrappers
for the expat parser, Xerces, libxml, and the Microsoft XML parser COM
component.
Changes: Incremental improvements to the build system. Most significantly,
it is now possible to configure the build without the Boost library, in
which case those components that need Boost are skipped.

Software Development :: Quality Assurance
About: ckjm calculates Chidamber and Kemerer object-oriented metrics by
processing the bytecode of compiled Java files. For each class given, the
program calculates the following six metrics proposed by Chidamber and
Kemerer: WMC, weighted methods per class; DIT, depth of inheritance tree;
NOC, number of children; CBO, coupling between object classes; RFC,
response for a class; and LCOM, lack of cohesion in methods. In addition,
ckjm also calculates each class's afferent couplings (Ca) and its number
of public methods (NPM).

About: DB Visual Architect for Eclipse (DBVA-EC) is a full-featured
Object Relational Mapping (ORM) plugin for Eclipse that provides
round-trip code engineering support with Java. The tool acts as a bridge
between object model, data model, and relational model by automating the
mapping between relational rows in a database and object models which can
be manipulated by a Java program.
Changes: "New Diagram" and "New Model" dialogs were introduced to enhance
diagram and model creation. A duplicate relationship reuses all values
within a relationship specification. All diagrams support a Package
Header, which is a package to hold models within a diagram. Database view
support includes reverse engineer views from the database and the ability
to generate code for querying views. Detection of project modification
state and view settings was enhanced in the Teamwork Client. The
presentation option for ERD was enhanced. Ingres database support was
added. Mac support was enhanced.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: Decimail Webmail 3 is an email application written in Javascript.
It is almost entirely client-side, and so has the potential for a rich and
responsive user-interface. The server-side requirement is a Web server, a
simple IMAP-to-HTTP proxy, and any IMAP server; this should result in
lower server load than some CGI Webmail applications. The code is still
relatively new and is not yet suited to widespread deployment.
Changes: This version adds sliders that allow you to adjust the sizes of
the various elements of the display. It also improves support for
quoted-printable and base64 encodings in incoming and outgoing messages,
and can send keep-alive NO-OPs to IMAP servers that need them.

About: The Enhanced TightVNC Viewer package is part of the x11vnc VNC
server project. It provides a native VNC viewer that takes advantage of
new features in x11vnc, e.g. cursor alpha blending and automatic SSL
tunnelling. Some features apply to any VNC server, e.g. automatic SSH
tunnelling. Another goal is to provide a package that conveniently bundles
everything needed for the user to have the enhanced viewer running quickly.
This includes pre-built binaries of the viewer and utility programs for
Windows and many Unix variants, and a GUI to configure and launch the
viewer.
Changes: This release enables creating SSL certificates and private keys
via the GUI. External certificates can also be imported. Port knocking may
now be done when the VNC or SSH connection finishes; this allows for
closing firewall ports.

[033] - fwknop 0.9.8
by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
Mon, Sep 18th 2006 07:30
Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: fwknop implements an authorization scheme that requires only a
single encrypted packet to communicate various pieces of information,
including desired access through a Netfilter policy and/or specific
commands to execute on the target system. The main application of this
program is to protect services such as SSH with an additional layer of
security in order to make the exploitation of vulnerabilities much more
difficult. The authorization server works by passively monitoring
authorization packets via libpcap.
Changes: The ability to ignore SPA packets after a configurable amount of
time was added (see the ENABLE_SPA_PACKET_AGING and MAX_SPA_PACKET_AGE
variables in fwknop.conf). This thwarts a (relatively difficult) MTIM
attack where an SPA packet is not forwarded to the destination server
until a later time when an attacker can attempt to take advantage of it.
The --gpg-default-key option was added to have fwknop use the default
GnuPG key that is defined in the ~/.gnupg/options file. The --URL command
line argument was added so that a URL other than the default
http://www.whatismyip.com/ can be provided for NAT addresses.

[060] - prbeditor 0.9.6
by eduardj (http://freshmeat.net/users/eduardj/)
Mon, Sep 18th 2006 04:27
Text Processing :: Linguistic
About: prbeditor is an editor for Java property resource bundle files. The
application's intent is to help in the localization (l10n) of those
programs that have been internationalized with Java's standard i18n
mechanism. In contrast to other similar tools, it shows the keys and
values of several languages at the same time in a spreadsheet, giving a
global view of the resource files. The tool relies on the application of
regular expresions to organize the keys and filter the visibility of the
files. It includes a spell checker for several languages, based on word
lists which may be downloaded separately.
Changes: Conversion of HTML special chars into HTML codes was added. A new
left-sided file-system view was added for fast-opening of property files.
Row icons were added to indicate which keys are selected for spell
checking and HTML character conversion. Several bugs were fixed.

Religion
About: qSong is a song database program with multimedia features for
worship musicians and other people working with music. It allows you to
store and manage all song-related information, such as chords, lyrics,
authors, and copyright. It can create songbooks in popular formats such as
PDF, HTML, and ChordPro. All items in the database can be searched and
sorted.
Changes: This is the first release candidate release, and the database
schema should not change very much beyond this point. A new mode was added
for inserting chords with single key presses. The confusing Original Song
title field was removed. A full screen mode for song display was added.
The song edit form was made nicer. Resizing of the song edit widget was
fixed. Song insertion was fixed.

System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: rdup is a utility inspired by rsync and the Plan9 way of doing
backups. rdup itself does not backup anything; it only prints a list of
the names of files that have changed since the last backup. It also
handles files that are removed, allowing for correct incremental backups.
Auxilary scripts are needed to act on this list and implement the backup
strategy. This way rdup can be kept lean and mean.
Changes: Perl utilities are now used by default. A Perl version of
crypt.sh was added. These scripts are up to 50 times faster than the shell
scripts.

About: recordMyDesktop is a program that captures audio and video data
from a Linux desktop session, producing an Ogg-encapsulated Theora-Vorbis
file. The main goal is to be as unobstrusive as possible by proccessing
only regions of the screen that have changed.
Changes: In this version, there is support for drawing the real cursor
through the Xfixes extension. Behavior on lack of any Xserver extension or
failure to open the sound card has changed. The program now exits, instead
of continuing with a different configuration. In this case, the exit
status indicates the nature of any error that occurred. There are also
other minor changes (documentation and program defaults).

Information Management :: Records Management
About: SportsTracker is an application for recording sporting activities.
It is not bound to a specific kind of sport, as categories can be created
for all sport types, such as cycling, running, or tennis. The main
advantages are the good overview of your exercises and the easy creation
of exercise statistics for specific time ranges and sport types. Users of
heart rate monitors (Polar and CicloSport) can import, display (including
diagrams), and organize the recorded exercise data.
Changes: The PolarViewer diagram now uses the Cairo API for drawing (with
antialiasing). The RS200SD exercise parser has been improved, and the GUI
dialogs are more GNOME HIG compliant now. The event crash bug which
occurred since Mono 1.1.17.1 has been fixed. A lot of internal refactoring
was done to avoid code duplications between SportsTracker and the

About: UDPCast allows to send data simultaneously to many destinations on
a local net. This can for instance be used to install entire classrooms of
PCs at once. The advantage over using other methods (nfs, ftp, whatever) is
that udpcast uses Ethernet's multicast abilities: it won't take longer to
install 15 machines than it would to install 2. The tool comes with a
busybox bootdisk for easy loading of the tool. However, udpcast can also
be started from the command line of an already installed system, and can
be used for other purposes than just system installation.
Changes: In pregenerated images, IGMP level is set to v1 in order to
accomodate certain switches. In the menu system, all block devices except
ramdisk and floppy are listed, rather than only IDE and SCSI disks.
Logging was improved. Miscellaneous bugs were fixed, including multiple
prompt messages with --rexmit-hello-interval, a buffer overrun on the
Windows version, and hdparm failure with exotic device names (cciss/c0d0).

[078] - VRaptor 2.2
by Guilherme Silveira (http://freshmeat.net/users/TechnoBug/)
Mon, Sep 18th 2006 07:25
Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: VRaptor 2 is a Web-based MVC and IOC framework based on many
frameworks and ideas (Seam, Stripes, Webwork, Hibernate Annotations, etc).
It makes full use of Java 5 Annotations. It favors convention over
configuration, because configuration in XML/properties/annotations is
always easy to make mistakes and repetitive (aka copy and paste in many
places). This framework uses a more imperative approach, instead of having
many XML files to configure lifecycle and other properties. Most of the
settings go inside plain Java objects (POJO), so the team knows exactly
what is going on and where.
Changes: VRaptor 2.2 comes with many new examples and improved
documentation. The new FAQ section has been extended. VRaptor now supports
client side redirection and the hibernate validator framework for easier
user data validation. Zero XML configuration is supported, and new
annotations were added. Maven users can find vraptor and its dependencies
at ibiblio under the group ID org.vraptor. The example application can now
be seen live at http://www.vraptor.org/mydvds.

About: V_Sim visualizes atomic structures such as crystals, grain
boundaries, molecules, and so on It can work with files either in binary
format or in plain text format. The rendering is done in pseudo-3D with
colored spheres to represent the atoms. The user can interact through many
functions to choose the view, the size of the atoms, their color, the
background color, the type of fog, and more. Moreover, V_Sim allows you to
export the view as images in GIF, PS, and other formats.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: WidgetServer is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables
an application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server
Swing app, or as a Web app without any change and without loss of
functionality. A rich widget set is supported that includes tree views,
tabbed panes, split panels, and much more. A unified widget-based,
object-oriented programming interface for Web and Swing GUIs is offered to
the developer to control and assemble the GUI. Web applications are fully
AJAX enabled. For Swing client/server applications, the framework handles
client/server communication, including compression and security layers. A
GUI builder is included.
Changes: This release brings some bugfixes in event handling which lead to
significantly lower network traffic when using tree views, tables, and
radio panels. Some other half-object-protocol related redesign was done to
reduce network traffic. Splash screens are displayed much faster now. The
Swing client UI has been decoupled from HTTP request to enhance
responsiveness.
