[003] - Berkeley DB 4.5.20
by Gregory Burd (http://freshmeat.net/users/gregburd/)
Fri, Sep 29th 2006 10:54
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
About: Berkeley DB (libdb) is a programmatic toolkit that provides
embedded database support for both traditional and client/server
applications. It includes b+tree, queue, extended linear hashing, fixed,
and variable-length record access methods, transactions, locking, logging,
shared memory caching, database recovery, and replication for highly
available systems. DB supports C, C++, Java, PHP, and Perl APIs. It is
available for a wide variety of UNIX platforms as well as Windows XP,
Windows NT, and Windows '95 (MSVC 6 and 7).
Changes: Non-stop upgrades for replicated systems: customers can
upgrade/patch the database without taking the entire system down.
Multi-version concurrency control (MVCC) allows read transactions to
proceed without being blocked by write transactions, therefore improving
concurrency and performance. Replication framework is a pre-built, out of
the box framework that makes it faster and easier for developers to build
replicated apps.

[004] - Berkeley DB Java Edition 3.1.0
by Gregory Burd (http://freshmeat.net/users/gregburd/)
Fri, Sep 29th 2006 10:55
Database
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Berkeley DB Java Edition is a high performance transactional
storage engine written entirely in Java. Like the highly successful
Berkeley DB product, it executes in the address space of the application
without the overhead of client/server communication. It stores data in the
application's native format, so no runtime data translation is required. It
supports full ACID transactions and recovery, and provides an easy-to-use
interface, allowing programmers to store and retrieve information quickly,
simply, and reliably.
Changes: Direct Persistence Layer (DPL) is an EJB-style API using Java
annotations to dramatically reduce development time, ease schema design,
and provide indexed access to objects improving data access times. Schema
Evolution of DPL Classes: POJO data contained in Berkeley DB Java Edition
using the DPL can now evolve gracefully from version to version.

About: BMP is a media player which provides a very easy-to-use interface
and usage semantics for all tasks, while having extensive standards and
services support under the hood (MusicBrainz, Last.fm radio/scrobbling,
HAL, DBus), yet keeping the details out of the way of the user.
Changes: The internal SQLite was updated to 3.3.7. Several obsolete code
fragments were removed. The database and library code was cleaned from
redundancies and made more efficient internally. HTTP playback was made to
work with libneon 0.26 or later, and buffering was improved with regard to
latency. Caching of the album cover for the popup/tooltip was implemented
to reduce latencies on song switching. Error reporting for
shoutcast/icecast streams was improved. Various crash conditions were
fixed. Bugs with metadata editing were fixed.

Fri, Sep 29th 2006 08:40
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Cibyl is a programming environment that allows compiled C programs
to execute on J2ME-capable phones. Cibyl uses GCC to compile the C
programs to MIPS binaries, and these are then recompiled into Java
bytecode. The programs are not parsed during runtime, and Cibyl is
therefore relatively well-performing. With Cibyl, games written in C can
be ported to J2ME without switching language.
Changes: Cibyl now handles large projects much better, the library support
for ANSI C and J2ME has been extended greatly, performance optimizations
for common cases have been implemented, and many bugfixes mean that much
more reliable code is produced.

Fri, Sep 29th 2006 00:27
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: JGame is a small high-level 2D game engine for producing games on a
variety of platforms. It does a lot of the stuff you need for a game
automatically, and "classic" type arcade games can be developed with a
minimum of effort. It is based on sprites with automatic collision
detection, and a tile-based background with easy sprite-tile interaction
facilities. JGame games can easily be run as stand-alone applications or
as applets, and can be scaled to any resolution.
Changes: A bug in the ignore condition in StdGame gameOver method, and a
bug in JGEngine, which allowed being in the same game state multiple
times, were fixed. The setFont/setColor code was debugged and cleaned up.
Error reporting is much improved. There's an onscreen failure message for
applets and on-screen error and debug message reporting. StdGame was moved
to the jgame package. Full-screen mode is improved by removing the window
decoration.

[031] - Kamaelia 0.5.0
by Michael (http://freshmeat.net/users/cerenity/)
Fri, Sep 29th 2006 00:09
Internet
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: Kamaelia is a project that aims to allow the BBC and others to
create and test open protocols for large scale streaming. Substantial
subsystems include a core concurrency subsystem and the beginnings of an
RTSP/RTP streaming server. Existing functionality includes a complete
single threaded, coroutine-based concurrency framework (Axon), a generic
TCP client and server framework that allows protocols to be trivially
created, a number of example protocols, and an Ogg Vorbis decoding
subsystem for client site testing (libvorbissimple).
Changes: Key highlights of this release are BitTorrent support, OpenGL
support, massively enhanced DVB support, collaborative whiteboarding with
audio and support for daisy-chaining whiteboards, a nascent seaside-style
Web server, and enhanced visual system composition (i.e. the ability to
compose arbitrary graphs). All of these include examples, including an
OpenGL interface to BitTorrent, a BitTorrent-based simple (non-robust)
streaming system, and a "record for me" scriptable PVR based on programme
name.

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
About: kds (krico's distributed storage) is a distributed storage system.
Its main goal is to work as a session handler for PHP. This package
provides four components: a daemon (kdsd), a command-line cilent (kdsc), a
library (libkds), and a PHP session handler extension. kdsd is a daemon
that uses worker threads to process KDSPROTO requests. It then retreives
or stores data in a BerkeleyDB storage. A nice little curses program is
also supplied to monitor the storage state.
Changes: After being restarted, the daemon sometimes was unable to bind on
the specified address/port for a while. This has been fixed using
setsockopt(SO_REUSE). It is now possible to disable automatic database
checkpoint and log removal at compile time.

About: radmind is a suite of Unix command-line tools and a server designed
to remotely administer the file systems of multiple Unix machines. At its
core, radmind operates as a tripwire. It is able to detect changes to any
managed filesystem object, e.g. files, directories, links, etc. However,
radmind goes further than just integrity checking: once a change is
detected, radmind can optionally reverse the change. Each managed machine
may have its own loadset composed of multiple, layered overloads. This
allows, for example, the operating system to be described separately from
applications. Loadsets are stored on a remote server. By updating a
loadset on the server, changes can be pushed to managed machines.

About: The RDVIS tool helps programmers pin-point the sources of cache
misses and poor temporal locality in their source code. The visualization
often directs the experienced programmer towards the necessary program
transformations within a few minutes. The tool consists of two parts: a
GUI that visualizes the low temporal locality patterns, and a patched GCC
compiler to extract the low-locality patterns from programs.

Fri, Sep 29th 2006 07:44
System :: Monitoring
About: tenshi (formerly wasabi) is a log monitoring program designed to
watch a log file for lines matching user defined regular expressions and
report on the matches. The regular expressions are assigned to queues that
have an alert interval and a list of mail recipients. Queues can be set to
send a notification as soon as there is a log line assigned to them, or to
send periodic reports. Additionally, uninteresting fields in the log lines
(such as PID numbers) can be masked with the standard regular expression
grouping operators ( ). This allows cleaner and more readable reports. All
reports are separated by hostname and all messages are condensed when
possible.

Fri, Sep 29th 2006 16:25
Text Processing :: Markup
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: XML_PullParser moves the API of the PHP XML facility from an
event-based model to a token-based model. Instead of processing data as it
is passed from the parser to callbacks, a script using PullParser requests
"tokens" from XML_PullParser_getToken() and a number of helper functions.
Tokens are arrays representing XML structures, which become available in
the order in which they appear in the document being parsed. Methods are
provided both to get tokens and to extract their data.
Changes: This is a separate class that extends XML_PullParser and should
require no changes to existing code, with one small documented exception.
Complete class documentation and a manual are available on the Web site.
