Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share
leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

[008] - Cibyl 4
by Simon Kagstrom (http://freshmeat.net/users/sys2066/)
Thu, Oct 12th 2006 06:34
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Cibyl is a programming environment that allows compiled C programs
to execute on J2ME-capable phones. Cibyl uses GCC to compile the C
programs to MIPS binaries, and these are then recompiled into Java
bytecode. The programs are not parsed during runtime, and Cibyl is
therefore relatively well-performing. With Cibyl, games written in C can
be ported to J2ME without switching language.
Changes: The ability to catch Java exceptions from C code has been
implemented. Support for J2ME RecordStores have been added. A bug in the
char* to Java String conversion has been fixed, together with many small
improvements.

Thu, Oct 12th 2006 07:08
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Office/Business
About: Cite enables Web developers to set up complete Web sites in very
short time frames. It has all the functionality needed to create arbitrary
site structures. A friendly interface for content editors makes filling
pages a productive and easy process.
Changes: This is mainly a bugfix release, although there is also some new
functionality. You can now define new blocks programmatically in the
interface/block_editors/ directory (instead of statically in the xx_blocks
and xx_blockfields database tables). A new block type, the media gallery,
was experimentally added.

About: Cultivation explores the social interactions within a gardening
community. You lead one family of gardeners, starting with a single
individual, and wise choices can keep your genetic line from extinction.
While breeding plants, eating, and mating, your actions impact your
neighbors, and the social balance sways between conflict and compromise.
Cultivation features dynamic graphics that are procedurally-generated
using genetic representations and cross-breeding. In other words, game
objects are "grown" in real-time instead of being hand-painted or
hard-coded. Each plant and gardener in the game is unique in terms of both
its appearance and behavior.

[015] - DerMixD 1.1.0
by Thomas Orgis (http://freshmeat.net/users/sobukus/)
Thu, Oct 12th 2006 09:38
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3
About: DerMixD is an audio mixing and network-listening daemon that is
similar to mixplayd but quite different in its implementation. It supports
the playing of music files on a run-time configurable number of input
channels, mixing them together and producing output on a run-time
configurable number of output channels. It is controlled over a TCP socket
and supports pitch shifting, scripting, gapless playing of tracks,
including filtering of null samples from padding, use of mpg123's
equalizer, flexible input/output connection, and more.
Changes: Along with the new outputs for Linux/ALSA and Tru64/OSS, there is
a new sine generator as an input for fun. The API has been cleaned up a bit
and extended, as well as the set of command line parameters, with more user
friendliness and configurability in mind (this includes verbose errors and
an online help facility). The overall playback stability is a major focus:
repeated tests with fulll background system load and examination of the
dynamics between buffer and playback threads has hopefully managed to
provide a local optimum.

no way to easily transfer files or move notes.
Changes: This is an early, incomplete release of 0.8.0 that includes some
bugfixes, but most importantly includes the implementation of basic SSL.
By basic, it is meant that the check box "Use SSL" in the configuration
menu will cause anonymous SSL connections to be required inbound and
outbound on all new connections with an FMP2P node.

by Achim Westermann (http://freshmeat.net/users/achimwestermann/)
Thu, Oct 12th 2006 07:17
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Software Development :: Libraries
About: JChart2D is a Swing widget for precise runtime visualization of
numerical tuples in an x-y plot. It is easy to use and is designed for
runtime display. Unlike other charting tools that cover all kinds of views
(pie, bar, etc.), it just creates precise x-y plots. It is thread-safe, in
that many different threads in an application may each add data to plot. A
single chart may contain multiple different traces. It also features
automatic scaling, choice of unit, viewports (zooming), output to images
(png, jpeg), logarithmic axis, and custom rendering of datapoints (lines,
dots, discs, filled polygons).
Changes: This is a major feature and stability release. New features are
the ability to zoom in both directions, an API for highly configurable
error bars, rendering of vertical bars, and a significant improvement of
snapshots via anti-aliasing. Some bugs were fixed regarding UI, release
build, and API behavior (contract).

[027] - KidBASIC 0.4.1
by Ian Larsen (http://freshmeat.net/users/drblast/)
Thu, Oct 12th 2006 00:12
Education
About: KidBASIC is a simple BASIC IDE that allows young children to learn
to program. It was written in response to David Brin's article, "Why
Johnny Can't Code," in which he bemoans the lack of a simple,
line-oriented programming language for children that runs on modern
computers. It features a modest BASIC byte-code compiler and interpreter,
easy to use graphical and text output, and an editor.
Changes: Since version 0.3, performance and stability under Linux and Unix
systems has been significantly enhanced. New graphical functions are
available, and the keyboard can be tested to see which key is being
pressed. This release allows simple video games, like pong and breakout,
to be programmed. More examples have been included and tutorials have been
updated to incorporate the new features.

[028] - KJam Build Tool 0.33
by rafael baptista (http://freshmeat.net/users/rafael_baptista/)
Thu, Oct 12th 2006 09:40
Software Development
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: KJam is a very fast build tool. It is a make replacement, and uses
a syntax similar to Jam, but is much more powerful than the original. It
has built-in dependency scanning, per-target viewpathing, C-like control
flow, and a built-in sh-like shell. It is optimized for multi-processor
machines. It can accelerate software builds by launching build actions on
a distributed peer to peer network of build servers. It is designed to
support large projects with thousands of targets, or projects requiring
building on many target architectures.
Changes: Built-in shell scripts now have their own environment variables.
In the previous version, build actions needing environment variable
support were forced to use external shells. In network mode, variables may
be evaluated on the client or server. This is useful when you need to
access a built-in variable as it exists in the server environment, e.g. to
get the path to a binary on the server machine. The networking code has
also been gone over again to make it more robust to failure.

About: The Mknew Project is an investigation of how to build simple Unix
shell scripts to manage common development and administrative tasks. The
emphasis is on using languages and tools that already exist and are in
common use. A related emphasis is on exploring the functional programming
nature of the bash shell. This is accomplished by using the bash function
capability, and using the bash "$(" ")"syntax to delay function execution
in bash scripts. This allows building scripts that have a LISP-like
function syntax that permits shell scripts to be written as a series of
function calls with minimal syntax. The goal is to provide a way to
specify make procedures of heterogeneous components in a bash script.
These can include diverse source code languages, documentation text, test
procedures, and data. In addition to the mknew function library (mklib),
these "make" procedures rely only on capabilities provided by the bash
shell, and common Unix command line utilities.
Changes: This release provides new capabilities and further explorations
of bash functions. This version of mknew supports the deployment of files
to arbitrary destinations, and is useful for managing many different types
of files, such as configuration files, using a consistent activity pattern.
Once mknew is installed, an "mkd" file is created in the source file
directory, specifying the primary source file types. To deploy files,
simply type "mk all" at the shell prompt.

[035] - OpenVZ kernel 2.6.9 023stab030.1 (RHEL4)
by Kir Kolyshkin (http://freshmeat.net/users/k001/)
Thu, Oct 12th 2006 07:09
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: OpenVZ is a modified Linux kernel with additional support for
OpenVZ Virtual Environments (VE, also known as VPS). VEs are isolated,
secure environments on a single physical server, enabling better server
utilization and ensuring that applications do not conflict. Each VE
performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server; VEs can be
rebooted independently and have root access, users, IP addresses, memory,
processes, files, applications, system libraries, and configuration files.
Due to a single kernel model, OpenVZ has native performance and very high
density. It is the core of Virtuozzo.
Changes: This release is now based on the RHEL4 2.6.9-42.0.3EL kernel. The
drivers were updated. The configurations were synchronized with RHEL. CPT
fixes, mainstream updates, a lot of virtualization enhancements (sysctls,
sysfs, stats), OOM-killer fixes, and VE cleanup speedup were done.

and JavaScript code that will make a pop-up window appear to let the user
choose a date from a calendar. The selected date will be passed to a
user-specified control from the calling page. Every aspect is customizable
by modifying a template and a related CSS file. The format in which the
date is returned, the default date and time period, and the first day of
the week can be selected.
Changes: You can now set specific date ranges from which the user can pick
a date, thus restricting the user from choosing wrong dates (see the manual
for the new selectableRange property). An Italian language translation was
added. A French language translation was added.

About: PHPlottery is a script for running a simple lottery without
requiring users to register. This is simply done by creating a key-pair.
This pair is then known by the user and by the application for later use.
To prevent simple abuse, the script can use IP-store/block and cookies.
When the lottery should decide the winner, a key-pair will selected out of
the database. The public key of this pair will be sent out to everybody who
is supposed to know the result of the lottery. Winners have to submit the

[042] - Rule Set Based Access Control 1.3.0 (Stable)
by frealek (http://freshmeat.net/users/frealek/)
Thu, Oct 12th 2006 07:19
Security
About: Rule Set Based Access Control (RSBAC) is a Free Software security
extension for current Linux kernels. It is based on the Generalized
Framework for Access Control (GFAC) by Abrams and LaPadula and provides a
flexible system of access control based on several modules. All security
relevant system calls are extended by security enforcement code. This code
calls the central decision component, which in turn calls all active
decision modules and generates a combined decision. This decision is then
enforced by the system call extensions.
Changes: This version offers many improvements over the 1.2.x series and
supports kernels 2.4.33.3 and 2.6.18. It includes speed and scalability
enhancements, more control over suid files, sockets, authentication,
options to the jail module, dazuko udev support, and much more.

[044] - Scala 2.2.0 (Scala 2)
by Stephane Micheloud (http://freshmeat.net/users/s_micheloud/)
Thu, Oct 12th 2006 13:50
Software Development :: Compilers
About: Scala is a modern multi-paradigm programming language designed to
express common programming patterns in a concise, elegant, and type-safe
way. It smoothly integrates features of object-oriented and functional
languages including mixins, algebraic datatypes with pattern matching,
genericity, and more. It is well integrated with Java and .NET: the Scala
compiler produces standard Java class files or .NET assemblies, and
Java/.NET libraries and frameworks can be used without glue code or
additional declarations.
Changes: This release introduces binary incompatibilities. By recompiling
all of your code, you will guarantee smooth operation. If you cannot do
that, be aware of the changes. In particular, Java bytecode is now
generated with correct inner-class attributes.

[046] - SQLIer 0.8.2b
by Brad Cable (http://freshmeat.net/users/Aeiri/)
Thu, Oct 12th 2006 09:44
Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Security
About: SQLIer takes an URL vulnerable to SQL injection attacks and
attempts to determine all of the necessary information to build and
exploit an SQL injection hole by itself. It requires no user interaction
unless it can't guess the table/field names correctly. By doing so, it can
build a UNION SELECT query designed to brute force passwords out of the
database. It does not use quotes in the exploit, meaning it will work for
a wider range of sites. An 8 character password (containing any character
from decimal ASCII code 1-127) takes approximately one minute to crack.
Changes: This release removes the dependency on the "tempfile" command,
which apparently is Debian/Debian-derivative specific. It should now work
on most GNU/Unix platforms.

[047] - Stunnix C and C++ Obfuscator 2.7
by Stunnix (http://freshmeat.net/users/stunnix/)
Thu, Oct 12th 2006 14:03
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Pre-processors
System :: Software Distribution
About: Stunnix CXX-Obfus is a code obfuscator for C and C++ source code.
It converts source code into highly a mangled form, making it extremely
difficult for competitors or customers to study, analyze, reuse, and
re-work, while fully retaining functionality of the original code. It has
many options to control all aspects of code hiding, and has full support
for all syntax constructs. It is designed for multi-file projects with
mixed C and C++ source and arbitrary heavy use of the C preprocessor. It
includes advanced tools to exclude API symbols from mangling.
Changes: In Project Manager, it's possible to specify rules (in the form
of filename patterns and corresponding processing mode) on how to mangle
(obfuscate/scramble) files in the Project Directory that are not
registered in the project. This allows the program to generate
buildscript only once, and use it for frequent rebuilding of the projects
in which new source files are introduced or removed very frequently.
Support for C syntax has been improved.
