Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

About: The ActiveBPEL engine is a robust runtime environment capable of
executing process definitions created according to the Business Process
Execution Language for Web Services (BPEL4WS, or just BPEL) 1.1 and
WS-BPEL 2.0 specifications.

Changes: This release provides full support for the WS-BPEL 2.0
specification, as well as continued support for the BPEL4WS 1.1
specification. Active Endpoints has also released a Beta version of the
ActiveBPEL Designer. This includes support for the creation and deployment
of WS-BPEL 2.0 and BPEL4WS 1.1 process definitions, and assists with the
migration of BPEL4WS 1.1 process definitions to the new WS-BPEL 2.0
standard.

  Fri, Oct 13th 2006 00:10

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Security
System :: Monitoring

About: Advchk is a tool for monitoring the security of installed software.
Advisory Check gathers security advisories using RSS/RDF/XML feeds,
compares them against a list of known software, and alerts you if you're
vulnerable. Since adding software lists by hand would be quite a boring
task, advchk leverages your system's package manager for detecting
software. Software installed on remote systems can be monitored by
executing the remote package manager as an SSH ForcedCommand using
Public-key authentication.

Changes: The (enable)SshUpdate.sh functionalities have been integrated
into the main program. The -D option was added for dumping the database.
The README file was turned into a manual page.

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The ATLAS (Automatically Tuned Linear Algebra Software) project is
an ongoing research effort focusing on applying empirical techniques in
order to provide portable performance. It provides C and Fortran77
interfaces to a portably efficient BLAS implementation, as well as a few
routines from LAPACK.

Changes: x86 assembly kernels in Level 1 and src directories have been
adapted to also run under OS X. A needed #define has been added to
ATLAS/src/invtst.c. A fix has been made to disambiguate int and long in
the f77/C interface.

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: The Autoconf Macro Archive provides documented and tested macros
that are useful to many software writers using the autoconf tool, but too
 specific to be included into autoconf itself.

Changes: AX_CREATE_STDINT_H replaces AC_CREATE_STDINT_H. Cosmetic changes
have been imported from the sf.net branch version 2006-09-27.

[005] - Big Faceless PDF Library 2.7.3
  by BFO (Big Faceless Organization)
(http://freshmeat.net/users/faceless/)
  Fri, Oct 13th 2006 07:29

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Office/Business

About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support, verification for digital signatures and text
extraction. Both variations offer full Unicode support, encryption,
embedded TrueType and Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, spot and
calibrated color.

Changes: Font encodings have been completely reworked (a large change). As
a result, rendering PDFs containing "unusual" characters or encodings is
much improved. Some missing glyphs have been added to the StandardFont
class, which can now support all of ISO-8859-1, ISO-8859-2, ISO-8859-9,
and ISO-8859-15. Chinese/Japanese/Korean PDFs using non-UCS2 or UTF16
encodings are supported. Better font substitutions are mode for
non-embedded fonts on Windows, OS X, and Linux. A bug has been fixed which
caused the last revision in a PDF to be skipped if it was less than 1024
bytes long.

[006] - Blossoc 1.0.8

  Fri, Oct 13th 2006 11:01

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: Blossoc is a linkage disequilibrium association mapping tool that
attempts to build (perfect) genealogies for each site in the input, score
these according to non-random clustering of affected individuals, and
judge high-scoring areas as likely candidates for containing disease
affecting variation. Building the local genealogy trees is based on a
number of heuristics that are not guaranteed to build true trees, but have
the advantage over more sophisticated methods of being extremely fast.
Blossoc can therefore handle much larger data sets than more sophisticated
tools, but at the cost of sacrificing some accuracy.

Changes: This release implements improved algorithms for detecting
compatible regions and building corresponding trees. The new algorithms
gives several orders of magnitude in speedup.

About: CLISH is a modular framework for implementing a CISCO-like CLI on a
Unix system. Arbitrary command menus and actions can be defined using XML
files. This software handles the user interaction, and forks the
appropriate system commands to perform any actions.

Changes: The release process has been updated to ensure that all files
have Unix line endings, which prevents shell scripts from failing during
configuration. Updated to work on 64-bit architectures Tested on 64-bit
and 32-bit Linux as well as on Cygwin. Various memory leak fixes Updated

  Fri, Oct 13th 2006 11:02

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

[012] - Cultivation 5
  by Jason Rohrer (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcr13/)
  Fri, Oct 13th 2006 13:16

Games/Entertainment

About: Cultivation explores the social interactions within a gardening
community. You lead one family of gardeners, starting with a single
individual, and wise choices can keep your genetic line from extinction.
While breeding plants, eating, and mating, your actions impact your
neighbors, and the social balance sways between conflict and compromise.
Cultivation features dynamic graphics that are procedurally-generated
using genetic representations and cross-breeding. In other words, game
objects are "grown" in real-time instead of being hand-painted or
hard-coded. Each plant and gardener in the game is unique in terms of both
its appearance and behavior.

System

About: grml is a live CD originally based on Knoppix and currently based
on Debian. It includes a collection of GNU/Linux software especially for
users of texttools and system administrators. It provides automatic
hardware detection, and its default shell is the zsh. You can use it e.g.
as a rescue system, for analyzing systems/networks, or as a working
environment. It is not necessary to install anything to a hard disk; you
don't even need a hard disk to run it. Due to on-the-fly decompression, it
includes about 2.1 GB of software and documentation on the CD.

Changes: Amongst the usual updated packages (including X.org 7.0), support
for UMTS cards and new scripts were added, like grml-tpm, grml-resolution,
and others.

[027] - GTK Photo Gallery 0.34
  by Jens Wilke (http://freshmeat.net/users/jenswilke/)
  Fri, Oct 13th 2006 06:30

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: GTK Photo Gallery is an album to manage small and medium-sized
photograph collections. It allows quick management by processing multiple
files together. Rotate, delete, move, and manage descriptions can be done
for all files in one directory at once. It is possible to upload pictures
to an online laboratory to order prints. GTK Photo Gallery is implemented
with GTK2-Perl, and due to the lack of a Web server in between, it is much
faster than CGI-based scripts. It uses the same directory structure as
(and can be used together with) My Photo Gallery (a set of CGI scripts).
It is possible to export (and import) an Album into 700 MB large parts for
easy CD backup, including static HTML pages to navigate the CD. This can
also be used to create a simple album for the Web.

Changes: This release sets environment variables for the encoding on
startup. A workaround has been added to properly display the exif data
each time.

About: inotify-cxx is the C++ interface for Linux inotify technology. It
offers a few simple objects instead of low-level data such as file
descriptors, watch descriptors, etc.

Changes: Two additional flags (IN_ONLYDIR and IN_DONT_FOLLOW) can be used
if they are available. "Erroneous" multiple watches on the same path are
no longer possible. inotify-syscalls.h is included only if inotify.h
doesn't contain syscall definitions. Enabling and disabling are now done
through watch presence in the kernel instead of dropping events. The

[040] - libferris 1.1.99
  by Ben Martin (http://freshmeat.net/users/monkeyiq/)
  Fri, Oct 13th 2006 07:24

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Filesystems

About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each file or
directory to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as filesystems and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include native (kernel disk IO with fam), XML
(mount an XML file as a filesystem), DB4, xmldb, Evolution, Firefox,
Emacs, LDAP, HTTP, FTP, eet, sockets, RDF/XML, RDF/bdb, and mbox. EA
generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.

Changes: This release improves the interface for plugin registration,
allowing dynamic installation of indexing plugins. ferrisls can now
present its results as RDF. Federate indexes can now perform URL
substitutions for matching document paths. Read-only db4 files can now be
mounted. PostgreSQL index plugins can now read their configuration files
from read-only NFS shares. A new ferris-myrdf-inference performs offline
RDF smushing.

About: libstldb4 is a C++ wrapper for the sleepycat db4 database. It uses
the STL in the API where sensible, allows standard IOStreams for data
access where sensible, e.g. getting the value of a key should be able to
use an istream interface to allow simple partial value retreival, and
moves the transaction parameter to be the last optional parameter or
provides two versions of the same method for trans/nontrans. The API has
been modified to use more standard types. Operator overloading is used to
allow quick and dirty coding (mydb[ "key" ] = "value";) to set and cerr.

About: PHP Image Manipulation Class can be used to perform several types
of image manipulation operations. It can rescale images to fit in a given
width or height keeping (or not) the original aspect ratio, flip images
horizontally or vertically, and rotate images by a given angle while
filling the empty spaces with a given color. All operations preserve
transparency. The class does all the error checking for the source and
target files. The class supports loading and saving images in the GIF,
JPEG, and PNG formats.

Changes: The crop() method was added. The preserveSourceFileTime property
was added, which instructs the scripts to preserve the date and time of
the source files and pass them on to the target files. The flip methods
now use the imagecopyresampled function instead of using imagecopy. The
script no longer crashes when a valid path which is not a file is
specified as a source file. Error handling for the
create_image_from_source_file() private method was fixed, so the script
can no longer be easily crashed by specifying bogus source files.

[061] - Proxifier 0.9.4b
  by Brad Cable (http://freshmeat.net/users/Aeiri/)
  Fri, Oct 13th 2006 15:56

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: Proxifier is an easy to install three tier Web proxy. Its features
include the ability to remove cookies, the HTTP referer field, the HTTP
user-agent field, scripts on the page, and objects, altering the
user-agent string to whatever you please, and tunnelling your proxied
traffic through a second proxy.

Changes: This release fixes a bug where the "Status" HTTP header wasn't
being sent, fixing various HTTP authentication and redirect bugs. The
Javascript engine has been rewritten to be theoretically unbreakable by
the target page by wrapping all the Javascript functions and variables
with the "COOK_PREF" random string. A bug where a character would be
removed after a "top" object in Javascript parsing has been fixed. Some
AJAX bugs with how certain programmers define XMLHttpRequest objects have
been fixed. A bug where forms were being submitted to the wrong address
has been fixed. A bug where "javascript:" URLs were being incorrectly
parsed has been fixed.

[063] - RSIBreak 0.8.0
  by Bram (http://freshmeat.net/users/bramschnmkrs/)
  Fri, Oct 13th 2006 13:21

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)

About: RSIBreak can be used to remind you to take a break now and then.
It will show you a random picture from a collection you can configure
yourself for a configurable duration at a configurable interval. You can
use these breaks to do some stretch exercises, for example, or as a
reminder to walk away from the computer for a while. RSIBreak will sit in
your system tray, and when it is time for a break, it will show you the
picture full screen. All timings can be set by clicking with the right
mouse button on the icon in the system tray.

Changes: The DCOP dialog has been replaced with a more powerful KNotify
dialog. This release shows where RSIBreak is located in the tray when
started a second time. There is an option to only reset timers when idle
for the duration of a long break. There is a skip button in the relax
popup. There are Xinerama fixes. Images smaller than 1/3 of the screen
will not be used for the slideshow.

About: Simple Groupware is a complete groupware package. Unlike other
groupwares, Simple Groupware contains a new programming language called
sgsML, which was created to quickly create powerful Web applications.

Changes: The views in the task module were improved, so overdue tasks now
get marked. Mail identities were added to allow more than one mail address
for every user. Moreover, fulltext indexes for PostgreSQL were added to
speed up searching. Versioning for files uploaded by the client was
implemented together with a folder history for quickly accessing the last
folders. The number of files for a single field was increased in all
modules. Fixes were applied to data handlers for local files and deleting
files from the disk. The styles in the calendar views were fixed for IE.

[065] - Sotacs 0.9
  by perseios (http://freshmeat.net/users/perseios/)
  Fri, Oct 13th 2006 02:08

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Sotacs is a collection of components for the Tapestry Web
Framework. It provides 'NavigationBar', a JavaScript-powered hierarchical
navigation bar with collapsable folders, mouse-over highlighting, and
selection highlighting, 'DynamicImage', which produces JPEG or PNG images
on the server with an AWT-like painting listener method and sophisticated
caching options, 'AjaxTextField', an AJAX powered text field that supports
auto-complete hints in a pop-up box, and 'TransparentPNG', which makes
alpha-transparent .png images display correctly on all browsers incuding
Internet Explorer 5.

Changes: An API was added to DynamicImage to generate image maps with
tooltips. It is also possible to add both JavaScript and/or DirectLink
events to the map areas. The "encoding" parameter was introduced into
NavigationBar, allowing non-ASCII characters to be interpreted correctly
by the caching mechanism. Menu intialization is performed inmediately
after inserting the menu in the page. The DTD for the validation of the
XML is now retrieved from the library.

  Fri, Oct 13th 2006 13:14

Scientific/Engineering
Text Processing :: Linguistic
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Uplug is a collection of tools for linguistic corpus processing,
word alignment, and term extraction from parallel corpora. Several tools
have been integrated in Uplug. Pre-processing tools include a sentence
splitter, tokenizer, and external part-of-speech tagger and shallow
parsers. The following external tools are used: the Grok system for
English (tagging and chunking) and the morphological analyzer ChaSen for
Japanese. Other tools such as the TreeTagger can easily be added.
Translated documents can be sentence aligned using the length-based
approach by Gale & Church. Words and phrases can be aligned using the clue
alignment approach and the toolbox for training statistical alignment
models GIZA++.

Changes: User management for the Web-based alignment interfaces (ICA &
ISA) using simple password protection and user-specific data storage. 2
new sentence aligners integrated into Uplug: hunalign and GMA. Another
sentence alignment approach: uplugalign (length-based sentence alignment
with cognate/dictionary filters). Quickstart documentation for the new
features.

Education :: Testing
Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Quality Assurance

About: Uppaal TRON is a testing tool for black-box conformance testing of
real-time embedded software systems. Given a formal timed automata model
of the system under test (SUT) and its assumed operating environment, it
automatically generates, executes, and checks timed test sequences online.
The observed behavior is required to be timed trace included in the
specification. The tool is based on the Uppaal engine, which is a
model-checker of real-time systems modeled as networks of timed automata.

Changes: This build is the first supporting Windows (earlier ones were
Linux/Solaris only). A Microsoft Visual C library adapter example has been
added. Textual communication via a standard I/O adapter has been added (see
tracer example). A TCP/IP socket adapter has been added for remote IUTs. A
Java adapter framework has been added with virtual and real-time support.
A check has been added for correct system model partitioning by
input/output channels. Emulation has been fixed: this release will emulate
only environment invariants when deciding input stimuli timing.
