Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

[001] - AgileWiki 3.5.0.8
  by Bill la Forge (http://freshmeat.net/users/laforge49/)
  Sun, Oct 15th 2006 00:50

Database
Documentation
Information Management

About: AgileWiki is a Java-based wiki that provides a virtual wiki for
each registered user, complete with access control, versioning,
hierarchical structures, namespace management, and semantic relations,
qualifiers, and inferencing. This is a rich system that is also easy for
casual users to browse or add content. Prototypes for this system also
included an email client and server-to-server content sharing.

Changes: The view command now supports a Tables feature. When a link
resolves to more than one Rolon, it is displayed in italics. The ruleDUs
command is now part of the Semantics feature. The new resolve command
lists rolons which match a name or pathname. The new ? extension to
CurlyBraceNotation works with resolve. Pathnames are now working correctly
with relation csecs.

  by Antoine Levy-Lambert (http://freshmeat.net/users/AntoineLL/)
  Sun, Oct 15th 2006 18:44

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: Ant is a Java based build tool, similar to make, but with better
support for the cross platform issues involved with developing Java
applications. Ant is the build tool of choice for all Java projects at
Apache and many other Open Source Java projects.

Changes: Bugfixes. References are now processed when targets are executed,
not at parse time.

[003] - Aranea framework 1.0
  by Taimo (http://freshmeat.net/users/taimo/)
  Sun, Oct 15th 2006 00:07

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: Aranea is a hierarchical Model-View-Controller Web framework that
provides a common, simple approach to building Web application components,
reusing custom or general GUI logic, and extending the framework. The
framework enforces programming using object oriented techniques with POJOs
and provides a JSP tag library that facilitates the programming of Web GUIs
without writing HTML. In addition to being a full-fledged Web framework in
its own right, it provides a powerful and simple component system that
allows the framework to be tailored by configuring the reusable modules
and adding modules only for the missing features.

Changes: This is the first stable release of Aranea Web Framework. The API
is now fully frozen until the 2.x release cycle. The updated documentation
includes a 120+ page Reference Manual, an Introductory Tutorial, a
Hands-On Tutorial, Technical Report, Javadoc API, and example
applications.

  by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: General affine transforms and clipping may be applied to TeX
labels. Alternate TeX engines are supported. Separate x and y unitsize
scalings are supported. Images can be drawn for irregular mesh contours
and two-dimensional pen arrays. Landscape slides automatically enable the
PDF autorotate option. Setlocale errors are ignored. The "Cannot write to
venn_.tex" error under Windows XP was fixed. Old readline libraries found
on many MacOS X systems are detected. Support for asy-mode.el under Emacs
version 21 was added. The option \usepackage[inline]{asymptote} works with
latex and pdflatex.

  Sun, Oct 15th 2006 09:28

Other/Nonlisted Topic
Software Development
Software Development :: Build Tools

About: AutoGen is a tool designed for generating program files that
contain repetitive text with varied substitutions. Its goal is to simplify
the maintenance of programs that contain large amounts of repetitious text.
This is especially valuable if there are several blocks of such text that
must be kept synchronized. Output is specified with a Scheme-enhanced
output template. Input, if required by your template, may come from
AutoGen definitions, CGI data, or XML files.

Changes: A few convenience functions have been added for manipulating
string tables. This is primarily a vehicle for an AutoOpts bugfix.

  by Bruce Korb (http://freshmeat.net/users/bkorb/)
  Sun, Oct 15th 2006 09:29

Software Development
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Libraries

About: AutoOpts is an integrated part of AutoGen. Based on a very simple
option description file, it will process configuration files, environment
variables, command line options, text strings passed by client programs,
and will make the results easily accessible to the client program. It will
also produce a man page and the info-doc invoking section automatically.

Changes: This release fixes a memory referencing issue that affected "make
check" on a few platforms. There are more tweaks to make it compile on
Windows platforms that do not have a Bourne-derived shell installed.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is
small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence,
different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Hash, and Least
Resource) and a customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It
supports VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) to set up high
availability configurations on multiple nodes. It integrates pcap packet
dumping for debugging purposes and allows the implementation of a
"transparent forensic logging bridge".

Changes: The new boolean parameter "localdsr" allows operation of
BalanceNG in single legged DSR (Direct Server Return) mode directly on the
target machine itself. Network Address Translation (NAT) has been
implemented, including state synchronisation between master and backup
node. The manual has been updated to release 1.672.0.

  by Willy Tarreau (http://freshmeat.net/users/wtarreau/)
  Sun, Oct 15th 2006 18:41

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
System :: Networking

About: HAproxy is a high-performance and highly-robust TCP/HTTP load
balancer which provides cookie-based persistence, advanced traffic
regulation with surge protection, automatic failover, run-time regex-based
header control, Web-based reporting, advanced logging to help
trouble-shooting buggy applications and/or networks, and a few other
features. Its own event-driven state machine achieves 10,000 hits per
second on modern hardware, even with tens of thousands of simultaneous
connections.

Changes: The "redispatch" option, which had no effect on most types of
connection errors, has been fixed. Small speed improvements should be
noticed. The code has been slightly cleaned up to ease auditing.

  Sun, Oct 15th 2006 12:00

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: Imabluri takes a message from your SMTP server, runs virus and spam
checks on it, and does some marking and logging. Afterwards, it hands the
message over to your mailbox system or IMAP/POP3 server. A daemon approach
minimizes the system load. A very small client program actually takes the
mail from the SMTP server, writes it to your hard drive, and adds it to a
MySQL database. The daemon is polled after the client stores the message,
and tries to spawn a child process that does the actual checks. This
project replaces vislog, which will no longer be mantained.

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: JGame is a small 2D game engine that runs on any Java 1.2+
platform. It provides a very high-level framework, enabling "classic" type
arcade games to be developed with a minimum of code and effort. It is based
on sprites with automatic animation and collision detection, and a
tile-based background with easy sprite-tile interaction facilities. JGame
games can be run as both applications and applets, and can be scaled to
any resolution or run full-screen.

Changes: A concurrency bug where objects are concurrently accessed by game
thread and repaint thread has been fixed. A game launcher was added to the
examples package so the games can be run with -jar. Minor Java 1.2
compatibility problems were fixed. Minor performance tweaks were made.

[029] - JNutrix  0.12
  by soucy-al (http://freshmeat.net/users/also515/)
  Sun, Oct 15th 2006 11:59

About: JNutrix is a small application written with the Java language. You
can search and find the 131 nutrient values, if they are recorded, of over
5300 foods usually found on the Canadian market. The utilization is quite
trivial, and makes use of the mouse except for entering the name of the
food. The name of the food can be search for by entering the first
characters or a few sets of characters separated by spaces. Once the food
is found and its quantity fixed, the food can be cumulate to form a meal,
which you can print. The nutrients can be sorted by clicking on the column
header. The program has a French or English interface as well as a
bilingual database.

Changes: A new report the user can print.

[033] - Kana no quiz 1.7
  by Choplair (http://freshmeat.net/users/Choplair/)
  Sun, Oct 15th 2006 06:15

Education :: Testing

About: Kana no quiz is a little educational tool to memorize the
pronunciation of Japanese kana (hiragana & katakana) in an easy way. The
method is quite simple: a kana appears randomly and you have to find its
romaji transcription. Kana no quiz may thus fit the needs of both a
beginner and a master of kana. It has been translated into several
languages, and many quiz options are configurable. Kana images have been
initially modelled in SVG and are placed under the Free Art License
(http://artlibre.org/licence/lal/en/).

Changes: This release introduces a brand new kana table window that
provides a very convenient way to either view the full kana list (with
transcription and sorting that respects traditional order), to select the
portion(s) to be trained upon, or to see high size kana images (by
clicking on thumbnails). This version also features a new kana image
scaling param, the optional use of Psyco to increase overall speed,
various GUI enhancements, important code style cleanups, and programming
design optimizations. The Tkinter GUI was removed.

  Sun, Oct 15th 2006 08:42

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The OpenDBX library provides a unified and consistent API for
software developers to different database management systems. The function
library is written in the C programming language and aims at implementing
access to the native database interfaces efficiently via a thin
abstraction layer. It consists of a basic set of functions that are part
of all vendor database libraries and can be extended by additional
function blocks. Currently, Firebird/Interbase, MS SQL Server, MySQL,
Oracle PostgreSQL, SQLite 2 and 3, and Sybase ASE are supported.

Changes: Much work has been done to clean up several backends and optimize
the mssql and sybase backends to be in par with the other ones in terms of
code quality. Further big changes were the replacement of the ODBX_* types
by the ODBX_TYPE_* ones and the comparison of pointers to NULL instead of
0. There are also some important bugfixes included, like the wrong code
the pgsql backend returned for empty queries or the off by one bug in
odbx_excape(). Moreover, there was an uninitialized variable for the host
string in mysql_odbx_init().

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: The Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a collection of three
system daemons that are designed to work with the Linux Netfilter
firewalling code to detect port scans and other suspect traffic. It
features a set of highly configurable danger thresholds (with sensible
defaults), verbose alert messages, email alerting, DShield reporting, and
automatic blocking of offending IP addresses. Psad incorporates many of
the packet signatures included in Snort to detect various kinds of
suspicious scans, and implements the same passive OS fingerprinting
algorithm used by p0f.

Changes: This release adds the ability to get the auto-blocking status for
a specific IP address in --status-ip mode. There is a bugfix to use the
IPT_OUTPUT_FILE and IPT_ERROR_FILE configuration variables. There is a
bugfix to restore "start" functionality in the Gentoo init script. The
ability to selectively disable psad auto-blocking email messages has been

[077] - XML event log library 0.1.1
  by legatvs (http://freshmeat.net/users/legatvs/)
  Sun, Oct 15th 2006 09:27

Software Development

About: libXEL (XEL) is an event log library that stores log data in SQLite
files and is capable of exporting it as XML and CSV. It provides a set of
C/C++ preprocessor macros for project integration. It can gather some
information about the system at run time. It is ideal, but not limited, to
generate log data for debugging purposes. The ‘xelm’ macros wrap the most
common C/C++ macros (e.g. __FILE__) to be posted along with the event
information. This and all the other information is stored in SQLite files
that can be accessed from many programming languages. Exported XML can be
used together, for example, with XSLT to provide a visually rich
presentation of log data in a modern Web browser.

Changes: This release improved portability, removes Linux-specific code,
and compiles and runs under FreeBSD. The xelExportCSV fn_csv_events
parameter requirement has been removed. SID strings ending with LF (0x0A)
have been fixed. There are other minor tweaks.
