Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Ajax Data Objects (ajaxdo) provides an easy database persistency
framework for JavaScript objects. Ajaxdo enables runtime loading, saving,
deleting, and listing of JavaScript objects stored on the server database.
Using Ajaxdo can dramatically reduce server side code and make a Web 2.0
application port easily from one server-side programming language to
another.

Changes: This release adds a fully functional Java server-side
implementation in addition to the pre-existing PHP server-side
implementation. Ajaxdo enabled applications can now work in a JSP/JDBC
environment and port easily from PHP to Java and vice versa.

About: ALE is an image-processing program used for tasks such as
super-resolution, deblurring, noise reduction, and anti-aliasing. Its
principle of operation is synthetic capture, combining multiple inputs
representing the same scene.

Changes: This prerelease includes an autotools build system, documentation
licensed under GPL, and an updated user interface accepting scope
operators. In particular, the --mc option has been changed to allow file
scoping. The documentation is currently incomplete. A release plan is
included in the TODO file, with entries for 0.8.5, 0.9.0, and 1.0.0
releases.

[004] - arpalert 2.0.0 (beta) (Development)
  by Thierry FOURNIER (http://freshmeat.net/users/fourniert/)
  Mon, Oct 16th 2006 11:15

Security
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: arpalert uses ARP address monitoring to help prevent unauthorized
connections on the local network. If an illegal connection is detected, a
program or script is launched, which could be used to send an alert
message, for example.

Changes: Listening on more than one interface port is permitted on
solaris10. ARP replies can be analyzed, which is useful if arpalert is
running on a router. The format of the config files was updated to use the
ethernet interfaces name. The "ignore me" option is only used for the
"unauth_rq" alerts. A new debug format, similar to tcpdump trace, was
added. A new core scheduler was created for more speed. All internal times
are in microseconds instead of seconds. Internal storage structurs were
changed for more speed. The configure.in file was cleaned. New defines
were added for more code readability.

  by constans (http://freshmeat.net/users/constans/)
  Mon, Oct 16th 2006 18:32

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Scientific/Engineering
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: cb2Bib is a tool for rapidly extracting unformatted bibliographic
references from email alerts, journal Web pages, and PDF files. It
facilitates the capture of single references from unformatted sources.
References are written in BibTeX. A PDF file with the article text, if
available, can be easily linked and renamed by dragging it onto the
cb2Bib window. Reference manager applications can later retrieve,
import, and display these BibTeX references.

Changes: All known issues related to Qt3 to Qt4 migration have been
addressed. Mainly, this release fixes field selection in cb2Bib panel,
copying/moving files from PDFImport, and some incorrect open file dialog
messages. A few minor improvements have been included. In particular, file
selection dialogs display navigation history, and the BibTeX output file
can be more conveniently selected from a combo list. Such a feature is
especially useful to users that sort references in thematic files.

[012] - check_logfiles 1.3.6
  by lausser (http://freshmeat.net/users/lausser/)
  Mon, Oct 16th 2006 19:22

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: check_logfiles is a plugin for Nagios which checks logfiles for
defined patterns. It is capable of detecting logfile rotation. If you tell
it how the rotated archives look, it will also examine these files. Unlike
check_logfiles, traditional logfile plugins were not aware of the gap
which could occur, so under some circumstances they ignored what had
happened between their checks. A configuration file is used to specify
where to search, what to search, and what to do if a matching line is
found.

Changes: This release adds execution of scripts if inverse patterns are
not found. It corrects typos in the README. Command line parameters have
been added. For simple configurations, you no longer need a config file.

  Mon, Oct 16th 2006 01:55

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for rapidly developing search
engines on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It's
scalable, easy to create, and fast to search. It features a built-in
database crawler following user-defined SQL, incremental indexing,
user-controllable result ranking, the ability to return results with
highlights (like Google), and categorized result counts (like Amazon). It
can easily integrate with a non-Java environment with XML/JSON. There is a
UI for all operations, so no Java coding is necessary.

Changes: A configurable multi-searcher mode was added. A status report in
XML format was added for system and specific index. Applying global stop
words is avoided. PingAction was added to check DBSight health. Options
were added to show all contents for an empty query.

  by Simon Kelley (http://freshmeat.net/users/simonkelley/)
  Mon, Oct 16th 2006 13:45

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: Dnsmasq is a lightweight, easy to configure DNS forwarder and DHCP
server. It is designed to provide DNS and (optionally) DHCP to a small
network. It can serve the names of local machines which are not in the
global DNS. The DHCP server integrates with the DNS server and allows
machines with DHCP-allocated addresses to appear in the DNS with names
configured either in each host or in a central configuration file. Dnsmasq
supports static and dynamic DHCP leases and BOOTP for network booting of
diskless machines.

Changes: The main changes in this release are enhancements to the
lease-change script function. The script is now run as root even if
dnsmasq drops root privileges, and more information about the hostname and
DHCP vendorclass and userclass information is provided to it. A new
configuration flag has been added to cause the DNS cache to be
automatically cleared when changing upstream nameservers. There are a few
bugfixes, all for minor and obscure problems.

[016] - ExactImage 0.2.2
  by René Rebe (http://freshmeat.net/users/ReneRebe/)
  Mon, Oct 16th 2006 11:23

Multimedia :: Graphics

About: ExactImage is a fast C++ image processing library. Unlike
ImageMagick, it allows operation in several color spaces and bit depths
natively, resulting in much lower memory and computational requirements.
Some optimized algorithms operate in 1/20 of the time ImageMagick
requires, and displaying large images can be as fast as 1/10 of the time
the "display" program takes.

Changes: The official stable API has been fixed to only include bardecode
support if it is actually enabled. The BMP codec has been fixed for GCC
versions before 4.0. The 90-degree rotation optimization was added back to
the rotation method. The barcode detection can now be controlled in more
detail. The recognized types are returned to the caller.

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwknop implements an authorization scheme that requires only a
single encrypted packet to communicate various pieces of information,
including desired access through a Netfilter policy and/or specific
commands to execute on the target system. The main application of this
program is to protect services such as SSH with an additional layer of
security in order to make the exploitation of vulnerabilities much more
difficult. The authorization server works by passively monitoring
authorization packets via libpcap.

Changes: REQUIRE_SOURCE_ADDRESS was added (but is disabled by default) to
force fwknop clients to know their source IP address (i.e. -s cannot be
used). So, either fwknop clients have to use -R to resolve their
externally routable address, or they must just know what it is. Net-RawIP
was updated to 0.21_03 for compatibility with gcc-4.x compilers.
List-MoreUtils 0.22 was added, which is a dependency of the new Net::RawIP
module. A bug was fixed to restore "start" functionality in the Gentoo init
script. A bug was fixed to use the IPT_OUTPUT_FILE and IPT_ERROR_FILE
configuration variables in fwknopd.

Information Management

About: GCstar is an application that can be used to manage collections of
different types. Users can enter all the items they own, along with
associated information and later perform searches using filtering
criteria. A plugin system allows some information to be downloaded
automatically from Internet sites. Collections can be exported to many
formats, including HTML, XML, CSV, or Tellico file format, or imported
from Ant Movie Catalog or Tellico, among others. It currently manages
collections of movies and video games and lets users define their own
types of collections.

Changes: Bookmarks management has been added through the menu "My
Collections". A new "Advanced" search can be used to define a more
accurate query. The results of a Web search can be previewed. New plugins
for books using Amazon.de and Amazon.uk. New plugin for video games using
JeuxVideo.com provided by TPF.

[025] - GNOME Sudoku 0.7.0
  by tom (http://freshmeat.net/users/Thomas_Hinkle/)
  Mon, Oct 16th 2006 19:58

Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

About: GNOME Sudoku is a GNOME-based puzzle game based on Sudoku, a
popular Japanese logic game. It provides a simple interface for playing,
saving, printing, and solving Sudoku puzzles and generates symmetrical
puzzles with unique solutions. It features support for infinite undo, a
rating of the difficulty of games, and a memory of all games you play.

Changes: The bump in the version number indicates the new build system,
which will be of interest to packagers who will need to rework their
scripts (it now uses a standard autogen.sh->Makefile system). The new
build system is in preparation for GNOME Sudoku's pending inclusion in
gnome-games. This release also includes standard Docbook-style
documentation displayed in Yelp instead of the old custom FAQ display. It
includes an improved always-show-hints mode, which is very helpful in
solving difficult puzzles (it shows and updates possible values for all
empty squares).

[036] - LCDproc 0.5.1
  by Guillaume Filion (http://freshmeat.net/users/gfk/)
  Mon, Oct 16th 2006 19:23

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
Utilities

About: LCDproc is a utility to drive one or more LCD (and LCD-like)
devices attached to a host. It is comprised of a server, which uses a
modular device driver system to control attached displays, and one or more
clients to gather data as appropriate and send screen data to the server.
The included client displays a multitude of system statistics
(CPU/memory/disk usage, uptime, date and time, temperature, etc.).
Multiple clients can connect to the server simultaneously, and clients can
set priorities on the screens they provide to influence in what order items
are displayed. This facility can also be used to "pop" critical screens
(such as an entry from syslog from a log-watching client). All
functionality is implemented in userland. Support for many display devices
and several platforms (Linux, *BSD, and Solaris at least) is included.

Changes: LCDproc controls various LCD and VFD devices in a standardized
way on multiple platforms (Linux, *BSD, Darwin, and Solaris). Its
client/server model allows multiple systems/clients to use the same
display. In addition to the server LCDd, LCDproc ships with a client to
display various system statistics, a program starter client, a client to
show a virtual console on the LCD, and a few example clients.

and deleting couplers. Couplers allow notes played on one division to
sound also on the coupled divisions. 16', 8', and 4' pitch are supported.

stopped listening to the keyboard if SCIM was in use. This release disables
SCIM (only for OrganDesigner). Non-ASCII characters can still be input by
other methods, including the GNOME Character Map and Compose key
combinations.

[051] - PAM_Extern 0.2
  by blindCoder (http://freshmeat.net/users/blindcoder/)
  Mon, Oct 16th 2006 02:52

Security

About: PAM_Extern is a PAM module that hands the username and password to
an external application or shell script for further handling. The theory
is that while a lot of people might be able to create authentication
schemes, few are are able to do so using C and the PAM library.

Changes: pam_extern now passes the password as an environment variable
instead of on the command line. This prevents the password from showing up
in the output of "ps".

mode for each weapon in all "normal" gametypes as well as Warshell (battle
shield) and Warshock (quad damage) for team-based gametypes. Its
cartoonish graphics use cel shading with a style that is similar but not
identical to Manga.

Changes: Anti-lag code was tweaked. The exec command works even if you
don't specify the .cfg extension. Server-side duel demos now have player
names in the filename. The option to enable automatic team locking was
removed. Clients can now set a sending interval slower than the default.
Items that have targetname set are not visible anymore. There are many
bugfixes.

About: Wine is an implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix.
It does not require Microsoft Windows, but can use native Windows DLLs if
they are available. It provides both a development toolkit for porting
Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many
unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes.

Changes: The printf formats were updated for Win64 compatibility. Dynamic
drive support on Mac OS X was added. Still more MSI fixes and improvements
were done. Lots of bugs were fixed.

Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Build Tools

About: XINS is a technology used to define, create, and invoke remote
APIs. XINS is specification-oriented. When API specifications are written
(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.

Changes: This release improves the compatibility with Java 1.3. The
internal Servlet container is more compliant with the HTTP standard.
Several bugs have been fixed.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: The Yana Framework is a component framework for developing PHP
applications. It can be expanded with your own plugins (components). It
includes skin and template support, multiple languages (German and English
by default), mature administration functionality, multiple installation
profiles, user login and administration, a database API based on PEAR-DB
that also offers database schema support, and a GUI/code generator for
your own plugins. It also includes an easy to use query tool that
automatically maps database commands to a flat file if no database support
is available. Plugins provided with this software are a guestbook, an RSS
to HTML converter, and a search engine. Complete (German) documentation
is included.

Changes: This release comes with an automated tool that installs the
framework to your Web site and assists you during your first steps. In
addition, the database API now supports automated handling of table
inheritance and allows database structures to include each other
recursively. It also improves handling of structure files in "strict"
mode.
