Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

[014] - GNU CD Input and Control Library 0.78
  by R. Bernstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/rocky/)
  Fri, Oct 27th 2006 05:23

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
Multimedia :: Video
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The GNU Compact Disc Input and Control library encapsulates CD-ROM
reading and control for applications wishing to be oblivious to the OS-
and device-dependent properties of a CD-ROM. It provides an API for access
to SCSI-MMC (multimedia commands) and support for CD image types like
BIN/CUE, cdrdao's TOC, and Nero's NRG, which gives applications using the
library the ability to read disc images as though they were CDs. ISO-9660
filesystem support is included, as are utility programs for displaying CD
and CD-ROM drive information, reading the blocks of a CD, and extracting
files from an ISO-9660 filesytem image. cdparanoia is also included.

Changes: This release improves UTF-8 support, adds a commandline tool for
issuing some common multimedia commands (MMC), makes "eject" on GNU/Linux
unmount the drive when needed, and adds UDF support to extract file data
(at least for ICB strategy type 4).

  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Fri, Oct 27th 2006 10:57

Text Editors

About: GNU ed is a line-oriented text editor. It is used to create,
display, modify and otherwise manipulate text files, both interactively
and via shell scripts. A restricted version of 'ed', 'red', can only edit
files in the current directory, and cannot execute shell commands. ed is
the "standard" text editor in the sense that it is the original editor
for UNIX, and thus widely available. For most purposes, however, it is
superceded by full-screen editors such as Emacs, and Vi.

Changes: Some changes have been made to "configure" and "Makefile".
"configure" now accepts a "--version" option. The "i" command now works
with address 0 (zero). Some compatibility warnings have been fixed.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Libxml2 is the XML C library developed for the Gnome project. The
library code is portable (to Linux, Unix, Windows, embedded systems, etc.)
and modular; most of the extensions can be compiled out. Libxml2 implements
a number of existing standards related to markup languages, including the
XML standard, Namespaces in XML, XML Base, Relax NG, RFC 2396, XPath,
XPointer, HTML4, XInclude, SGML Catalogs, and XML Catalogs. In most cases,
libxml tries to implement the specifications in a relatively strict way. To
some extent, it provides support for the following specifications, but
doesn't claim to implement them: DOM, FTP client, HTTP client, and SAX2.
Support for W3C XML Schemas is in progress. It includes xmllint, a command

  Fri, Oct 27th 2006 11:02

Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

About: YasSS (Yet another (simple|stupid) Sudoku Solver) is a Sudoku
solver for the command line. It solves any Sudoku puzzle and generates
Sudoku puzzles. It can calculate the number of solutions, print a
difficulty rating, and generate a canonical form for a puzzle. It also
provides a curses interface for playing Sudoku.

Changes: This release fixes parsing of command line arguments that may
have lead to segfaults and might have been exploited.

[056] - Zapping VBI library 0.2.23
  by Michael H. Schimek (http://freshmeat.net/users/mschimek/)
  Fri, Oct 27th 2006 14:26

Multimedia :: Video

About: The Zapping VBI library provides routines to read from raw Vertical
Blanking Interval capture devices, to demodulate raw to sliced VBI data,
and to interpret the data of several popular services. Basically, it
offers all the functionality needed by a VBI application except for the
UI.

Changes: This version adds a few helper functions to convert Closed
Caption and UCS-2 strings. The raw VBI decoder was modified to handle a CC
signal with incorrect clock run-in. The zvbi-ntsc-cc tool can now decode
all caption channels simultaneously and filter XDS information.
