Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share
leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

[001] - Adcd 0.8-rc1 (Development)
by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
Sun, Nov 5th 2006 14:51
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Playing
About: Adcd is a text mode CD player for GNU/Linux. It features all the
functions expected in a compact disc player, including playing selected
tracks, random playing, and continuous playing. It may be used in
interactive (full screen) or non-interactive (command line) modes.
Changes: A bug that prevented the automatic advance to the next track in
playlist mode and loop mode with some drives has been fixed. "configure"
and "Makefile.in" have been modified to be more GNU standards compliant.

[002] - Asymptote 1.18
by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)
Sun, Nov 5th 2006 08:27
Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering
About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: A pen caching problem and clipping bugs were fixed. Bugs in
interactive mode and in line mode string reads were fixed. The drawing of
surface meshes was fixed. The labelx, labely, xtick, and ytick routines
respect the current graph scaling. The slide presentation package now
works with both latex and pdflatex; the colordvi dependency was removed.
Static variable allocation is now discussed in the FAQ. An image histogram
and contour example was added. The diatom example was modified to
illustrate the interaction of fixed-sized and scaled coordinates.

Sun, Nov 5th 2006 05:45
About: autocutsel synchronizes the two copy/paste buffers mainly used by X
applications. It unifies "clipboards" between VNC servers and Windows.
Changes: A bug which occurred on 64-bit systems has been fixed. A
workaround for OpenOffice.org writer has been implemented. A compilation
problem on NetBSD has been fixed. A test suite has been added.

by Scarfy (http://freshmeat.net/users/Scarfy/)
Sun, Nov 5th 2006 05:37
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade
About: Blob Wars : Blob and Conquer is a 3rd person action shooter. With
the apparent defeat of Galdov and the reclaiming of the Fire, Time, Space,
and Reality Crystals, the Blobs' battle was only just beginning. Bob had
rescued many Blobs and fought many battles, but now he had an ever bigger
task ahead of him. The Blobs' homeworld is still littered with the alien
forces and Bob once again makes it his task to lead the counter attack.
But even without Galdov the aliens are still extremely well organised.
Changes: All item and weapon models were added and textured. Some minor
level bugs were fixed. The game now has support for languages other than
English. Miscellaneous bugs were fixed throughout the code.

Sun, Nov 5th 2006 06:05
Database
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Generator is a command line application to facilitate the
construction of small applications that need some database objects. It
isn't a replacement for complex object persistence solutions, like
hibernate or TopLink, but it covers a different target: the little Java
Web applications that don't use sophisticated persistence options.
Generator invocation is simple: just type java -jar generator.jar -xml,
where the config file is an XML config file with the definitions to
connect to the database and generate the bean classes. You can also use
the Ant task.
Changes: Initial support for Firebird and MS SQL Server was added. The
MySQL driver was updated to version 5.0.4.

[018] - ipcam 0.4
by Sebastian Dehne (http://freshmeat.net/users/sebdehne/)
Sun, Nov 5th 2006 14:53
Home Automation
About: ipcam is a motion detection and recording program for IP cameras.
It reads a JPEG stream from the IP camera and tries to detect motion by
comparing the images to each other and calculating differences in
brightness and color. Once motion is detected, ipcam switches to recording
mode and stores the JPEG images in separate files in a new directory. When
recording is finished and no more motion is detected, ipcam can start an
external program for further processing on the JPEG files.
Changes: Thanks to iniparser, ipcam now gets its configuration from an
external ini file. It is easier to run several ipcam processes on one
host. In order to reduce CPU load, you can configure how many frames
should be skipped in motion detection mode.

[030] - Long Range ZIP 0.18
by Con Kolivas (http://freshmeat.net/users/conman/)
Sun, Nov 5th 2006 18:04
System :: Archiving :: Compression
About: LRZIP is a compression program that can achieve very high
compression ratios and speed when used with large files. It uses the
combined compression algorithms of lzma for maximum compression, lzo for
maximum speed, and the long range redundancy reduction of rzip. It is
designed to scale with increases with RAM size, improving compression
further. A choice of either size or speed optimizations allows for either
better compression than even lzma can provide, or better speed than gzip,
but with bzip2 sized compression levels.
Changes: Blocks to be compressed by lzma are now scanned by lzo in advance
to find incompressible data and bypass attempting to compress them. This
speeds up substantially attempting to compress incompressible files, and
should fix the "lzma getting stuck on an incompressible block" bug. Basic
Darwin support was added. Compression mode was stratified for lower levels
of lzma compression.

Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers
About: Mapivi is a cross-platform picture manager / organizer, viewer, and
batch processor. It is able to display and edit JPEG meta-information,
including IPTC/IIM information, EXIF data, and embedded comments. Pictures
can be organized by adding them to virtual folders (using hierarchical
keywords). It also serves as a frontend for performing lossless rotation,
lossless cropping, resizing, and filtering, and can display images as
thumbnails. It has a fast and powerful picture search feature that can
search in all picture meta-information.
Changes: This release is up to ten times faster when reading in a
directory and displaying thumbnails. It provides browsing pictures by
timeline and by keyword/tag cloud. It will detect new IPTC keywords in
pictures, and asks to add them to the keyword catalog. A color chooser
widget and a color picker have been added. Searching for duplicate
pictures and restoring pictures from the trash has been improved. Some
other minor features have been added and bugs have been fixed.

[034] - mp3fs transcoding FUSE filesystem 0.04
by David Collett (http://freshmeat.net/users/daveco/)
Sun, Nov 5th 2006 04:27
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion
System :: Filesystems
About: MP3FS is a read-only FUSE filesystem that transcodes FLAC audio
files to MP3 on the fly when opened and read. It is useful to enable the
use of your FLAC collection with software and/or hardware that only
understands MP3s. It is also a novel alternative to traditional MP3
encoder applications. Just use your favorite file browser to select the
files you want encoded, and copy them somewhere.
Changes: This is a minor update which adds support for the upcoming flac
1.1.3 release. This release also adds support for year and genre ID3 tags,
which were missing in the last release. Complete ID3 support will require
linking a dedicated id3 library, but this may be supported in the future.

About: mp3togo loads MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, m4a, and WAV files on to a
portable MP3 player by decoding them (if required) and reencoding in a
consistent lower bitrate MP3 (or Vorbis) format. The idea is to take music
from a library of diverse archival quality encodings and convert it to a
space efficient format playable on a portable device. mp3togo will run as
a stand alone program, or can be imported as Python modules to use its
components in another program. The package installs a command line
executable named mp3togo in /usr/bin.
Changes: This release fixes a tagging bug for FLAC files, and fixes the

[036] - mpt-status 1.2.0
by Roberto Nibali (http://freshmeat.net/users/rnibali_ratz/)
Sun, Nov 5th 2006 05:51
System :: Diagnostics
System :: Hardware
System :: Monitoring
About: mpt-status is a query tool for accessing the running configuration
and status of LSI SCSI HBAs. It is a heavily modified version of the
original mpt-status-1.0 tool written by Matt Braithwaite. It allows you to
monitor the health and status of your RAID setup. Currently supported and
tested HBAs are the LSI 1030 SCSI RAID storage controller and LSI SAS1064
SCSI RAID storage controller. Since the tool uses the MPI (message passing
interface), chances are high that the basic information regarding RAID
status will be available for all LSI-based controllers.
Changes: This is the first release with proper 64-bit support and mostly
clean interface querying. The mpt-status(8) man page has been added.
Preliminary work has been done on integrating S.M.A.R.T information in the
report output. This would allow one to monitor for failing hardware and
preemptively replace it without business interruption. This information
can be queried via the --newstyle/-n parameter. The new style parameter
also provides you with the percentage status of the synchronization after
a degradation.

[042] - Pinot 0.62
by Fabrice Colin (http://freshmeat.net/users/colinf/)
Sun, Nov 5th 2006 04:42
About: Pinot is a D-Bus service that crawls, indexes your documents, and
monitors them for changes. It is also a GTK-based user interface that
enables you to query the index built by the service or your favorite Web
engine, and display and analyze the results. It makes full use of advanced
indexing and search facilities offered by Xapian, features language
detection, dynamic document summaries, easy labelling of documents, and
internal support for common file types. The D-Bus interface allows easy
integration with other applications.
Changes: A major bug where the daemon would loop endlessly when reindexing
MP3 and Ogg files was fixed. Label and directory filters were sometimes not
applied correctly. Preferences now allow the user to set glob patterns for
files that should be excluded from crawling and indexing. Support for the
upcoming libtextcat 3.0 was implemented. A few other fixes were made to

it could also be used by local or private servers.
Changes: A MySQL storage backend was added, so now the spool can be
handled through a MySQL server. A "state" command was added, which allows
you to close or disable the filter. A forbidden crosspost rule was added,
