[002] - AFNIX programming language 1.4.0
  by Amaury C. Darsch (http://freshmeat.net/users/amaury/)
  Mon, Nov 6th 2006 16:25

Software Development :: Interpreters

About: AFNIX is a multi-threaded functional programming language with
dynamic symbol bindings that support the object oriented paradigm. It has
a rich set of features providing runtime compatibility with C++. The
engine runs on both 32- and 64-bit platforms, and it is designed to be
portable across platforms.

Changes: This release incorporates a major restructuring to support the
latest Unicode 5.0 standard. The object model has been enhanced with an
instance inference (aka virtual constructor) mechanism. The standard
library has new objects like the property list. A new XML module with a
full 1.0 and 1.1 parser is now natively incorporated. A new concept of
service module is also being deployed starting with the "Web application
management service module" built on top of the xml module. This service
module makes the www module obsolete.

[007] - ATA over Ethernet driver 39 (For Linux 2.6)
  by Ed Cashin at Coraid (http://freshmeat.net/users/ecashinCoraid/)
  Mon, Nov 6th 2006 13:59

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet
(AoE) network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block
devices like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as
local device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).

Changes: The device list can now be cleaned up by giving the aoe driver a
"flush" command. A bugfix eliminates some "runt packet" error messages. A
greater number of local AoE interfaces is now supported. Unaligned memory
accesses are avoided. The udev rules were updated for compatibility with
current versions of udev.

  Mon, Nov 6th 2006 14:07

Internet
Printing
Software Development :: Libraries

About: CUPS provides a portable printing layer for Unix(r)-based operating
systems. It has been developed to promote a standard printing solution for
all Unix vendors and users. CUPS provides the System V and Berkeley
command line interfaces, and uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP")
as the basis for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon
(LPD) Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect)
protocols are also supported with reduced functionality. CUPS adds network
printer browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing
options to support real world printing under UNIX. It includes an image
file RIP that supports printing of image files to non-PostScript printers.
A customized version of GNU Ghostscript 7.05 for CUPS called ESP
Ghostscript is available separately to support printing of PostScript
files within the CUPS driver framework. Sample drivers for Dymo, EPSON,
HP, and OKIDATA printers are included that use these filters.

Changes: This release fixes some compile errors, localization of the Web
interface on Mac OS X, bugs in the lpc and lpstat commands, and
backchannel support in the parallel backend.

  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Mon, Nov 6th 2006 04:21

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwknop implements an authorization scheme that requires only a
single encrypted packet to communicate various pieces of information,
including desired access through a Netfilter policy and/or specific
commands to execute on the target system. The main application of this
program is to protect services such as SSH with an additional layer of
security in order to make the exploitation of vulnerabilities much more
difficult. The authorization server works by passively monitoring
authorization packets via libpcap.

Changes: The OpenSSH-4.3p2 patch was fixed to make sure to include the
spa.h header file. Access hashes accumluating when multiple ports are
requested to be opened by a client were fixed. Validation of the
IPT_AUTO_CHAIN variable was improved so that the from_chain cannot be
identical to the to_chain. A bug in which the MD5 sum for an SPA packet is
not examined for each SOURCE block was fixed. This fixes a problem where an
SPA packet could appear to be replayed if multiple SOURCE blocks are
defined in /etc/fwknop/access.conf. The main SPA access loop was
refactored so that it is clearer how and when SPA clients are granted
access.

[023] - GNU Transport Layer Security Library 1.4.5
  by Simon Josefsson (http://freshmeat.net/users/jas4711/)
  Mon, Nov 6th 2006 06:44

Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries

About: GNU Transport Layer Security Library is a library which implements
a secure layer over a reliable transport layer such as TCP/IP. It
implements the TLS 1.1 and SSL 3.0 protocols, accompanied with
authentication methods such as X.509, OpenPGP, and SRP.

Changes: When a GnuTLS server receives a SSLv2 client hello for an unknown
TLS version, it now tries to negotiate the highest version supported by the
GnuTLS server, instead of the lowest. A typographical error in
doc/examples/ex-serv-pgp.c was fixed.

[027] - Java Parallel Processing Framework 0.23.1
  by Laurent Cohen (http://freshmeat.net/users/lolocohen/)
  Mon, Nov 6th 2006 06:50

Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: JPPF is a computational grid framework for Java focused on
performance and ease of use. It provides a set of tools and APIs to enable
the parallelization of CPU intensive applications, and distribute their
execution over a network of heterogenous nodes. It features platform
independence thanks to Java 1.5, does not require you to deploy your
application classes to a server, scales up to millions of nodes, has a
built-in fail-over mechanism on all the framework's components, and has a
monitoring and administration GUI tool to enable remote monitoring of the
server health and server shutdown/restart operations.

Changes: An issue was fixed in the adaptive scheduling algorithm, which
caused the tasks to be executed by only one node at a time. The
performance of the scheduling algorithm was improved, resulting in a
smaller execution overhead. Minor localization issues were fixed in the
administration tool.

[041] - Mr. Persister 3.5.10-beta
  by Jakob Jenkov (http://freshmeat.net/users/jjenkov/)
  Mon, Nov 6th 2006 06:27

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Mr. Persister is a POJO persistence API for Java. The main focus of
Mr. Persister is to handle all the trivial JDBC work, and leave the
non-trivial parts up to you. It uses plain SQL as the query language, it
can auto-map objects to the database, and it can generate SQL for a lot of
trivial tasks by itself (such as insert, update, and delete). Mr. Persister
also has support for easy batch updates of collections of objects,
connection and transaction handling, and many other features.

Changes: Four convenience methods on the PersistenceManager now makes it a
bit easier/shorter to execute DAO commands. The JDBC DAO now has a
readIdString method that can read a ResultSet of IDs into a (id1, id2,
..) string that can be appended to another SQL query's "...where id in"
clause. The JavaDoc has been updated for all new features.

About: MySQL High Availability clustering is a set of scripts and
programs that provide a high availability database cluster using MySQL
replication. It is transparent to client applications, as the cluster
uses a shared logical IP to provide the service.

Changes: This release fixes setup_replication.sh: replicate.do.db wasn't
being generated properly due to a hardcoded MySQL password; replication
slave privileges didn't always work due to the hostname not being used in

[063] - Seed7 2006-11-06
  by Thomas Mertes (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomas_mertes/)
  Mon, Nov 6th 2006 14:03

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements
and operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.

Changes: The hi interpreter was improved to support bigInteger literals.
Changes have been made to allow a configurable bigdigit size (Bigdigits
are the building elements of a bigInteger). The mdiv function was added to
the bigInteger library and the chkbig.sd7 program. The chkbig.sd7 program
was changed to use bigInteger literals. Several bigInteger functions have
been improved. A bigrat.s7i include file to support bigRational numbers
has been added. The compiler support for bigInteger, setBaselit, and
strTrim has been improved.

[065] - Simple XML Framework 0.9.5
  by Niall Gallagher (http://freshmeat.net/users/niallg/)
  Mon, Nov 6th 2006 14:02

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Simple is an XML serialization framework for Java. Its goal is to
provide an XML framework that enables rapid development of XML
configuration and communication systems. This framework aids the
development of XML systems with minimal effort and reduced errors. The
framework borrows ideas and concepts from existing XML tools such as C#
XML serialization and other proprietary frameworks, and combines those
ideas resulting in a simple yet extremely powerful tool for using and
manipulating XML.

Changes: Changes were made to enable dynamic XML templating variables.
Persister callbacks have been implemented, which allows deserialized XML
to be validated and processed. Custom strategies are now possible, which
enables serialized XML to be customized.
