[008] - dvipng 1.9
by Jan-Åke Larsson (http://freshmeat.net/users/jalar/)
Sat, Nov 11th 2006 14:36
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX
About: dvipng makes PNG or GIF graphics from DVI files obtained from TeX
and its relatives. Its benefits include speed; it uses very fast
bitmap-rendering code for DVI files. Furthermore, it does not read the
postamble, so it can be started before TeX finishes. It supports PK, VF,
PostScript Type1 (via FreeType or t1lib), and TrueType fonts (via
FreeType), color specials, can render CJK fonts, and more.
Changes: This release adds CJK (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) support.
More specifically, it adds support for the subfonts used in the CJK-latex
package. TrueType fonts have been tested somewhat more, and the
ttfonts.map file is now used, if present on the system. It also fixes a
few bugs, most notably a version problem with Freetype < 2.1.8 and a
graphics inclusion bug for non-.-paths.

media players) like automatic fetching of album art, handling of large
libraries, lyrics fetching, artist/album information via the wikipedia,
last.fm support, and optional iPod support (assuming you have python-gpod
installed). In addition, it includes a built in shoutcast directory
browser, tabbed playlists (so you can have more than one playlist open at
a time), blacklisting of tracks (so they don't get scanned into your
library), downloading of guitar tablature from fretplay.com, and
submitting played tracks on your iPod to last.fm.

Sat, Nov 11th 2006 23:10
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
About: JayOS is a live CD distro intended for use as a more secure mobile
environment. It integrates in-RAM filesystem encryption with plausible
deniability for a system that can be difficult to alter without
rebuilding. This offers a user with a high degree of data integrity; since
all filesystems are either static or encrypted, the system is resistant to
physical attacks. Features 2.6 kernel, unionfs, many network security and
filesystem tools, UML, and QEMU. It runs well on low-end x86 hardware, and
requires only 128MB RAM and a bootable CD drive to get started. There is
some PowerPC support. Also included is standard desktop software. It is
based on Linux From Scratch.
Changes: The demo page has been updated with two new videos. A new kernel
parameter, "addons", will prompt for a password, which could be used to
decrypt data hidden within the structure of the root ext2 filesystem.
Instructions are given on how to create and manipulate your own hidden
filesystems. Source code is now available through a subversion repository,
and building instructions have been updated.

About: minb (Minb Is Not a Blog) is a content management system that makes
it possible to share Moments with others or just log them for your own use.
The data is stored in XML-format and does not require a database. Its
design is extremely modular and it supports read-only accounts for
sensitive data. The engine is equally fit to be used as a blog, a personal
homepage framework, or a publicly accessible information site concentrating
on news or project coordination.
Changes: New features include an installer, AJAX code, an optional
BSD-licensed WYGIWYS-editor, an option to upload a picture, and tags. The
library for XML parsing was changed to one with a BSD-like license. The
format of storing the entries using CDATA was changed, removing the
problems with special characters (Cyrillic, quotes, etc.). Each entry is
saved in a separate file, avoiding some previous conflicts. The default
theme was changed to one that is basicaly compatible with IE6. The

prevents proper identification of open TCP ports. It also gives protection
against dsniff tcpkill RST packets by dropping them. More testing is
needed to prevent breakage of network applications. It can identify most
operating systems by their SYN characteristics.
Changes: Wafter has been ported to NetBSD as a kernel patch. It now
supports identification of most operating systems.

[030] - shmplayer 0.0.3
by Alpt (http://freshmeat.net/users/Alpt/)

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3
About: Shmplayer executes a single instance of mplayer in the background
and controls it through a FIFO. It supports many of the features you'll
find in XMMS and it is easily extendible. However, unlike XMMS, shmplayer
doesn't require an X server to be active. You can even use it from a
remote shell. Shmplayer has also some unique features like "jgrep" that
lets you jump to the first "grepped" match of the playlist.
Changes: The "jcgrep" command has been added. It jumps to the first
matched entry of the current playlist. It's useful to skip to the next
match. Some regular expression bugs were fixed.

Information Management
Information Management :: Document Repositories
About: SiSU (Structured information, Serialized Units) is a command line
driven document creation and management framework. With minimal markup of
a plaintext file, it produces: plain-text, HTML, XHTML, XML, ODF
(OpenDocument), LaTeX, PDF, and populates an SQL database (PostgreSQL or
SQLite) at an object/paragraph level for "atomic searches". Prepare
documents using your text editor of choice, then use SiSU to generate the
desired output formats. Vim 7 provides syntax highlighting for SiSU
markup. (For earlier versions, a syntax highlighting file is provided).

[034] - SRESI 0.14.5
by Priscus (http://freshmeat.net/users/priscus/)
Sat, Nov 11th 2006 23:12
Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
About: SRESI is a smart bookmark manager. It currently sports both a
command-line and a PHP interface. It works with both the standard
hierarchical trees and the new and fashionable tagged bookmarks. It was
developed as a way to interface both representation systems. SRESI can use
Del.icio.us, Mozilla, Opera, and XBEL bookmarks, and handles a few more
exports besides. Directories and tags are used equivalently, and the final
hierarchies are inferred from actual tag use.
Changes: The tag renaming function did not actually work when applied to
the whole bookmark set, though it appeared to when checked through tree or
portal views. This problem has been fixed.

Games/Entertainment
About: Statfink is a Fantasy (American) Football statistics tracker and
live scoring program that is best suited for working with leagues hosted
at Yahoo!. It is meant to be run by one member of the league so that the
rest of the members can view the output.
Changes: A quick fix was done to adapt to the change in Yahoo's player
name format that happened on 9 November 2006. This is a critical fix, and
all users need to update to get their installations to work at all.

[036] - Stunnel 4.19
by Michal Trojnara (http://freshmeat.net/users/mtrojnar/)
Sat, Nov 11th 2006 14:23
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking
About: The stunnel program is designed to work as an SSL encryption
wrapper between remote client and local (inetd-startable) or remote
server. It can be used to add SSL functionality to commonly used inetd
daemons like POP2, POP3, and IMAP servers without any changes in the
programs' code. It will negotiate an SSL connection using the OpenSSL or
SSLeay libraries. It calls the underlying crypto libraries, so stunnel
supports whatever cryptographic algorithms you compiled into your crypto
package.
Changes: Several new features were added, including OCSP flags, NTLM
authentication for CONNECT proxies, and IMAP protocol support. The main
transfer() function was rewritten to avoid empty loops.

[037] - Task Coach 0.61.2
by Frank Niessink (http://freshmeat.net/users/fniessink/)
Sat, Nov 11th 2006 14:35
Office/Business :: Scheduling
About: Task Coach is a simple todo manager to manage personal tasks and
todo lists. It grew out of a frustration that well-known task managers,
such as those provided with Outlook or Lotus Notes, do not provide
facilities for composite tasks. Often, tasks and other things to do
consist of several activities. Task Coach is designed to deal with
composite tasks.
Changes: This release fixes a couple of bugs. Using non-ASCII characters
in category subjects would trigger an exception. Deleting a task would not
delete the task from the categories to which it belonged, resulting in
errors upon next loading of the task file.

[041] - XMLSysInfo 0.98.22
by Moritz Grimm (http://freshmeat.net/users/mgrimm/)
Sat, Nov 11th 2006 14:31
System :: Diagnostics
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: XSI is an easy-to-use, secure, and comprehensive system monitoring
daemon that replies to network queries with XML-encoded system information
and statistics. This data can then be analyzed, graphed, or otherwise
presented by a front-end.
Changes: Valuable feedback from front-end authors was incorporated into
this release. Many changes to the output and an improved, more strict XML
Schema made the output significantly more consistent and logical. Other
important cleanups also made it into this release, such as making it work
with gcc 2.95 again, banning invalidating characters from XML output, and
speeding up the configuration of the software at compile-time. Note that
the new XML Schema no longer validates output from older versions.
