[002] - 4tH compiler 3.5a
  by J.L. Bezemer (http://freshmeat.net/users/hansoft/)
  Sun, Nov 12th 2006 05:03

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries

About: 4tH is a Forth compiler with a little difference. Instead of the
standard Forth engine it features a conventional compiler. 4tH is a very
small compiler that can create bytecode, C-embeddable bytecode, standalone
executables, but also works fine as a scripting language. It supports over
85% of the ANS Forth CORE wordset and features conditional compilation,
pipes, files, assertions, forward declarations, enumerations, structures,
suspended execution, recursion, include files, etc. It comes with an RPN
calculator, line editor, compiler, decompiler, C-source generators, and a
virtual machine.

Changes: The execution of a 4tH program can be suspended. A suspended 4tH
program can be saved and reloaded. A 4tH program can be embedded in a MS
batch file. User defined words can be made private. User defined words can
be aliased. User defined terminal input buffers are supported. A complete,
ANS-Forth compatible redesign was done of all string handling words.
Multiple WHILEs are supported with REPEAT, AGAIN, and UNTIL. Support for
structures and enumerations has been added. Files can now be opened in
read/write mode. File pointers can be interrogated and repositioned.
Limited DOES> support has been added.

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Software Development :: Bug Tracking

About: AgileTrack is an agile development planning and iteration tracking
tool. It assists in the creation and life-cycle of iterations, projects,
stories, tasks, and bugs. It is focused on simplicity and practicality.
Its interface is designed to be useful specifically for software
developers on small development teams with rapidly-changing priorities and
requirements. Its primary interface for developers is geared toward
availability, speed, and purpose. It is flexible and minimalistic with
respect to the data that is required for records. It is designed to be
compatible with agile development methodologies, particularly Extreme
Programming.

Changes: Time tracking has been revamped. Each issue has an individual
time log where hours can be added, removed, and modified. Time estimate
precision has been increased. A new time selection widget was created.
Total hours for an issue can be modified independent of the time log.
Issues, iterations, projects, and releases are now color coded to indicate
the status of the item: green means being prepared, black mean in-progress,
and red means complete. The interface has also been fixed to work better
with different look-and-feel variations.

[005] - AMIDI-Plug 0.7
  by Giacomo Lozito (http://freshmeat.net/users/city_hunter/)
  Sun, Nov 12th 2006 22:00

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: MIDI
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: AMIDI-Plug is a MIDI subsystem for XMMS, BMP, and Audacious. It
processes MIDI files and sends their events to one of the available
backends (currently ALSA, FluidSynth, dummy). With the ALSA backend, any
hardware or software synthesizer, as long as it provides ALSA sequence
ports, can be used to play MIDI with AMIDI-Plug. With the FluidSynth
backend, AMIDI-Plug directly accesses the FluidSynth library for MIDI
playback and sends the generated audio into effect and output plugins of
the player. A dummy backend is also provided for testing and analysis
purposes. Playback is fully functional: play, stop, seek, pause, song
information are available.

Changes: This release introduces a couple of new playback options: a
transposer to play MIDI files in different keys, and a drum shifter to
change percussion. It uses the Audacious VFS API to load files.

  Sun, Nov 12th 2006 04:59

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: Blossoc is a linkage disequilibrium association mapping tool that
attempts to build (perfect) genealogies for each site in the input, score
these according to non-random clustering of affected individuals, and
judge high-scoring areas as likely candidates for containing disease
affecting variation. Building the local genealogy trees is based on a
number of heuristics that are not guaranteed to build true trees, but have
the advantage over more sophisticated methods of being extremely fast.
Blossoc can therefore handle much larger data sets than more sophisticated
tools, but at the cost of sacrificing some accuracy.

Changes: This version provides functionality for quantitative trait
mapping and for mapping pairs of genes in presence of epistatsis.

Text Processing :: General
Text Processing :: Linguistic

About: CharEntry is a tool for inserting non-ASCII characters into text,
with particular emphasis on linguistic notation. It provides charts of the
consonants, vowels, and diacritics of the International Phonetic Alphabet
as well as a chart of precomposed accented characters. Clicking on a
character inserts it into a text region, the contents of which may be
saved to a file or copied and pasted elsewhere. A widget for inserting
characters by Unicode codepoint is also provided. Furthermore, it is
possible to read the definition of a custom character chart from a file.

Changes: A number of characters have been added to the accented letter

[038] - LCD-Linux 0.11.0
  by Mattia Jona (http://freshmeat.net/users/mjona/)
  Sun, Nov 12th 2006 05:10

System :: Hardware

About: LCD-Linux is a Linux software abstraction layer to drive LCD
alphanumeric displays. It features complete VT102 console emulation and
aims to be as general and flexible as possible. It consists of two kernel
modules, lcd-linux and the display driver. Currently, only the Hitachi
HD44780 is supported, but drivers for other LCD controllers can be easily
written.

Changes: This release features a virtual screen abstraction, allowing for
larger screen sizes, independently of the real size of the LCD attached to
the system running LCD-Linux. The implementation takes care to always keep
the cursor in the visible area of the LCD and to scroll whenever the
cursor exits the visible screen area. One possible application is to use a
tiny display as a sytem console by defining a virtual screen size of 25
rows by 80 columns.

[039] - libRUIN 0.1.3
  by Julian Graham (http://freshmeat.net/users/joolean/)
  Sun, Nov 12th 2006 22:20

Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: libRUIN (Renderer for User Interfaces in Ncurses) is a rendering
library for various XML-based user interface markup languages (such as
Mozilla XUL), using the Ncurses terminal control library as a rendering
target. GNU Guile and the SDOM Scheme module are used as the "glue" that
manages user input and event handling. An application programmer passes an
XML document (including, potentially, a set of CSS stylesheets) and an
Ncurses WINDOW structure, and libRUIN paints the WINDOW according to the
markup and CSS. The programmer may subsequently pass Ncurses-style input
strings to that WINDOW via libRUIN, and libRUIN will handle the resulting
event flows.

Changes: This release includes significant improvements over 0.1.2,
including, but not limited to improved text layout and rendering, Mac OS X
support, numerous CSS inheritance fixes, support for CSS pseudo-classes,
and proper handling for terminal resizing. There's also an expanded suite
of examples that demonstrate libRUIN's XHTML rendering capabilities.

Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)

About: Moodle is a learning management system for producing Internet-based
course Web sites. It is written in PHP and is easy to install and use on
Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, SunOS, BSD, and Netware 6. It has been designed
to support modern pedagogies based on social constructionist theory, and
includes activity modules such as forums, chats, resources, journals,
quizzes, surveys, choices, workshops, glossaries, lessons, and
assignments. It has been translated into over 70 languages, with more on
the way, and supports the popular SCORM standard for content packaging.
Moodle offers a free alternative to commercial software such as WebCT or
Blackboard, and is being used by a growing number of universities,
schools, and independent teachers for distance education or to supplement
face-to-face teaching.

Changes: The four big headline features are Roles (a complete new
architecture for assigning people permissions), the XML database schema
(which now supports a wider range of databases), a new admin interface
(designed to make it much easier to find settings and configure Moodle
properly), and the Unit testing framework (which allows developers to
write unit tests that can be run as part of a system check to make sure
Moodle code is performing as expected).

About: PhpPeanuts is a framework for model-driven development (MDD) in PHP
4 and 5. With MDD, you do not build an application from the bottom up.

you extend and refine step by step until it meets your demands. Unlike
model-driven architecture (MDA), the design is not specified in a
complicated CASE tool with myriad diagrams. It's simply expressed in PHP
code. phpPeanuts features polymorphic persistency, navigational queries,

[053] - Simple persistence for Java 2.0.0
  by Robert (http://freshmeat.net/users/demonofthesystem/)
  Sun, Nov 12th 2006 11:11

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Simple persistence for Java is a full featured, powerful
object/relational persistence and query library. It has a unique
philosophy of simpleness and ease of use: it does not require config
files, annotations, code generation, code "enhancing", or any kind of
tools to be used, not even the database interface itself. It handles
simple Java beans and its query service returns lists. Despite its
simpleness, under the hood the library takes care of all the necessary
logic: transaction visibility, result list paging, keys and ids, table
creation/modification, class relations, inheritance/polymorphism, case
sensitiveness, and much more. It currently supports: Oracle, MySQL, and
PostgreSQL.

Changes: The focus of this release was optimizing and preparing for
real-world usage. The query service was optimized, so count statements are
only run when there is no other way to know the full count of the result.
Selecting related objects to a result list now requires only one
additional select, instead of a select for each result separately. A
result cache was added that adapts to usage and speeds up redundant or
common selects.

  by Philippe Kehl (http://freshmeat.net/users/phkehl/)
  Sun, Nov 12th 2006 17:16

Home Automation
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: SlimServer on DiskStation is an add-on package to the Synology
DiskStation family of PowerPC based NAS devices providing the environment
to run SlimDevice's SlimServer on it. It integrates into the DS
administrative Web interface and comes with various user-friendly tools
and scripts to maintain the installation. It furthermore provides the
ability to download podcasts into the music library and tools to manage
playlists.

Changes: Besides small code cleanups, this release features revised
documentation and two new features. One allows a seamless upgrade of SSODS
without touching the installed SlimServer and its database. The other
allows users to add their own routines to the Web interface, and includes
the ability to have user level configuration files. There is no change in
how SlimServer runs or performs. However, the documentation includes some
pointers on how to decrease the memory usage of SlimServer and MySQL,
which may help to improve performance.

[055] - smtp-vilter 1.3.4
  by micro systems (http://freshmeat.net/users/msys/)
  Sun, Nov 12th 2006 06:55

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Security

About: smtp-vilter is a high-performance content filter for sendmail,
which detects email viruses and spam. It can pass, discard, or simply mark
an email based on the results of a content scan. It relies on third-party
products for the actual content scan. It uses the milter API to
communicate with sendmail, and backends to communicate with the actual
scanning engines. The backends can be chained to perform a series of
checks on each message in one run.

Changes: Statistics functions and support for Postfix were added.

About: SpadFS is an attempt to combine features of advanced filesystems
(crash recovery, fast directories, etc.) and good performance without
increasing code complexity too much. It uses crash counts instead of
journaling (because journaling is too complex and bug-prone), and uses
hash instead of btrees for directory organization.

[062] - Virtual Machine Manager 0.2.6
  by Daniel Berrange (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielpb/)
  Sun, Nov 12th 2006 22:24

System :: Systems Administration

About: The Virtual Machine Manager (virt-manager for short) is a desktop
application for managing virtual machines. Since it uses libvirt, it is
capable of managing machines from any hypervisor supported by libvirt. Xen
is the current primary target. The application's views provide summaries
and detailed statistics on performance and resource utilization. A wizard
facilitates creation of new guest domains, both para-virtualized and
fully-virtualized. Console access is enabled either to a text based serial
console or fully graphical access via an embedded VNC client.

Changes: The release focus is on major bugfixes. This is also the first
release in which (partial) translations are available for the UI in
approximately 20 languages. It is now possible to control the virt-manager
UI with command line arguments as well as the DBus API. When starting
virt-manager, DBus activation is no longer used by default. This fixes
interaction with the GNOME keyring and AT-SPI accessibility support.

[064] - WindowLab 1.34
  by Nick Gravgaard (http://freshmeat.net/users/nickgravgaard/)
  Sun, Nov 12th 2006 17:17

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers

About: WindowLab is a small and simple window manager of novel design. It
has a click-to-focus but not raise-on-focus policy, a window resizing
mechanism that allows one or many edges of a window to be changed in one
action, and an innovative menubar that shares the same part of the screen
as the taskbar. Window titlebars are prevented from going off the edge of
the screen by constraining the mouse pointer. When appropriate, the
pointer is also constrained to the taskbar/menubar in order to make target
menu items easier to hit.

Changes: If no window has focus, focus is now given to new windows, and if
the focused window is closed and no previous window has ever had focus,
focus is given to the first client. Fonts are now closed properly on exit,
some compiler warnings were fixed, changes were made to the Makefile, and
many other miscellaneous changes were made.
