Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: @Mail is a fully-featured WebMail server, allowing users to send
and receive email via a Web browser or WAP device. It has full support for
IMAP/POP3 mailboxes, and an optional email-server mode that uses Exim as
the MTA. Features include a scheduler, MySQL backend support, spell-check,
addressbook, user preferences, multiple accounts, Spamassassin support,
migration scripts from other mail servers, a customizable interface, an
attractive DHTML interface, an optional group Calendar/Addressbook, an
Outlook 2000/2003 plugin to sync Contacts/Tasks/Calendar data between a
desktop client and Webmail.

Changes: @Mail is now fully ported to PHP from Perl and includes all the
features in this release, such as video-mail support, an improved AJAX

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: AstroCam is an C-based Stepmotor Controlsystem including a PHP Web
interface. You can use it for controlling webcams over the
Internet/intranet or everything else you want to do with a stepmotor.

Changes: Some improvements in install.sh were made. The Linux version is
now checked by astrocam at compile time so that the user does not need to
edit the header file by hand. A small memory leak was fixed. The astrocam
daemon now checks for symlink attacks and uses better permissions for the
PID file. The Web interface has better error handling and exits on errors.
The documentation was improved.

About: Blitz templates is a fast template engine written in C and compiled
as a PHP module. It started as a php_templates replacement, but developed
into much more. It is based on extensible template controllers (custom
view classes in PHP) and weakly-active templates (simple logic in HTML).

Changes: A syntax warning for HTML comments in alternative context format
mode (<!-- BEGIN ctx --> ... <!-- END ctx -->) was fixed.

[005] - CanIt 3.4.0 (Pro)
  by David F. Skoll (http://freshmeat.net/users/dskoll/)
  Wed, Feb 28th 2007 13:23

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: CanIt is a server-based spam-control system built around
SpamAssassin, MIMEDefang, Apache, and PostgreSQL. It features
sophisticated spam-handling techniques which minimize the amount of spam
you receive while guaranteeing that you'll never lose a valid email. CanIt
achieves extraordinarily accurate discrimination through human
intervention, and includes mechanisms to minimize the amount of human
intervention required.

Changes: The old "Access Rights" page is gone. In its place are far more
flexible "Permissions" pages that allow fine-grained control over
permissions on a per-user and per-group basis. Hit-and-Run (also known as
"Greylisting") can be enabled on a per-stream basis. The old "Stream
Redirection" concept has been replaced by "Stream Inheritance". This is
more flexible and simplifies the code a lot. A new caching scheme has
reduced the number of database queries per email substantially, sometimes
by more than 50%.

  Wed, Feb 28th 2007 16:20

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
System :: Boot
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions

About: Cobbler is a command line tool for configuring provisioning and
update servers. It supports provisioning via PXE, virtualization (Xen),
and re-provisioning an existing Linux system ("auto-kickstarting") when
having a PXE environment isn't possible. The latter two features are
enabled by usage of ’koan’ (a client side provisioning application) on the
remote system. Update server features include yum mirroring over rsync://
and integration of those mirrors with kickstart. Cobbler is easy to use
and has an accompanying Python API. It supports RHEL4+, Fedora Core 5+,
and derivative distributions.

Changes: This release contains bugfixes related to argument and file
parsing. YAML serialization of data files in /var/lib/cobbler is also now
more human readable. Koan has been updated to 0.2.6, with minor changes.
Xen images are now saved in /var/lib/xen/images to conform with SELinux's
desired location for Xen images. In addition, the output from
"--list-profiles" in koan is now sorted.

  by 1bitmemory (http://freshmeat.net/users/1bitmemory/)
  Wed, Feb 28th 2007 13:21

System :: Filesystems

About: compFUSEd is a FUSE-based compressed overlay filesystem that
provides both read and write operations. Files are compressed and
decompressed on-the-fly, but the actual storage is done in the directory
of an underlying filesystem. This underlying filesystem takes care of
space allocation, fragmentation, and other operations not related to
compression. It features a configuration file, the ability to use multiple
compression formats, a blacklist of extensions that should not be
compressed, and more.

Changes: Many bugfixes. This release finally passes the standard
filesystem tests: tiobench, bonnie, and bonnie++. There is a new, somewhat
smarter chunk writer plugin, a new compression plugin for systems with
LZO2.x (instead of LZO1.x), and a new configuration file format.

  Wed, Feb 28th 2007 13:17

Database
Database :: Front-Ends

About: The DataBrowser is a Java-based tool for browsing virtually any
database. It has been tested with Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL/Postgres,
MySQL, DB2, and MS Access (among some others). It requires a Java 2 runtime
environment. The DataBrowser allows you to execute dynamic SQL, import and
export data, view the schema in a treeview, and view query results in a
table view. It also logs all SQL executed with the SQLLog feature.

Changes: This release adds SQLLog to DataBrowser, and now logs all SQL
statements executed over time to an internal HSQL database.

[017] - DBIx::Perlish 0.19
  by Grrrr (http://freshmeat.net/users/Grrrr/)
  Wed, Feb 28th 2007 11:15

About: The DBIx::Perlish module provides the ability to work with
databases supported by the DBI module using Perl's own syntax for the four
most common operations: SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, and INSERT. By using
DBIx::Perlish, you can write most of your database queries using a
domain-specific language with Perl syntax. However, the module is not
intended to replace all use of SQL in your program. The DBIx::Perlish
module quite intentionally neither implements nor cares about database
administration tasks like schema design and management.

Changes: The code has been modified so that it is usable with Safe.pm.
Joins understand <= as well as => delimiters. db_select {} is an alias for
db_fetch {}. Support has been added for <- @$ary and <- [1,2,3].

  by Aaron Stone (http://freshmeat.net/users/SodaBrew/)
  Wed, Feb 28th 2007 12:04

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP

About: The DBMAIL package replaces the normal UNIX mailing system. All
email and user data is stored in a database. You can create an unlimited
number of email accounts, which can be checked using the POP3 or IMAP
protocol. Users can maintain their own set of email addresses. It is more
scalable, more secure, and faster than traditional mail systems. DBMAIL
has storage drivers for PostgreSQL and MySQL, and it has authentication
drivers for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and LDAP.

Changes: The major bugfixes in this release relate to PostgreSQL query
errors in certain database encodings, causing some messages to remain in
the MTA queue until they are returned to sender. All DBMail/PostgreSQL
users should upgrade. Two user-facing changes are that dbmail-users now
has a -n switch for dry-run mode, and dbmail.conf now has two new entries:
encoding and default_msg_encoding. Empty convenience libraries are no
longer installed for unbuilt modules. A wider tolerance is allowed for
some unusual email addresses. Several small protocol glitches in IMAP and
POP3 daemons are fixed.

  Wed, Feb 28th 2007 04:10

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Elixir is a declarative layer on top of SQLAlchemy. It is a fairly
thin wrapper that provides the ability to define model objects following
the Active Record design pattern, and using a DSL syntax similar to that
of the Ruby on Rails ActiveRecord system. It does not intend to replace
SQLAlchemy's core features, but instead focuses on providing a simpler
syntax for defining model objects when you do not need the full
expressiveness of SQLAlchemy's manual mapper definitions.

Changes: This release adds support for single-table non-polymorphic
inheritance and for deferred columns, and includes some other minor new
features. It also contains some pretty important fixes (including better
multi-thread support and a MySQL-specific fix).

Internet
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Modem.pl is a small script that scrapes the Web interface of a
Motorola SURFboard cable modem for various status conditions like signal
strength and signal to noise ratio. The results are sent to STDOUT where
they can be easily piped into a log file. The modem values are also
checked for reasonable operating ranges. If the modem values are outside
of reasonable operating ranges, results are also sent to STDERR. When run
from a cron job, modem.pl can be used to monitor the condition of the
cable service and notify someone before conditions cause service
interruptions.

Changes: Now supports logging to RRDs databases. If the RRDs Perl package
is available, modem.pl will also log to an RRDs database (creating a new
one if needed). The results can then be monitored and graphed using
regular rddtools. A second script, modem_graph.pl, is included that will
create monthly, daily, and hourly modem status graphs in PNG format.

[054] - re2c 0.11.2
  by Marcus Boerger (http://freshmeat.net/users/helly25/)
  Wed, Feb 28th 2007 16:56

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: re2c is a tool for writing fast and flexible lexers. Unlike other
such tools, it concentrates solely on generating efficient code for
matching regular expressions. This make it suitable for a wide variety of
applications. The generated scanners approach hand-crafted ones in terms
of size and speed.

Changes: Scanners generated with re2c can now use signed character input
even when in 8-bit mode and -s or -b switches are in effect. To do so, you
simply activate re2c's new auto conversion feature, which will convert the
input to unsigned characters on the fly. You can also customize names used
in generated code and avoid compiler defines. You can replace the prefix
'yy' of numbered labels. This is controlled by the in-place configuration
"re2c:labelprefix".

[057] - ServerKit 0.0.9
  by swivel (http://freshmeat.net/users/swivel/)
  Wed, Feb 28th 2007 13:19

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: ServerKit helps developers quickly build efficient, scalable, and
uniformly configured, installed, and executed server programs (commonly
known as daemons) for Linux. A core server program handles configuration
parsing, database connection pool creation, and switching of users.
Application-specific shared object modules are loaded at runtime and
access the configuration data and database connection pools via simple
well-defined interfaces. A library that provides the server program with
most of its functionality, in addition to implementing a rich API for
quick module development, is included. The API includes abstraction of
thread pools, delayed work management using epoll, database connection
pools and querying, logging, queues, and heaps.

Changes: This release fixes an unlikely yet serious/fatal bug in the
handling of epoll_ctl errors when deleting a descriptor from the epoll
set.

About: tbclock is a small application that displays a full screen binary
clock in your terminal (using curses). It is quite simple, and features
modules like "guessbin" (a little game) and "chrono" (a timer with tenths
of seconds).

Changes: Resizing is now working. You can change the display mode on the
fly with the "a" key in "clock" and "chrono". Colors can be selected from
the command line with the -H and -M options. Decimal help is now triggered
with -e instead of -H. The new -p option allows you to display time in
AM/PM style instead of 24h. A new build system is used, so gmake is not
needed. Signedness in mod_clock was fixed for Linux/PPC. A display bug in

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: WidgetServer is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables
an application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server
Swing app, or as a Web app without any change and without loss of
functionality. A rich widget set is supported that includes tree views,
tabbed panes, split panels, and much more. A unified widget-based,
object-oriented programming interface for Web and Swing GUIs is offered to
the developer to control and assemble the GUI. Web applications are fully
AJAX enabled. For Swing client/server applications, the framework handles
client/server communication, including compression and security layers. A
GUI builder is included.

Changes: The behaviour of windows is nearly exactly the same in Web and
Swing applications now. This means for the Web that double-clicking on a
window title changes the mode from windowed to maximized and vice-versa,
and a double-click on window/dialog content brings it to the front.
