About: ArtistX is a live DVD which turns a computer into a full multimedia
production studio. It is based on Debian GNU/Linux and contains nearly all
the available free audio, 2D and 3D graphics, and video software for the
GNU/Linux computing platform. It doesn't need to be installed, and boots
directly into a running system without touching hard drives. The files
produced with ArtistX can be easily stored on a USB card or CD/DVD medium
while it is running.

Changes: All the ArtistX infrastructure and software were updated to the
new Debian Live code. Software that is not packaged for Debian or not in
the official archive (especially for video and 3D production) is included.
The look and feel were revamped using suggestions from media professionals.
KDE and GNOME applications now look nearly the same and dark, relaxing
colors are used.

  by Alexey Rybak (http://freshmeat.net/users/alexeyrybak/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Blitz templates is a fast template engine written in C and compiled
as a PHP module. It started as a php_templates replacement, but developed
into much more. It is based on extensible template controllers (custom
view classes in PHP) and weakly-active templates (simple logic in HTML).
Benchmarks show that it is one of the fastest template engines for PHP,
even though it's not trivial and makes Web application closer to the MVC2
architecture model. It was designed for big Internet projects with a lot
of complex presentation logic.

Changes: Documentation was updated and a Google cTemplate extension test
was added to the benchmarks. Minor fixes were made in the "clean" method
and Win32 compilation. "Clean" now removes all context iterations, not
just the latest one. "Clean" accepts a second boolean parameter that tells
Blitz to throw PHP warnings when the cleaned iteration is not found. This
parameter is TRUE by default.

About: c64img is a PHP script that converts an image (JPEG, PNG, or GIF)
to an image that can be shown on a Commodore 64 (FLI style). It searches
for the best possible colors in the 160x200 (X-doubled) resolution, and
uses a simple dithering method to distribute errors. It outputs a 640x200
image consisting of the resampled original on the left and the dithered
C64 image on the right.

Changes: Major feature enhancements were made. The following options were
added: "size=double" to double the size of the output image, "show=c64" to
show only the c64 image, "dither=[0-100]" to dither by a percentage
(default: 50%), and "palette=[c64s|ccs64|frodo|godot|pc64|vice|pepto]" to
select a palette.

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: ChronoJump is software and hardware to track jump, run, and
reaction time and pulse. It uses a contact platform suitable for two
events (in-platform, out-platform), and also a chronometer printed circuit
designed ad-hoc in order to obtain precise and trustworthy measurements.
The flight time of a jump is an indicator of the elevation of the center
of gravity of the jumper (as long as the starting and arrival position are
the same).

Changes: Configurable "realtime" bells on repetitive events were
implemented. The best and worst values of TF and TC are shown. This allows
ChronoJump to be used also as a training method. Reaction time was added.
Treeviews of repetitive tests now show average, total time, and standard
deviation of every test. Repetitive events get recorded in temporary
tables for being recovered if there's any crash. The "finish" and "cancel"
buttons work better, asking to the user to touch the platform if needed.
Standard (typical) deviation was added to statistics.

Documentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: Daikon is an implementation of dynamic detection of likely
invariants. An invariant is a property (such as "x=2*y+5" or
"this.next.prev = this" or "myarray is sorted by <") that holds at a
certain point or points in a program. Invariants are often seen in assert
statements, documentation, and formal specifications. Invariants can be
useful in program understanding and a host of other applications. Daikon
runs a program, observes the values that the program computes, and then
reports properties that were true over the observed executions. It can
detect properties in Java, C, C++, Perl, and IOA programs, in spreadsheet
files, and in other data sources.

Changes: Error messages related to configuration variables were improved.
Two bugs in Annotate and one in the utilMDE utility package were fixed.
The source code was made compatible with Java 6.

  Sat, Mar 31st 2007 12:16

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Capture :: Scanners
Office/Business

About: gscan2pdf is a GUI to ease the process of producing PDFs from
scanned documents. You scan in one or several pages and create a PDF of
selected pages. At maturity, the GUI will have similar features to that of
the Windows Imaging program, but with the express objective of writing a
PDF, including metadata. Scanning is handled with SANE via scanimage. PDF
conversion is done by libtiff. Perl is used for portability and ease of
programming, with gtk2-perl for the GUI.

Changes: tiff2pdf was replaced with PDF::API2, which fixes a character
encoding bug in metadata. The OCR result buffer is now embedded as an
annotation in PDF. PDF data can be imported. Modules are now loaded when
needed, rather than at start. Any format that imagemagick recognizes can
be imported. SpinButtons were added to adjust the top left corner of the
scan area. The save options are now inactive when there are no pages to
save. An Italian translation was added. The Dutch translation was updated.

About: Paludis is a package management library that works with Gentoo
style ebuilds, together with a simple console client. It is entirely
independent of Portage.

Changes: Partial, highly experimental support was added for Portage format
configuration files. Error and warning messages were improved, and error
tolerance was increased in various places. User hooks are now run with
prefixed output to make it clear what is running. There is no longer any
need to explicitly export variables in bashrc. Manual pages now indicate
default values for options. getgrgid returning NULL no longer causes
problems. Cleaning up working directories is no longer done with userpriv.

[030] - QjackCtl 0.2.22
  by Rui Nuno Capela (http://freshmeat.net/users/rncbc/)
  Sat, Mar 31st 2007 11:25

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: QjackCtl is a simple Qt application to control the JACK sound
server daemon, specifically for the Linux Audio Desktop infrastructure. It
is written in C++ around the Qt3 toolkit for X11, most exclusively using Qt
Designer. It provides a simple GUI dialog for setting several JACK daemon
parameters, which are properly saved between sessions, and a way to
control of the status of the audio server daemon. With time, this
primordial interface has become richer by including an enhanced patchbay
and connection control features.

Changes: The default settings for the freebob backend have been fixed. The
CPU Load status label now correctly says DSP Load. The most recently used
patchbay definitions can now be correctly selected in round-robin fashion
from its drop-down list widget. JACK MIDI ports are no longer listed with
regular audio ports on the Connections and Patchbay widgets. The 192k
sample rate was added to the setup settings drop down list. A minor
problem was fixed where most top-level widgets were missing the
normal-widget flag.

About: sim (simple instant messaging) is an IRC client specialized for use
with bitlbee. It is based on sic (http://suckless.org). It reads commands
from standard input and prints all server output to standard output. It
also multiplexes all channel traffic into one output, so you don't have to
switch to different channel buffers. sim must be customized by editing its
source code to insert the correct username, server, password, and
identification information.

Changes: The command operator was changed. Some code simplifications were
done. The output format was adjusted.

[036] - Socketpipe 1.8
  by Diomidis Spinellis (http://freshmeat.net/users/diomidis/)
  Sat, Mar 31st 2007 11:21

Internet
System :: Networking
Utilities

About: Socketpipe directly connects the input/output of a remote process
with local programs over a TCP/IP socket. Although the initial
communication setup is performed through client-server intermediaries
such as SSH or RSH, the communication channel that socketpipe establishes
is a direct socket connection between the local and the remote processes,
similar to a local pipe. The use of socketpipe removes the inefficiency of
multiple data copies and context switches through RSH/SSH, and can in many
cases offer dramatic throughput improvements.

Changes: This version corrects a bug in the command parsing of the Windows
version of socketpipe.

[037] - TinyMUX 2.7.0.5 (Alpha)
  by Brazil (http://freshmeat.net/users/brazilofmux/)
  Sat, Mar 31st 2007 11:27

Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)

About: TinyMUX is a text-based game server in the MUSH family. It is a
platform that allows several thousand players to connect to a single
text-driven environment, and interact with each other and with the
environment (which is maintained in a database). The rich programming
environment can be used to build almost anything, limited only by the
developer's imagination.

Changes: The UTF-8 string layer rewrite is done. Two forms of SSL
(STARTTLS and separate port_ssl) were added. The output side of NT-style
networking was refactored. The private use code points for Tengwar and
Klingon were turned on even though these code point assignments are not
official. The @eval command was added. Comtitle conversion was fixed.

[038] - WordGenerator 1.6
  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Sat, Mar 31st 2007 21:33

Text Processing :: Linguistic

About: WordGenerator generates hypothetical words from specifications of
their syllable structure. The user specifies the maximum length of the
words in syllables, the abstract structure of syllables in the language
(in terms of such units as consonants and vowels or onsets and rhymes),
and the actual sounds that comprise each abstract class (e.g. the list of
vowels in the language); WordGenerator then generates the words that
conform to this specification. Such lists are useful to field linguists
exploring the vocabulary of a language, and to designers of artificial
languages.

Changes: This release improves the configuration system. Documentation is
now provided. More parameters may be configured, variant forms of
parameter names are now accepted, and configuration files are
automatically located and read. A bug that made large word counts
inaccurate was also fixed.
