[001] - amforth 1.8
  by Matthias Trute (http://freshmeat.net/users/mtrute/)
  Tue, Apr 10th 2007 07:27

Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Hardware

About: amforth is a distribution of Forth running on the AVR ATmega
microcontroller. Once put into flash, it needs only a serial connection to
the host computer. New words are compiled directly into flash, thus
extending the dictionary immediately. It is ans94 Forth oriented with some
minor exclusions and a few words from the extension word sets. It is
written in assembly language and Forth itself. The main development uses
ATmega8 and ATmega32 controllers; other ATmega controllers should work
with small adjustments.

Changes: Amforth now enables all interrupt sources without recompilation.
The Top-Of-Stack element is now stored in a register pair, which
significantly increases speed. A lot of new double and mixed precision
arithmetic words were added.

  by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)
  Tue, Apr 10th 2007 00:52

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: A new picture size routine that maps specified user coordinates
to a given final size provides a convenient way of forcing the plotted
subregion of a graph to have a fixed size. The correct surface normal is
chosen when calculating lighting. The comment character can now be escaped
when reading strings from data files. The new word file mode is useful for
reading white space-delimited strings. PostScript output files are now
explicitly designated as EPSF in the header line. Interpolation and knot
theory modules were added.

[015] - cryptmount 2.0
  by rwpenney (http://freshmeat.net/users/rwpenney/)
  Tue, Apr 10th 2007 05:40

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Filesystems

About: cryptmount assists system administrators in setting up encrypted
filesystems based on the device mapper (dm-crypt) of GNU/Linux systems
using a 2.6-series kernel. After initial setup, it allows any user to
mount or unmount filesystems on demand, solely by providing the decryption
password, with any system devices needed to access the filing system being
configured automatically. A wide variety of encryption schemes (provided
by the kernel and OpenSSL library) can be used to protect both the filing
system and the access key. The protected filing systems can reside in
either ordinary files or disk partitions. The package also supports
encrypted swap partitions, and automatic configuration on system boot-up.

Changes: Built-in key-encryption based on SHA1 & Blowfish algorithms was
added (lessening dependence on OpenSSL or libgcrypt, especially during
system bootup). Support for very large (64-bit) filing systems and 64-bit
architectures was improved. Support for dynamically loadable
key-encryption modules was added. Support for setup of encrypted devices
at system boot-up was further improved.

  Tue, Apr 10th 2007 00:57

Software Development :: Libraries

About: The GUASI library implements a thread based generic asyncronous
execution engine, to be used to give otherwise synchronous calls an
asynchronous behavior. It can be used to wrap any synchronous call so that
it can be scheduled for execution and whose result can be fetched at a
later time (hence not blocking the submitter thread). The GUASI library
can be used as a complement to standard event retrieval interfaces like
poll(2), select(2), or epoll(4).

Changes: The GUASI handle creation API was changed to remove the stack

[044] - OpenVZ kernel 2.6.18-028stab027.1 (Development)
  by Kir Kolyshkin (http://freshmeat.net/users/k001/)
  Tue, Apr 10th 2007 10:07

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: OpenVZ is a modified Linux kernel with additional support for
OpenVZ Virtual Environments (VE, also known as VPS). VEs are isolated,
secure environments on a single physical server, enabling better server
utilization and ensuring that applications do not conflict. Each VE
performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server; VEs can be
rebooted independently and have root access, users, IP addresses, memory,
processes, files, applications, system libraries, and configuration files.
Due to a single kernel model, OpenVZ has native performance and very high
density. It is the core of Virtuozzo.

Changes: Fixes/improvements in checkpointing, NFS in VE, IOPRIO, and the
CPU fair scheduler. A few fixes have been ported from the mainstream
branch. The NMI watchdog is now disabled by default. DRBD has been updated

About: Remo is a graphical rule editor for ModSecurity, an Apache security
module. ModSecurity is quite difficult to configure successfully.
Modsecurity.org advertises a tested core ruleset granting you protection
from most known attacks, but this is only blocks traffic known to be
dangerous, when it is more effective to block everything not known to be

that would correctly describe the requests that are valid for an

About: StreamCruncher is an Event Processor. It supports a language based
on SQL which allows you to define "Event Processing" constructs like
Sliding Windows, Time Based Windows, Partitions, and Aggregates. Such
constructs allow for the specification of boundaries (some are time
sensitive) on a Stream of Events that SQL does not provide. Queries can be
written using this language, which in turn can be used to monitor streams
of incoming events. It also provides a feature similar to materialized
views. Joins and sub-queries are also supported to allow event
co-relation. A database is used underneath to do the heavy lifting.

Changes: This version does not have any changes to the code. The syntax
diagram was updated. Javadoc was added to the Web site.

[056] - strongSwan 4.1.1
  by Andreas Steffen (http://freshmeat.net/users/asteffen/)
  Tue, Apr 10th 2007 00:55

Security
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking

About: strongSwan is a complete IPsec and IKEv1 implementation for Linux
2.4 and 2.6 kernels. It also fully supports the new IKEv2 protocol with
Linux 2.6 kernels. It interoperates in both IKEv1 and IKEv2 mode with most
other IPsec-based VPN products. The focus of the strongSwan project is on
strong authentication mechanisms using X.509 public key certificates and
optional secure storage of private keys on smartcards through a
standardized PKCS#11 interface. A unique feature is the use of X.509
attribute certificates to implement advanced access control schemes based
on group memberships.

Changes: IKEv2 now supports automatic HTTP- and/or LDAP-based fetching of
certificate revocation lists using URIs extracted from CRL distribution
points. CRLs can optionally be cached with the cachecrls=yes option.
strongSwan now fully supports cookies in the presence of DoS attacks. New
IKEv1 features include the addition of a special NAT-T Vendor ID that
allows interoperability with Windows 2003 Server. The
--enable-nat-transport option activates NAT traversal for IPsec transport
mode.

[061] - xine xine-lib 1.1.5
  by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
  Tue, Apr 10th 2007 00:57

Multimedia :: Video :: Display

About: xine is a free multimedia player. It plays back CDs, DVDs, and
VCDs. It also decodes multimedia files like AVI, MOV, WMV, and MP3 from
local disk drives, and displays multimedia streamed over the Internet. It
interprets many of the most common multimedia formats available--and some
of the most uncommon formats, too. All those features come in a reusable
library (xine-lib) which can easily be embedded in your applications.

Changes: A heap overflow in the DMO loader, as reported in CVE-2007-1246,
was fixed. XCB-based output plugins using Xv and XShm were added.
Portability was increased. A crash in the eq2 plugin, a race condition in
the alsa output driver, and handling of ID3v2 tags on AAC input were
fixed. Many other improvements were made.
