[015] - CyberTester 2 0.3.0
  by Alexander Yap (http://freshmeat.net/users/alexycyap/)
  Thu, Jul 5th 2007 08:01

Education :: Testing

About: CyberTester is a Web-based application that was originally designed
to allow educators to create tests, exams, and assignments consisting of
multiple-choice questions and assign them to students for online testing.
Students can login to take these tests and review their results. It is
suitable for integrating into online education services. It uses Java
Enterprise Edition (with EJB 3) and runs on JBoss.

Changes: This release implements domain hierarchy segregation for users,
which is particularly useful for administrator users. An administrator can
now be restricted to only a sub-section of the domain hierarchy tree, thus
can only access and modify users, tests, and questions within the
restricted sub-nodes. This release has been updated for JBoss 4.2.0 GA. An
updated JDBC driver is provided to support MySQL 5.x.

  by Jeff Yestrumskas (http://freshmeat.net/users/jeph/)
  Thu, Jul 5th 2007 05:50

Internet :: Log Analysis
Security
System :: Logging

About: devialog is a behavior/anomaly/signature-based syslog intrusion
detection system which can detect new, unknown attacks. It fits
comfortably in a heterogeneous Unix/Linux/*BSD environment at the core of
a central syslog server. devialog generates its own signatures and acts
upon anomalies as configured by the system administrator. In addition,
devialog can function as a traditional syslog parsing utility in which
known signatures trigger actions.

Changes: Bug fixes include better handling of lines with some special
characters. A timing error was fixed within alert generation: sometimes
alerts would be sent inadvertently based on the timing of a new log
arriving as an alert was sent out in specific high-volume log situations.
Altered signature generation creates more exact regular expressions.

Internet

About: GeoServer connects your information to the Geospatial Web. With
GeoServer, you can publish and edit data using open standards. Your
information is made available in a large variety of formats as maps/images
or actual geospatial data. GeoServer's transactional capabilities offer
robust support for shared editing. It supports WFS-T and WMS open
protocols from the OGC to produce JPEG, PNG, SVG, KML/KMZ, GML, PDF,
Shapefiles, and more. It is built on the GeoTools2 Java GIS toolkit.

Changes: This release includes full WFS 1.1 support, GeoRSS as a new
output format, many KML improvements, including superoverlays (with the
ability to reference a remote TileCache instance) and templated output,
and a new integrated Google maps demo. It also integrates Acegi, a great
security subsystem. The other big piece is versioning support in the WFS,
so one can do history, diffs, and rollbacks on edited geographic features.
There are a number of small improvements as well, including syntax
highlighting in SLD editing and an improved preview window for sample
requests.

  Thu, Jul 5th 2007 11:09

Software Development

About: GNU gengetopt takes a simple description of arguments and
generates a C function that uses the GNU getopt_long(3) function to
parse and validate the options. It is perfect if you are too lazy to
write all that is required to call getopt_long(3), or need to use many
options. The generated code also works with autoconf or automake.

Changes: This release fixes some bugs when --include-getopt is specified.
In help output, a section is not generated if all its options are hidden.
The option --default-optional, which allows specifying that all options
are by default optional, was added. A bug corrupting memory when using
args entry in the .ggo file was fixed.

Changes: There is now a conversion tool from the old syntax to the new one
introduced in 2.95a. Continuations and generators have moved to the base
image. The test suite covers the iconv package too. The package manager
has been mostly rewritten and now installs packages as ".star" (Smalltalk
archive) compressed files. All service scripts supplied with GNU Smalltalk
are now written in Smalltalk exclusively, and the file handling class
libraries were improved heavily as a result. GNU Smalltalk now needs

[024] - gpsdings 0.2
  by ringler (http://freshmeat.net/users/ringler/)
  Thu, Jul 5th 2007 11:20

Scientific/Engineering :: Geographical

About: GPSdings is a Java 1.5 command line tool for the manipulation and
analysis of track and waypoint data recorded with a GPS receiver. It
comprises the following applications: exifloc (determines the geolocation
of digital camera pictures from a GPS track), trackanalyzer (analyzes and
plots GPS tracks), gpxkml (converts GPX to KML), googlemap (converts GPX
to Google Maps API Javascript), and gpxovl (converts between GPX and OVL
formats).

Changes: The functionality of the exifloc and trackanalyzer components has
been extended. Gpsdings can now calculate additional quantities like
bearing and slope, can create interactive SVG plots, and can produce KML
tracks colored by altitude, speed, etc. While it used to need an external
binary, Gpsdings can now directly write GPS information to the EXIF

[042] - rsyslog 1.15.0 (Development)
  by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
  Thu, Jul 5th 2007 02:19

System :: Logging

About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among other
features, it offers support for reliable syslog over TCP and RFC 3195,
writing to MySQL databases, fully configurable output formats (including
great timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog
message, and on-the-wire message compression. It is designed as a drop-in
replacement for stock syslogd and thus is able to work with the same
configuration file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features require
changing the configuration file, but in general, this should be fairly
easy.

Changes: rsyslog now supports dynamic file names in selector lines. With
that, log files can be automatically created based on sending host, time
of reception, and any other message property. Also, control over file
creation modes has been improved. There are some minor improvements. This
release is recommended to any user interested in the new features.

[049] - strongSwan 4.1.4
  by Andreas Steffen (http://freshmeat.net/users/asteffen/)
  Thu, Jul 5th 2007 01:42

Security
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking

About: strongSwan is a complete IPsec and IKEv1 implementation for Linux
2.4 and 2.6 kernels. It also fully supports the new IKEv2 protocol with
Linux 2.6 kernels. It interoperates in both IKEv1 and IKEv2 mode with most
other IPsec-based VPN products. The focus of the strongSwan project is on
strong authentication mechanisms using X.509 public key certificates and
optional secure storage of private keys on smartcards through a
standardized PKCS#11 interface. A unique feature is the use of X.509
attribute certificates to implement advanced access control schemes based
on group memberships.

Changes: Support of the IKEv2-based MOBIKE protocol (RFC 4555) allows
dynamic IP address changes and multi-homing without re-establishing the
IPsec tunnels. For IKEv1, the introduction of the rightallowany=yes option
or, as an alternative, the right=%peer.foo.bar wildcard improves the
re-establishment of IPsec connections after a dynamic address change in a
host which registers its address with DynDNS.
