Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: Boosting is a meta-learning approach that aims at combining an
ensemble of weak classifiers to form a strong classifier. Adaptive
Boosting (Adaboost) implements this idea as a greedy search for a linear
combination of classifiers by overweighting the examples that are
misclassified by each classifier. icsiboost implements Adaboost over
stumps (one-level decision trees) on discrete and continuous attributes
(words and real values). This approach is one of the most efficient and
simple to combine continuous and nominal values. This implementation is
aimed at allowing training from millions of examples by hundreds of
features in a reasonable amount of time/memory.

  Mon, Jul 23rd 2007 17:49

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat

About: The most important part of the IRC Collective is the parser, with a
modular architecture that makes it flexible in the way it can process input
and handle output. The output of the parser is primarily used to add to an
SQL database that can in turn be queried by, e.g., a Web application (also
provided). The parser can be extended by defining new input formats and
output handlers. It can help you stay up to date on the IRC channels that
you visit regularly. You can write your own applications on top of the SQL
database. You can search past conversations using the Web interface
(results will be paged).

Changes: This release adds support for PostgreSQL and SQLite. To make this
possible, the database has been changed slightly, so you will need to
recreate your database if you want to upgrade.

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing

About: K3b is a CD and DVD burning application for Linux systems optimized
for KDE. It provides a comfortable user interface to perform most CD/DVD
burning tasks, such as creating an audio CD from a set of audio files or
copying a CD. While the experienced user can influence all steps of the

is done by the command line utilities cdrecord, cdrdao, and growisofs.

Changes: The old behavior of reloading a medium before verification was
reverted. The program no longer crashes when the currently playing audio
project item is removed. Desktop actions to handle empty media with K3b
were added. Read retry when reading data tracks was fixed. K3b's dialogs
now honor the global button layout setting. MP3 files without tags no
longer crash the program if it was compiled with taglib support. Copying a
rewritable media to itself is no longer allowed. A crash on startup with
devices that return bogus GET PERFORMANCE data was fixed.

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: RPL/2 (Reverse Polish Lisp/2) is a langage derived from the RPL
made by Hewlett-Packard for its HP-28S. It has some extensions
(preprocessor, compilated libraries, new functions), a TeX output, and can
draw graphics.

Changes: An examples subdirectory was added. Major bugs were fixed in
interface_tex.c, tex.h, ->HMS, and recherche_variable(). When an
expression is evaluated in a function, all variables set in this function
must be visible in the expression. LAST stack is saved in rplcore. A major
bug was fixed when rpl is called with an empty file. Libtool support was
removed. Two new scripts (rplc and rpllink) are provided to use librpl.a.
Trace output now contains PID. rpl-core was renamed to rpl-code-$PID. The
librpl entry point was modified to return results as an array of strings.
The -S option was added. VERSION was modified to return a list.

[038] - rsyslog 1.17.2 (Development)
  by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
  Mon, Jul 23rd 2007 05:36

System :: Logging

About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among other
features, it offers support for reliable syslog over TCP and RFC 3195,
writing to MySQL databases, fully configurable output formats (including
great timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog
message, and on-the-wire message compression. It is designed as a drop-in
replacement for stock syslogd and thus is able to work with the same
configuration file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features require
changing the configuration file, but in general, this should be fairly
easy.

Changes: Output modules have mostly been moved to their own .c/.h files.
Some bugs were fixed. The system() call is now replaced with a more decent
version. The $ModLoad MySQL and $DropTrailingLFOnReception wconfig
directives were added. This is a recommended update for all users.

[040] - Seed7 2007-07-23
  by Thomas Mertes (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomas_mertes/)
  Mon, Jul 23rd 2007 14:01

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements
and operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.

Changes: The compiler (comp.sd7) was improved to allow local functions.
The compiler now supports arrays with indices of any type (not just
integer). A new example program (mandelbr.sd7), to display fractals, was
added. The -O2 option was added to the compiler (advantageous when
compiling mandelbr.sd7). A *:= operator and the sqrAbs function were added
for the type 'complex'. The reflection was changed to use 'getValue'
instead of the 'value' operator. The compiler was improved to support the
conversion of integers to an enumeration type. The compiler now compiles
the programs panic.sd7 and castle.sd7.

About: SlackRoll is a package or upgrade manager for Slackware Linux. It
is designed to work with official mirrors in systems mainly composed of
official packages with a few unofficial packages. It lets you
automatically upgrade or install packages, and displays which packages
have been added or removed from the Slackware tree.

Changes: This release adds the following operations: list-outdated-frozen,
install-path, download-path, info-path, urls-path, remove-path,
broken-symlinks, and orphan-search. The show-upgrade-urls operation has
been renamed to urls-upgrades for consistency. The broken-symlinks
operation lets you detect broken symlinks in your file system, and the
orphan-search operation lets you list files that are not part of any
package. Finally, it supports having several local versions of a package

System :: Operating System Kernels

About: The Web100 project was created to produce a complete host-software
environment that will run common TCP applications at 100% of the available
bandwidth, regardless of the magnitude of a network's capability. Web100
has endowed TCP with better instrumentation. This instrumentation is the
foundation for both the TCP autotuning performed in process-level code and
the process- level tools designed to locate bottlenecks within the
following major subsystems: the sending application, the sending OS, the
Internet path, the receiving OS, and the receiving application.
Measurement tools have also been built on this instrumentation to display
