[001] - abcm2ps 5.5.1 (Development)
  by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
  Tue, Aug 7th 2007 05:45

Printing

About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.

Changes: Several internal changes were made, and the option 'f' was added
in %%staffbreak.

About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support, verification for digital signatures and text
extraction. Both variations offer full Unicode support, encryption,
embedded TrueType and Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, and spot and
calibrated color.

Changes: The KeyStoreManager class was added to the viewer, which provides
a management console for digital keys and certificates. The ability to
submit forms to the viewer was added. HTTP and basic FDF submission are
currently supported. Some support methods for form submission were added
to the PDFAction and FDF classes. The PDFPage.get/setPageOrientation()
method was added to quickly rotate a page by 90, 180, or 270 degrees.
Features to do this to the viewer were also added. The
PublicKeyEncryptionHandler.chooseRecipient() method was added to allow
subclasses to automatically select a matching key.

  Tue, Aug 7th 2007 05:23

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring

About: Clonezilla is a partition or disk cloning tool similar to Symantec
Ghost. It saves and restores only blocks in use on the hard drive if the
file system is supported. For unsupported file systems, dd is used
instead. It has been used to clone a 5 GB system to 40 clients in about 10
minutes.

Changes: With the "-m" option in ocs-iso or ocs-live-dev, a customized
script can be integrated into clonezilla live. A sample program can be
found in /opt/drbl/sample/custom-ocs. The dialog selection was simplified
by using --menu instead of --radiolist in most of the dialog programs.
Therefore, the space bar is no longer pressed to select some of the
choices.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: LimeSurvey (formerly PHPSurveyor) is a Web application that
interacts with MySQL or MSSQL to develop surveys, publish surveys, and
collect responses to surveys. Once a survey has been created, data can be
inserted into the survey either by a "pretty" public screen which presents
each question one at a time, or by a quick and nasty data entry screen. It
includes the capacity to generate individualized "tokens", so that
invitations can be issued to participants. It also has the capacity to set
conditions on whether questions will display (branching), numerous question
types, and a basic statistics function.

Changes: The most import new features are a new user management system,
MSSQL compatibility using adodb, multi-lingual surveys (which allow you to
conduct the same survey in several languages at the same time), new
Question Types, a complete overhaul of the new administrative GUI, online
documentation, and more than 9 additional languages (25 in total). Lots of
other improvements have been made in handling and installing.

About: A 'honeypot' is designed to detect server-side attacks. In
contrast, a 'honeyclient' is designed to detect client-side attacks.
Specifically, a honeyclient is a dedicated host that drives specially
instrumented applications to access remote servers to see if those servers
are behaving in a malicious manner (by compromising the client).
Honeyclients can proactively detect exploits against client applications
without known signatures. This framework uses a client-server model with
SOAP messaging as the primary communication method, and uses the free
version of VMware Server as a means of virtualizing the client
environment.

Changes: This release resolves ticket #68, which caused the program to
block you from starting a Manager process without initializing a database
(even if you disabled database support). To upgrade, simply download the

[031] - OpenDBX 1.3.4 (Development)
  by Norbert Sendetzky (http://freshmeat.net/users/nsendetzky/)
  Tue, Aug 7th 2007 05:46

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The OpenDBX library provides a unified and consistent API for
software developers to different database management systems. The function
library is written in the C programming language and aims at implementing
access to the native database interfaces efficiently via a thin
abstraction layer. It consists of a basic set of functions that are part
of all vendor database libraries and can be extended by additional
function blocks. Currently, Firebird/Interbase, MS SQL Server, MySQL,
Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQLite 2 and 3, and Sybase ASE are supported.

Changes: This release adds the C++ interface for the large object
functions, the missing Conn::getCapability() member function, and the
regression test code for libopendbxplus. For more control over loading the
backend modules, it's now possible to supply the full path to the backend
library as the first parameter to odbx_init(). Also, there was a change of
the parameter type of odbx_lo_open() as well as a change regarding the
visibility of the C++ class variables. Finally, the pgsql backend returned
partly wrong results for boolean values if odbx_field_value() was called
twice. This is fixed now.

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
System :: Systems Administration

About: The Openwall Linux kernel patch is a collection of security
"hardening" features for the Linux kernel. In addition to the new
features, some versions of the patch contain various security fixes. The
"hardening" features of the patch, while not a complete method of
protection, provide an extra layer of security against the easier ways to
exploit certain classes of vulnerabilities and/or reduce the impact of
those vulnerabilities. The patch can also add a little bit more privacy to
the system by restricting access to parts of /proc so that users may not
see what others are doing.

[033] - Pantry 13
  by massysett (http://freshmeat.net/users/massysett/)
  Tue, Aug 7th 2007 05:59

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: Pantry is a command line nutrient analysis program. It will help
you track your food intake and analyze recipes for their nutrient content.
Because it works entirely from the command line, it is very fast to use,
powerful, and flexible.

Changes: The Foods XML and Recipe XML files were merged into one file
format, now called Pantry XML. This simplifies the addition of new foods
and recipes, and makes the code a great deal simpler. Pantry now
internally tracks a recipe's ingredients, which allows you to get tidy
reports about a recipe's ingredients and other information.

[034] - phpMyID 0.6
  by CJ Niemira (http://freshmeat.net/users/cniemira/)
  Tue, Aug 7th 2007 11:26

About: phpMyID is a small, fairly lightweight, standalone, single-user
Identity Provider for OpenID authentication. It comprises a single PHP
script that can be used by one individual to run their own personal OpenID
"IdP." The program requires no external libraries, and has very minimal
requirements. It should run on almost any server that runs PHP 4 or 5. It
requires no database, and does not access the file system beyond session
handling.

Changes: This release should fix the outstanding (known) "bad signature"
errors, adds a number of refinements, includes a testing mode, and
provides support for a more versatile set of "big math" functions.

[040] - Seed7 2007-08-07
  by Thomas Mertes (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomas_mertes/)
  Tue, Aug 7th 2007 14:46

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements
and operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.

Changes: The handling of local functions in the compiler (comp.sd7) was
improved. The function 'option' (to get compile time defines) was renamed
to 'configValue'. The compiler was improved to support the 'configValue'
function. The 'ord' function for enumerations was changed to work without
DYNAMIC. The changelog was reversed (sorted now from newest to oldest),
and old entries were added. The address of the FSF was changed in various
files.

[044] - Strasheela 0.8.3
  by Torsten Anders (http://freshmeat.net/users/tanders/)
  Tue, Aug 7th 2007 15:11

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: Strasheela is a highly expressive constraint-based music
composition system. Users declaratively state a music theory and the
computer generates music which complies with this theory. A theory is
formulated as a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) by a set of rules
(constraints) applied to a music representation in which some aspects are
expressed by variables (unknowns). Music constraint programming is
style-independent and is well-suited for highly complex theories (e.g. a
fully-fledged theory of harmony). Results can be output into various
formats including MIDI, Lilypond, and Csound.

Changes: This release greatly extends the available documentation. It now
comes with a tutorial (draft) and includes several examples with musical
output, an explanation of their underlying music theory, remarks on their
implementation, and the full source code. Substantial background
information on Strasheela is given by a monograph. Also, many additions
and bugfixes have been made to the system.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: VRaptor 2 is a Web-based MVC and IOC framework based on many
frameworks and ideas (Seam, Stripes, Webwork, Hibernate Annotations, etc).
It makes full use of Java 5 Annotations. It favors convention over
configuration, because configuration in XML/properties/annotations is
always easy to make mistakes and repetitive (aka copy and paste in many
places). This framework uses a more imperative approach, instead of having
many XML files to configure lifecycle and other properties. Most of the
settings go inside plain Java objects (POJO), so the team knows exactly
what is going on and where.

Changes: This release comes with many improvements including a new Maven
plugin that automatically generates the vraptor.xml file. Projects based
on Maven 2 can now use mvn jetty:run. Objects in the new ScopeType.FLASH
will exist until the next request.
