[004] - Blitz templates for PHP 0.5.1
by Alexey Rybak (http://freshmeat.net/users/alexeyrybak/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: Blitz templates is a fast PHP template engine written in C and
compiled as a PHP extension. It started as a php_templates replacement,
but developed into much more. It is based on extensible template
controllers (custom view classes in PHP) and weakly-active templates
(simple logic in HTML). Benchmarks show that it is one of the fastest
template engines for PHP, even though it's not trivial and makes Web
application closer to a smart MVC-like architecture model with maximal
separation of HTML from your code. It was designed for big high-load
Internet projects with a lot of complex presentation logic.
Changes: Lot of code cleanup was done. The "parse" and "include" methods
were improved, and their "vars" argument is not a globals array anymore;
now it's just an arbitrary iteration set and both methods comply with
set/block/fetch. Templates included by the "include" method from PHP code
inherit globals from the caller automatically. Corresponding tests were
updated. A new article was added to the documentation: "Quick Geek Blitz
Tutorial", which is addressed to those professionals who want to learn API
basics in a minimum of time.

Internet
Printing
Software Development :: Libraries
About: CUPS provides a portable printing layer for Unix(r)-based operating
systems. It has been developed to promote a standard printing solution for
all Unix vendors and users. CUPS provides the System V and Berkeley
command line interfaces, and uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP")
as the basis for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon
(LPD) Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect)
protocols are also supported with reduced functionality. CUPS adds network
printer browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing
options to support real world printing under UNIX. It includes an image
file RIP that supports printing of image files to non-PostScript printers.
A customized version of GNU Ghostscript 7.05 for CUPS called ESP
Ghostscript is available separately to support printing of PostScript
files within the CUPS driver framework. Sample drivers for Dymo, EPSON,
HP, and OKIDATA printers are included that use these filters.
Changes: This is the first stable feature release in the 1.3.x series and
includes over 30 new features and changes since 1.2.12, including Kerberos
authentication, DNS-SD/Bonjour/Zeroconf support, improved online help, and
localized printer drivers.

About: Das Schaefchen is a lightweight HTTP server for Linux platforms. It
supports the minimum requirements of the HTTP/1.1 protocol and virtual
hosts, basic authentication (which can be used to protect either files or
directories), directory listing, and byte ranges. It is an event-driven
server that runs as a single process with a single thread using
non-blocking I/O. It uses epoll as the event notification mechanism to
multiplex control between active connections.
Changes: This release adds error code 301 (Moved Permanently). When a
directory listing is requested and the path doesn't terminate in '/', an
error code 301 with the new location is returned.

Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Hoc, the High Order Calculator, is an interpreted language for
floating-point calculations. Its most basic use is as a powerful and
convenient calculator, interactively evaluating expressions such as
1+2*sin(0.7). But hoc is no ordinary calculator: It also lets you assign
values to variables, define your own functions, and use loops,
conditionals, and everything else you'd expect in a programming language.
Changes: Hoc was developed by Brian Kernighan and Rob Pike, and introduced
in their 1984 book "The Unix Programming Environment". Nadav Har'El took
this code and slowly improved it for a decade. Another decade later, he's
finally releasing the result as free software.

Mon, Aug 13th 2007 11:02
System :: Logging
About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among other
features, it offers support for reliable syslog over TCP and RFC 3195,
writing to MySQL databases, fully configurable output formats (including
great timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog
message, and on-the-wire message compression. It is designed as a drop-in
replacement for stock syslogd and thus is able to work with the same
configuration file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features require
changing the configuration file, but in general, this should be fairly
easy.
Changes: This is a cleanup and maintenance release. The documentation has
been enhanced and some minor bugs have been fixed. Some preparations were
made to support loadable output plugins in the future. Compatibility with
the Debian package system has been enhanced. This is a recommended update
for all users.

[038] - xar 1.5.1
by Rob Braun (http://freshmeat.net/users/rbraun/)
Mon, Aug 13th 2007 11:07
System :: Archiving
About: XAR stands for eXtensible ARchiver. XAR is a new archive format,
library, and archiver to meet modern archival needs. It can archive
Extended Attributes and ACLs for Linux, FreeBSD, and Mac OS X 10.4 systems
and resource forks and Finder metadata on Mac OS X 10.3. XAR can extract
files using either numeric (uid/gid) or symbolic (username/groupname) file
ownerships, saving the hassle of remapping uids/gids to the correct users.
Python bindings, Cocoa bindings, and a Finder Contextual Menu Plugin are
available separately.
Changes: The way EAs are handled in the ToC has been changed. Archives
created with 1.4 should still extract with 1.5, except EAs will be lost
due to this change. Archiving EAs with non-UTF-8 characters in the name is
fixed. Archiving ACLs on Mac OS X 10.4 should be fixed. There are some API
enhancements. Finder creation dates are preserved. Some errors relating to
_ files were fixed. A creation timestamp has been added to the ToC,
recording when the archive was made. Device nodes are properly preserved
now.
