Die Hard Make Habits
by Adrian Neagu (http://freshmeat.net/~buildsmith/)
Section: Editorials
Sat, Sep 1st 2007 00:00
The make build tool was (and still is) very influential in the sphere of
software development tools. Its influence is so powerful that even bad
aspects of its design survive in the next generation of build tools. Many
generations of developers grew up in the school of make. Like the frog in
the slowly heating bowl, they got used to its quirks to the point of not
feeling the pain anymore. But they shouldn't be too quick to conclude that
make's way is the one and only way. The punishment is to miss the
opportunity for significant improvement.

[001] - Advanced Website Creator 2.2.0
by Vesselin Atanasov (http://freshmeat.net/users/vesselin/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development
About: Advanced Website Creator is a Web development environment. Created
websites use an MVC framework written in PHP 5 and a simple database
abstraction layer. At present the database layer supports MySQL,
PostgreSQL, and SQLite as backends. All PHP classes are auto-loaded, so
there is no need to include() or require() files manually. Search engine
friendly URLs are supported via mod_rewrite. The program has wizards for
quick generation of forms and CRUD pages.
Changes: A new wizard has been added that allows quick generation of
database tables and the corresponding list, add, edit, and delete pages. A
bug has been fixed in the Windows version which could prevent the Web
server from starting correctly. A bug has been fixed that could cause
errors when the back-end database did not support transactions. A bug has
been fixed in the cookie-handling JavaScript functions.

[002] - AsmBug 0.9.42
by Jeff Owens (http://freshmeat.net/users/rabidrecluse/)
Sat, Sep 1st 2007 16:47
About: AsmBug is a small powerful debugger for assembly language. It is
written in assembly, and connects directly to an X server. It works with
source files to present results, and also works with striped executables.
It has no dependencies and can be installed by copying. Most operations
are a single click or keystroke, and each window has a help pop-up.
Changes: Support for the Fasm assembler was added and several bugs were
fixed. Tricky code is now detected and a warning is given. The
documentation was updated and a FAQ was added along with a summary of
features.

[015] - deco archive file extractor 0.5
by P. Hartlich (http://freshmeat.net/users/phartlich/)
Sat, Sep 1st 2007 14:27
System :: Archiving
About: deco is a generic archive file extractor that has a consistent
command line interface ("deco 1.tar.bz2 2.zip 3.flac 4.rar 5.deb" will
just work) and consistent behavior (it never deletes archives after
extraction, extracts relative to the current working directory, and
extracts just verbosely enough, all unless explicitly requested
otherwise). It provides automatic handling of extractor gotchas by
creating an extraction directory if there is more than one file or
directory at the archive top level and by being able to fix strange
permissions. Dozens of archive file extensions are supported out of the
box, and adding support for others requires very little work.
Changes: Even insane file names with path components ending in a newline
now work as expected. (Solaris and legacy system users should read the new
installation instructions, as support for non-SUS legacy shells had to be
dropped.) deco's version is displayed in the usage note. A new
handwritten, strictly conforming options parser is used.

[027] - GNU ddrescue 1.6-pre3 (Development)
by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
Sat, Sep 1st 2007 14:13
System :: Recovery Tools
About: GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies data from one file
or block device (hard disc, cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue
data in case of read errors. GNU ddrescue does not truncate the output
file if not asked to. So, every time you run it on the same output file,
it tries to fill in the gaps. The basic operation of GNU ddrescue is fully
automatic. That is, you don't have to wait for an error, stop the program,
read the log, run it in reverse mode, etc. If you use the logfile feature
of GNU ddrescue, the data is rescued very efficiently (only the needed
blocks are read). Also you can interrupt the rescue at any time and resume
it later at the same point.
Changes: The new option "--fill", which allows selective overwriting of
the output file, has been added.

[029] - gpgdir 1.5
by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
Sat, Sep 1st 2007 15:10
Security :: Cryptography
About: gpgdir is a Perl script that uses the CPAN GnuPG module to encrypt
and decrypt directories using a GPG key specified in ~/.gpgdirrc. It
supports recursively descending through a directory in order to make sure
it encrypts or decrypts every file in a directory and all of its
subdirectories. All file mtime and atime values are preserved across
encryption and decryption operations. In addition, gpgdir is careful not
to encrypt hidden files and directories.
Changes: The --Symmetric option was added so that files can be encrypted
or decrypted via a symmetric encryption algorithm (GnuPG commonly uses
CAST5 for this). The --Plain-ascii option was added so that GnuPG is
invoked with the -a option so that encrypted files are ASCII armored
instead of encrypted in binary form. A bugfix was made to ensure not to
delete zero-size files if a bad password is given (gpgdir now just throws
a warning and exits in this case). .asc files are excluded from the
encryption and decryption processes.

[032] - Gwyddion 2.8 (Stable)
by David Necas (Yeti) (http://freshmeat.net/users/yeti2/)
Sat, Sep 1st 2007 15:07
Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
About: Gwyddion is a modular SPM (Scanning Probe Microsope) data
visualization and analysis tool. It can be used for all most frequently
used data processing operations including: leveling, false color plotting,
shading, filtering, denoising, data editing, integral transforms, grain
analysis, profile extraction, fractal analysis, and many more. The program
is primarily focused on SPM data analysis (e.g. data obtained from AFM,
STM, NSOM, and similar microscopes). However, it can also be used for
analyzing SEM (scaning electron microscopy) data or any other 2D data.
Changes: The built-in simpleFFT can handle Fourier transforms of arbitrary
size, and resampling was removed from all functions and modules that employ
FFT. A crash in the JPK file loader was fixed. A new resource GwyGrainValue
was added, allowing user-defined grain properties. A new grain property was
added: area above half-height; there were some grain function user
interface improvements. It is possible to switch graph axes to logscale
even in the presence of negative values. Tip operations can resample tip
automatically to match data resolution.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: i18nHTML is a collection of scripts that can be used to write Web
pages that visitors can translate into their respective native languages.
It uses a database to match sentences from the Web page against
translations and defines a set of PHP functions that generate either the
translated HTML sentences or the original (typically English) text with
decorations that allow users to provide translations. It requires that
internationalized pages be written using the functions but does not
constrain the page design in any way. Internationalized pages can be
updated without losing existing translations for sentences that were not
changed.
Changes: This release adds various minor enhancements to the user
interface (for both translators and administrators).
