[001] - AsmMgr 0.9.42
by Jeff Owens (http://freshmeat.net/users/rabidrecluse/)
Sun, Sep 2nd 2007 09:06
About: AsmMgr is a file manager configured for assembly language
development. It can build Makefiles, build sample programs, select
installed assemblers, and manipulate project files. The operation is
similar to the classic "mc" file manager.
Changes: This release has been updated to support the new reference tools,
debugger, and changes to AsmLib. Due to a timing problem with the X server,
it now runs slightly slower. The overall speed is still much faster than
other file managers. It complies with the SFF (Small Fast Friendly)
guidelines.

by hadji (http://freshmeat.net/users/hadji/)

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis
About: The aim of auch is to visualize harmonics in musical recordings.
Many tools show the spectrum, but this tool focuses on one or two specific
octaves with an indication of the tonica (the key) and sub-dominant(IV) and
dominant(V). It also supports wavelet transformation and resampling to
further analyze and clean-up the recording. This way, notes, chords, and
harmonics in a musical piece become more clear. Another feature is that
this tool can compare outgoing audio (from a .wav file) with incoming
audio (microphone). This way, the effect of external filters can be
tested.
Changes: The UNFOLD command simulates an expanding medium, ether, that
propagates music from a sender to a receiver. This elastic medium is used
to see if there is a fundamental invariable chord in a melody.

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
About: The audit package contains the user-space utilities for creating
audit rules, as well as for storing and searching the audit records
generate by the audit subsystem in the Linux 2.6 kernel.
Changes: This release finalizes support for external plugins to analyze
audit events in real time, updates system-config-audit with some bugfixes,
fixes reference counting in auparse Python bindings, and adds a missing
newline to the string output of the event dispatcher.

[004] - Bacula 2.2.1
by Lev_Arris (http://freshmeat.net/users/LevArris/)
Sun, Sep 2nd 2007 09:23
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: Bacula is a set of programs that allow you to manage the backup,
recovery, and verification of computer data across a network of different
computers. It is based on a client/server architecture and is efficient
and relatively easy to use, while offering many advanced storage
management features that make it easy to find and recover lost or damaged
files.
Changes: This release fixes a problem when restoring files with quotes in
the name, and several issues with bat. The Win32 service routines were
rewritten and the projects file was updated.

[005] - Bubbling Load Monitor Applet 2.0.7 (Gnome 2)
by Walles (http://freshmeat.net/users/walles/)
Sun, Sep 2nd 2007 06:16
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
About: The Bubbling Load Monitor (or "Bubblemon" for short) is a system
load monitor for the GNOME panel. It looks like a vial containing water.
The water level indicates how much (electronic) memory is in use. The
color of the liquid indicates how much swap space is used. The amount of
bubbles reflects the system CPU load. A message in a bottle indicates
there is unread mail. A reed-like graph shows network load. On multi-core
systems the CPU with the highest load will bubble in the middle, and the
others on the sides, so it's possible to see how well load gets
distributed between CPUs.
Changes: CPU load distribution is now visualized by having the most
heavily loaded CPU bubbling in the middle and the others on the sides. SMP
detection code was fixed. The GNOME category changed to "System &
Hardware".

[006] - CacheGuard OS 4.1.6b
by Afshin Tajvidi (http://freshmeat.net/users/tajflow/)
Sun, Sep 2nd 2007 07:26
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Security
About: CacheGuard is a Linux-based operating system dedicated to Web
traffic control and optimization. It transforms an x86-based machine into
a powerful, Web gateway appliance. It allows you to secure Web traffic for
Web surfers and Web servers by acting as a forwarding and reverse HTTP /
HTTPS proxy. It supports HTTP transparent implementation, HTTP
compression, Web caching, URL black- and whitelist guarding, and Web
server load balancing. It features a stateful firewall with NAT and PAT.
It integrates a caching DNS, a DHCP server, a bandwidth shaper to manage
the QoS, a load sharing system, and an HA (high availability) mode with
VRRP and link bonding.
Changes: By default, route tracing (traceroute) is allowed from the
internal zone to the external zone. The Web GUI for the firewall
configuration (menu items "Security/External Firewall" and
"Security/Internal Firewall") was fixed to work properly for long content.
The content filtering for the Web GUI is more permissive for punctuation
characters. Some other minor bugs were corrected.

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Calc is arbitrary precision arithmetic system that uses a C-like
language. It's useful as a calculator, an algorithm prototype, and as a
mathematical research tool. More importantly, calc provides a
machine-independent means of computation. Calc comes with a rich set of
builtin mathematical and programmatic functions.
Changes: calc may be built with static or dynamic shared libraries. The
Makefiles were overhauled to use system targets. Static and extern
variables are declared with CPP symbols. The calc library makes it easier
to control parse and scan messages. Makefile.simple was added for hosts
without GNU Make. Custom registers were added. Support for MD5 and SHA-0
hashes was dropped. calc supports real and complex exponentiation bases
and exponents.

[008] - Cntlm 0.34
by David Kubicek (http://freshmeat.net/users/mavey/)
Sun, Sep 2nd 2007 07:35
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Security
System :: Networking
About: Cntlm is an NTLM/NTLM2SR/NTLMv2 authenticating HTTP proxy. It takes
the address of your parent proxy (or proxies) and opens a listening socket,
forwarding each request to it (moving on in a circular list if the active
parent proxy stops working). Along the way, a connection to the parent is
created anew and authenticated or, if available, a previously cached
connection is reused to achieve higher efficiency and faster responses.
When the chain is set up, cntlm should be used as the primary proxy in
your applications.
Changes: NTLMv2 and NTLM2 Session Response (NTLMv1.5) authentication types
were implemented, and were tested against Windows and Samba. All existing
NTLM versions are supported now. Password-less configuration is possible.
The NTLM config required for your proxy is automatically detected. NTLM
flags and versions can be manually overridden. Transparent handling of GFI
WebMonitor AV scanner for ISA, workstation name detection, SuSE RPM
support, and easy compilation were added. Various non-critical bugs were
fixed.

[010] - dbmstools 0.4.4-rc1
by John Dickson (http://freshmeat.net/users/captsens/)
Sun, Sep 2nd 2007 05:41
Database
Database :: Front-Ends
About: The dbmstools module exists mainly for developers who need to
support applications on more than one database management system (DBMS).
It's intended to allow all the database information (schema and base data)
to be kept in one single place, and to have DBMS-specific scripts (for
creating and populating the database schema, and upgrading from one
version to the next) generated from that data. It can generate schema
documentation for any DBMS (including diagrams), and can export data from
a database in several formats. It also has wrappers for several tools so
that they can be run from within Apache Ant. It supports PostgreSQL 7 and
8, Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, and Hypersonic (limited support).
Changes: This version adds explicit support for column defaults and
auto-increment columns, "tiny" and "boolean" data types, as well as
sequences on the Hypersonic DBMS. MySQL support has been improved,
particularly in generating upgrade scripts with deltaddl. The usual slew
of small bugfixes and improvements were made.

Documentation
Education
Internet
About: The goal of Hilbert II, which is in the tradition of Hilbert's
program, is the creation of a system that enables a working mathematician
to put theorems and proofs (in the formal language of predicate calculus)
into it. These proofs are automatically verified by a proof checker.
Because this system is not centrally administered and enables references
to any location on the Internet, a world wide mathematical knowledge base
could be built. It also contains information in "common mathematical
language".
Changes: This release has a completely new GUI. It has a tree that shows
all QEDEQ modules and visualizes their state by certain icons. Now it is
even possible to load QEDEQ modules from the Internet. Not all previous
features are integrated yet and some behavior is still not very smooth,
but this release is a good basis for further development.

Sun, Sep 2nd 2007 05:38
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: nmdb is a network database (dbm-style) that can use multiple
protocols to communicate with its clients. TIPC, TCP, UDP, and SCTP are
currently supported. It consists of an in-memory cache that saves (key,
value) pairs, and a persistent backend that stores the pairs on disk. Both
work in combination, but the use of the backend is optional, so you can use
the server only for cache queries, pretty much like memcached.
Changes: Ruby, Bigloo Scheme, and Haskell bindings were added. Optional
support for BerkeleyDB was added. An atomic "increment" operation was
implemented. Support for the SCTP protocol was added. Logging support was
implemented. Several non-critical bugs were fixed.

Del.icio.us, Mozilla, Opera, and XBEL bookmarks, and handles a few more
exports besides. Directories and tags are used equivalently, and the final
hierarchies are inferred from actual tag use.

[046] - strongSwan 4.1.6
by Andreas Steffen (http://freshmeat.net/users/asteffen/)
Sun, Sep 2nd 2007 23:25
Security
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking
About: strongSwan is a complete IPsec and IKEv1 implementation for Linux
2.4 and 2.6 kernels. It also fully supports the new IKEv2 protocol with
Linux 2.6 kernels. It interoperates in both IKEv1 and IKEv2 mode with most
other IPsec-based VPN products. The focus of the strongSwan project is on
strong authentication mechanisms using X.509 public key certificates and
optional secure storage of private keys on smartcards through a
standardized PKCS#11 interface. A unique feature is the use of X.509
attribute certificates to implement advanced access control schemes based
on group memberships.
Changes: The IKEv2 MOBIKE protocol can now be disabled on a per-connection
basis using the mobike=no parameter in ipsec.conf. The
--enable-integrity-test compile option computes a SHA-1 HMAC over the
dynamic libstrongswan library which the IKEv2 daemon uses to verify the
integrity of the crypto functions during runtime.

Sun, Sep 2nd 2007 06:16
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: The sysstat package contains the sar, sadf, iostat, mpstat, and
pidstat commands for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system
activity information. The statistics reported by sar concern I/O transfer
rates, paging activity, process-related activites, interrupts, network
activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU utilization, kernel
activities, and TTY statistics, among others. The sadf command may be used
to display data collected by sar in various formats. The iostat command
reports CPU statistics and I/O statistics for tty devices and disks. The
pidstat command reports statistics for Linux processes. The mpstat command
reports global and per-processor statistics.
Changes: The pidstat command is now able to report CPU and page fault
statistics for the child processes of a task. A security flaw in the
sysstat startup script was fixed. The super*, dquot*, and rtsig* fields
were removed from sar -v (since they were made obsolete in Linux kernels
2.6). The pty-nr field (number of pseudo-terminals) was added to sar -v.
The tcp-tw field (number of sockets in TIME_WAIT state) was added to sar
