[001] - Absolute OS 12.0.4
  by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
  Mon, Sep 3rd 2007 14:03

About: Absolute is a lightweight Slackware Linux derivative distribution
that uses an Icewm, ROX-Filer window/file manager combination. It comes
with Firefox, The GIMP, MPlayer, K3B, kTorrent, Gaim, Frostwire, Gftp,
StarDict, Skype, and many other titles all set up and ready to run.
Several utilities are included to ease configuration and management. It is
compatible with all Slackware 11 packages and can be installed just like a
Slackware disk, except that you cannot choose which packages to install or
remove, as it just installs everything.

Changes: The kernel source was misconfigured (to compile against), and
kernel size was too large for older PCs. This has been fixed. The source
code for ROX was altered for nice interface additions, NTFS read-write was
implemented, and K3B now works for user accounts without any extra
configuration.

[002] - Adaptive Quality of Service Architecture 0.3.0 (aquosa-monitor)
  by cucinotta (http://freshmeat.net/users/cucinotta/)
  Mon, Sep 3rd 2007 03:57

Multimedia
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: AQuoSA is an open architecture for the provisioning of adaptive
Quality of Service functionality into the Linux kernel. The project
features a flexible, portable, and lightweight software architecture for
supporting QoS-related services on top of a general-purpose operating
system as Linux. The architecture is well founded on formal scheduling
analysis and control theoretical results. At the core of the software is
an adaptive Resource Reservation layer that is capable of dynamically
adapting the CPU allocation for QoS-aware applications based on their
run-time requirements.

Changes: It is now possible to enclose threads (besides processes) in a
reservation. There is one more tab that allows servers and tasks enclosed
within to be graphically managed. In fact, with simple drag and drop
operations, it is possible to move processes or threads (tasks) across
servers.

Database :: API
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: aurora framework is a slim modular MVC framework written in PHP5
for rapid development of Web or console applications featuring an
integrated database API, template logic, pretty URLs,
internationalization, caching, data models, and a multi-layered file tree.

Changes: URLs can now be named and called within templates. A bug within
the DB API where a query could destroy a collection was fixed. Models now
ignore empty values so that you can't add empty elements to an m2m-list
(so model-example works again).

Software Development :: Compilers

About: AMPC compiles C programs directly into Java bytecode to run on any
platform where a Java runtime is available. AMPC can also be used to
integrate C and Java programs since AMPC's C functions can directly call
numerous Java methods and vice versa. AMPC supports ANSI C 1989 (ISO
1990). A JNI (JVM Native Interface) feature is available for calling
native C or C++ functions. AMPC supports the C standard library as well as
TCP/IP, ODBC, and graphics libraries. J2ME CDC 1.1 for mobile devices is
also supported.

Changes: Error handling of parameter passing of struct/union variables was
improved.

  by Matt Domsch (http://freshmeat.net/users/mdomsch/)
  Mon, Sep 3rd 2007 07:12

System :: Hardware
System :: Systems Administration

About: biosdevname in its simplest form takes a kernel device name as an
argument, and returns the BIOS-given name it "should" be. This is
necessary on systems where the BIOS name for a given device (e.g. the
label on the chassis is "Gb1") doesn't map directly and obviously to the
kernel name (e.g. eth0).

Changes: libbiosdevname and the libsysfs dependency were eliminated.
Packaging for Fedora and OpenSUSE RPMs and integration with udev 114 were
improved.

[014] - Decimail Server 0.14
  by Phil Endecott (http://freshmeat.net/users/endecotp/)
  Mon, Sep 3rd 2007 14:00

Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Database

About: Decimail Server is a mail server supporting IMAP and SMTP that uses
a PostgreSQL database to store messages. Mailboxes are defined using SQL
queries, allowing complex client-independent automatic message filtering
and categorisation. For example you can partition your messages
chronologically, by correspondent, and by mailing list at the same time,
with each message appearing in several mailboxes. You can also use
PostgreSQL's text indexing extension for fast keyword searching. Decimail
also features anti-spam processing of outgoing messages.

Changes: This version fixes a couple of bugs in the daemons that had
prevented operation with mutt and could lead to infinite loops while
receiving mail. It also replaces the three database tables for to, cc, and
bcc addresses with a single 'recipients' table, which simplifies many
database queries.

Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)

About: DutchPIPE allows Web developers to make virtual multi-user "avatar"
environments. Each Web page becomes an abstracted environment or location
where visitors and other items on the page are visualized. This status is
retained as visitors move around. A lot of real-time interaction is
possible, resulting in persistent interactive page environments. DutchPIPE
uses AJAX and the DOM for the browser, and it works without Java, Flash,
plugins, or firewall adjustments.

Changes: Users can now upload their own avatar using a new AJAX upload
feature. There are improvements in object image handling.

About: ESMTP is a user-configurable relay-only MTA with a
sendmail-compatible syntax, based on libESMTP and supporting the AUTH
(including the CRAM-MD5 and NTLM SASL mechanisms) and StartTLS SMTP
extensions.

Changes: This release handles CR-LF newline endings when parsing the
headers. It has a wrapper script for offline mail delivery. It documents
how to get CA certificates. There are corrections to the man pages. Tips
for adding missing Date: headers in messages for local delivery. A
reasonable default for the reverse path is used when one is not specified,
instead of an empty one. A segfault when expanding %F in the MDA string
when the reverse path is not specified has been fixed.

About: Holtz is an implementation of the abstract strategy games Zèrtz and
Dvonn from the GIPF project. Zertz is about placing and capturing marbles
on a shrinking board. Dvonn is about moving stacks of pieces. The higher
the stack, the faster it moves, so the tension increases until the very
end. Holtz allows playing locally, over a TCP/IP network, or against a
rudimentary AI. It also offers some user hints for an easy start into the
game.

Changes: Zertz and Dvonn are supported. This release has a more robust

  Mon, Sep 3rd 2007 04:23

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Nuface is a Web-based administration tool that generates Edenwall,
NuFW, or simple Netfilter firewall rules. It features a high level
abstraction on the security policy set by the administrator, and works
internally on an XML data scheme. Its philosophy is to let you agglomerate
subjects, resources, or protocols into meta-objects, and use those meta
objects to generate ACLs, which are then interpreted as netfilter rules by
Nupyf, the internal XML parser. This tool may easily be extended to support
firewall implementations other than Netfilter.

Changes: A new option, "$disable_check_net", was introduced for tricky
network topologies. A bug in index where language persists through the
session was fixed. Support for IPSEC VPN integration was added. Various
interface bugs were fixed, especially for 100% non-NuFW firewalls.

  by Ciobi (http://freshmeat.net/users/ciobi07/)
  Mon, Sep 3rd 2007 14:04

Software Development :: Libraries

About: QuickFunctor is a C++ functor library with many improvements over
the standard-provided implementation, as well as over some competing
implementations in Boost, TR1, or Loki. Its strong points are
arithmetic/boolean expressions with functors, a pretty complete set of

About: Vortex Library is a BEEP Core protocol implementation, following
the standard defined in RFC 3080 and RFC 3081. It has a clean and
easy-to-use API that allows you to write new application protocols very
quickly. Vortex Library has been developed within the Af-Arch project, and
it is being used at the data transport layer. However, Vortex Library can
be used independently of Af-Arch.

Changes: Updates to the BEEP session connection to control default TCP
timeout were included. A missing feature that now allows you to properly
handle cross close in transit is also included, allowing BEEP peers to
issue a channel close at the same time. The frame dispatching and send
reply code have been updated not to block the caller if a wrong deliver
order is found, but to store that frame, unlock the caller, and to perform
such delivery later. Some minor bugs were fixed and the regression tests
were updated. A set of new functions have been also added.
