[001] - AgileWiki 0.4 (COODBMS)
  by Bill la Forge (http://freshmeat.net/users/laforge49/)
  Sun, Feb 3rd 2008 07:45

Database
Documentation
Information Management

About: AgileWiki is a program that explores new knowledge representation.
It is an attempt to implement, at least in part, Norm Kashdan's Rolonic
Theory, a profoundly different approach to time and knowledge
representation. CowDb is a high-speed object store over which the next
generation of AgileWiki will be written. COODBMS is a Copy-on-write OODBMS
based on Rolonics.

Changes: Rolons can now be tagged with, and accessed by, keywords.
Structures are now created dynamically as needed, making Rolons much
lighter-weight as not every Rolon needs the full structure. Headlines
(titles) can now be attached to every Rolonic element.

[002] - Aloofix 0.5
  by Aloof Schipperke (http://freshmeat.net/users/aloofschipperke/)
  Sun, Feb 3rd 2008 16:28

System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions

About: Aloofix is conceptually similar to the Ubuntu JeOS (Just enough
OS), but much more aggressive when it comes to the term "just enough". The
build environment consists of a collection of Makefiles, scripts, and
configuration files capable of creating a bootable ISO image. This ISO
image contains a small set of scripts and utility programs for installing
Aloofix on a primary hard drive in a VM environment. The build environment
provides the raw materials for creating and provisioning a set of guest
instances for VirtualBox, VMWare, and Qemu.

Changes: The release status has moved from alpha to beta. Version bumps
have been done for Linux 2.6.24 and e2fsprogs 1.40.5. Support for non-root
users has been improved. The command line options -cd/-nocd have been added
to manager scripts to control whether the CD is attached at boot time.
Booting from the hard drive boot loader no longer presents a boot menu,
but proceeds directly to booting the kernel. Basic support for inclusion
of add-on packages has been added. There are numerous bugfixes, cleanups,
and improvements.

[013] - Flexible Isometric Fallout-like Engine 2008.0
  by mvBarracuda (http://freshmeat.net/users/mvbarracuda/)
  Sun, Feb 3rd 2008 17:01

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy

About: Flexible Isometric Fallout-like Engine (FIFE) is a cross-platform
2D game creation framework. Games can be created with a combination of
engine, editor tools, game specific scripts, and game content (e.g. maps,
graphics, and sounds). The framework is not tied to any type of game (e.g.
RTS, RPG), but instead provides a flexible platform for all of them. It
supports different isometric views and a pure top-down view. Instead of
full 3D flexibility, the engine focuses mainly on using high quality 2D
graphics. This puts fewer demands on target platforms and also simplifies
the framework and game development.

Changes: A new audio module with support for some more advanced audio
features. Optimized view code to improve the performance and resolve map
instance z-order issues. This release has switched back to island_demo
concept, which will be the example game that ships with future FIFE
releases as well. Routing pathfinding has been added (the previous release
only had a linear pather). A pluggable rendering system and several new
plugins are included. There is a new editor tool that can be used to lay
out maps, and miscellaneous XML map format improvements. This release has
a vastly improved pychan extension and XML-based GUI definitions.

  Sun, Feb 3rd 2008 23:58

Education
Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Chemistry

About: GAMGI (General Atomistic Modelling Graphic Interface) is a program
to build, view, and analyze atomic strucures such as molecules, crystals,
glasses, liquids, etc. It aims to be useful for: the scientific community
working in Atomistic Modelling that needs a graphic interface to build
input data and to view and analyse output data, calculated with Ab-Initio
and Molecular Mechanics programs; the scientific community at large
studying chemistry, physics, materials science, geology, etc., that needs
a graphic interface to view and analyse atomic structural information and
to prepare images for presentations in classes and seminars; teaching
chemistry and physics in secondary schools and universities; science
promotion in schools, exhibitions and science museums.

Changes: Isotopic data (masses, abundances, half-life times) and radius
data (natural element atom-atom distances, effective and calculated atomic
radius, covalent, van der Walls) are grabbed. The widely used Shannon ionic
radius (depending on valence, coordination, and spin) is grabbed. All this
data is not available yet for final users (except covalent radius).
glib_gtk_gtkgl.tar.gz was prepared, which contains all the old glib, gtk,
and gtkglarea .h and .so files needed to compile GAMGI on x86, x86_64, and
ppc architectures. A bug in Plane->Create was fixed.

emulation of some TinyFugue editor controls. JamochaMUD includes classes
that may be easily reused in other Java applications.

Changes: This version cleans up a couple of user interface issues and a
troublesome bug that appeared on some platforms. JamochaMUD should now
correctly launch a double-clicked URL on Windows as well as Mac OS X and
Linux. Double-clicked URLs are now deselected (un-highlighted) once the
browser is launched. Copying text to the clipboard no longer results in
the MU* output scrolling back to the beginning. There has been some
significant internal refactoring of inter-class communication to support
the future implementation of shell scripts.

[024] - Java Classic RPG 2008-02-03
  by skrionius (http://freshmeat.net/users/skrionius/)
  Sun, Feb 3rd 2008 16:31

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: Java Classic RPG is an RPG framework, engine, and game that uses
OpenGL, a challenging AI, huge territories, and classic pen-and-paper
turn-based combat. It is in the tradition of games like Wizardry 7 and
EOB, but incorporates innovations made possible by modern computing
technology. The framework and engine feature a self-containing, playable,
algorithmically-generated world, and can be the base for new games.

Changes: An ecology system and ecology generation with 3 types of animal
packs (gorilla, wolf, and warthog) were added. An encounters system draft
version was implemented. World geography generation was boosted with the
addition of Cave and River. Animated /rigged model loading (Gorilla), text
box log, and choice box window have been added to UI elements. World map
colorization was extended. A 'UI ruining shadows' bug has been fixed.

Desktop Environment :: File Managers
Desktop Environment :: Tools
Security :: Cryptography

About: Javeau is a small tool meant to provide an easy way to create and
use encrypted directories, using strong cryptography and a simple
interface. It works under Java 6. Data stored in these folders are
encrypted and safe (using 256 bit encryption); they can be accessed only
by the user (by providing the password used to create the folder), and
their integrity is checked to prevent data tampering. The application
sports a convenient file-manager-like interface, is very fast and small,
and is completely cross-platform: you can access your encrypted storage
everywhere you can run a Java 6 VM.

Changes: This second release focuses on robustness. The random number
generator is seeded with true randomness from www.randomnumbers.info if an
Internet connection is available. The application locks a secure folder on
access to prevent concurrent modifications. A backup of the index file is
created when saving, for added robustness. Many minor UI fixes have been
made.

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of
user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can
access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs
are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so
scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it seems dangerous,
the safety of the kernel can be ensured through such methods as static type
checking, software fault isolation, and so forth.

  by Bogdan Radulescu (http://freshmeat.net/users/nimblex/)
  Sun, Feb 3rd 2008 12:22

System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions :: CD-Based

About: NimbleX is a small but versatile operating system that is able to
boot from a small 8cm CD, USB, or from the network. It doesn’t require
installation or even much hardware. It is based on Slackware with the use
of Linux live scripts, which provides it with thousands of free software
packages that can be downloaded from the Internet. It has a GUI, a lot of
built in software for browsing the Internet, writing documents, listening
to music, playing movies, and more. It also has basic server
functionality.

Changes: The major highlights are the Experimental Safe Installer, better
LZM compression, a split into 5 pieces, 9 desktop environments, and many
other things. The Experimental Safe Installer is a very important addition
that allows people with XP, and in the future with other distributions, to
make a "one key hit" safe deployment to the HDD. Other significant
additions are the GIMP, XINE, Firefox, XMMS, GParted, ClamAV, and support

  by Arthur (http://freshmeat.net/users/tiearthur/)
  Sun, Feb 3rd 2008 16:47

System :: Networking :: LDAP
System :: Systems Administration

About: nss-ldapd is a (glibc) NSS module for doing name lookups to an LDAP
server. This module allows retrieval of information about Unix accounts,
groups, hosts, and other information from an LDAP directory. It is a fork
from the nss_ldap module to do some architectural changes. This
implementation splits the functionality into an NSS part and a local
daemon to do the lookups. This works around a number of problems in the
original implementation.

Changes: This release adds support for the uniqueMember LDAP attribute,
using the module with the compat service, groups with a large number of
members, and implements the initgroups() function to allow username to
groups lookups. A bug in the parsing of the map option, a bug in the
reporting of communication failures between the daemon and the NSS
library, and a problem parsing userPassword values were fixed. Several
compatibility improvements were made to make porting to other LDAP
libraries and platforms easier, and general testing and debugging of
problems was improved.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: OpenMocha is an JavaScript application server and development
framework that supports quick soft-coding and clean hard-coding in
Javascript on the client- and server-side. New projects can be quickly
soft-coded by creating custom Mocha Objects using the Web browser. As the
project matures, these Mocha Objects can be re-factored and hard-coded in
separate code files. The two approaches can be mixed at any time, patching
hard-coded applications through soft-coding even during runtime. It intends
to stretch and scale between fast all-in-one deployment and complex
integration in best-of-breed environments.

Changes: This release adds support for fetchlets, Javascript functions
that are invoked on the client side but run on the server side. The
rhino.debug property for the exampleapp has been turned back on, since the
debugger is now working again. Page has been changed to Scaffold in order
to work around a problem where the page prototype overrode the one in an
application's main repository if the jhino module was added via an
app.addRepository call. A workaround has been added for Helma bug #598,
which caused onInit on the root object to fail. rhino and helma have been
updated with debugger-related bugfixes, and support for fetchlets has been
added.

[047] - record_locking 0.01
  by Kort E Patterson (http://freshmeat.net/users/kort/)
  Sun, Feb 3rd 2008 19:20

About: record_locking uses a variation on the AJAX/Web 2.0 method of
asynchronous Javascript Web page updating to maintain the record lock on
the server. Opening a record for editing launches a background Javascript
process in the user's browser that checks the status of the record lock
every 10 seconds. Each status check updates the lock timestamp, confirming
that the user is still connected and actively editing the record. Locks are
normally released when the user saves the record or navigates to a
different screen. If the user fails to properly close/release the record
(abandons the record or his browser crashes), locks go stale if not
updated for 5 minutes. The next status request or attempt to lock the
record will delete or overwrite any stale lock.

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements
and operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.

Changes: The compiler (comp.sd7) was improved to allow the compilation of
itself. The compiler now compiles the programs rever.sd7 and sl.sd7. The
scanner.s7i library was renamed to scanfile.s7i. The libraries dialog.s7i,
scanstri.s7i, and charsets.s7i were added and the libraries complex.s7i and
scanfile.s7i were improved. The hasNext function, which allows an iterator
like handling of files, was added to the file interface. The bigAddTemp
and bigSbtrTemp functions were added to allow optimized bigInteger
operations in the compiler. The bas7.sd7 (basic interpreter) example
program was improved.

[053] - Shake 0.30
  by un_brice (http://freshmeat.net/users/unbrice/)
  Sun, Feb 3rd 2008 05:19

System :: Filesystems

About: Shake is a defragmenter that runs in user-space while the system is
in use (for now, on GNU/Linux only), without the need to patch the kernel,
and without the need to patch the kernel. Unlike xfs_fsr, it only uses
functions common to all filesystems. It aims to evaluate the cost of
fragmentation based on criteria such as fragment number, distance from
"friends" (by default, a group of files used at the same time), file age
(rewriting old files allow the filesystem to reclaim free space), file
size, and number of "crumbs" (very small fragments that force the head to
move repetetively). A Python module that parses the output of the verbose
mode is included.

Changes: The size unit was changed to kilobytes. Unnecessary get_ptime()
calls were removed. The code was cleaned up. A workaround against ld
behavior was added. A signal handler that tries to keep files as safe as
it can was added. A Debian package was added. Support for posix_fadvise()
was added. A crash on files ending with a hole was fixed. A new build
system is featured.

[056] - STUBS and Franki/Earlgrey Linux 0.9.3-3 (STUBS Scripts)

  Sun, Feb 3rd 2008 05:45

System :: Operating System
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions :: CD-Based

About: The STUBS Toolchain and Utility Build Suite is a set of scripts
designed to build one or more software packages by means of a pre-written
set of configuration files. Each configuration file encapsulates the
necessary build and install commands for a given package, and URLs are
included so source and patches can be downloaded as necessary. STUBS is
designed to both bootstrap and work within the Franki/Earlgrey Linux
environment (an extensible busybox and uClibc-based Linux boot floppy
produced by one of several example STUBS configurations).

Changes: This Scripts release makes "pkglist" an argument of the "query"
utility rather than a separate script. The previous "pkglist" behavior of
printing relative file paths where possible was restored. This release
fully obsoletes other 0.9.3* versions.

[057] - synDirectory 0.11
  by Ólafur Waage (http://freshmeat.net/users/avalean/)
  Sun, Feb 3rd 2008 05:48

Internet

About: synDirectory is used to retrieve and sort the current work
directory list of of files. It opens the current directory and retrieves
the list of files and sub-directories into separate arrays. Since it may
be listing the directory where this package was installed, the package
files are excluded from the listing. The arrays with the files and
directories may be sorted by name, file size, file type, or last modified
date. The package comes with a configuration file to help the user
customize the output further. It is also possible to skin the output via
CSS.

Changes: The icon files no longer display like they should have if you are
using the same location for them as the directory you are listing.

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: "sysstat" complements Solaris' system tools for performance
analysis. It presents all key performance metrics on a VT100 terminal and
has the possibility to toggle its view between different hosts.

Changes: This release adds the statistic "ZFS ARC size", fixes an invalid
assertion in the filesystem statistics code, and handles wraparound of
statistic values gracefully.

[059] - Texterize 0.1.2
  by Joost Remijn (http://freshmeat.net/users/remijn/)
  Sun, Feb 3rd 2008 04:54

Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing

About: Texterize is a text and metadata extraction tool and library which
can be used to quickly get the text content of a file. It currently
supports file formats like PDF, Excel, Powerpoint, Word, RTF, WordPerfect,
MP3, Ogg, and all OpenDocument file formats. The output of texterize is
either text or XML. It is also designed to work with Unicode input and
output, and the default output character set is UTF-8. Texterize also has
a recursive mode so that whole directories (or whole filesystems) can be
converted to text. This recursion also works through archive files and
compressed files like zip, tar, and gz files.

Changes: Many crashes found through fuzzing were fixed. Some major PDF
bugs were fixed (including a font parser bug introduced in 0.1.1). The
configure script was improved (no more forced CFLAGS).
