Open Source Software Testing Beyond Java

As mentioned in my previous article on Open Source software testing tools,
I am going to provide an overview of some more test tools hosted by
SourceForge and continue to demonstrate how they can improve the quality
and productivity of a development effort. The previous article focused on
testing tools that can be used for applications written in Java and
Web-based applications. This article will provide an overview of testing
tools for SOAP, databases, Testing suites/frameworks, .Net, and Linux,
among others. Some interesting new Java testing tools have also been
developed since the time I wrote the previous article, and I would like to
include them. Like the previous article, this one will focus primarily on
functional testing tools.

client/server based application for deploying software packages with a Web
frontend. The Web frontend in conjunction with the server enables sysadmins

directly. 

Changes: Some major errors have been fixed. This version was tested
successfully for more than one year in a production environment and should
be very stable.

RoleML. RoleML script now supports several iterators for navigating the
database. Extending COODBMS to add application logic is covered in a new
programmer guide.

About: Arno's IPTABLES Firewall Script is a secure stateful firewall for
both single and multi-homed machines. It supports NAT and SNAT, port
forwarding, ADSL ethernet modems with both static and dynamically assigned
IPs, MAC address filtering, stealth port scan detection, DMZ support,
protection against SYN/ICMP flooding, experimental IPv6 support,
multi-interface/aliased-IP support, and extensive user definable logging
with rate limiting to prevent log flooding. It has plugin support to add
extra features (like SSH Brute Force protection and (Racoon) IPSEC
support). It is easy to configure and highly customizable. A filter script
that makes your firewall log more readable is also included.

Changes: The $LOCAL_CONFIG_FILE variable was added to allow, for example,
certain user/global/local settings to be sourced into the script. The
plugin code was moved from custom rules into the main script. The plugin
system was enhanced. Several plugins were updated. Multiroute now has a
proper stop() section. /proc/.../ conntrack set was fixed for newer
kernels.

About: BeanKeeper (formerly Simple Persistence for Java) is a full
featured, powerful object/relational persistence and query library. It has
a unique philosophy of simpleness and ease of use: it does not require
config files, annotations, code generation, code "enhancing", or any kind
of tools to be used. It handles simple Java beans (or POJOs) and its query
service returns lists. Despite its simpleness, under the hood the library
takes care of all the necessary logic: transaction visibility, result list

About: bftpd is a very configurable Linux FTP server which can do chroot
without special configuration or directory preparation. It will work
out-of-the-box with almost no configuration required, and works on all
Unix variants tested. Most FTP commands are supported, and user
authentication is done via passwd/shadow or PAM. tar/gzip on-the-fly is
supported.

Changes: This release brings two small bugfixes to Bftpd. The first fixes
permissions applied to newly created directories. The other fix prevents
crashes that may occur when reading certain configuration files.

About: Ctcompare allows you to compare several sets of C or Java code
trees on a token basis, rather than on a line by line basis. These
programs help to identify code copying and similarities between snippets
of code in both trees, even if the actual lines are dissimilar.

Changes: ctcompare's speed has been doubled, with some hand-coding of the
hotspot loops. A new database has been added, with read speeds comparable
to Berkeley DB 4, but with faster write speeds. Compile-time support for
code comparisons within a source tree has been added.

About: JGame is a 2D game engine that runs on any Java JRE 1.2+ platform
(with optional OpenGL enhancements through JOGL), and the mobile J2ME
platform (CLDC1.1/MIDP2.0). It provides a high-level framework, enabling
"classic" type arcade games to be developed with a minimum of code and
effort. It is based on sprites with automatic animation and collision
detection, and a tile-based background with easy sprite-tile interaction
facilities. JGame games can be run with Web Start, as applets, or as
MIDlets, without requiring any changes in the code. Graphics are scaled
automatically to fit any screen size.  

Changes: OpenGL (JOGL) support has been added. OpenGL enhancements include
shaded polygons, alpha blending, and real-time scaled and rotated sprites.
Also included is video-synchronized variable frame rate support. A new
game, Ogrotron, has been added.

About: Linux Kiss Server is an alternative for PC-LINK software. It is
compatible with the latest Kiss player DP-600. It makes the selected
directory accessible for Kiss players. It can run either as a daemon or in
the foreground. It can answer Kiss player queries for a PC-LINK server. It
can disable UDP binding completely, so that it doesn't respond to Kiss
player "looking for PC-LINK server" queries. The default server port can
be overridden. 

Changes: Files larger than 2GB are now supported in that they are listed
and can be played. The limitation on the number of files in a folder was
increased from 255 to 1024.

About: Maitreya is an application for Western and Vedic Astrology
(Jyotish). The Vedic part supports many parts of classical Vedic astrology

About: Marauroa is a multiplayer online game framework server. It uses a
multithreaded server architecture with a UDP oriented network protocol, a
MySQL based persistence engine, and a flexible game system. The game
system is totally expandable and modifiable by game developers and is able
to run Python scripts defining the game's rules. Marauroa is based on a
design philosophy called Action/Perception. Marauroa is totally game
agnostic and makes very little assumptions about what are you trying to
do, allowing a great freedom to create any game type. 

Changes: A timeout value was added, so players get disconnected after 30
seconds if their connection is lost. The protocol version was updated. A
problem with a player left in a game was fixed. Some
concurrentcomodification exceptions that can be used to make a DoS attack
on the server were also fixed. If you are using marauroa, update to this
version.

About: MathMap is a GIMP plugin and a commandline tool which allows
distortion of images and animations specified by mathematical formulae.
For each pixel in the generated image, a script is evaluated which should
return a pixel value. The script can either refer to a pixel in the source
image or can generate pixels completely independent of the source. MathMap
not only allows the generation of still images but also of animations.

Changes: Compositions can now be saved and used inside other compositions.
Filters can be called with all types of arguments. Several filters have
been added, including almost all GIMP layer modes. Bugs have been fixed.

About: Online Chess Club is a PHP chess game. It allows you to play any
number of games simultaneously against your friends online using only a
Web browser, provided you own some PHP-ready Web space. It recognizes

Changes: Buttons for all special commands have been added, and the now
useless move input element has been hidden. Thus, moves and commands are
now solely entered by clicking on the chessboard or appropriate buttons.

About: Qtractor is an Audio/MIDI multi-track sequencer application. The
initial target platform is Linux, using the infrastructure of the Jack

desktop audio workstation GUI, specially dedicated to the personal home

using the Arianne game development system. It features a rich and

network and stop the spread of malware. Detection is based on the fact

About: Webupdate is a script which lets you register Web pages and monitor
them for updates. An email alert is sent to your local account whenever an
update is found. It is also possible to register a pipe of commands to
filter which content on the Web page should actually trigger an alert. The
script can be used with crontab to get regular notifications whenever
registered Web pages are updated. 

Changes: A bug related to $SIG{ALRM} was fixed.

About: wiki2xhtml can create complete Web pages and uses a clean XHTML
syntax. It can insert galleries, a menu, a footer, and nearly all elements
you know from the Wikipedia. The pages are formatted with CSS. All designs
can be adjusted by hand, and custom ones can be used as well. wiki2xhtml
generates the HTML pages from simple text files in the MediaWiki syntax.
You can also use own (X)HTML code or other script languages inside; there
are no restrictions. The GUI is composed of a Code Paste Window where you
can insert wiki code that will be generated live. A click into the result,
the XHTML code, copies it into the clipboard.

Changes: This version is multi-lingual. It supports split pages and
redirects, exports .sh and .bat scripts, and has an adjusted GUI. Some
parts have been rewritten (the comments system, lists, headings, and
tables) and now work better, and some bugs with links have been fixed.
