[001] - Absolute OS 12.1 Beta 8
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Sun, Feb 24th 2008 17:39
About: Absolute is a lightweight Slackware Linux derivative distribution
that uses an Icewm, ROX-Filer window/file manager combination. It comes
with Firefox, The GIMP, MPlayer, K3B, kTorrent, Gaim, Frostwire, Gftp,
StarDict, Skype, and many other titles all set up and ready to run.
Several utilities are included to ease configuration and management. It is
compatible with all Slackware 11 packages and can be installed just like a
Slackware disk, except that you cannot choose which packages to install or
remove, as it just installs everything.
Changes: Documention has been reconstructed. Firefox is 3.0b4 (Minefield).
Unlike 3.0b3, it has not given any errors in early testing. Sylpheed has
been updated to 2.2.8, and gtkspell installed to suppport spell checking
in Sylpheed. Icewm was updated to 1.2.35. Menus have been rebuilt to
support the new documentation model. A new default theme. The kernel
setting for CD locking is changed in a new file: /etc/sysctl.conf. Now you
can push the button on the CD-ROM without calling umount.. The
find_installed script utility has been fixed. setDate.py and gdeskcal have
both been modified to prevent the running of multiple instances.

Text Processing :: Indexing
About: Apache Lucene is a high-performance, full-featured text search
engine library written entirely in Java. It is suitable for nearly any
application that requires full-text search, especially cross-platform.
Changes: This version contains fixes for serious bugs in 2.3.0 that could
cause index corruptions in autoCommit=false mode or in cases where
multiple threads are adding documents where some have term-vector enabled
fields and some don't. The autoCommit option was added to IndexWriter with
release 2.2.0. If not explicitly set to false, the IndexWriter runs in
autoCommit=true mode. This version does not contain any new features, API
or file format changes, which makes it fully compatible to 2.3.0.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: Growler is a general purpose, C++-based distributed object and
event architecture. Though general, its primary application has been in
support of collaborative visualization, computational steering, and
"concurrent visualization" (the visualization of supercomputer simulations
in progress). Growler's distributed object and event architecture is
suitable for application to high-performance LAN environments as well the
Internet. Its features include strong integration with C++, selective
distributed reference counting, and efficient well-typed event channels
for local and remote event broadcast.
Changes: Python bindings were added for some parts of Growler. Rotation
and scaling were added for 3x3 matrices. Bugs were fixed in buffer
management, mainly for infiniband. Other minor bugs were fixed.

About: hdparm is a Linux shell utility for viewing and manipulating
various IDE drive and driver parameters. Most drives can benefit from
improved performance using a command similar to "hdparm -qm8 -qu1 -qc1

Changes: Several fixes were made to ensure functionality with the
non-libata IDE driver again. Many features were broken and possibly
dangerous on earlier 7.x/8.x versions with the old IDE. Upgading is
strongly recommended. The display of udma6 mode was fixed. The program now
exits with a proper return code to ease scripting.

[032] - Himerge 0.17.3
by Luis Araujo (http://freshmeat.net/users/LuisAraujo/)
Sun, Feb 24th 2008 07:48
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
About: Himerge is a GUI for emerge (Gentoo's Portage system) written in
Haskell using gtk2hs. The main idea is to simplify browsing the entire
portage tree, and allow running the most basic and common options from the
emerge command. It also offers several handy tools, like global and local
use flags browsers, inspired by UFED (the Gentoo Linux USE flags editor).
It also uses eix (a small utility for searching ebuilds with indexing for
fast results) as a back-end command to show package information in
HTML/CSS format, so you can access a package's Web site for a quick
glance.
Changes: update-eix is run after each Sync and Metadata updating
operation, so the package database is automatically updated for the
browser views and search functions. The web package information window is
now updated on selecting packages from the different package queues and
the package versions view. A few functions have been refactored for
reducing complexity of code. A slight bug on showing a package action
operation in the package queues has been fixed.

[072] - When 1.1.11
by Ben Crowell (http://freshmeat.net/users/bcrowell/)
Sun, Feb 24th 2008 21:48
Office/Business :: Scheduling
About: When is an extremely simple personal calendar program, aimed at the
Unix geek who wants something minimalistic. It can keep track of things you
need to do on particular dates. It's a very short and simple program, so
you can easily tinker with it yourself. It doesn't depend on any
libraries, so it's easy to install. You should be able to install it on
any system where Perl is available, even if you don't have privileges for
installing libraries. Its file format is a simple text file, which you can
edit in your favorite editor.
Changes: The program now gives a more informative error message when the
calendar file is in some encoding that it doesn't understand, such as
ISO-8859.

Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals
About: The xterm program is the standard terminal emulator for the X
Window System. It provides DEC VT102/VT220 and Tektronix 4014 compatible
terminals for programs that can't use the window system directly. If the
underlying operating system supports terminal resizing capabilities (for
example, the SIGWINCH signal in systems derived from 4.3bsd), xterm will
use the facilities to notify programs running in the window whenever it is
resized.
Changes: An incorrect font-deallocation in patch #232 was fixed, as well
as some other, older bugs. No new features were added.

[074] - Zero Install Injector 0.32
by Thomas Leonard (http://freshmeat.net/users/tal197/)
Sun, Feb 24th 2008 04:58
Internet
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Software Distribution
About: The Zero Install Injector makes it possible for users to install
software easily and without the need for root privileges. It takes the URL
of a program's interface description and chooses suitable versions of the
program and all of its dependencies (also identified by URLs) according to
the user's policy settings (eg. "stable", "testing", "minimal network use",
etc). The chosen versions are downloaded and cached and the program is run,
using environment variables to let it find the components.
Changes: The graphical front-end has been redesigned to use fewer separate
dialog boxes. The Python API has been refactored to be more modular and
more flexible. Many error messages are now more helpful. A number of minor
bugs were fixed. An introductory video is now available on the front page.
