iPhone Development: Go Web, Young Programmer
by Andrew Reutter and Andrew Trent (http://journyx.com/)
Section: Tutorials
Sat, Feb 23rd 2008 00:00

Sometime this month -- according to the latest rumors, anyway -- we'll
find out why 2008 won't be like 2007. That's when Apple plans to release
the Software Development Kit (SDK) for their runaway hit Gadget of the
Century, the iPhone. As of this writing, no one outside of Cupertino can
really say what the SDK will include. It might well be the keys to the
kingdom. Then again, it might just prove to be the shackles that bind your
development future to Apple's fortunes. You see, if you as a developer
build your applications using the official iPhone SDK, then those apps are
bound to the platform, and being bound to the platform, of necessity,
limits your audience. That's seldom a good thing. Rather than going down
that path, why not consider something bolder? Why not strike out on your
own and build a Web-based application that looks as good as a native
iPhone app but that isn't beholden to Apple?

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: Aejaks is a windowing toolkit for rapid development of AJAX-enabled
Web applications. It combines the powerful simplicity of the Tcl language
with the Java-based Echo2 browser-independent windowing system. Aejaks
applications are written in a single scripting language, without need to
write any HTML, Javascript, or CSS. It borrows from the Tk windowing
system, but is not directly compatible with Tk. It runs on top of any Java
Web server, and can make use of any existing Java library.

Changes: Additional container widgets now provide absolute positioning of
child widgets. The table widget now allows custom cell and header
renderers. The Window setFocusedComponent method allows focus to be set on
a widget. The BrowserCommand setwaitms method sets an interval for the
browser "Please wait" message.

Database
Documentation
Information Management

About: AgileWiki is meant to create software systems which are fluid,
easily configured and can be reorganized on-the-fly to meet ever changing
requirements. It includes a COW-based database, the Rolonics programming
paradigm, and semantic inferencing.

Changes: eXpress, bind, and bindRolon opcode processing were added to
CNode. eXpress, bind, and bindRolon methods were added to DoModel. Bind
now fully supports keywords and children. Prior to a bind, the parents'
CSec must be removed. Document Rolon Model is now a separate jar file, a
first small step towards client/server. Methods on the DRM which add
actions to RoleML script now end in "_" to distinguish them from other,
similarly named methods. A new API, Common Object, sports many of the
methods of PObject, PNode, and CNode.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis

About: The aim of auch (audio-checker) is to visualize harmonics in
musical recordings. Many tools show the spectrum, but this tool focuses on
one or two specific octaves, with an indication of the tonica,
sub-dominant(IV), and dominant(V). This way, notes, chords, and harmonics
in a musical piece become clearer. It also supports other types of
transformation (like wavelets, surface waves, strings, resampling, etc).
Another feature is that this tool can compare incoming and outgoing audio
to test external filters.

Changes: This version adds the visualization of the propagation of waves
on a rope and "ether" (a different type of medium).

Actions, spam and virus filters, an address book, internationalization,
and much more.

Changes: The client now forbids attaching of anything containing "../" or

About: maildirproc is a program that processes one or several existing
mail boxes in the maildir format. It is primarily focused on mail sorting,
which means moving, copying, forwarding, and deleting mail according to a
set of rules. It can be seen as an alternative to procmail, but instead of
being a delivery agent (which wants to be part of the delivery chain),
maildirproc only processes mail which has already been delivered. That is
a feature, not a bug.

Changes: The maildir base directory now defaults to the current working

  by Claus Assmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/casmx/)
  Sat, Feb 23rd 2008 00:09

About: MeTA1 is a modularized message transfer agent (MTA) consisting of
five (or more) persistent processes, four of which are multi-threaded. A
queue manager controls SMTP servers and SMTP clients to receive and send
email messages, an address resolver provides lookups in various maps
(including DNS) for mail routing, and a main control program starts the
other processes and watches over their execution. The queue manager
organizes the flow of messages through the system and provides measures to
avoid overloading the local or remote systems by implementing a central
control instance. It is simple to configure using a C-like syntax and is
secure and efficient.

Changes: This release installs all necessary files to compile a pmilter
without referring to the MeTA1 source tree. It also logs a warning if
"RELAY" is found in access map for "from:" lookups and ignores the lookup.

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Shed Skin is an experimental Python-to-C++ compiler. It accepts
pure but implicitly statically typed Python programs and generates
optimized C++ code. This means that in combination with a C++ compiler, it
allows for translation of pure Python programs into highly efficient
machine language. For a set of 16 non-trivial test programs, measurements
show a typical speedup of 2-40 over Psyco, about 10 on average, and 2-220
over CPython, about 35 on average. Shed Skin also outputs annotated source
code.

Changes: Support was added for the re, time, fnmatch, and glob modules.
Basic support was added for the staticmethod and property functions. Mac
OS X is supported again (including extension modules). Support for
multi-dir/multi-file projects was improved. The compiler core was split
up. Several minor fixes and optimizations were made.

About: Test-Run is an improved test harness for scripts that emit TAP

it to the user in a summarized form. Test-Run features separation of the

About: Virtual Token Descriptor for eXtensible Markup Language (VTD-XML)
refers to a collection of efficient XML processing technologies centered
around a non-extractive XML parsing technique called Virtual Token
Descriptor (VTD). Depending on the perspective, VTD-XML can be viewed as
either an XML parser, a native XML indexer or a file format that uses
binary data to enhance the text XML, an incremental XML content modifier,
an XML slicer/splitter/assembler, or an XML editor/eraser.

Changes: VTDException is now introduced as the root class for all of
VTD-XML's exception classes. Transcoding capability is now added for
inter-document cut and paste. You can cut a chunk of bytes in a UTF-8
encoded document and paste it into a UTF-16 encoded document and the
output document is still well-formed. ISO-8859-10, ISO-8859-11,

are automatically removed from the database when a duplicate is found. It
will only rescan files if the creation time or last write time change. It
will only delete duplicated files if the parameter for deleting is used.
The default setting is to report only.

About: wview is an application that controls a supported weather station
to retrieve archive records and current conditions. Archive records may
optionally be stored in a relational database (MySQL or PostgreSQL). At a
user-defined interval, wview will use the archive history and current
conditions to generate weather images (buckets and graphs) and Web pages
based on configurable HTML templates. It supports serial and USB data
loggers, as well as connectivity with a terminal server or serial server
via TCP sockets.

Changes: A new configuration file "graphics.conf" was added to define
alternate graphics colors and sizes. Support was added in htmlGenerate.c
for these definitions. "graphics.conf" was made part of skin definitions,
so graphics can be customized by skin designers.
"examples/html/Template-Skins-HOWTO.txt" was updated to reflect changes
and better describe the skin creation process. A bug introduced in the
delayed CWOP submission logic of the 3.5.0 release was fixed. Support for
image background transparency was added.
