[001] - Addjob 0.05
by Jared Davis (http://freshmeat.net/users/aiken11/)
Wed, Feb 27th 2008 10:31
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: Addjob lets you distribute jobs over a network. You just run
"addjob-server", and then submit jobs like "addjob gcc -c foo.c". You can
still interact with your program via the command line, and exit-codes are
preserved, so it integrates well with Makefiles.
Changes: Some reliability improvements have been made. The server now
shuts down more gracefully, resolving a problem where it could not be
immediately restarted because host ports would still be unavailable. The
hosts wait for their ports to become available if they are already in use.

About: Anki is an intelligent, spaced-repetition flash card program
designed to maximize your memory potential and minimize the time spent
studying. It has special features useful when studying Japanese, but can
be used to study anything.
Changes: Many bugs were fixed, and a few features were added.

[003] - Asymptote 1.42
by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering
About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: A routine was added for projecting a Label onto a given plane. A
new inside function checks if one path is strictly inside another.
Optional arrows were added to the slopefield routines. The movie function
now generates multipage PDF animations when format="pdf" and global=true.
A fit argument was added to support an optional filled bounding box for
each movie frame. Casts were added between the hsv structure and pens. In
inline latex mode, TeX headers are now output only when needed. An xasy
bug was fixed. The sticky bit is no longer set when creating the ~/.asy
directory.

[006] - ClusterIt 2.5 (Stable)
by Tim Rightnour (http://freshmeat.net/users/garbled/)
Wed, Feb 27th 2008 13:14
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Systems Administration
About: ClusterIt is a suite of software to allow easy maintenance of
large groups of machines. It does not provide a parallel programing
environment, but is meant to be utilized in managing one, or simply to
manage massive server farms. It includes such features as parallel rsh,
parallel copy, parallel virtual xterminals (xterms), and job scheduling
facilities for performing parallel compiling. It also has programs to
allow barrier syncing in shell scripts.
Changes: A new program, dtop, allows the user to run top across multiple
machines and collate the results in real-time. The default remote commands
have been changed over to ssh from rsh. A test option has been added to all
commands to check if SSH is up and running before attempting an SSH
connection that might otherwise hang. A flag has been added to dsh
allowing the user to copy, execute, and delete a script on all machines in
one step. There are many other small bugfixes and enhancements.

[007] - Cook 2.31
by Peter Miller (http://freshmeat.net/users/pmiller/)
Wed, Feb 27th 2008 05:17
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: Cook is a tool for constructing files. It is given a set of files
to create, and recipes of how to create them. In any non-trivial program
there will be prerequisites to performing the actions necessary to
creating any file, such as include files. Cook provides a mechanism to
define these. When a program is being developed or maintained, the
programmer will typically change one file of several which comprise the
program. Cook examines the last-modified times of the files to see when
the prerequisites of a file have changed, implying that the file needs to
be recreated as it is logically out of date.
Changes: A minor build problem has been fixed.

[009] - DBIx::Perlish 0.38
by Grrrr (http://freshmeat.net/users/Grrrr/)
Wed, Feb 27th 2008 04:59
About: The DBIx::Perlish module provides the ability to work with
databases supported by the DBI module using Perl's own syntax for the four
most common operations: SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, and INSERT. By using
DBIx::Perlish, you can write most of your database queries using a
domain-specific language with Perl syntax. However, the module is not
intended to replace all use of SQL in your program. The DBIx::Perlish
module quite intentionally neither implements nor cares about database
administration tasks like schema design and management.
Changes: Metacharacter escaping in regexes was fixed.

[018] - HamExam 0.3c
by nafus (http://freshmeat.net/users/nafus/)
Wed, Feb 27th 2008 21:44
Communications :: Ham Radio
About: HamExam is a short Perl script that generates self scoring DHTML
practice tests as a study aid to prepare for the US Amateur radio
licensing exam. These practice tests are generated from a random subset of
questions from a master question pool. Your score is calculated and your
grade reported using client side JavaScript. Wrong questions are
highlighted. It strives to be simple to use and very easy to install.It
should run well under Apache's mod_perl and can be used on the command
line as well. The input files use a simple XML format, so any exam that
follows the same multiple choice format subdividing question into into
categories ("subelements" in amateur radio parlance) should be trivially
adaptable.

Wed, Feb 27th 2008 19:56
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
About: JayOS is a live CD distro intended for use as a more secure mobile
environment. It integrates in-RAM filesystem encryption with plausible
deniability for a system that can be difficult to alter without
rebuilding. This offers a user with a high degree of data integrity; since
all filesystems are either static or encrypted, the system is resistant to
physical attacks. Features 2.6 kernel, unionfs, many network security and
filesystem tools, UML, and QEMU. It runs well on low-end x86 hardware, and
requires only 128MB RAM and a bootable CD drive to get started. There is
some PowerPC support. Also included is standard desktop software. It is
based on Linux From Scratch.
Changes: This release supports the Sony VAIO VGN-UX280P. The source has
been updated to the latest Linux From Scratch and BLFS releases. The Linux
kernel is at 2.6.22.5. X11 was upgraded to Xorg 7.2. Extraneous programs
have been removed, and many others upgraded. The build process has been
completely overhauled. Later releases will include a generic kernel for
non-VAIO x86 hardware. Intel-based Macs are now supported (tested on Mac
Mini), though X11 video needs additional configuration.

[024] - LavaPE 0.9.0
by Klaus D. Guenther (http://freshmeat.net/users/guenthk/)
Wed, Feb 27th 2008 10:19
Software Development :: Interpreters
Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)
About: LavaPE is a programming environment for the experimental
object-oriented programming language Lava. It replaces text editing with
structure editing, thereby preventing all syntactic and many semantic
errors. The pure point-and-click nature of Lava programming and the
concise representation of programs as declaration trees with small chunks
of executable code simplify programming, and ease comprehension.
Changes: This release turns Lava into a language that completely prevents
inadvertent access to uninitialized variables and null objects at
programming time by complete static initialization checks. The new
optional initialize clause of the declare construct will facilitate the
creation/initialization of collections of Lava objects with
mutual/circular/forward references. The semi-automatic Lava GUI generator
allows you to assign event handlers to certain basic GUI events.

[025] - libmemcached 0.17
by Brian Aker (http://freshmeat.net/users/briantangentorg/)
Wed, Feb 27th 2008 10:21
Software Development :: Libraries
About: libmemcached is a C client library for interfacing to a memcached
server. It has been designed to be light on memory usage, thread safe and
to provide full access to server side methods. It also implements several
command line tools: memcat, memflush, memrm, memstat, and memslap (for
load generation). The library has been designed to allow for different
hashing methods on keys, partitioning by keys, and to use consistent
hashing for distribution.
Changes: MEMCACHED_BEHAVIOR_CONNECT_TIMEOUT has been added for connect
timeout in non-block mode. There is an incompatible change in
memcached_behavior_set() api. It now uses a uint64_t instead of a pointer.
There is a fix for storage of values for zero. A memcached_server_cursor()
function has been added to the API for cycling through servers.

Wed, Feb 27th 2008 04:40
Office/Business :: Financial
Office/Business :: Financial :: Accounting
About: Personal Finance Manager is a finance and expense tracking tool for
those with limited or no accounting experience. You can use it to manage
expenses and track account balances, generate reports, create and save
complex filters to search the transaction history, create charts and
graphs for assets, liabilities, and daily net worth tracking, view stock
prices/quotes, store contacts, email, and phone numbers, and import OFX
data for banks and credit cards. It supports the latest Quicken format,
and also supports downloading current statement for bank and credit card
accounts.
Changes: The online statement download was modified to use
HttpsURLConnection instead of Apache HttpClient. It should work with a
proxy transparently now. A bug was fixed in online statement download for
credit cards where the statement for an incorrect date was being attempted
to download, resulting in FI denial. A bug was fixed in the expense report

[029] - MyVoIPSpeed Server 7.4a
by Visualware Inc. (http://freshmeat.net/users/trish/)
Wed, Feb 27th 2008 10:28
Communications :: Internet Phone
Communications :: Telephony
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: MyVoIPSpeed Server very accurately measures the quality and
performance of Internet connections for Voice over IP (VoIP) usage by
simulating UDP VoIP sessions between a server and browser clients.
Connections are tested for jitter, packet loss and bandwidth consistency.
Download and upload bandwidth speeds are also measured. Reported metrics
include max pause, round trip time, and QOS (bandwidth consistency). The
Professional version includes a performance database that records all
bandwidth test results, session ID tracking, socket-to-socket speed
testing, and HTTP speed testing. The NOC Edition can perform automated
testing from one or more remote locations, providing information for
network operation centers to analyze VoIP quality, network quality and
overall performance. As a Java applet, MyVoIPSpeed Server is easily
incorporated into Web pages.
Changes: Several key bandwidth performance measures have been added,
including Max Attainable Speed (the calculated maximum TCP connect speed
that is supported by a network connection), Max Route Speed (the maximum
speed that may be attained on the route being tested), and TCP forced idle
percent (the TCP idle time invoked because the route being tested is too
slow end-to-end and the TCP stack is forced to idle).

Information Management :: Document Repositories
About: The goal of tidydoc is to make documentation organization easier.
You can add documents to a pool of documents, give them the right names
and put them into the right directories, and generate a set of HTML pages
to browse your documents. A bibtex file can also be generated. It is
written in Python in the spirit of flexibility and easy tweaking, but with
default behaviors that fit the needs of most people. You can add documents
using most transmission protocols, such as a simple cp or through SSH with
SCP. Tidydoc then generates HTML or bibtex files indexing your documents. A
simple XML file is required for each document, including some information.
These description files may be generated by using tidydoc's upload

System :: Networking
System :: Operating System
About: WANPIPE S-series is a family of intelligent multi-protocol WAN and
ADSL adapters that support data transfer rates up to 8Mbps. All WAN
protocols supported by WANPIPE are implemented in firmware and run on the
card. An advantage of an intelligent adapter is that it offloads the
system CPU and improves stability. By adding a Sangoma WAN/ADSL component
to the Linux kernel, one can create a powerful multi-T1/ADSL
router/firewall with proven reliability of Linux. Sangoma S-series cards
support an optional on board T1/E1 CSU/DSU that eliminates all external
components of a traditional routing solution: i.e. T1/E1 line can be
directly connected to the card. WANPIPE supports the following protocols,
ATM, ADSL, Frame Relay, PPP, MULTILINK PPP, CHDLC, X25(API), BitStreaming
