Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is
small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence,
different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Weighted Random,
Least Session, Least Bandwidth, Hash, Agent, and Randomized Agent) and a
customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It supports VRRP to
set up high availability configurations on multiple nodes. It supports
SNMP, integrating the BALANCENG-MIB with Net-SNMPD. It integrates pcap
packet dumping for debugging purposes and allows the implementation of a
"transparent forensic logging bridge".

Changes: Processing of private, node specific configuration files has been
added, allowing easy implementation of configuration synchronization
between nodes. The commands "save private", "save all", and "save conf"
have been added to support this concept. The manual for Release 2.x has
been split off, resulting in BalanceNG User and Reference Manual 2.038.0.

[022] - OpenVZ kernel 2.6.24-ovz002.2 (2.6.24)
  by Kir Kolyshkin (http://freshmeat.net/users/k001/)
  Sat, Mar 1st 2008 18:15

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: OpenVZ is a modified Linux kernel with additional support for
OpenVZ Virtual Environments (VE, also known as VPS). VEs are isolated,
secure environments on a single physical server, enabling better server
utilization and ensuring that applications do not conflict. Each VE
performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server; VEs can be
rebooted independently and have root access, users, IP addresses, memory,
processes, files, applications, system libraries, and configuration files.
Due to a single kernel model, OpenVZ has native performance and very high
density. It is the core of Virtuozzo.

Changes: This is the first release of an 2.6.24-based OpenVZ kernel. It is
based on the mainline 2.6.24.3 kernel. Checkpointing is back and working.
The fair scheduler was dropped, and the mainline scheduler is used.

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
System :: Networking

About: PDNS-Admin, or PowerDNS Administrator, is a Web-based script which
aids in administering domains and records for the PowerDNS SQL name server
software. PDNS-Admin is targeted mainly toward individual domain owners,
but should be robust enough to be used in a larger capacity by an ISP or
other big host. For those who may not know, PowerDNS is a domain name
server application, much like BIND, but offering alternative backends for
the storage of domain information.

Changes: Some more useless code was trimmed out. Several configurable
domain authority settings were added. Pagination support was added to the
domain listings and records displays. Support was added for LOC, SRV,
NAPTR, and SPF records. Support for configuring supermasters was added.

[032] - SndBite 3.2
  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Sat, Mar 1st 2008 03:00

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Speech

About: SndBite is a specialized audio editor designed for breaking large
recordings into smaller components with great efficiency. Its principal
intended application is in linguistic research where it is often desirable
to put each word or sentence into a separate file before further
processing. It is also useful for measuring pause durations. Its features
include multiple simultaneous views of the waveform at different
resolutions, the ability to position window edges at transitions between
sound and silence, automated setting of cut points at zero-crossings,
automatic filename generation easily controlled by the user, and optional
automatic playback on window motion. It is scriptable and may be run in
batch mode without the GUI.

Changes: This release fixes a bug where right-clicking in the neighborhood
window past the end of the waveform caused a crash and adds the option of
displaying the amplitude along with the location of the pointer, which is
useful when adjusting the silence/audio threshold. There are several other
minor improvements.

[034] - Syslinux 3.62 (Release)
  by H. Peter Anvin (http://freshmeat.net/users/hpa/)
  Sat, Mar 1st 2008 18:20

System :: Boot

About: SYSLINUX is a collection of boot loaders for the Linux operating
system which operates on Linux EXT2/EXT3 filesystems, MS-DOS FAT
filesystems, network servers using PXE firmware, or from CD-ROMs. SYSLINUX
has an advanced extension API and contains two optional menu systems. It
also includes MEMDISK, a tool for booting legacy operating systems from
non-traditional media like PXE or CD-ROM.

Changes: The primary new feature of this release is support for
hierarchical submenus in the simple menu system. In addition to that, this
release eliminates a lot of hardcoded limitations, such as the maximum
number of labels, which are now only limited by memory, and the length of
the command line. Furthermore, this release fixes the graphical display on
systems which do not support the linear framebuffer option in the VESA
BIOS.

[035] - The Frink Language 2008-03-01
  by Alan Eliasen (http://freshmeat.net/users/eliasen/)
  Sat, Mar 1st 2008 15:53

Education
Internet
Scientific/Engineering

About: Frink is a calculating tool and programming language designed to
help you in the real world. It tracks units of measurement throughout all
calculations and ensures that answers are correct. It converts between
systems of measurement and has a huge library of physical data. It handles
conversions between time zones, currencies, and historical values of the
U.S. dollar and the British pound, translates between several languages,
does date/time math, and more.

Changes: This release allows Frink to represent fractional exponents of
base dimensions. This is necessary to properly support some systems of
units, such as Gaussian or Heaviside-Lorentz units, and to make various
calculations in quantum mechanics possible, among other things.

[036] - The Launcher 2.4
  by Alte (http://freshmeat.net/users/alte/)
  Sat, Mar 1st 2008 23:59

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Desktop Environment :: Tools

About: The Launcher is an innovative GNOME panel applet or stand-alone
application launcher automatically adapting to your habits. The ultimate
goal is to make it possible to run any application with as few clicks as
possible. This means tracking your favorite applications, and not forcing
you to mark or organize them by hand. Preferences change with time, and
The Launcher responds to that automatically. It delivers a simple, clean,
and usable interface with advanced features like 'search as you type' and
'smart search', and requires zero configuration effort. It should be
especially handy on touch screens and in keyboard-only scenarios.

Changes: The interface was simplified to a single view without tabs that
retains all the functionality of version 2.3. A tray icon launcher was
added. Startup time was significantly decreased. The "--debug" option was
added to run the applet in a separate window.

[037] - ucommon 1.5.0
  by David Sugar (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidsugar/)
  Sat, Mar 1st 2008 16:39

Software Development :: Libraries

About: UCommon is a lightweight C++ library to facilitate using C++ design
patterns even for very deeply embedded applications, such as for systems
using uClibc along with POSIX threading support. For this reason, UCommon
disables language features that consume memory or introduce runtime
overhead. UCommon introduces some design patterns from Objective-C, such
as reference counted objects, memory pools, and smart pointers. UCommon
introduces some new concepts for handling of thread locking and
synchronization.

Changes: GNU Common C++ classes were migrated to the UCommon codebase,
including TCP streaming, persistence, and an XML stream parser. This is
preliminary development for a merged GNU Common C++ 2/UCommon 2.0 project
release.

[038] - WLA DX 9.4
  by Ville Helin (http://freshmeat.net/users/vhelin/)
  Sat, Mar 1st 2008 23:12

Software Development :: Assemblers
Software Development :: Compilers

About: WLA DX is yet another macro assembler that can program the GB-Z80,
Z80, 6502, 65c02, 6510, 65816, HuC6280, and SPC-700 CPUs. Included in the
package there is a GB-Z80 disassembler and few converters. WLA DX was
initially programmed to compile ROM images for Gameboy, but nowadays it
can also patch existing ROM images with code, and even compile program
files and ROM files for other CPUs like the NES-6502, C64-6510, and SNES's
SPC-700.

Changes: This version fixes some small bugs, adds filter macros to .db,
dw, and .incbin, and incorporates a Mersenne Twister. This release also
changes the way label addresses are calculated inside branch opcodes'
pending calculations.

[039] - XScreenSaver 5.05
  by jwz (http://freshmeat.net/users/jwz/)
  Sat, Mar 1st 2008 23:57

Desktop Environment :: Screen Savers
Multimedia :: Graphics

About: XScreenSaver is the standard screen saver collection shipped on
most Linux and Unix systems running the X11 Window System. These screen
savers also work on Mac OS (X11 is not required). More than 200 screen
savers are included.

Changes: New hacks include "cubicgrid", "hypnowheel", and "lcdscrub".
Updates were made to "m6502", "gears", "cubestorm", and "noof". An attempt
was made to work around the latest Xinerama bugs. A Mac OS 10.5 perl bug
that caused the text-displaying hacks to fail on some systems was worked
around. Font-related System Preferences crashes in Mac OS savers were
hopefully fixed. The recent PAM changes broke the "Caps Lock" warning in
the password dialog, the failed login warnings, and syslogging, so all of
that was fixed.
