Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Hardware

About: amforth is a Forth distribution for the the AVR Atmega
microcontroller. Once put into flash, it needs only a serial connection to
the host computer to work interactivly. New words are compiled directly
into flash, thus extending the dictionary immediately. It provides most of
the ANS94 Forth Standard plus extensions. It is written in AVR standard
assembly language and Forth itself. The main development uses Atmega8 and
Atmega32 controllers; other Atmega controllers work with small
adjustments.

Changes: This release fixes a few bugs and optimizes the core system
slightly. The most notable change in the library part is the assembler.

Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy

About: Freeciv is a multiuser reimplementation for Unix/X of the famous
Microprose game of Civilization. By default, the game is an improved Civ
II, but this can be customized; modpacks for near-100% compatibility with
Civ I and Civ II are included. Multiuser gameplay is real-time: in each
turn, all human players move concurrently. The game is designed to remain
fairly playable even on poor network connections. Freeciv can also be
played on standalone machines, and its AI players are a good challenge for
beginners. The source code comes with the server, two X clients, and non-X
clients for MS Windows and Amiga. Freeciv is released under the GNU
General Public License. It is maintained by an international team of
coders and enthusiasts, and is easily one of the most fun and addictive
network games out there.

Changes: A server crash was fixed. Buttons were added for saving server
settings in the GTK+ 2 client. Many updates were made to translations.

[012] - gpgdir 1.8
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Sat, Apr 5th 2008 12:26

Security :: Cryptography

About: gpgdir is a Perl script that uses the CPAN GnuPG module to encrypt
and decrypt directories using a GPG key specified in ~/.gpgdirrc. It
supports recursively descending through a directory in order to make sure
it encrypts or decrypts every file in a directory and all of its
subdirectories. All file mtime and atime values are preserved across
encryption and decryption operations. In addition, gpgdir is careful not
to encrypt hidden files and directories.

Changes: The test suite was updated to validate the gpgdir
--Obfuscate-filenames mode to ensure that files are encrypted as
"gpgdir_PID_NUM.gpg". A minor bug was fixed to remove the .gpgdir_map_file
in --Obfuscate-filenames mode after a successful decryption cycle. The CPAN
GnuPG::Interface module was updated to version 0.36.

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: This version eliminates erroneous timeouts during print jobs and
implements better warnings if resources could not be rendered. In exam
mode, the generation of randomized numerical bubbles was fixed for the
situation where the correct answer is zero. The Spanish, German, and
Portuguese localization files were updated. Printing now correctly
supports UTF-8.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
System :: Networking

About: PDNS-Admin, or PowerDNS Administrator, is a Web-based script which
aids in administering domains and records for the PowerDNS SQL name server
software. PDNS-Admin is targeted mainly toward individual domain owners,
but should be robust enough to be used in a larger capacity by an ISP or
other big host. For those who may not know, PowerDNS is a domain name
server application, much like BIND, but offering alternative backends for
the storage of domain information.

Changes: A missing language definition was fixed. A SOA serial update is
needed to trim whitespace characters, the record entry would keep growing.
An issue where it was not possible to delete a supermaster was fixed.
Missing log messages were added to the logging functions. Unnecessary skin
upgrade code was removed. Better handling was provided for user created
domains. Default SOA expiry time was raised to three weeks based on
diagnostic recommendations. The ability to set the Master IP for a Slave
domain was added along with a "Your Console" link on the universal

[028] - TaskForest 1.06

System :: Monitoring

About: TaskForest is a simple but expressive job scheduler that allows you
to chain jobs and tasks and to create time dependencies. It uses plain-text
configuration files to specify task dependencies. It is designed for use on
a single machine.

Changes: A bunch of minor bugs were fixed. --help functionality was
implemented. $VERSIONS and pod were added to every .pm file. An extra call
to localtime was removed. The default_timezone command line option was
removed. A redundant regex match for parens in job names was deleted. The
unused $forest variable was removed from Family::readFromFile.
$this_jobs_dependencies was renamed to $this_jobs_time_dependencies.
Refactoring was undertaken and more pods and test cases were added. The
Family->display() output was made prettier. StringHandle and
StringHandleTier classes were made to make testing easier.

[029] - Widelands build-12

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Real Time Strategy
Games/Entertainment :: Simulation

About: Widelands is an economic and military simulation game. The map is
shown in parallel perspective with 3-dimensional terrain. Buildings and
units are animated. The player controls a tribe. Land is claimed and held
by military presence and then used to build an economy to support military
expansion and confrontation. The project is a work in progress where much
remains to be done; computer players and multiplayer are in very early
stages of development. Some features that have already been implemented
are exploration, fog of war, sound effects, background music, adjustable
simulation speed, a few tutorial campaigns, translations to several
languages, and a map editor.

Changes: This release added animal and worker animations, a new tribe
(Atlantids), a map, and scenario event types (building, flag, immovable,
reveal_campaign, reveal_scenario, road) and trigger types (military
influence, ownership, vision). Scenarios were fixed and updated to take
advantage of the new features. It is possible to run network games from
maps (but not yet from saved games). Automatic flag placement on roads was
implemented. A map can be loaded into the editor from the command line. UI
elements were fixed and improved. Bugs where a worker was lost when
buildings were destroyed and the objective display was not updated were
fixed.

[030] - xpra 0.0.4
  by Nathaniel Smith (http://freshmeat.net/users/njsmith/)

Desktop Environment :: Tools
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers
Utilities

About: X Persistent Remote Applications (xpra) is "screen for X". It lets
you run applications remotely (like ordinary X or VNC), but unlike
ordinary X, these applications are "persistent" if you lose your
connection, or even if you want to switch to another computer. Also unlike
VNC, they are ordinary applications on your desktop managed by your window
manager, not trapped in a box.

Changes: The most notable new feature in this release is the ability to
restart or upgrade a running xpra server, without disturbing the programs
running inside it. In addition, many important bugs were fixed, including
one where windows would occasionally stop updating, one where stray
busy-looping processes would be left behind on servers, one where an X
server bug caused massive slowdowns (now worked around), and so on.
Additionally, the backspace key should now always work, and window
class/instance information is exported.
