Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Text Processing
About: Cypher is an AI program that generates the .rdf (RDF graph) and
serql (SeRQL query) representations of plain language input, allowing
users to speak plain language to update and query databases. With robust
definition languages, Cypher's grammar and lexicon can quickly and easily
be extended to process highly complex sentences and phrases of any natural
language, and can cover any vocabulary. Equipped with Cypher, programmers
can begin building next generation semantic Web applications that harness
natural language.
Changes: This release adds a load element which is used to specify which
Pattern files to load and in what order (all files containing con elements
should be loaded before the files in which they are referenced), an
index.xml file which is placed in the grammar directory and is processed
first (it contains the schema and list of load directives), and an
xml:base property for the cypher element (function and Pattern type URIs
are derived from concatenating the namespace given by xml:base with the
function or Pattern type).

Documentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: Daikon is an implementation of dynamic detection of likely
invariants. An invariant is a property (such as "x=2*y+5" or
"this.next.prev = this" or "myarray is sorted by <") that holds at a
certain point or points in a program. Invariants are often seen in assert
statements, documentation, and formal specifications. Invariants can be
useful in program understanding and a host of other applications. Daikon
runs a program, observes the values that the program computes, and then
reports properties that were true over the observed executions. It can
detect properties in Java, C, C++, Perl, and IOA programs, in spreadsheet
files, and in other data sources.
Changes: This release was enhanced to better support program points that
are basic blocks. Some minor enhancements and bugfixes were made, and the
documentation was improved.

Fri, Apr 4th 2008 09:18
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries
About: GiNaC (GiNaC is Not a CAS (Computer Algebra System)) is a C++
library for symbolic calculations. It is designed to allow the creation of
integrated systems that embed symbolic manipulations together with more
established areas of computer science (like computation-intense numeric
applications, graphical interfaces, etc.). Contrary to other CASes it does
not try to provide extensive algebraic capabilities and a simple
programming language but instead accepts a given language (C++) and
extends it by a set of algebraic capabilities.
Changes: This release fixes a bug in numerical evaluation of multiple
polylogarithms and alternating multiple zeta values introduced in version

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
About: Jhead is a command line driven utility for extracting digital
camera settings from the Exif format files used by many digital cameras.
It handles the various confusing ways these can be expressed, and displays
them as F-stop, shutter speed, etc. It is also able to reduce the size of
digital camera JPEGs without loss of information, by deleting integral
thumbnails that digital cameras put into the Exif header. If you need to
add Exif support to a program, this is a simple program to cut and paste
from. Many projects, including PHP, have reused code from this utility.
Changes: The program was made aware of XMP data to not delete such
sections. IPTC handling was slightly improved. The date encoding in EXIF
header creation was changed to make it more compatible.

by Ryan Daum (http://freshmeat.net/users/rdaum/)
Fri, Apr 4th 2008 05:56
About: jmemcached is a Java implementation of the daemon (server) side of
the memcached protocol. It implements a clone of the C version of the
memcached daemon, but in pure Java. It is protocol compatible with the C
version of memcached. Existing clients, including the one for Java, should
work without modification. Replacing the Java version with the C version
(and vice versa) is trivial. It can be embedded in an existing Java
project or used from its commandline interface (which mimics the C version
in arguments).

Fri, Apr 4th 2008 00:13
Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Libraries
About: LuaRocks is a deployment and management system for modules in the
Lua programming language. It aims to provide facilities for Lua such as
those from module systems of other scripting languages, such as Ruby's
RubyGems or Perl's CPAN. LuaRocks allows Lua modules to be installed as
self-contained packages called "rocks", which also contain version and
dependency information. This information is used at install time so that
when one rock is requested, all rocks it depends on are also installed.
It's also used at run time so that when a module is required, the correct
version is loaded.
Changes: Multiple local rocks trees are supported. Command-line flags were
added to allow specifying which server to get rocks from and which local
tree to install them to. The manifest file in rocks trees now stores
dependency information. The "unpack" command allows unpacking binary and
pure-Lua rocks for inspection.

Fri, Apr 4th 2008 12:21
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.
About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the latest USDA
Nutrient Database for Standard Reference. This database contains values
for vitamins, minerals, fats, calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber,
etc., and includes the essential polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and
Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed as a percentage of the Daily Value,
the familiar standard of food labeling in the United States, but also can
be fully customized. Foods can be added from recipes or food labels, and
nutrient intake can be graphed. The program is completely menu-driven and
there are no commands to learn.
Changes: The "Record Meals" and "Analyze Meals" analyses now each
separately remember how many meals were last analyzed, so that a user
could, for example, always look at a single meal on the "Record Meals"
analysis, and always look at a couple of weeks of meals on "Analyze
Meals", but not have to specify how many meals each time.
