System :: Archiving

About: atool is a script for managing file archives of various types (tar,
tar+gzip, zip etc). The main command is aunpack, which extracts files from
an archive. It overcomes the problem of extracting files from an archive
without checking whether the files were located in a subdirectory or in
the top directory of the archive, resulting in files scattered all over
the place by first extracting to a new directory. If there was only a
single file in the archive, that file is moved to the original directory.
It also prevents local files from being overwritten by mistake. The other
commands are apack for creating archives, als for listing files in
archives, and acat for extracting files to standard out.

  by Travis Vachon (http://freshmeat.net/users/tvachon/)
  Thu, Apr 3rd 2008 22:38

Communications
Internet

About: Cosmo is the OSAF calendar sharing server. With your favorite
calendar program (Chandler, Apple iCal, Mozilla Sunbird, or any other
WebDAV or CalDAV enabled client), you can share your calendar with other
people by publishing it to Cosmo. Your shared calendars can be subscribed
to and updated by anyone, even if they don't have an account on your
server. Cosmo provides Atom feeds for shared calendars, so you can track
updates in your favorite feed reader and integrate your calendar into your
Web site or blog.

Changes: This release primarily consists of an update to Dojo, the
JavaScript toolkit used to build the Chandler Server Web UI. Dojo's 0.9
release was essentially a complete rewrite, and involved a large number of
core API changes. Changes to the codebase have been similarly numerous.
Dojo 1.0.2 is currently used.

ClassCastException; this has been fixed. There are some cosmetic changes
in the Viewer UI. Some old documents encoded as ASCII had errors with EOD
detection; this has been fixed. A multithreading issue with the licenser
has been fixed: production licenses would incorrectly show a DEMO banner.

[011] - dim versioning tool 0.4.6
  by Marc Vertes (http://freshmeat.net/users/mvertes/)
  Thu, Apr 3rd 2008 22:40

Software Development :: Version Control
Utilities

About: Dim is a utility to help you track the changes of items (sets
composed of multiple files). It provides commands to handle the complete
lifecycle of version control operations: create a library, register users
(code authors), create items, save local versions, branch, clone, export,
import, remove, merge, archive, replicate library content over the network
or the filesystem, and access the full history and browse differences at
the library, item, file, line, or word level. Dim is a single
self-documented POSIX shell script. It just uses standard Unix utilities
like awk, diff, tar, and openssl.

Changes: The automatic merge infrastructure is now in production, with
"merge", "merged", and "unmerge" as new commands. Advanced algorithms in
ancestor graph management ensure that no merge operation has to be
performed more than once when merging frequently. The dag command has been
extended to display merges graphically. A sample custom extension module is
provided. Many bugfixes have been committed.

environment. It summons a drag handle when you are managing files or
information in a shell. It accepts both drags and drops, and can be made
to output dragged-to items to the standard output. You can also pipe text
to Dragbox, or a list of files using xargs.

Changes: This release can handle multiple "shelves" (multiple instances of
dragbox). Objects can be retrieved from any shelf from the command line.
More output options have been added, and objects can be output at exit or
as they are received.

[017] - genders 1.9-1
  by Albert Chu (http://freshmeat.net/users/chu11/)
  Thu, Apr 3rd 2008 12:11

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Systems Administration

About: Genders is a static cluster configuration database used for cluster
configuration management. It is used by a variety of tools and scripts for
management of large clusters. The genders database is accessed by every
node in a cluster, either through a networked file system or by
replicating the database on every node of the cluster. The database
describes the layout and configuration of the cluster so that tools and
scripts can sense the variations of cluster nodes. By abstracting this
information into a plain text file, it becomes possible to change the
configuration of a cluster by modifying only one file.

Changes: This release supports the -V and -U options in nodeattr. There
are minor bugfixes.

  Thu, Apr 3rd 2008 06:36

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries

About: GiNaC (GiNaC is Not a CAS (Computer Algebra System)) is a C++
library for symbolic calculations. It is designed to allow the creation of
integrated systems that embed symbolic manipulations together with more
established areas of computer science (like computation-intense numeric
applications, graphical interfaces, etc.). Contrary to other CASes it does
not try to provide extensive algebraic capabilities and a simple
programming language but instead accepts a given language (C++) and
extends it by a set of algebraic capabilities.

Changes: This release fixes VPATH building of documentation, a bug in
numerical evaluation of multiple polylogarithms for arguments equal to
certain roots of unity, and the check for memory leakage in the parser.
The internal function coerce() is standards-compliant. lsolve() has been
improved on systems containing non-numeric coefficients. The automatic
test programs have been improved, and now work on MinGW and Cygwin as
well.

About: TreeMapping is an ingenious means of visualizing hierarchic values.
Often used to answer the question "Where has all my disk space gone?" it
lends itself naturally to many data models, even if the hierarchy is
artificial. It does all this in plain old JavaScript and HTML DIV
elements. The treemap control can be fully interactive and allows the user

  Thu, Apr 3rd 2008 12:12

Database :: Front-Ends
Desktop Environment :: Tools

About: JSqsh is a Java reimplementation of a console based (i.e.
non-graphical) database query tool called sqsh. Jsqsh combines the ability
to run SQL queries against any database with a JDBC driver along with much
of the functionality of a Unix shell, such as piping the results of
queries out to external programs (grep, more, etc.), expanding variables,
redirecting output to files, command line editing, tab-completion of
object names, and more.

Changes: This release adds the ability to manage
(add/remove/delete/edit/list) connection information to make managing of
complex database environments easier, the ability to redirect the output
of one session to another session, and a facility to execute prepared SQL
or stored procedures using data contained in CSV files (similar to
mail-merge in a word processor). Finally, it includes a number of critical
bugfixes over version 1.1.

  Thu, Apr 3rd 2008 03:42

Education
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Chemistry

About: The massXpert software package is a mass spectrometry environment
for linear (bio-)polymers. It inherits all the innovations of GNU
polyxmass. It allows the detailed definition of new polymer chemistries in
the XpertDef module. These chemistry definitions are then used in the
desktop calculator-like mass calculator (XpertCalc) and in the
sophisticated polymer sequence editor and (bio-)chemical/mass
spectrometric simulations module (XpertEdit). Available simulations
include polymer and monomer chemical modifications, polymer sequence
cleavage, gas-phase fragmentation, m/z ratio calculations, and more.

Changes: This release implemented a new fragmentation specification method
for fragmentation patterns where the monomer undergoing fragmentation has
its lateral chain decomposed. This is particularly useful in nucleic acids
chemistry where the nucleic base might be eliminated at the monomer
undergoing fragmentation according to the pattern 'a'. The French
translation was updated. A memory leak and bugs were fixed. The user
manual was updated.

  Thu, Apr 3rd 2008 23:06

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: The Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a collection of three
system daemons that are designed to work with the Linux iptables
firewalling code to detect port scans and other suspect traffic. It
features a set of highly configurable danger thresholds (with sensible
defaults), verbose alert messages, email alerting, DShield reporting, and
automatic blocking of offending IP addresses. Psad incorporates many of
the packet signatures included in Snort to detect various kinds of
suspicious scans, and implements the same passive OS fingerprinting
algorithm used by p0f.

Changes: A bug was fixed so that kernel timestamps are not included in
iptables log prefixes that contain spaces like "[ 65.026008] DROP".
Non-resolved IP addresses are now skipped. p0f output in --debug mode was
improved to display when a passive OS fingerprint cannot be calculated
based on iptables log messages that include TCP options (i.e. with
--log-tcp-options when building a LOG rule on the iptables command line).

  Thu, Apr 3rd 2008 06:32

Security
System :: Monitoring

About: Prelude-Manager is a high-availability server that collects and
normalizes information from distributed Prelude-IDS sensors and stores
them in a database (or any kind of user-provided media). It is part of
Prelude, a hybrid Intrusion Detection framework implementing an open
communication layer for use by any security application. Prelude-Manager
also provide the ability to relay received events to one or several other
prelude-manager servers and allows users to filter received events so they
can provide specific actions for specific events. Support for filtering
plugins allows users to hook into different places in the Manager to
define custom criteria for alert relaying and logging.

Changes: This release uses libev in place of the server-logic
architecture. Libev introduction also fixes a rare issue where
server-logic would not notice a dead connection. There is a new
connection-timeout option governing the maximum number of seconds a client
might take to authenticate (the default is 10 seconds). There is massive
cleanup of the build process, and RELRO is enabled when possible. A number
of potential race conditions in the reverse relaying code have been fixed.
Reverse relaying performance has been improved.

[055] - strongSwan 4.2.0
  by Andreas Steffen (http://freshmeat.net/users/asteffen/)

Security
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking

About: strongSwan is a complete IPsec and IKEv1 implementation for Linux
2.4 and 2.6 kernels. It also fully supports the new IKEv2 protocol with
Linux 2.6 kernels. It interoperates in both IKEv1 and IKEv2 mode with most
other IPsec-based VPN products. The focus of the strongSwan project is on
strong authentication mechanisms using X.509 public key certificates and
optional secure storage of private keys on smartcards through a
standardized PKCS#11 interface. A unique feature is the use of X.509
attribute certificates to implement advanced access control schemes based
on group memberships.

Changes: The IKEv2 keying daemon has become modular and thus more
extensible. Plugins for MySQL and SQLite allow you to store configurations
and user credentials in a relational database. All cryptographic algorithms
have been implemented as plugins, so that any software or
hardware-accelerated crypto module can be attached during runtime.

Software Development :: Version Control :: Subversion

About: svnpserver is a CVS pserver implementation that works against an
SVN (Subversion) repository. It can be useful for old build scripts or
legacy application when migrating from CVS to SVN.

Changes: The "cvs tag" command was implemented. A bug in static directory
handling was fixed: A static directory in CVS doesn't change the set of
files. Merging of changed files when doing a cvs update was implemented.

[057] - system-config-printer 0.7.82.2 (Stable)
  by Tim Waugh (http://freshmeat.net/users/tmw/)
  Thu, Apr 3rd 2008 06:33

Printing

About: system-config-printer configures a CUPS server. It uses the CUPS
API (bound to Python with pycups) to do this. The communication with the
server is performed using IPP. As a result, it is equally able to
configure a remote CUPS server as a local one.

Changes: The correct default printer is now shown. Jobs not owned by the
current user are ignored. Various other bugs have been fixed.

[058] - Unicode  Utilities 2.26
  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Thu, Apr 3rd 2008 23:09

Text Processing :: Linguistic
Utilities

About: The Unicode Utilities are a set of programs for manipulating and
analyzing Unicode text. uniname defaults to printing the character offset
of each character, its byte offset, its hex code value, its encoding, the
glyph itself, and its name. Command line options allow undesired
information to be suppressed and the Unicode range to be added. unidesc
reports the character ranges to which different portions of the text
belong. unihist generates a histogram of the characters in its input.
ExplicateUTF8 is intended for debugging or for learning about Unicode. It
determines and explains the validity of a sequence of bytes as a UTF-8
encoding. unirev reverses UTF-8 strings.

Changes: This release adds a new utility, unifuzz, which generates test
input for programs expecting Unicode. In addition to generating random
sequences of characters, unifuzz can generate a character from each range,
tokens of various potentially problematic characters and sequences, very
long lines, strings with embedded nulls, and ill-formed UTF-8.

[059] - VietPad 2.0 (.NET implementation)
  by Quan Nguyen (http://freshmeat.net/users/nguyenq/)
  Thu, Apr 3rd 2008 23:02

Text Editors

About: VietPad is a Java/.NET cross-platform Vietnamese Unicode text
editor that allows you to open, edit, convert, print, and save Vietnamese
text files in Unicode formats.

Changes: The code was upgraded to use .NET 2.0. The program was redesigned
using .NET 2.0's new controls. The NetSpell spell checker was added with
Vietnamese phonetic code rules. The sorting algorithm was improved. The
result is still slightly off due to errors with Vietnamese collation in
Windows.

a new process. If that process does not exit withing a certain time, it is
killed with the TERM signal. The precompiled RPM runs on all i386-based
systems. It contains a version of waitmax that is statically linked with
diet and does not need libc or any other library.

Changes: fprintf was removed and the code size was shrunk from 16K to 9K
in the statically linked version.
