Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: Gmsh is an automatic 3D finite element grid generator with built-in
CAD and post-processing facilities. Its design goal is to provide a simple
meshing tool for academic problems with parametric input and advanced
visualization capabilities. It is built around four modules: geometry,
mesh, solver, and post-processing. The specification of any input to these
modules is done either interactively using the graphical user interface
(based on FLTK and OpenGL) or in ASCII text files using Gmsh's own
scripting language.
Changes: This release introduces a new model-based post-processing
backend, a new background field interface, and a new experimental 2-D
frontal algorithm. It also adds support for the MED mesh and
post-processing file format, and includes many other small improvements
and bugfixes.

[020] - Pantheios 1.0.1 beta 123
by Dr Proctor (http://freshmeat.net/users/DrProctor/)
Sat, Apr 19th 2008 00:10
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Logging
About: Pantheios is a C/C++ logging API library. It offers an optimal
combination of complete type-safety, very high efficiency, genericity, and
extensibility. It is simple to use and extend, highly portable (platform
and compiler independent), and it upholds the C tradition of only paying
for what you use. Pantheios supports logging of message statements of
arbitrary complexity, consisting of heterogenous types. Pantheios supports
filtering of log messages based on severity level.
Changes: A bug with VC++ 6, Borland, and DMC++ in the recently released
pantheios::hostId was fixed. A long-standing bug in compilation of ACE
back-ends and examples for VC++ is now fixed. A significant amount of
refactoring of Core and Util library headers and implementation file and
API member names has been completed. A smaller refactoring of test
directories/names has been completed. This release bundles xTests 0.5.2
and relies on STLSoft 1.9.31. These are breaking changes, and any code
using the Pantheios C API will need to be edited and rebuilt.

Sat, Apr 19th 2008 03:41
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: SCons is a software construction tool (build tool substitute for
Make) implemented in Python. It features a modular build engine that can
be embedded in other software. SCons configuration files are Python
scripts that call the build engine API. It can scan files to detect
dependencies automatically and maintain a global view of all dependencies
in a build tree, and uses MD5 signatures to detect changed file contents
reliably. Timestamps can be used if you prefer. SCons also supports
parallel builds and is easily extensible through user-defined builder and
scanner objects.

[026] - SHOGUN 0.6.1
by Soeren Sonnenburg (http://freshmeat.net/users/sonnenburg/)
Sat, Apr 19th 2008 03:42
Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
About: SHOGUN is a machine learning toolbox whose focus is on large scale
kernel methods and especially on Support Vector Machines (SVM). It
provides a generic SVM object interfacing to several different SVM
implementations, all making use of the same underlying, efficient kernel
implementations. Apart from SVMs and regression, SHOGUN also features a
number of linear methods like Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Linear
Programming Machine (LPM), (Kernel) Perceptrons, and algorithms to train
hidden Markov models. SHOGUN can be used from within C++, Matlab, R,
Octave, and Python.
Changes: Shogun now fully support the octave-modular interface. All
python-modular examples describing the use of kernels, classifier,
distributions, features, distances, regression, and preprocessors have
been ported to octave-modular. The documentation received minor updates.
The swig director has been unconditionally disabled, which reduces wrapper
code size and compile time and also speeds up calls to virtual functions
significantly. Big speed improvements are to be expected if you were using
the python-modular interface. Command-line help was improved.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
Multimedia :: Video
About: SMPlayer intends to be a complete front-end for Mplayer, from basic
features like playing videos, DVDs, and VCDs to more advanced features like
support for Mplayer filters and more. One of the main features is the
ability to remember the state of a played file, so when you play it later
it will resume at the same point and with the same settings. SMPlayer is
developed with the Qt toolkit, so it's multi-platform. An executable for
Windows is also available.
Changes: DVDs now start to play at chapter 1 instead of chapter 2 if using
mplayer 1.0rc2 or older. A delay that could occur on startup if there were
non-local files in the recent files menu was fixed. Initial support for
edl files was added. The ability to automatically get information (length
and name) about the files added to the playlist was added. A new option
was added to the preferences to select the default deinterlacer. Support
for mouse buttons XButton1 and XButton2 was added.
