  Thu, Apr 24th 2008 22:55

Database
Documentation
Information Management

About: AgileWiki is meant to create software systems which are fluid,
easily configured and can be reorganized on-the-fly to meet ever changing
requirements. It includes a COW-based database, the Rolonics programming
paradigm, and semantic inferencing.

Changes: The order of the rbacklinks display was fixed. New commands were
added: home, rlinks, and linkCSecs. A lot of garbage in the user's journal
was replaced with USER backlinks from the transaction rolons. Browse is
much easer to use now--it defaults to main.cowdb:trunk.

[006] - DBIx::Perlish 0.39
  by Grrrr (http://freshmeat.net/users/Grrrr/)
  Thu, Apr 24th 2008 10:19

About: The DBIx::Perlish module provides the ability to work with
databases supported by the DBI module using Perl's own syntax for the four
most common operations: SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, and INSERT. By using
DBIx::Perlish, you can write most of your database queries using a
domain-specific language with Perl syntax. However, the module is not
intended to replace all use of SQL in your program. The DBIx::Perlish
module quite intentionally neither implements nor cares about database
administration tasks like schema design and management.

Changes: This release fixes handling of bound values in complex joins.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: DerMixD is an audio mixing and network-listening daemon that is
similar to mixplayd but quite different in its implementation. It supports
the playing of music files on a run-time configurable number of input
channels, mixing them together and producing output on a run-time
configurable number of output channels. It is controlled over a TCP socket
and supports scripting, gapless playing of tracks, including filtering of
null samples from padding, use of mpg123's equalizer, flexible
input/output connection, changing playback speed, and more.

Changes: A regression caused by leftover debugging code has been fixed:
where 1.6.1 introduced pauses in playback suddenly, 1.6.2 cures that.

  Thu, Apr 24th 2008 13:27

Communications
Internet

About: Freenet is a peer-to-peer network designed to allow the
distribution of information over the Internet in an efficient manner,
without fear of censorship. It is completely decentralized (there is no
person or computer essential to its operation), meaning that Freenet

Freenet also employs intelligent routing and caching to learn to route
requests more efficiently, automatically mirror popular data, make network
flooding almost impossible, and move data to where it is in greatest
demand.

Changes: A complete ground-up rewrite, implementation of a "darknet" mode
for added security, a friendly installer, and a multitude of other
improvements.

  by fooscope (http://freshmeat.net/users/fooscope/)
  Thu, Apr 24th 2008 05:38

Communications

About: gumnut is a text based client for creating, moderating, and
displaying comments over a decentralized communication network (currently
gnutella). Comments are text files with a simple naming convention that
uses the filename to describe field attributes (such as topic and
geographical location). A discussion tree is read by searching on one or
more of these fields and then downloading and reassembling the individual
comments in order.

Changes: The configuration file and share directories are automatically
created if they are not found when starting gumnut, removing the need for
running the "gumnut-setup" script. The -c option was fixed for loading an
alternate configuration file. Minor code cleanup was done.

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of
user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can
access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs
are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so
scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it seems dangerous,
the safety of the kernel can be ensured through such methods as static type
checking, software fault isolation, and so forth.

API improvement, allowing to destroy value within an IDMEF message, and
unified memory handling. Build system cleanup, enable RELRO when possible.
Implement an AUTOCONFIG flag, that applications can unset in order for
their client not to read the default profile/global configuration. Fix
possible assertion when destroying un-started prelude-client. Improvement
to the prelude-io API. Headers fixes for C++ build. Fix printing and

[032] - ns4 4.0(11)
  by Chris Mason (http://freshmeat.net/users/chrimaso/)
  Thu, Apr 24th 2008 05:27

Utilities

About: ns4 is a configuration management tool which allows the automated
backup of just about anything, but it was designed for routers and
switches. If you are able to log into it through a CLI, you can back it
up. Commands are defined within a configuration file, and when they are
executed, the output is sent to a series of FTP servers for archiving. As
well as archiving configurations, it allows scripts to be run on nodes;
this allows configurations to be applied en masse and allows conditional
logic so different bits of scripts are run on different nodes.

Changes: Support was added for entering sub-modes from within command
lists. Support was added for SMTP authentication for alerts. A bug which
caused ns4 to take a long time to time out a node which was down was
fixed.

[033] - nut 13.7
  by Jim Jozwiak (http://freshmeat.net/users/jozwiak/)
  Thu, Apr 24th 2008 22:38

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the latest USDA
Nutrient Database for Standard Reference. This database contains values
for vitamins, minerals, fats, calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber,
etc., and includes the essential polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and
Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed as a percentage of the Daily Value,
the familiar standard of food labeling in the United States, but also can
be fully customized. Foods can be added from recipes or food labels, and
nutrient intake can be graphed. The program is completely menu-driven and
there are no commands to learn.

Changes: This release fixes a bug in the food suggestion function. When an
analysis reset detects no appreciable long-chain polyunsaturated fats, such
as with a vegan diet, it sets the program to compute essential fat
reference values only from linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid; but in
this case, "food suggestions" still showed requirements for AA, EPA, and
DHA.

About: nwbintools is a machine code tool-chain containing an assembler and
various related development tools. It will thus be similar to GNU's
binutils, but no attempts are made to duplicate its functionality,
organization, or interfaces. The assembler works on x86 ELF-based Linux

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion

About: Oggify is a program that was written to help manage and convert
FLAC audio files into other formats. It ships with MP3 and Ogg Vorbis
support. It is intended to allow a user to have a directory tree of FLAC
files, and be able to update a tree of MP3 or Ogg files as they add new
FLAC files. It has an easy command-line interface with a variety of
adjustable settings. It also features a plugin architecture to make it
easy to add support for more formats.

Changes: Oggify is now written in Python. Various feature improvements
have been added. Support for file formats is implemented with plugins.

[036] - Open Auto Classifieds 1.4.3b
  by bkeep (http://freshmeat.net/users/bkeep/)
  Thu, Apr 24th 2008 21:58

About: OpenAutoClassifieds is a vehicle classifieds manager. Intended to
be both easy to install and easy to administer, it uses PHP to drive a
MySQL backend, thus creating a tool that is fast and flexible. No HTML
coding is required to add, delete, or modify listings. You can upload
photos via your Web browser. If photos are not uploaded for a vehicle, a
"photo not available" image will be automatically displayed for the
listing.

Changes: A function mismatch typographical error in the image functions
and the image.php file was fixed. A misspelling in the English language
file was fixed: "milage" should be "mileage". A typographical error in
functions.php for listing_condition in addListing function was fixed.
listings.tpl was changed so that it will not display empty fields if no
data is in the database column. The way random images are displayed on the
index page was changed so that sold autos are not shown in the random list.
A currency symbol was added in the language file.

[038] - peppy 0.7.3.2
  by Rob McMullen (http://freshmeat.net/users/robm351/)
  Thu, Apr 24th 2008 22:49

Text Editors

About: peppy ((ap)Proximated (X)Emacs Powered by Python) is a
wxPython/Scintilla-based editor written in and extensible through Python.
It attempts to provide an XEmacs-like multi-window, multi-tabbed framework
with low coupling, so it's easy to add support for new types of files.

Changes: This release adds a search and replace minibuffer in the style of
XEmacs that uses keyboard commands instead of the mouse to operate: "y" to
replace, "n" to skip, "!" to replace all, etc. Shell style wildcard and
simple regex matching are also included. Many bugfixes were made to the
autoindenting code and the processing of global keybindings. The Mac OS
X-specific problem of the double Help menu was fixed.

[039] - phpLogCon 2.1.0
  by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
  Thu, Apr 24th 2008 10:23

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: phpLogCon is a Web front-end for syslog and other network event
data. It provides easy browsing and some basic analysis. Network events
are taken from a database, where they must be stored by a feeding
application (not part of phpLogCon itself). Depending on database
contents, phpLogCon can process syslog messages, Windows event log entries
and some more exotic things. It works together with rsyslogd, an enhanced
syslog deamon but can also team up with any other application capable of
writing to a database.

Changes: This is the first beta version of the v2 branch. It has been
completely rewritten from scratch. It now offers a state-of-the art modern
user interface and is able to work with log files and not just databases.
For example, it can be used to view a remote server's log files over the
Web (proper authentication settings are highly recommended).

[040] - Polyspool 0.3
  by Mark Gannon (http://freshmeat.net/users/ctesias2/)
  Thu, Apr 24th 2008 22:42

About: Polyspool combines the Common Unix Printing System, Ghostscript,
Samba, and a live Linux CD to create an easy-to-use open source print
spooler capable of supporting Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux clients.
Polyspool provides a simple Web interface and requires no knowledge of
Linux commands to successfully deploy. Because Polyspool uses the standard
PostScript driver bundled with the Windows operating systems and
Ghostscript to render the print job, only one driver needs to be installed
for any supported printer.

Changes: This version introduces a Web based user interface that allows
the creation of printers, listing installed printers, and deleting
printers. In addition to the standard ISO, a new VMware "appliance" is
available for download that can be used either with VMware Workstation or
VMware Player.

[041] - rsyslog 3.16.0 (v3 Stable)
  by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
  Thu, Apr 24th 2008 06:00

System :: Logging

About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among others, it
offers support for on-demand disk buffering, reliable syslog over TCP,
writing to databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and many more), email
alerting, fully configurable output formats (including high-precision
timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog message,
on-the-wire message compression, and the ability to convert text files to
syslog. It is a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and able to work
with the same configuration file syntax.

Changes: This release brings a major new feature, RELP support, to the
stable branch. RELP enables lossless transmission of syslog messages, in
cases where even plain TCP syslog fails. Other than that, the release
contains a few bugfixes. Users of the v3-stable branch are advised to
update to this release.
