About: DUNE, the Distributed and Unified Numerics Environment, is a
modular toolbox for solving partial differential equations (PDEs) with
grid-based methods. DUNE is first of all a set of abstract interfaces
which embody concepts from scientific computing. Modern C++ programming
techniques enable very different implementations of the same concept using
a common interface at a very low overhead. Thus, DUNE ensures efficiency in
scientific computations and supports high-performance computing
applications.

[014] - dvipng 1.10
  by Jan-Åke Larsson (http://freshmeat.net/users/jalar/)
  Fri, May 9th 2008 14:07

Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: dvipng makes PNG or GIF graphics from DVI files obtained from TeX
and its relatives. Its benefits include speed; it uses very fast
bitmap-rendering code for DVI files. Furthermore, it does not read the
postamble, so it can be started before TeX finishes. It supports PK, VF,
PostScript Type1 (via FreeType or t1lib), and TrueType fonts (via
FreeType), color specials, can render CJK fonts, and more.

Changes: The main code addition is limited support for literal PostScript
specials using gs. For example, most of the PSTricks package can now be
rendered using dvipng. Unfortunately, dvipng can only handle drawing
PostScript code at the moment, not PostScript code intended to make dvips
+ gs scale, rotate, or move DVI glyphs (characters). This is because the
graphics state cannot be communicated back to dvipng from gs. As a result,
there are no guarantees. Also, the performance in terms of runtime could be
better.

[025] - jmemcached 0.4
  by Ryan Daum (http://freshmeat.net/users/rdaum/)
  Fri, May 9th 2008 13:59

About: jmemcached is a Java implementation of the daemon (server) side of
the memcached protocol. It implements a clone of the C version of the
memcached daemon, but in pure Java. It is protocol compatible with the C
version of memcached. Existing clients, including the one for Java, should
work without modification. Replacing the Java version with the C version
(and vice versa) is trivial. It can be embedded in an existing Java
project or used from its commandline interface (which mimics the C version
in arguments).

Changes: A major bugfix to the ADD protocol method. An upgrade to the most
recent stable Apache Mina version. Fixes to the internal cache API to
expose proper methods for public use. A 'stop' method to cleanly bring the
daemon down.

  by Oxygenic (http://freshmeat.net/users/oxygenic/)
  Fri, May 9th 2008 02:49

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers :: Sawfish
Home Automation

About: KaufKauf Slim Linux is a fully configured Linux-based operating
system that is able to run from flash memory. It doesn't require more than
500 MBytes of disk-space. It comes with full support for TouchKit touch
controllers and is made to run on weak systems (200 MHz CPU and 128 MBytes
RAM are enough). It is designed for embedded systems, doesn't need to be
shut down cleanly and comes with GNOME, CUPS, and several other features.

Changes: This version was fully updated and completely reworked. It now
contains Linux kernel 2.6, Xorg graphics, support for several Xorg-driven
touches, and the Xfce window manager. This release is intended to support
also new hardware platforms and chipsets like the Geode LX 800. It is
currently a testing version for development purposes and might not be
ready for production purposes.

[028] - levmar 2.3
  by Manolis Lourakis (http://freshmeat.net/users/lourakis/)
  Fri, May 9th 2008 14:05

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: levmar is a robust and efficient C/C++ implementation of the
Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) optimization algorithm. LM solves the non-linear
least squares problem, i.e. fitting a set of m observations with a model
that is non-linear in n unknown parameters (m>=n). levmar includes double
and single precision LM variants, both with analytic and finite difference
approximated Jacobians. It also has some support for constrained non-linear
least squares, allowing linear equation and box constraints to be imposed.
Availability of LAPACK/BLAS is strongly recommended for carrying out
linear algebra computations.

Changes: Improved support for problems with zero measurement vectors.
Memory retained among invocations of the linear solvers is released when
levmar terminates. The option of compiling only the single or only the
double precision functions of levmar has been added. A new error code 7
signaling infinite values in the function provided by the user has been
introduced. A couple of minor problems in the line search procedure of box
constrained optimization have been fixed. A detailed example on using
levmar for fitting a non-linear model to noisy data has been added.

[034] - OpenAFS 1.5.36 (Development)
  by Edgester (http://freshmeat.net/users/edgester/)
  Fri, May 9th 2008 16:13

Communications :: File Sharing
System :: Filesystems

About: AFS is a distributed filesystem which offers a client-server
architecture, transparent data migration abilities, scalability, a single
namespace, and integrated ancillary subsystems.

Changes: Rx optimizations now attempt to deal with high latency WANs. The
fileserver avoids a potential infinite loop when a client relinquishes an
address. The fileserver large setting now configures more threads. The
fileserver properly registers uuids of new clients. Client will not wait
infinitely for a server that is not providing data. Fileservers reserve
enough file descriptors such that each thread can cache one to avoid
spurious errors. On Windows, a reference count leak in the file server has
been fixed, udebug is prevented from crashing, and another VNOVNODE issue
has been fixed.

[039] - Seed7 2008-05-08
  by Thomas Mertes (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomas_mertes/)
  Fri, May 9th 2008 02:20

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements
and operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.

Changes: The descriptions of rem, mod, times, minIdx, maxIdx, rand,
insert, category, local_vars, local_consts, setCategory, setParams, 'in',
'not in', make_list, pos, &:=, @:=, and bufferChar in the manual were
improved. The functions fcast, fvarCast, varConv, varConv TRACE_REF, pos,
[minIdx .. maxIdx], minIdx, maxIdx, minIntIdx, maxIntIdx, card, xalloc,
ord, getwd, and getln in seed7_05.s7i were improved. The compiler support
for the actions arr_maxidx, arr_minidx, flt_icast, int_pow, rfl_ipos, and
sct_alloc was improved. The functions arr_maxidx, arr_minidx, bigUIConv,
rflIpos, and flt_icast were added.
