System :: Networking

About: Crossroads is an OSI layer 5-7 load balance and failover utility
for TCP-based services. It is a daemon program running in userspace and
features extensive configurability, polling of backends using "wakeup
calls", highly configurable dispatch modes of client requests to back
ends, detailed status reporting, "hooks" for special actions when backend
calls fail, support for "sticky" HTTP sessions, and more. It is
service-independent; it is usable for HTTP(S), SSH, SMTP, DNS, MySQL, etc.
Services are defined in a configuration file, and a Web front end can be
used for monitoring.

Changes: Crossroads was ported to Solaris 10. Minor logging-related
enhancements were made. In HTTP mode, "HTTP/1.x 3xx" responses (such as
"page not modified") are parsed correctly and subject to full header
inspection.

[013] - dvipng 1.11
  by Jan-Åke Larsson (http://freshmeat.net/users/jalar/)
  Mon, May 19th 2008 06:32

Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: dvipng makes PNG or GIF graphics from DVI files obtained from TeX
and its relatives. Its benefits include speed; it uses very fast
bitmap-rendering code for DVI files. Furthermore, it does not read the
postamble, so it can be started before TeX finishes. It supports PK, VF,
PostScript Type1 (via FreeType or t1lib), and TrueType fonts (via
FreeType), color specials, can render CJK fonts, and more.

Changes: This is a regression fix for version 1.10. In version 1.10, the
main code addition is limited support for literal PostScript specials
using gs. For example, most of the PSTricks package can now be rendered
using dvipng. Unfortunately, dvipng can only handle drawing PostScript
code at the moment, not PostScript code intended to make dvips and gs
scale, rotate, or move DVI glyphs (characters), so there are no
guarantees.

[022] - GNetWatch 3.0 (Documentation)

  Mon, May 19th 2008 13:22

System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: GNetWatch is an application that offers real-time graphical
monitoring and analysis of network performance through SNMP and ICMP. To
get an instant view of the network state, data are collected, stored, and
displayed every few seconds. Two traffic generation modules are available.
The former can flood UDP packets of any size (jumbo frames for instance)
and tagged with any DiffServ/ToS flag for QoS and class of services
testing. The latter can generate a huge quantity of parallel requests to
any HTTP(s) server for Web application load testing. To automatically
discover new hosts, GNetWatch can make use of Ethereal/WireShark and later
invoke NMap to get information about the remote systems. Note that IPv6 and
SNMPv3 are fully supported by GNetWatch.

Changes: The GNetWatch documentation has been fully rewritten to describe
every function available in the GNetWatch 3.0 release. It is now available
in two formats: PDF and single-page HTML. The installation and
configuration sections have been widely improved. The integration of an
external database is now described. Moreover, a tutorial section has been
added to explain how to achieve the main operations step-by-step. Finally,
information about GNetWatch internals is provided.

System :: Systems Administration

About: GOsa² provides a powerful framework for managing accounts and
systems in LDAP databases. Using GOsa² allows system administrators to
easily manage users and groups, fat and thin clients, applications, phones
and faxes, mail distribution lists, and many other parameters. In
conjunction with FAI (Fully Automatic Installation), GOsa² allows the
highly automated installation of preconfigured systems. GOsa² therefore
provides a single, LDAP-based point of administration for large and small
environments, thus making the administration of users and systems and all
related parameters manageable and easy.

Changes: This maintainance version fixes problems with possibly undefined
ridbase in domain objects, postremove/-create/-modify parameter expansion,
PPPD handling, department tagging, and DNS. Integrated Smarty has been
updated to 2.6.19. A new way to store passwords in gosa.conf has been

[025] - Himerge 0.21
  by Luis Araujo (http://freshmeat.net/users/LuisAraujo/)
  Mon, May 19th 2008 07:34

System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions

About: Himerge is a GUI for emerge (Gentoo's Portage system) written in
Haskell using gtk2hs. The main idea is to simplify browsing the entire
portage tree, and allow running the most basic and common options from the
emerge command. It also offers several handy tools, like global and local
use flags browsers, inspired by UFED (the Gentoo Linux USE flags editor).
It also uses eix (a small utility for searching ebuilds with indexing for
fast results) as a back-end command to show package information in
HTML/CSS format, so you can access a package's Web site for a quick
glance.

Changes: Now the package queue pop-up menu can also be launched with the
shortcut-key sequence "Ctrl+RightArrow". Himerge now will check for all
the required binaries and files needed to run at the start. The package

About: MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original
tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your
console (with ncurses). Merging of 2 or more log files is possible. It can
also use colors while displaying the log files (through regular
expressions) for faster recognition of what is important. It can also
filter lines (again with regular expressions). It has interactive menus
for editing given regular expressions and deleting and adding windows. One
can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software.
When viewing the output of external software, MultiTail can mimic the
functionality of tools like 'watch'.

Changes: Problems were fixed with editrules and Solaris makefiles. The
"write script" functionality was fixed. The suspend (^z) functionality was
re-enabled. An assertion-error that happened when using the "-ts" switch
was fixed. The "--follow-all" switch was added. The configuration file now
also accepts "y" instead of "yes".

[038] - open-cgf 0.10
  by Bruce (http://freshmeat.net/users/BruceFitzsimons/)
  Mon, May 19th 2008 06:11

Communications :: Telephony

About: open-cgf provides a 3GPP-compliant charging gateway function (CGF)
as a sink for SGSN, GGSN, and other streamed CDRs on the 3GPP Ga/Gz
interface using GTP' (GTP prime). Refer to 3GPP 32.295. These are common
packet-switched data elements of GSM/UMTS mobile telephone networks. It
aims to supply a telco-grade solution to this common, albeit very
specialized, need. It does not decode the ASN.1 CDRs, but simply and
reliably writes them to disk for later processing.

Changes: The CDR logging was rewritten to reflect the standards and other
implementations. This may have created some new bugs. Some "reliability"
was added to the sending of CGF-initiated messages, although there are no
consequences to non-response yet. Backoff is exponential (a la TCP).
