  Mon, Jun 9th 2008 14:26

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries

About: C++ ResourcePool is a library which can be used to pool resources
of every kind. It can also be used as an abstraction layer by providing a
unique API for different resources of similar resource types; the most
prominent examples are SQL databases. It includes a convenient way to
access MySQL and Oracle databases in the same way, so that changing from
MySQL to Oracle or vice-versa does not need big code changes.

Changes: A bug in the select example has been fixed. Some minor
performance improvements have been incorporated, and the getSessionID()
method has been added to all SQL Resources. The getSessionID() method
returns a database-dependent session identifier and is intended for logging
purposes only.

Adaptive Technologies
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Image Recognition

About: CellWriter is a grid-entry natural handwriting input panel. As you
write characters into the cells, your writing is instantly recognized at
the character level. When you press 'Enter' on the panel, the input you
entered is sent to the currently focused application as if typed on the
keyboard. Writer-dependent, CellWriter learns your handwriting for reliable
recognition. Correcting preprocessor algorithms account for digitizer
noise, differing stroke order, direction, and number of strokes. Unicode
support enables you to write in any language.

  by moz (http://freshmeat.net/users/mozillagodzilla/)
  Mon, Jun 9th 2008 17:45

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: CrissCross is a small cross-platform C++ library for console and
file I/O, CPU identification (CPUID), hashing (MD2, MD4, MD5, SHA-1,
SHA-256, SHA-512, Tiger), sockets (TCP and UDP only currently), and data
structures (LList, DArray, RedBlackTree, AVLTree, SplayTree, etc). It is
designed to run on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Mac OS X, and
even the Nintendo DS. Other platforms may become supported upon request.
The main idea is to provide the ability to write a program using identical
calls on the major platforms without needing to rewrite code.

Changes: TCPSockets have been generally overhauled after lots of practical
use of them in ARC++. GenerateBuildNumber.exe is now statically linked to
eliminate dependencies. Stopwatch now calls Start() on initialization. The
largely unimplemented "ban" system in sockets has been removed. The
internal strdup macro has been renamed to cc_strdup to avoid conflicts. A
critical bug in RedBlackTree where a null pointer was dereferenced has been
fixed. A bug in AVLTree where the size may have been incorrectly reported
has been fixed. A few compiler warnings have been fixed. ThreadSleep on Mac
OS X has been fixed.

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for instant scalable full-text
search on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It
features a built-in database crawler following user-defined SQL,
incremental indexing, user-controllable result ranking, the ability to
return results with highlights (like Google), and categorized result counts
(like Amazon). It can easily integrate with other languages with
XML/JSON/HTML. There is a UI for all operations, so no Java coding is
necessary. Deleted or updated records in database can be synchronized also.

Changes: Configurable sorting was added for narrowBy results. A freemarker
template servlet was added for rendering search results. Field-specific
highlighting via wizard generated code was added. Support for efficiently
searching multiple same-structured datasources was added. An exception is
avoided when the option "Empty Query Match All" is unchecked. The
templateName parameter was enhanced by adding options for a different index
from the current index, a different file from default main.vm.

Text Editors

About: Edt is a simple text editor that emulates VAX VNS Edt. It uses the
numeric keypad for common editing functions. It is easy to learn,
efficient, and enables rapid editing. The editor has multiple buffers,
handles large files, and is light-weight.

Changes: This release supports editing gzip files directly. It recognizes
the file suffix, automatically decompresses for editing, and re-zips on
exit. This transparent process encourages keeping more files compressed on
disk. The keypad setup file now supports an improved XML format. amd
configures your keypad for EDT edit functions. The new XML format is easier
to understand, customize, and maintain. 3 example keypad layout files are

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Ruby Modules
System :: Archiving

About: Einarc is a universal storage RAID command line interface and an
API that provides management for various hardware/software RAID devices,
uniting them all in a single paradigm. Einarc works as a translator that
makes it possible for a user to control all these devices using simple
terms like "physical disc", "logical disc", "adapter", etc., while
transparently converting these requests to proprietary RAID paradigms.

Changes: Support for newer Adaptec adapters (ASR 3405, 3805, and 5xxx)
using arcconf was added. The new objects "bbu" and "firmware" in the Einarc
object space have been introduced: it's possible to get information about
BBU and flash/extract firmware. The "adapter info" report follows strict
key names, unified for all adapters. Existing modules have updated their
CLI versions. Multiple bugs affecting stability and metadata were fixed in
all modules.

About: extract_url.pl is a Perl script that extracts URLs from either
correctly-encoded MIME email messages or from plain text. It can be used
either as a pre-parser for a URL selector (such as urlview), or as a
standalone URL selector. It is very configurable, can handle URLs that have
been broken over several lines in format=flowed delsp=yes email messages,
and eliminates duplicate URLs. It was designed primarily for use with Mutt,
but can be used by for any similar purpose. The idea is that if you want to
access a URL in an email, you pipe the email to a URL extractor (like this
one), which then lets you select a URL to view in some third program (such
as Firefox).

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: gtkaml is an XML syntax and an XML parser that extends the
Vala.Parser and transforms all your XML tags into a valid Gtk+ UI class. It
features a compact XML syntax for describing the way Gtk widgets are laid
out in a (new) custom widget you're creating. Code "islands" (written in
Vala) are used for widget signal handling and other
methods/signals/properties that you're introducing. It doesn't depend on an
external library at run-time, and it is much more readable than the usual
UI boilerplate.

About: gumnut is a program to aid a group of people to perform cooperative
decentralized decision making. The text or GUI client can create, moderate,
and display proposals over a decentralized communication network (currently
gnutella). Proposals are text files with a simple naming convention that
uses the filename to describe field attributes (such as topic and
geographical location). Popular proposals are found by searching on one or
more of these fields and then calculating the support for each proposal
based on the number of occurrences on the network.

[034] - Imagero 2.0 RC10
  by ak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imagero/)
  Mon, Jun 9th 2008 21:23

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Imagero is a Java image I/O library. Supported file types include
BMP, GIF, TIFF, PNG, JNG, MNG, JPEG (including CMYK and 12-bit grey), PSD,
PBM, PGM, PPM, TGA, EPS, EPSI, and EPSF, MRW, CRW, NEF, DCR, and DNG. It
can read thumbnails and can read and edit metadata (IPTC, EXIF, XMP, Wang
Annotations, Image Resource Blocks, Image File Directrories, JPEG Markers).
An image can be read into an array, Image, BufferedImage, or tiled
RenderedImage. Accurate color conversion is done with ICC profiles. TIFF
tools allow you to split and merge TIFF images.

Changes: A PNG encoder has been added. There are a few utility classes to
simplify image handling. IOParameterBlock is used to set input and output
options. ImageProcOptions is used to collect image processing options. The
class Imagero contains methods to read images, get thumbnails, save an
image as JPEG, etc. The new method close() in the ImageReader interface
should be used instead of ImageReader#getInput().close(). The classes
FileInfo, ImageInfo, ColorInfo, and LayerInfo (which are self-explanatory)
have been added. There is a partial implementation of Imagero for
ActionScript.

[036] - Lucene Image REtrieval 0.6
  by Mathias (http://freshmeat.net/users/motte/)
  Mon, Jun 9th 2008 17:56

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering :: Image Recognition
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: The LIRE (Lucene Image REtrieval) library provides a simple way to
create a Lucene index of image features for content-based image retrieval
(CBIR), which allows searching for similar images. The used features are
taken from the MPEG-7 standard: ScalableColor, ColorLayout, and
EdgeHistogram. Furthermore, methods for searching the index are provided.

Changes: This release contains three additional features: Tamura, CEDD,
and a color histogram implementation. CEDD and Tamura provide additional
improvements. A FastMap implementation is included for optimization of the
indexing process in a later release. Some bugs were fixed in the MPEG-7
EdgeHistogram descriptor provided in the cbir-library jar file and in
color-only search. Note that due to the increased number of features, the
extensive document builder needs significantly more time for extraction
than in the last release.

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: The NET-SNMP (formerly UCD-SNMP) package contains various tools
relating to the Simple Network Management Protocol including an extensible

  Mon, Jun 9th 2008 17:57

Database
Utilities

About: OraRep is a PL/SQL snippet (embedded in a shell script) which
creates a well-formatted HTML report on a given database instance,
providing you with an overview on your instance(s), some hints for
performance tuning, and more. It has been tested with Oracle 8.1.7, 9.0.1,
and 9.2. The script easily fits into a cron task to be run on a regular
basis. Sample output (HTML) is included. OSPRep does the same job for
Oracle StatsPack Reports based on SnapShot Levels up to 7, and provides
additional "plugins" for more detailed reporting on special issues. It also
optionally creates a separate page with charts to visualize the results and
more.

Changes: OSPRep had been totally broken for Oracle 8i, which is hopefully
fixed now. This release tries to work around issues in reports with Oracle
10g+ caused by the changed behavior in dbms_output.put_line. A small change
makes this release work with 11g as well.

[045] - PHP MIME Mail decoder class 2008.06.07
  by Manuel Lemos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlemos/)
  Mon, Jun 9th 2008 14:20

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: PHP MIME Mail decoder class is a PHP class to parse and decode MIME
email messages. It supports decoding single RFC 2822 MIME messages or
archives that aggregate multiple messages in the mbox format. It can decode
messages read from files or data strings. The bodies of multipart messages
can be decoded into distinct sub-messages. Optionally, the message body
data can be saved to separate files, so the class can handle messages
larger than the available memory. The parser can tolerate some syntax
errors in malformed messages that are not compliant with RFC 2822.

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: Word War vi is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up '80s style arcade
game. You pilot your "vi"per craft through core memory, rescuing lost .swp
files, avoiding OS defenses, and wiping out those memory hogging emacs
processes. When all the lost .swp files are rescued, head for the socket
which will take you to the next node in the cluster.

Changes: A "--retrogreen" option has been added. A memory leak has been
fixed. A new type of enemy (jets) has been added. "randomize" and
"randomseed" options have been added. Changes have been made to the levels
system to allow levels to be more distinct from one another. Now humanoids
and the player's ship blink on the radar screen.
