by Jeff Perkins (http://freshmeat.net/users/jhpnez/)
Fri, Jun 13th 2008 17:05
Documentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: Daikon is an implementation of dynamic detection of likely
invariants. An invariant is a property (such as "x=2*y+5" or
"this.next.prev = this" or "myarray is sorted by <") that holds at a
certain point or points in a program. Invariants are often seen in assert
statements, documentation, and formal specifications. Invariants can be
useful in program understanding and a host of other applications. Daikon
runs a program, observes the values that the program computes, and then
reports properties that were true over the observed executions. It can
detect properties in Java, C, C++, Perl, and IOA programs, in spreadsheet
files, and in other data sources.
Changes: A new format for declaration records in Daikon trace data was
introduced, and the AnnotateNullable tool was released. A number of bugs
were fixed.

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Security :: Cryptography
About: edtFTPj/PRO is a Java library that performs secure file transfers.
It supports FTPS (FTP over SSL), both explicit and implicit modes, and SFTP
(FTP via SSH). It also supports asynchronous transfers and FTP connection
pools. All major FTP operations are supported, including both active and
passive modes. It provides a progress monitor interface, allowing
applications to receive progress updates for their file transfers. The
library is built on the open source edtFTPj and shares its API.
Changes: A problem regarding FileNotFoundStrings, DirectoryEmptyStrings,
and TransferCompleteStrings was fixed. There is now an FTP command shell
that allows real-time development of FTP scripts for FTPS, SFTP, and FTP.
This can be used to connect to and control any FTP server on the
command-line. Methods were added to save the known_hosts data to a file.
Support was added for OpenSSH 4.0 hashed hostnames in the known_hosts file.

by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
Fri, Jun 13th 2008 13:57
Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: fwknop implements an authorization scheme called Single Packet
Authorization that requires only a single encrypted packet to communicate
various pieces of information, including desired access through an iptables
or ipfw firewall policy and/or specific commands to execute on the target
system. The main application of this program is to protect services such as
SSH with an additional layer of security in order to make the exploitation
of vulnerabilities much more difficult. The authorization server works by
passively monitoring authorization packets via libpcap. Also supported is a
robust port knocking implementation based around iptables log messages.
Changes: This release adds the LOCALE variable to fwknop.conf and sets the
"C" locale by default so that gpg process output is always correctly
interpreted, removes the legacy knopmd.conf file since knopmd (which is
only used in the legacy port knocking mode) uses the fwknop.conf file
instead, and updates Crypt::CBC to 2.29, Crypt::Rijndael to 1.06,
GnuPG::Interface to 0.36, and Net::RawIP to 0.23.

About: gpgdir is a Perl script that uses the CPAN GnuPG module to encrypt
and decrypt directories using a GPG key specified in ~/.gpgdirrc. It
supports recursively descending through a directory in order to make sure
it encrypts or decrypts every file in a directory and all of its
subdirectories. All file mtime and atime values are preserved across
encryption and decryption operations. In addition, gpgdir is careful not to
encrypt hidden files and directories.
Changes: This release always sets the LC_ALL environment variable to the
"C" locale. This can be set to other locales with the new argument
--locale, or the default locale can be used by using the --no-locale
argument. This release updates Class::MethodMaker to 2.11 from CPAN. This
helps with systems running perl-5.10.0 and greater (such as Fedora 9).

About: Granite Data Services (GDS) is an alternative to Adobe LiveCycle
(Flex 2) Data Services for J2EE application servers. It is not, however, a
drop-in replacement: you won't be able to simply deploy a Flex 2 Data
Services application into a Granite Data Services server without
modifications. The main goal of this project is to provide a framework for
Flex 2/EJB3/Spring/Seam/Guice/Pojo application development with full
AMF3/RemoteObject benefits. It has a Data Push feature implemented as AMF3
requests sent over HTTP (Comet).
Changes: This release includes several improvements and bugfixes (gas3,
hibernate support, gravity, and spring security), and one new feature (a
servlet-based MXML/AS3 compiler).

About: Low-Level Virtual Machine (LLVM) is a compiler infrastructure
designed for compile-time, link-time, run-time, and "idle-time"
optimization of programs from arbitrary programming languages. It currently
supports compilation of C, Objective-C, and C++ programs, using front-ends
derived from GCC 4.0, GCC 4.2, and a custom new front-end, "clang". It
supports x86, x86_64, ia64, PowerPC, and SPARC, with support for Alpha and
ARM under development.
Changes: This release includes many bugfixes, vastly improved support for
the X86-64 ABI, support for SSE 4.1 on X86 chips, support for functions
that return multiple results in memory, a new 'llvmc' tool, support for
atomic operations, improved gfortran support, and many new and improved

by Norbert Sendetzky (http://freshmeat.net/users/nsendetzky/)
Fri, Jun 13th 2008 09:34
Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries
About: The OpenDBX libraries provide a unified and consistent API for
software developers to different database management systems. The C and C++
libraries aim to implement access to the native database interfaces
efficiently via a thin abstraction layer. They consist of a basic set of
functions that are part of all vendor database libraries and can be
extended by additional function blocks. Currently, Firebird/Interbase, MS
SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQLite 2 and 3, and Sybase ASE are
supported.
Changes: The OpenDBX library now compiles on Windows NT based systems
using either the Cygwin or MinGW environment. Also, the library
specification was improved and doesn't allow the backends to return errors
any more if odbx_result() or odbx_row_fetch() is called once more after
they already returned DONE. With adding the Conn::finish(),
Result::finish(), and Lob::close() methods, the C++ API is now considered
complete. Simplifying the API was continued by making more parameters
optional. The C++ API now contains inline documentation in Javadoc format.

[053] - PHP MIME Mail decoder class 2008.06.10
by Manuel Lemos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlemos/)
Fri, Jun 13th 2008 09:16
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: PHP MIME Mail decoder class is a PHP class to parse and decode MIME
email messages. It supports decoding single RFC 2822 MIME messages or
archives that aggregate multiple messages in the mbox format. It can decode
messages read from files or data strings. The bodies of multipart messages
can be decoded into distinct sub-messages. Optionally, the message body
data can be saved to separate files, so the class can handle messages
larger than the available memory. The parser can tolerate some syntax
errors in malformed messages that are not compliant with RFC 2822.
Changes: A bug was fixed to support multipart messages with white space at
the end of message part boundary lines.

by Glenn Randers-Pehrson (http://freshmeat.net/users/glennrp/)
Fri, Jun 13th 2008 09:28
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
System :: Archiving :: Compression
About: pngcrush is an excellent batch-mode compression utility for PNG
images. Depending on the application that created the original PNGs, it can
improve the file size anywhere from a few percent to 40% or more
(completely losslessly). The utility also allows specified PNG chunks (e.g.
text comments) to be inserted or deleted, and it can fix incorrect gamma
info written by Photoshop 5.0 as well as the erroneous iCCP chunk written
by Photoshop 5.5.
Changes: This release will reject invalid color_type or bit_depth found on
the commandline. Some #defines were moved from pngcrush.h to pngcrush.c so
they will work with the "nolib" distributions.

[055] - Port Scan Attack Detector 2.1.3
by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
Fri, Jun 13th 2008 14:01
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: The Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a collection of three
system daemons that are designed to work with the Linux iptables
firewalling code to detect port scans and other suspect traffic. It
features a set of highly configurable danger thresholds (with sensible
defaults), verbose alert messages, email alerting, DShield reporting, and
automatic blocking of offending IP addresses. Psad incorporates many of the
packet signatures included in Snort to detect various kinds of suspicious
scans, and implements the same passive OS fingerprinting algorithm used by
p0f.
Changes: This release enables IPT_SYSLOG_FILE by default. This is a
relatively important change, since it changes the default method of
acquiring iptables log data from reading it from a named pipe from syslog
to just parsing the /var/log/messages file. The whois client has been
updated to version 4.7.26, Bit::Vector to 6.4, and Date::Calc to 5.4.

kernel methods and especially on Support Vector Machines (SVM). It provides
a generic SVM object interfacing to several different SVM implementations,
all making use of the same underlying, efficient kernel implementations.
Apart from SVMs and regression, SHOGUN also features a number of linear
methods like Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Linear Programming Machine
(LPM), (Kernel) Perceptrons, and algorithms to train hidden Markov models.
SHOGUN can be used from within C++, Matlab, R, Octave, and Python.
Changes: Shogun now fails nicely in "out of memory" situations. The
progress output has been disabled by default. All interfaces (including R)
are now installed via "configure; make; make install". The directory
structure has been revised, examples have been ported to the R and
commandline interface, and the structure learning branch has been merged.
Reference documentation for the static interfaces is now dynamically
generated. A few crashers, memory leaks, and compilation problems have been
fixed.

[063] - The Cell Messaging Layer 2.1
by Scott Pakin (http://freshmeat.net/users/pakin/)
Fri, Jun 13th 2008 20:33
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: The Cell Messaging Layer is a communication library for clusters of
Cell Broadband Engine processors. It implements a subset of the popular MPI
message-passing API on the Cell's SPE processors, with one MPI rank per SPE
across any number of Cells and the ability for any SPE to communicate
directly with any other SPE, even across a network. The Cell Messaging
Layer thereby makes programming clusters of Cell processors similar to
programming clusters of conventional CPUs.
Changes: MPI tags are now supported. "make help-config" lists all
CML-specific configuration options. Support for 32-bit PPE builds has been
dropped.
